General discussion

Suggested Feature[edit]

Just started using NPWatcher and it's great! Much better than doing it by hand!

A couple things would help me:

1. I'd like to be able to restrict results by size. I'm mostly looking for copyvios, and when large pages appear out of nowhere, they are often copy-and-pastes from other websites. Others are reposts of deleted articles that should not be reposted. If I could eliminate any results under 1K or 2K, that would be great. Also, searching for size "0" would yield blank(ed) pages.

2. I'd love to be able to store my username and password. My pw is unwieldy to type.

Thanks for a great utility!

--Butseriouslyfolks 06:52, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In response to the last one, it would be a security issue to store your WP pwd in clear text on the machine. 11:44, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes - I may be able to do the password saving thing as a user choice - I'll see about the protocol for this. As far as I'm concerned, if you use a program to store your password on hard-drive in plain text, then it would be your own fault if it got stolen :-). For point 1 - I'll have to check :) Martinp23 12:10, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

copyvios[edit]

The copyvio speedy, db-copyvio, takes the parameter of url=http://www.blah.com/copiedtext.htm after the | not just http://. It always catches me out when I flag it manually and NPW seems to miss the need for the extra 'url=' too. Thanks again --Steve (Slf67) talk 03:20, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have been tagging copyvios manually using the temp without the url=, and it works for simple urls. Certain complex urls (such as those containing a question mark) glitch out, like they're not even there. It would help if NPW included the url=. It would also help me if NPW warned the first contributor on copyvios. Thanks as always. --Butseriouslyfolks 04:49, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion[edit]

First of all Martin n co I like the tool. For your next version though could you think of adding the escalating warning system to the buttons some how. It's becoming clear once someone has created an attack or nonsense page they are highly likely to do another one, so to continually add {{nn-warn}} to their page is a bit pointless. Might I suggest that the user is given the opportunity once the initial warnings have been done, to increment the warning to {{uw-creation2}}, {{uw-creation3}} or {{uw-creation4}}

Anyway thanks again for the tool Khukri 10:47, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try :) Martinp23 12:23, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just another little one for the Delete (nonesense and warn) et al, could you make sure it adds the tag first and then gives the warning. Just had a case of someone had beaten me to tagging the page, and had warned the user. But because it came up the page has changed after it had already warned the user I had to remove the extra warning. Ta muchly Khukri 11:03, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Probably this won't be possible. Orginally the program worked as you descibe above, but this caused problems when an admin wanted to delete a page first, and then warn the user (as with the history gone, it was impossible to find the creator). A can work around this in future, but it could be a little while until I have the time to make the sort of changes required. Thanks, Martinp23 12:23, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Populating the list[edit]

Like the tool and its really helped me get re-engaged with regular new page patrol. I'm just curious how new the pages are when the list is populated. I'd personally prefer to be reviewing pages that were say at least 20 - 30 minutes old rather than those that have been created only a minute or two earlier. This is because sticking a speedy tag on an article that is only 30 second old can be seen as a little bity by the more sensitive amongst us. How about an option to allow users to select whether to populate the list from the first, second or third page of new pages depending on their user display settings. I have mine set on 50 per page so I could then ask for pages 50-70 in the feed.... Just an idea. I hope it makes some sense. --Spartaz Humbug! 18:35, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It certainly make sense, and is quite doable (and avoids WP:BITE) - I'll have a look at doing it in a future release. Martinp23 18:39, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. I'd like that a lot. :D --Spartaz Humbug! 21:12, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Update check[edit]

I think it wouldd be better to check for the updates before having to login, because I have just spent a while trying to log in (typing my password in wrong etc...) for it to just say "You need to download a new version", and quit. If it said get an update before logging in, it would be much appreciated. Stwalkerster 19:39, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is fixed as of the current release. Reedy 20:25, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

stub teamplet into table[edit]

NPWatcher just put a stub label into a table.[1] Just a small glitch though. Tikiwont 12:47, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Two Feature Requests[edit]

From our IRC discussion.

