No, I will still be here but probably a lot less active. The main reason I decided to remove my sysop status is the message above. Not that there is anything about the message in itself that upset me, but I realised that I really did not want to go to the effort to answer his/her request properly, i.e. discuss creating an article in userspace, explain what reliable sources are etc. If I am not prepared to put the time and effort in to defend my actions as an admin (i.e. permanently protecting the article from re-creation) then I have no business acting as an administrator.

I never really enjoyed the role and only did it more out of a sense of obligation than anything. I had not performed any routine admin tasks, i.e. CSD, RPP, AfD, PROD for some time and only really used the admin tools where I happened to run into a situation in the normal course of my editing. I hope that avoiding the drudgery of admin tasks (and removing the sense of obligation that hung over my head) may rekindle my enjoyment of editing, which has taken a bit of a beating of late. Well, I expect American spellings to become widespread and then official in Australia within a decade or two, and eventually in Britain, at which time the problem will go away. But encyclopedias should follow changes like that, not lead them, so we're stuck with WP:ENGVAR for a while yet. Nice shots. :) I've uploaded mine in case they're needed, but yours are much more useful, and I would have seen less than you - it took most of the day to sail across, due to a strong headwind, and we left early the next day to avoid some worse winds that were on the way. So I barely saw more than the marina, and the cloud cover didn't help the pictures. I did grab a shot of the beacon, but that won't help the article. :) - Bilby (talk) 14:04, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Left justified images

Hi Matt...

Previous attempts to start a discussion on any 'good idea' of mine, in various articles, have not got any response, so the new tactic is to make a reasoned change and wait for a reaction. I think that the 'new' layout of the Esk article is an improvement over the 'old', and I like your placement of the smaller image in the infobox (Why didn't I think of that?) However, any reverts to the previous format in the few articles I have changed will not faze me, and I am in no hurry to do more of the same - more important things to do with my life.

If you want to delete unreferenced articles, there is a process. PROD, AfD, CSD etc. etc. Moves, without any notice to anyone, of articles such as Bennett King is an abuse of process. again, I am sorry. I appreciate your diligence in watching these pages. I don't know if you have been following crappy wikipedia politics, but there are propositions to delete 50,000 unreferenced articles, including Ben_Oxenbould, Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Biographies_of_living_people#View_by_Ikip This started when three disruptive admins deleted several hundred articles like Ben_Oxenbould. One minute those Ben_Oxenbould was there, and boom, the next minute Ben_Oxenbould was deleted. This administrators wanted to do this to the 50000 other Category:All unreferenced BLPs articles. This is the text book example of "abuse of process".

Unfortunately, at this point all unreferenced BLPs will be deleted, as a majority want them deleted.

So why did I move this page? I helped mediate a HUGE edit war over 4,000 articles last summer. We merged all the articles to stop the AFDs. We discussed the idea of incubating all of these articles, so they would be off main space, but editors could source them. We started tonight.

I did not want to delete the redirect for at least 2 days, to allow editors who are watch listing the article time to mention their concerns. But two admins counseled this would be best.

I look forward to talking with you some more about this. Again, I am sorry for any trouble I may have caused you.

I am not interested in getting involved with the politics swirling around unreferenced BLPs. My personal views on BLPs leans more towards the "get rid of them" side of the spectrum, but through existing policy and procedure. I deplore the out-of-process deletions made by people who views on BLPs I generally support and I wish they would stick to process. However, pre-emptive moving of articles out of mainspace to avoid deletion is a cure worse than the initial disease, insofar as it massively disrupts Wikipedia but doesn't fix the underlying issues. A defamatory claim in an unreferenced article in userspace or Wikipedia space is just as defamatory as a claim in article space, is it not. If I was running around deleting unreferenced BLPs in article space, I would not hesitate to delete these so-called "incubated" articles too, and for the same reasons. A pox on both your houses, I say. Little wonder I am happier at Commons nowadays, without the bullshit games that fester here on enwiki. -- Mattinbgn\^talk 23:13, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

