Ah! You rumbled my game ... that is OR to link the omission of Albert to a falling out with Harry, but I have never seen it mentioned anywhere, so I have carefully complied with OR requirements by the juxtaposition of several facts, allowing the reader to draw their own conclusion. Bot for WPAus locations[edit]

What is wrong with having a bot create a stub for places? That locatilities To-do list is probably less than 5% of the total. Lots of these places are small towns far away. Would you rather have someone toil to collect the basics like population, postcode, electoral division, climate data, templates and categories, when these basic facts and editing tasks can be automated? If these hundreds (if not thousands) of remaining Australian towns and settlements were created then other editors would be more likely to check backlinks, add notable facts, photos, citations, etc. I thought that this bot proposal was compatible with WPAustralia's goals. Don't assume it isn't going to be accurate, its just upgrading a set of places whose articles are non-existant to stub class. - Shiftchange (talk) 03:05, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly I am philosophically opposed to force-growing the encyclopedia in this manner. Bots are great for performing midless repetitive edits, not so much for things such as creating articles. The job of finding details on postcodes, population, electorates, etc. isn't not a straightforward as one may think and I see the potential for huge amounts of unchecked error. This will take time to firstly find and fix and in priniciple, I feel that a non-existent article is better than one that is chock-full of errors. Secondly, I abhor sub-stubs; articles that consist of one or two sentences, an infobox and a navbox. A blue link is a promise to a reader that the information on the linked page will be relevant and useful. These bot-generated articles fail on both counts. At least a red link is honest and says that we have nothing relevent on the topic at present.

I have written plenty of stubs on small Australian places and will continue to in the future. I am in the process of adding infoboxes to Queensland towns, having already done Vic. and Tas. ( ). So I understand some of the drudgery involved. Even so, I am opposed to the project as a whole and especially so here in Australia—where we have plenty of editors to create the articles in a competent, diligent manner and where the problem of systemic bias surely doesn't exist. -- Mattinbgn\^talk 09:23, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the fixes. I will be coming back to the FAC for another round of comments, but first I want to make a clean-up pass myself. It's easier for me to fix any obvious mistakes myself than to clog up the FAC with typos and such. I dispute the claim that it is non-notable, pointing to an article in The Murray Valley Standard as proof of the clubs notoriety, which has a circulation of almost 4,000 (ABC audited). In regards to the SAASL being a purely social competition, the SAASL is the level of football (soccer) below the three professional leagues of South Australia which are run by the FFSA. I have tossed up taking WP:CANVASS to MfD but figure it would be tilting at windmills. It is unenforceable, promotes ignorance as a virtue, assumes admins and bureaucrats are morons with no judgement skills at all and worst of all, it is used as a blunt stick to stifle debate. In the last case, it is used mainly by editors, who—having never actually read the guideline— are attempting to have arguments defeated on the grounds of process rather than merit. How unfortunate. I think there's close to zero chance of both appearing. Now, I might be biased, but I think Bradman is the more "important" of the two characters. The new system at Today's FA requests penalises where another similar article has appeared recently and penalises very heavily for such close proximity. Even if it overcame that hurdle, I have a strong hunch Raul would decline it anyway. The irony is palpable! You could drop Sandy Georgia a line and ask her advice. There may be something that could be done. 100th anniversaries are rare and notable. There are also lots of slots in the month that have no real claims on them. Maybe pushing him to the end of his birth month would fit the bill, to keep max distance between the two cricket bios? I have not been west of Swan Hill in 25 years although I would love to get back to Mildura. Indeed, I have never been to Robinvale/Euston in my life despite my (undeclared) interest in a fair maiden originally from that area! I am definitely keen to get back out that way. Michael Witt[edit]

Hi Matt - I would like some advice on handling the Michael Witt article. It's basically a fan-site and my attempts last year to improve the article were met with total resistance by the anon ip "owners" of the article. I haven't attempted to do any more since then but I've just deleted some unreferenced peacocky/fannish chunks which were recently added and I've added an {{nofootnotes}} template to the page. I'm not expecting my edits to be welcomed any more than they were last time. Can I treat the ip as a vandal at all if it is all reverted? VIC tags[edit]

Hi, I have restored the Victorian country tags. I apologise for causing any trouble on this front.