  1. The ability to not warn the user on CSD I3 deletions, as if you're deleting an image, warning them to fix their licensing info doesn't do much good.
  2. When deleting images with CSD I8, the ability to update image links (via a prompt for the new image URL, I would assume) would be nice, as many times there are several links to update, and manually doing that takes a lot of work

Just as a reminder, so you don't forget :-P. Also, if you need any help with it, just let me know. ^demon[omg plz] 21:20, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't know, as I am not an admin, but is it warning the user or just notifing them? If it is the former, it should be changed to the latter, but otherwise it should be left as it is. It is generaly a good practice to notify users if you delete their image, article, etc. ffm talk 01:19, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that some features of the program do not notify users that their media has been deleted, it instead gives them the same message that someone tagging their media would give them, which is misleading. For instance, until I asked Martinp23 to change it, upon both tagging and deleting an article about a non notable person, group or website, Template:Nn-warn was sent to the author of the article. It is better for the deleter to send something such as Template:Nn-warn-deletion, which is actually written to be sent after having deleted the content. J Milburn 08:35, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes - if the wrong template is being used in places, it will certainly help to have another suggested to replace its use :) Martinp23 19:16, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request concerning NewPage Watcher[edit]

I use NewPage watcher and I thought to myself that a great improvement for the program could be the ability to type in the articles that you want to access and load them that way as well, so that it's not only a newpage watcher, it can also be used to tag articles that aren't quite new but nonetheless need tags. I have noticed that NPW is a great tool for tagging articles for various reasons new or not new. I would also like to suggest a few new buttons for new tags be added as well. Perhaps a "POV" tag. I wanted some input on this. I also noticed that when I load NPW, prior to looging in I can see "Images" and "Prod" tabs. What are these for and why do they disappear after I log in? Could NPW be used also for tagging new images? Wikidudeman (talk) 17:31, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The idea has already crossed my mind, but I though that the devs would blast me :) Now let's hope they don't. Snowolf How can I help? 22:08, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good ideas. Some things there for next release. Martinp23 00:19, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ignore page creations by certain users?[edit]

Would it be possible to add a tool similar to 'ignore pages created by bots', except that it would ignore pages created by a certain user? Only, today, new page patrol is difficult due to the large number of pages being created by Blofeld of SPECTRE. These are perfectly valid pages, and they don't need any tagging or anything, so it would be best, from my point of view, to completely ignore them for a session of new page patrol. See what I mean? Would it be possible to work such a feature in? J Milburn (talk) 19:06, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know you can have it automatically ignore pages created by admins, so I imagine it could be worked in.   jj137 (talk) 21:15, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not Working[edit]

Each time I try to download and run NPWatcher the same error message comes up:

"The application failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling this application may..."

I don't understand - the old version works fine, but not the new one. Any suggestions? Thanks. - Milk's Favorite Cookie 23:49, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Small bug[edit]

Suggestions for future versions[edit]

Hello everyone. I've recently been granted permission to use NPWatcher, and after giving it a quick go, here are my first impressions and suggestions for future versions:

  1. There is currently no option to remain logged into the system. There should at least be an option letting people stay logged in for 30 days, in my opinion. This is espcially true, I feel, as people are not likely to download NPW on a work / school / library / etc. computer (as it means downloading and installing a new program, which may not be allowed), and will therefore only use it at home, thereby decreasing the chance of someone else being able to use their account on NPW. If this is still a concern, a new rule could be added that NPW should not be used on public computers.
  2. The window showing newly-created articles needs a horizontal scroll bar for articles with long titles.
  3. There should be an option to view new articles with a certain time offset (e.g. to only view articles at least 1 hour old, or at least 24 hours old, or similar) to avoid CSD-tagging articles that have very recently been created and are still being constructed.
  4. The date and time at which an article was created should be more obvious; one needs to consult the article history at present.
  5. It would be good if NPW displayed the URL to which something links on hovering over it with your mouse cursor (just like most Internet browsers do by default), in case you notice something in NPW which you want to come back to in IE or FF.

That's all so far! It Is Me Here (talk) 16:04, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

************** JIT Debugging **************

To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this application or computer (machine.config) must have the jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section. The application must also be compiled with debugging enabled.

For example:

<configuration>

   <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />

</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer rather than be handled by this dialog box.