Accusations of sockpuppetry by obvious sock puppets themselves deserve little credence, especially when they are only attempting to stir up trouble. Talk pages are places dedicated to the improvement of the encyclopedia, not venues to indulge in internecine battles, especially when the battle appears on the face of it to be an off-wiki affair. I little know or care about BlackJack alternate accounts and I am not interested in participating in any such discussion. I do know, however, that the comments made by the obvious sockpuppet was a troll and only acting to disrupt Wikipedia. I chose not to give the sockpuppet the opportunity. I am responding to your comments on my talk page. If you had bothered to actually take notice of my edits and my comments you would have noticed that it was me who added the citation required tags to this information about Stokes in the first place - information which is not actually in dispute but does require references. The adding of these tags is primarily intended to give editors the opportunity to add such references - it is not an invitation to just remove such comments, especially without proper explanation. As the information was removed by an anonymous editor without adequate explanation it was, I assert, perfectably acceptable to revert this edit. No indication was given that the information was removed because it was unreferenced. You seem to be interpreting the BLP policies in ways to suit yourself. If you can, please direct me to any part of the BLP policies that might clearly support your claim that my reversal of the removal of these comments was not permissible on the basis that the removed comments included citation tags - especially when the person removing the comments didn't obviously do so on this basis. Mass image uploads

Do you use a good tool do expedite it? I've got about 200 images of the Southern Stars and don't want to do it manually, which could take a few hours on this internet connection, ie cut and paste teh description, wait for 30-40 seconds to upload, back and forth, maybe longer. I spend hours manually uploading each image and my supposed "broadband" connection may as well be two tin cans and a piece of string! It is drudgery, but at least it is mindless drudgery, so I can watch the cricket or a DVD in the background. As for tools there is Commonist or Nichalp's script. I have thought about using them but my very limited tech skills and my low level of tolerance for not being able to get things to work has put me off. I haven't used them so I can't really recommend either tool unfortunately. Can I suggest creating creating your specific categories before uploading (as specific as you can get) inside the more general parent categories. For example, I would create a category for the event with parent cats such as the ground, the teams, the cricket season etc. Commons is not as Gestapo-like about categories as here. It didn't work on the first computer but is now linking up here on Commonist, which is quite easy, no installation needed, just click and opens menu. I just set the tag as "Information |Description=Named person engaging in named action at Adelaide Oval nets/training ground |Source=Photo by YellowMonkey |Date=8/9 February 2010 |Author=YellowMonkey |Permission=Own work, copyleft: Multi-license with GFDL and Creative Commons " and then cut and paste the name tags for the cats into the slot for each player then it does it all at once, presuming there's no crash YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 05:40, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Firefox does that alot (crashing)! Not as bad as Internet Explorer though! Uploading a 1mb file kills my download (browsing) and it is worse if its more (in file size).

I've got a few photos I took today yet to be uploaded but I'll be using Commonist to do that! Was ok when I was walking along the fire trail below the peak then seen a few storms to the south (lightning seen and thunder as well), tried to get a treeless spot but failed and watched it fade away as it moved towards me, so did a u turn back to were I seen another trail which took me to the almost treeless peak (swearing at myself for not using that trail in the first place).

But by the time I got there another storm was forming slightly to my south/southwest so I had to get some quick photos (See: File:360 degree panorama from the peak of Rocky Hill.jpg but pity the toolserver isn't working) however I wasn't quick enough! Just as I started to descend down the hill it started to rain and a crack of thunder over head (Worst place to be as not only is it the second highest hill but being almost treeless makes me almost the highest point) but as you can tell I got down ok but had a few close calls! Refering to the thread of comments regarding the discrepency regarding Bob Cristofani's death location, I can confirm, as his son still living in England, that he did indeed die in Fleet, Hampshire, and not in Canberra. He had been living in England since leaving the diplomatic service.