Re usefulness: the VIC category itself wasn't so bad, but the Melbourne one is beyond useless. (Until this morning, every tram service was listed as needing a photo!) When I was in Melbourne myself with 8 days and a camera, I accessed it but in the haze of listed suburbs there, couldn't figure out what was priority and what was not (or even what was nearby) from the 360 or so entries and whether any of them had in fact been "requested" at all, and gave up - this will be the problem of *anyone* who tries to use that category with the same aim in mind. As a former database developer, too, I'm well aware of the concept of redundancy and the fact that this list will quickly become desynchronised with the number of articles actually needing photos - the more incoherent and complex, the less likely it is to be updated as the less likely anyone will use it. Is there any way the use of this category can be improved, or should it be replaced with a WikiProject to-do list which can be categorised? Orderinchaos 05:50, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately all I have is secondary data from the ABS and the former Department of Local Government in the 1980s, and library lookups in SLV and searches on the Net. There seems to be a genuine split! Even Google can't decide - one (&) is only weakly preferenced above the other (and). I had used the ABS data from yearbooks as my primary reference. Government Gazette No S2 (Thurs 19 January 1995) s.3(2)(n) says "On the appointed day the following councils cease to exist [...] Shire of Newham and Woodend". Section A on the first page repeats this particular spelling of it. If we go with that spelling, we now have an RS for it. Confirmed that the ABS census district was "&" from two sources. Regions[edit]

I think there must be some sort of legitimate institutionalised region names in states other than qld and wa - it seems odd that there is such disquiet in the vic and nsw area - surely there are specific fed and state legal distainctions for regions? Satu Suro 03:21, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I work in the LG field in NSW and I have never heard or seen of them (not to say that it doesn't exist, however). Various departments (Health, Education, Tourism, State Dev) have various versions, none of which are consistent with others and none of which have any legislative backing (other than perhaps health). The ABS definitions of regions may be as good as we are going to get, but that would rule out Riverina, surely a well recognised region but with no ABS recognition. Hmmm- In WA we have twice the number than are actually at the article - no one has untangled the issue much and many of them are not enumerated - I would class what Telstra used to have for phone areas, (ocde areas). surely the Local Government association would have some way to differentiate councils, surely SES and emergency authorities would have was of desginating areas, there would be the areas as designated by the weather bureau, and the ag dept - I am sure there is hope for the states other than Qld and WA to have good regional chaos articles - it just needs very careful writing. And in the regions of a state regions article I presonally wouldnever allow - for one type of regional label to rule out another type, its against the general import of the reason for the article in the first place - which is to show the range of different ways the state(S) are divided up by various sources of info - Satu Suro 10:52, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As one of the team that got Riverina to FA status I am not against regional articles and categories, but even agreeing on a definition of Riverina caused some major heartache (and attracted a troll) before some good will saw us get over the line. I guess I am a little nervous of the work involved in getting some consensus about what makes up the [[[Wimmera]] as opposed to the Western District; what area the Goulburn Valley takes in (does it include Yarrawonga for example). Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/North Central Victoria gives some idea of my concerns when writing articles about regions. The idea of North Central Victoria still means nothing to me and I daresay it means little to most Victorians but here we are with an article about it. How I understand it is that it's not really a fixed region,(Use the "Riverina" which I could go on about) SES HQ in Wagga Wagga uses the "Murrumbidgee"[3] as it's region rather then the Riverina then you have REROC (Riverina Eastern Regional Organisation of Councils)[4] then RIVROC (Riverina Regional Organisation of Councils)[5]. Also before the councils lost control of the electricity control Murrumbidgee County Council (Griffith, Leeton ect) and Southern Riverina County Council (Wagga Wagga), so it seems that the regions are not really legally binding. My main aim in working on the WA article was to show that different authorities and non authoritiies over time have divied the state up to the point we have to accept that there are differences- and not to get bothered in any way by the fact there might be up to 6 or 7 ways of understanding what is south west western australia - but simply to get it into an article. Re: Parramatta[edit]

The edits I have made have mainly been wikifying in nature, i.e. I have made the article consistent with other articles of its type e.g. Sydney, Melbourne, etc. On closer examination it shall be seen that very little has in fact been changed, but it has only been rearranged in good faith such that all information is put in its proper place.