  • I am using Windows Vista Home Premium with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari and Chrome
  • I am not using a proxy server
  • I have tried using "Run as administrator"
  • I have tried downloading other versions of the software
  • I have .NET Framework 2.0 installed
  • I have received approval to use NPWatcher by an administrator

I can not think of anything else to do and I have not experienced similar problems with any other programs. GT5162 (talk) 19:22, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I get the same, on 2 computers... ArakunemTalk 16:03, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, so did AWB and huggle. Know how to fix it, so will do it tonight and put a release out... Reedy 16:20, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cannot view full page[edit]

Hi guys. I have a problem with NPWatcher. When I open the deletion tab I can only see speedy delete, article criteria, and redirect sections. I can't see the stuff to it's right. I've tried to expand the window, maximise/minimise, nothing seems to work. Can someone help, please? Antivenin 14:27, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Does not login -- also, keeps pulling up a debugger, 10 or 20 times per page[edit]

Even though it asks me for my password, it does not log me in -- when I try to mark a page as patrolled, I get the this action restricted to autoconfirmed users page. When I try to log in in the web browser screen the program spawns, I get a ton of requests to use the MS debugger. RayTalk 02:23, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's related to my use of Twinkle and Friendly. When I get rid of those, the problems disappear. RayTalk 02:58, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You are correct, it will most likely be your monobook.js. See Wikipedia_talk:AutoWikiBrowser#Frequently_asked_questions for a workaround. Last 2 entries Reedy 08:28, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Constant freezes[edit]

The program constantly freezes on me, to the point I can barely use it. I click on a button to mark for speedy deletion, and it freezes. Now I just merely log in and it stops responding. I'm using NPW 1.2.3.0 on Windows XP SP3. --Whip it! Now whip it good! 20:46, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also this: Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close imediately. The remote name could not be resolved: 'en.wikipedia.org'. --Whip it! Now whip it good! 03:55, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Some suggestions for minor improvements[edit]

<disclaimer>I am an idiot, sorry. English is not my native language. I am a VB6 noob. Feel free to ignore me or ask questions if I failed to explain what I want</disclaimer>

Hi there! I love NPW :-) Thanks guys!

I have some suggestions that are easy to implement and might improve NPW's interface.

  • The "Cancel" button in the "Login" screen (which shows up when you start NPW) should be named "Cancel and quit", and the Esc(ape) key should be the hotkey to quit (that way if you accidentally start NPWatcher you can close it again).
  • NPW shouldn't try connecting when the password field is left empty in the "Login" screen (If my assumption that all accounts have a password is correct). If you click the "Login" button when the password field is empty it shouldn't do anything except giving focus to the "Password:" textbox. What is the minimum amount of characters in a password? Since when?
  • If NPW stored a username from last time in the XML it should give the passwordfield (textbox) in the "Login" screen focus, not the "Username" textbox (so that you can start typing the password without pressing TAB first).
  • I think the button to cancel should be on the left side of the "Login" screen, and the "Login" button on the right side (but that is a matter of taste).
  • I think it is possible to add 3 options (for example: 125, 150 & 350) to the combobox "Limit:", it will cover the "populate list" button when expanded but not the browser.
  • If I click the "Populate list" button I get a popup window called "ListSource". Once I open this window there is no way to close it except to click the "Load" button. I would like a cancel button and/or a close button in the top-right corner of the popup window (with the Esc(ape) key as a hotkey to close it).
  • When I am finished logging in I get a screen called "Logged in". I don't think this messagebox is really necessary. If I close this screen the first thing to get the focus on NPW is the combobox "Limit:", this should be the button "Populate list" so that I can press Enter or the Spacebar immediately to populate the list (instead of having to press the Tab key twice first, or click).
  • In the "Help - About" screen there should be a (web)link to the manual; or a new menuitem should be added to the "Help"-menu called "Manual" that is a (web)link to the manual.
  • When I click the "populate list" button I get a screen called "ListSource". It says: "Choose from below where you would like to get the list of pages from. Custom category can be used for image deletion and prod sorting." I think the extra space in between these sentences is a typo.
  • In the screen called "ListSource" the setting "Hide admin creations" should get a checkbox, directly below "Hide patrolled pages" and "Hide pages created by bots". The "Settings" menu should be in the same order: "Hide patrolled pages"", "Hide pages created by bots", "Hide admin creations", "Set list autorefresh interval".