Pushpin maps for suburbs

Point taken- a toss-up on those; a few coords were needed as well so I added the pushpin map; though I did avoid Geelong subs and obviously Melb. subs as well except for a few in the outer Yarra Ranges which I will get around to. South Australia is a bit of a problem with the resolution; would be nice to have a map of the populated SE of the state as a default (based on coords) if this were technically possible; Queensland doesnt look too good but that is the fault of its shape, perhaps another argument for a state of North Queensland/Capricornia. Railway stations

Please don't move the pages, I'm sorry for not creating the redirected ones, I didn't know I was supposed to. Railway station naming does not appear to be consistent around the world - the systems that people seem to have created here made sense around Australia - that's the reason I started to create articles because it made sense to me. If you want inconsistency, New Zealand even calls their stations "Train Station" which is not what they are called in British Commonwealth countries. Bookscale (talk) 10:39, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Busy busy busy!

Yep, as you can tell with the heading, I've been busy! I don't mind having some event but hate it when it all happens in one hit! Missed out on the historic (100 years of flying) mail delivery from YSWG to YTEM by David Lowey in the TAM's Ryan STM aircraft, the first day of the Wagga Pro-AM and the first Eastern Australia Airlines (QantasLink) Q400 flight from YSSY - YSWG.

Sunday was a nightmare! Had stayed up all night Saturday after my home web server had a hissy fit when I installed some OS updates (which killed Apache2, making http impossible to the server), reinstalling the OS while a storm thought it would pop by (Was doing a netinstall of Debian) which I was hoping not to fry my electrical equipment! After that was done (after 5am on Sunday morning), I got a few hours rest but was woken by thunder, got online to see what was forecasted, only though we would get 10 - 20mm, as the day went on it was clear that we had more then what I thought! Once it stopped raining (4pmish) headed around town to see what I could find (flooding in known spots had cleared by the time I got to them but the drains were still flowing high and fast) and headed out to the lake. Any one would have thought that the rain had finished!

An hour or so later it was clear that more rain and storms were coming in, so headed back home (with a water logged yard) in time, after that it just kept raining! I just can't get over at how much rain we had! I recorded 147.1mm for Sunday! Friday I recorded 32mm so my March total is at an insane 182mm.

I was shocked to see Lake Albert almost full (YouTube) after it almost dried up (going to be a bit hard to get a photo from here!), the river up to its banks (15 feet (4.57m) but 4.63m was the peak [though classed below minor flood level]) and how wet the ground is, infact we even have a few trees falling over!

Today was contacted by a media organisation about a local issue (you will hear about it if you watch SBS in the future). In all I've just been flat out with a few edit here and there! Anyway I'll stop talking crap, but I do hope you had a few mills of rain and missed out on the damaging storms! Bidgee (talk) 14:43, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

You have been busy! We had about 75 mm of rain over the three days but seemed to avoid the extremes further north and south (Shepparton copped it hard on Sunday). Having said that my gutters couldn't cope and water started pouring out of the eaves on the north side of my house on Saturday night. No hail here however, and only some local roads cut. We are all hoping here that water starts rolling into Lake Hume as this rain at the moment is only watering bindii-s! Not bad! Farmers must have a huge smile on their faces at the moment, as this has been the first decent rains we have had for some time! Though some city folk thin the drought is over, but its far from over! Seen the Shepparton footage (was watching the radar and seen a mean looking echo on the radar out near Balranald before having to go offline), reminds me of the storms Wagga got in 1998 and 2001 which both had a huge damage bill in just the Wagga LGA.

The Shepparton storm passed just east of us here but hit Deni pretty bad too. Farmers here are cautiously optimistic but it all depends on the follow up rain. Lots of crossed fingers here!

One thing the rain has done is caused an outbreak of bindii-s (catseyes or catheads) which are going to be had for feet and tyres!

