Mboverload,

You have removed a fair amount of information from this article as you say it "belongs on the school website and can easily change". You removed information about the inter-house competitions and the school timetable.

Can you elaborate on this please, as I don't see where you're coming from. The house competitions are a fundamental element of the school's life which have been taking place for over 300 years. It is an interesting and relevant piece of the article. Indeed, it would seem strange to keep the information about the houses but not the two events which they, to be honest, exsist for. Do you agree? The events run each year, and so the holder of each trophy is unlikely to "easily change".

The school timetable, whilst perhaps slightly less noteworthy of inclusion I admit, is nonetheless a piece of information relevant to the school, and again, can you explain why it is "easily changeable and therefore belongs on the school's website"?

I would appreciate it if you would make your intentions and wishes clear on the article's talk page in future so that some consensus may be achieved before such a major edit is done.

Thanks for a quick response. I look forward to working together in the future Victor Greenstreet 11:02, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MessedRocker On-The-Fly

[edit]

In spirit of your idea to publish your AIM handle on your user page, which is a great idea, I created a box for my user page called "MessedRocker On-The-Fly". Since you inspired me for the idea, can you tell me what you think of it? —this is messedrocker (talk) 08:13, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hehe, that's cool. Just a suggestion: Use a throwaway AIM and email handle, just in case someone wants to take issue with you. Use GAIM, I actually have 10 different SNs on different networks for different kinds of people I meet =P I've actually had 2 different users message me so far, and they actually turned into great discussions =D --mboverload@ 08:18, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Helping out with the AWB spellcheck list

[edit]

Hi there, I saw that you run the commonly used AWB spellcheck list. I tried to start one of my own, with the intention of creating a massive tool (the settings.xml file is about 250kb! See User:Draicone/DSCL) but it didn't quite work, for reasons I'm still trying to figure out. Instead, with your permission I'd like to either adapt your script to suit my massive spellchecking options (I'll add case-sensitivity, ideally) or help out with yours (adding entries, really) to make it more complete. --Draicone (talk) 08:23, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you check out my latest release you will see that I'm already converting the list you use (it seems t be pretty common). Although a lot of it can be done with find-and-replace, as you can see I include the purals and other varients of most of the words. Every single line must be edited by hand and checked. Read the regex article and learn how I do each line - it's based an just a few simple operations that I'm confident you could learn. I'm already done with all the C words, which I'll release next week. Choose a random letter and see how well you do. As you can see at the top I'm on vacation and I got a minor injury that hurts like a bitch so I wont be able to chat with you in real time. Good luck =D - mboverload
Sure, I'll see what I can help out with. I personally hate SVN and am totally incapable of using it so I'll just email you changes I make or something. --Draicone (talk) 12:22, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AWB

[edit]

Your AWB software is currently creating typos/problems in articles. See List of songs about drugs, World Trade Center, Timeline of trends in music (1960-1969), and I am sure there are others. Please fix these problems and modify your software to not break image links/correct typos in proper names. Thanks Schicksal 01:05, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As I said in the latest edit summaries, all edits are going to be completely checked for errors. Thanks for alerting me, and I am addressing your concerns at this moment. --mboverload@ 01:37, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The AWB software is causing you to create mindless, autonomic edits of many Wikipedia pages. This does not fit well in the scheme of having Wikipedia a "user-based" encyclopedia, not a "automatic software" encyclopedia. Please throughly go through all the edits you make before taking action using your "precious" software as a lot of carelessness can be reversed when doing so.
(note that I called his software "precious" as he used it as evidence of his "frequent edits" in his recent bid for adminship.)
John Cho 01:08, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, I didn't use my edit count at all. Please do not misrepresent the facts. --mboverload@ 02:27, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I Think you need to halt using that software all together. You seem to be abusing that software by editing millions of pages with nonsensical "typo" edits that ruin images on pages and such. Seriously, please be more careful with this software unless you can harness its powers correctly and accuratly.
John Cho 02:20, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, you're User:Ste4k (declare your sockpuppets, I have been in a dispute with this user). Please don't just hop on another user talking to me to throw in a punch. I don't edit millions of pages, and had you been involved in this you would have known that in the edit summary I said I was going to audit (ie, check) every single edit I made. --mboverload@ 02:25, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm User:Ste4k? That's headline news to me. I don't even know the character and if you check the dates of my contributions you will know and realize that I'm not a "sock puppett" of Ste4k. I am just opposing your random, frequent, mindless edits that litter Wikipedia. I do not like to see my Wikipedia (the PEOPLE'S (I'm a person) encyclopedia) getting littered with these non-sensical, software-autonomic edits. Please get on all your edits and fix them, I would appreciate that, and nothing will come about this. Thanks.
John Cho 02:50, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not even going to bother refute that. Bye bye. --mboverload@ 04:32, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Note: AWB has been updated and all problems here have been 100% fixed and will never happen again. --mboverload@ 08:35, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

spelling

[edit]