NPW is written in C# ;P Reedy 23:27, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
???
I know it's written in C#... That doesn't matter because the suggestions above still apply, even if it was written in brainfuck. :P Kwiki (talk) 07:27, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It was more the mention of VB6 ;). I've already made a start in sorting them. Reedy 07:56, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks a lot. I'll probably write some more suggestions later. Kwiki (talk) 07:57, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The icon used for the NPWatcher executable is not transparant.
  • I found these two images. NPWatcher.exe contains one 32x32 pixel icon (16.8mil colors) but it is possible to include multipule images. Windows sometimes uses small icons (16x16). I recommend making a 16x16 pixel icon without the text "NPW" on it. If you make a version with just the shield make it as big as possible and upload it on Commons plz. You also might want to make some larger icons like 48x48. I would also like a 64x64 pixelversion uploaded to Commons so that it can be used in Userboxes. It might be fun to have some sort of banner and/or template to promote NPW.
Blah, graphics. Reedy 15:51, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Why is the setting "hideAdmins" false by default? I would assume that admins generally don't create pages that need a lot of attention from the newpage patrollers.
This seems to be set to true for me.. Not sure if i've some previous settings or what... Reedy 15:49, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • If you click "Populate list" and the "ListSource" screen appears the "Load" button should get focus.

I'll just strike through them above when i know i've done them. Reedy 15:49, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A future hope[edit]

Any chance for a Mac-compatible version? Tim Ross (talk) 20:53, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Its just waiting on full implementation of everything NPW needs in mono. Reedy 23:25, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'd also like to see a mac version. I am an avid New page patroller and this would be a big help.

Download help[edit]

I've downloaded and unzipped the application, but when i try to start it up, it looks like its working, but then a box pops up telling me to download the latest version, and then closes the application entirely. How do I get it working? Cheers, Mazeau (talk) 01:41, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bug or NOT?[edit]

This is a problem I have been facing with both NPW as well as AWB. I don't know whether this is a bug or not. I am currently using the latest version of NPW, and AWB. I logged into WP using MSIE7. Once donem I logged in using NWP. It logs me in and when I try to use the program, it gives me an error, and says NOT logged in. AWB does the EXACT same thing. I have deleted browsing history, temp files, and cookies as well, but nothing seems to work. What should I do? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 06:36, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Login error[edit]

I was granted permission to use NPW yesterday. I downloaded version 1230. I have Windows Vista. I opened NPW and it asked me to login. I entered my details and a box popped up saying "Logged in." I was able to populate the list and was able to see pages in the window. I was able to navigate and edit manually via the NPW interface. The problem comes when I try to use an auto-tagging button. It pauses for a few seconds and then says "Login error - unable to login. Please report this error!" (Which I did). I'm logged in to NPW (it says so) and I'm logged in to Wikipedia too... so I don't see what else I need to do. Any suggestions? ~~ Dr Dec (Talk) ~~ 16:33, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As posted above I'm also having this problem. Have you tried clearing IE coockies and cache? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 11:13, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm using Google Chrome, but I'll try it anyway... ~~ Dr Dec (Talk) ~~ 21:38, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've cleared the cookies and cache of all of my web browsers: IE, FF and GC. I've even used my security software to clean up my hard drive and delete all cookies and clear all temporary internet files. I've tried using Beta and tried not using Beta. The same thing happens all the time: it says "Login error - unable to login. Please report this error!" It doesn't make any changes to the page, except changing it to having been patrolled! Grrr! ~~ Dr Dec (Talk) ~~ 22:11, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This happens to me as well. Except that once it has these little boxes, it doesn't mark the page as patrolled. And I've done the above advice as well. --ScythreTalkContribs 16:29, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Probably the WMF changes... I'll have a look if i get chance Reedy 22:15, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not to mention that this happens with AWB too for me. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 09:53, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
@ Declan Davis, Chrome doesn't matter. AWB and NPW use IE as the engine [or whatever] --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 10:16, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Now we're just going to have to wait till somebody finds a way to fix this? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 18:35, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm having this same issue. The program was working fine until this error came up in the middle of my most recent session with it. ThemFromSpace 00:54, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have the same issue too. Even if I log in, both when it prompts, and when I use the internal browser, the error keeps popping up. Anyone have an idea about what this might be? MC10 (TCGBL) 03:03, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Still no change[edit]

Still having problems.. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 10:49, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, a fix needs to e found an updated app released. Reedy 10:57, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So nobody knows what the problem is? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 11:38, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just had a poke at it, i can "login" fine, but it doesnt seem to work reliably.. But then i can login via the internal browser, and seem to be able to work... Hmmm Reedy 23:17, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Freezes after log in; too many problems[edit]

It appears that NPWatcher is causing more problems than solving them. It is virtually unusable and unreliable. I ask that you fix this situation or rescind my approval. Too many problems; too many bugs; the program is sh*t! FIX NOW OR RESCIND MY APPROVAL! WadeSimMiser (talk) 23:05, 29 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