Haha, pity I didn't see this one - I think the entire CBD of Melbourne being underwater (the last major storm they had, which I was there for in 2002, flooded Fairfield and produced some impressive lightning but didn't do much else) kind of would put this at a level well above notability, even if just for the massive insurance costs. Whoops, meant to get back and reply to this. The problems with the Southern Stars are the same problems with most of the pre-internet players from anywhere other than Aust. and Eng. - lack of quality sources. Hughes really only needs a bit of a run through on prose and MoS issues. I am not too sure what else needs adding in terms of content. I have seen the Fingo book on the shelves but haven't picked it up yet. The letters from Miller wouldn't surprise me; they almost came to blows in the West Indies. Bradman engineering Johnson's ascension to the captaincy has the ring of truth to it, indeed it would surprise me if Bradman did not play the leading role in the whole process - he seemed to have the final say on most matters in that day! Hi. I am sorry you have chosen to take offence over my removal of your incorrect and uncited content. As I am sure you know, uncited information can be removed by anyone. I considered adding a {{fact}} to it, but I knew the material was wrong so removal was the best option. To answer your query about why it was wrong, I am going to assume you are a New Zealander. Like many New Zealanders, you seem to have a poor understanding of Australia's federal structure. Industrial relations, including the setting of public holidays and their observance, is a matter for the states. This includes "national" holidays such as Australia Day and Anzac Day. For example Labour Day in Vic. falls in March, in Qld. falls in May and in NSW falls in October. The observance of these days varies from state to state and different states follow different rules regarding public holidays falling on a weekend. I didn't add any of this for two reasons. One, I am unaware of the various states are doing with Anzac Day this year and two, it isn't really relevant - especially in the article lede. It isn't wrong -- Monday 26 April is the Anzac day holiday throughout Australia this year -- and if you had bothered to check you would have seen this. Your assumption that I am a kiwi with a poor understanding of Australia's federal structure is a laughable insult, and your mention of holidays which are not pertinent to this article is plain misleading. Your claim that the day of observance of the holiday isn't relevant to the intro is a matter of opinion. This is a significant distinction between the two countries and therefore deserves prominent mention. Firstly complaints about insults are rich coming from someone who started his initial comment to me with "Are you here to build an encyclopedia or to be a policeman?" At least I was polite when assuming your ignorance on Australia's federal system. Secondly, I would say as a general rule material should not be added until it is sourced. Adding unsourced material and then complaining about its subsequent removal is just silly and stating I have a positive obligation to source (or correct) information added by others is flat-out wrong. If you want your material kept, source it when adding it - otherwise you take your chances ... Thirdly, I know that the Anzac Day holiday has been observed on different days in different states in the past and therefore I know that your statement is at least partially incorrect, as I said to begin with. The fact that this year, the holiday is observed on the same day throughout Australia does not preclude the possibility that this may not be the case in future years. If you have evidence to the contrary, add it to the article. Fourthly, the other holidays were included in my response above as a demonstration of a principle that you appeared to be (and still appear to be) unaware of. Fifthly, adding the information about the observance day in such a prominent place is potentially misleading because it invites the reader to assume that day is commemorated on different days in Aust. and NZ when this is not the case.

I am happy to work with you about the inclusion of this information which, contrary to your claim, I do think is relevant to the article (although not in the lede). Again, contrary to your claim, I have not had a lot to do with this article in the past and I am certainly not claiming "ownership" of the article. Rather than spitting the dummy and throwing your toys out of the pram, you could actually find a reliable source and add it to the article. The article is Anzac Day (which is *always* on the 25th), not the Anzac Day holiday. The dawn service and all related events are held on the actual day regardless of what day the employers give their workers a break (and not all do!) The fact that the holiday can occur on the Monday after is actually a quirk of state laws around Australia which applies to every single state or national Australian holiday (even Christmas, and I don't see any similar edits to that article.). Portland Sustainability Group on the Portland, Victoria page

Hi Mattinbgn

Could you please explain the decision to undo a contribution I made to the "Portland, Victoria" page to include the Portland Sustainability Group under a topic of "Environmental and Sustainability"?

I'm not sure if it needed more supporting information (as it was only a link), or if reference to a local environmental and sustainability group is not permitted.

The group is not for profit and run by volunteers who are committed to helping the town/region reduce their individual and collective environmental/climate impacts.

There's no "15 minutes of fame" factor in including a reference to the PSG on the Portland,Vic page, and no personal references or agenda. The group is geared to being a positive, long term, and increasingly significant part of what defines Portland, and it is already officially endorsed by the community itself, the local council, industry group, schools sector, and other service clubs.

I'm happy to supply some copy for the entry if that's what is required. Please let me know what needs to happen for the PSG to be a part of Portland's Wiki entry, as I/we feel inclusion in the 'free encyclopedia' makes perfect sense and is very positive for all parties - especially people wanting to know if Portland Vic HAS a sustainability group.

I was in town yesterday (from about 1pmish) but he was at the hospital, by the time I got there he was gone from there as well. Well I can't really add the latest bit of the saga (I do plan to add anything pre 2010) to the Wagga Wagga Base Hospital as I know have a COI, I can talk about it off Wiki.

How the hell did I miss this! I rode all the way out (via the old Olympic Highway) to Bomen back in October, I was going to try and get to the 2WG broadcast tower but didn't have much time left and was low on water (I too 4 litres) and needed to get to an event in West Wagga (on Edward Street) so I rode back via the Olympic Highway, last time I do that!

Thank you for doing The Rock! Saved me a trip out there (was going to try riding it but you have my legs! LOL) as over 40km one way is rather long! I was also thinking of riding to Junee too but again over 40km is a bit too far, but the longest ride I've done was to Uranquinty (never again I'll do it though, Dunns Road is hell!) but I've noticed on the Civic Guides that an advert for the Uranquinty Hotel is using my image without any credit. Well the day I headed out to Uranquinty, I saw the sign which had the distances to towns along the highway and seen 30km to the rock. If I had more time I may have stupidly tried it! But wished that I tried the 1km extra passed the power station to the old branch line's level crossing.

The drought is over?

Got to love how the city folk publish that the drought is over when it isn't! Sure we had a lot of rain in March but that fell in one to two days, most areas (in southern to central NSW) missed the peak of the December and February rain events and April was half the average and May isn't looking much better, farm dams maybe 80-90% full but the storage dams are still below 40%. Really not looking forward to next spring, I think we should see the worst locust plague in 10-20 years. Bidgee (talk) 15:41, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

While the start to the season is encouraging, here in the southern Riverina there is no talk of the drought ending. Hume and Dartmouth still need a lot more water to see allocations return to a useful level (that said, some rice is now being grown in the Deniliquin region for the first time in years). The locust situation looks ominous, given the rain in NW NSW and SW Qld. As soon as the warm weather hits, they will be down this way in huge numbers. Yep, the dams need the inflows and really they have missed out on a lot of the rain events, I really think it will be a dry winter. Hume Dam is about 16%, Blowering and Burrinjuck are in the mid 30% range and poor old Wyangala Dam is at 7% IIRC, if these dams served Sydney or any other capital city for that matter, they would be screaming drought but big wigs in State and Federal Government are looking at ways of stopping the financial help to farmers to save a few dollars and make the budget look good. I don't know where The Australian got its facts from as I'm not seeing where the BoM stated the drought was over, they only stated that the short-term deficiencies have eased but not the long-term.

I can remember the good old days in the MIA, most paddocks had rice but now it is just a waste land with paddocks and empty channels covered in weeds.

With the locusts, I think we will see a lot of farmers not plant and some taking a risk. 2010-11 IMO will see a bigger plague then that seen in 2004-05. Bidgee (talk) 00:38, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

Victoria (Australian state)

The best way to reverse this would have been to comment before the move. Clearly several versions of the name are widely used so in the end I think that someone would be unhappy. While the sample is small it does show consensus. At this point, I'd suggest another discussion to move it back. If there is consensus then it can be moved. I'll note that in the article history, this page was moved to where it is once before and that move was reversed without comment so apparently this may be a case where consensus may change over time.