For what it's worth: "causality" and "casualty" are two different words. "Casualty" is a disaster, or a person lost through disaster. "Causality" is the relation between a cause and its effect. - Nunh-huh 06:25, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for alerting me. --mboverload@ 06:32, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, glad to have helped. - Nunh-huh 07:00, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This, for example, is a great example of your buggy software that you fail to use in an efficient manner. Please fix, and Wikipedia shall be at original, good means. Thanks. --John Cho 06:56, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The software is not buggy. And I didn't know there was a difference, using a program has no relevance. This is a friendly editor giving me a friendly tip about one small error that was fixed. Stop raking for crap Ste4k. --mboverload@ 08:33, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As stated previously, I do not have any idea who this fool Ste4k is. A lot of people seem to have disputes with you, as seen with your recent bid for adminship, and I don't see why just because Ste4k had issues with you that you can link me to him. I do my own edits, as seen in my contribs, never in relation to any of Ste4k's contribs, nor can you see any of my Wikipedia pages linking nor even remotely relating to Ste4k's.
On that note, I'm glad you resolved the issue. Please keep up with your good work in editing typo's and such but please also be more careful, is all I ask. Have a good one.-- John Cho 08:42, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Very few people have dispute with me, but I'll leave it on that note. Bye. (And yes, I'll be even more careful in the future at approving my words to replace) --mboverload@ 08:46, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bot Account & AWB

[edit]

Hi, I noticed from the AWB pages that you use a bot account and run AWB on it preforming edits.

I was thinking about doing this for myself.

Would i need to create a new account, request bot status on it (would this be done from my main user account?), and then request AWB authorisation on it?

Cheers

[edit]

Hi Mboverload,

Twice now you've incorrectly changed "attendent" to "attendant" at French conjugation, and twice I've had to revert the change. Please try to pay more attention to the changes your AutoWikiBrowser spellchecker is suggesting, and don't make the changes when they're incorrect.

Hydnjo's response to the blocking proposal

[edit]

I thank one and all - Jarandal, Antandrus, Titoxd, Xaosflux, TenOfAllTrades, mboverload, PseudoSudo, Knowledge Seeker, Haukurth, Deathphoenix, Zzyzx11, Tyrenius, Zscout370, AnnH, Rick Block, Tyrenius (again), Zscout370 (again) and NoSeptember for your support.

To Jeffrey O. Gustafson who initiated this block request I ask why? We have had no interaction until now so how do you come to this requested action at WP:AN? Did you come across my account during your own research or are you acting as a proxy for another admin/user with whom I've caused to be angry with me? In reviewing your contributions I see no such "letter of the law" before now and so I feel singled out by you and I have no clue as to why - that to me is most disturbing. If you've come to this action on your own then should I be always wary of another admin challenging the legitimacy of my account?

For TenOfAllTrades who advised me not to worry and Rick who made me laugh I give special thanks, you've helped me to not take this so personally. And to Jeff, thanks for being courteous in informing me of your action and for letting me feel that your heart wasn't for blocking me.
Except for my one explanation above, I haven't edited for a few days now so as to allow y'all to comment about this based on my history of contribution rather than my reaction to it.

I wanted to say all of this before it all goes to archive heaven. I still have a lingering concern that this may arise again and don't want to go through WP life looking over my shoulder or worrying that I might piss-off some admin and cause another inquiry about the legitimacy of my account. If any of you who have been so gracious as to take the time to support me here have any suggestions to prevent such an action, please drop your thoughts on my talk or by email.

Finally, on a personal note to all, I never ever expected so much supportive response from all of you. I know that I've been moody at times and have spoken in ways that I have regretted the next day. I hoped otherwise but it seemed that those unfortunate responses might end up being my legacy as they were the foremost in my mind. And so far as this being a "role account", I think that I'll let the descriptions of AnnH and NoSeptember (both above) stand as the most intuitive descriptions of this account. My (and our) warmest regards to all of you for your understanding and outward support for the continuation of hydnjo's user account and future contributions. Again, my delighted and humble thanks :-) --hydnjo talk 02:03, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

addendum: Jeff, I was confused at the outset in that I wasn't aware of the "role account" policy and then after becoming aware I was frustrated that I had made so many edits which could mislead someone to the conclusion that my account was a role account. I'm sorry that in my zeal to understand your actions that I posed the possibility that you were acting at someone else's behest. I have no evidence of that and it was improper of me to even mention that such a bizarre conspiracy was possible. I find myself guilty of "blaming the messenger" and posting an inappropriate comment about your motivation.

As for my account, I want to state that it is not a role account and I apologize for leaving the impression that it is one. "hydnjo" is the signature that I commonly use for much of my correspondence and thought it to be appropriate when I first started my WP account. The portmanteau is an acknowledgment of our shared existence and not an indication that Heidi and I share in editing at WP.

I thank you for your courtesy in informing me at the outset of the discussion at WP:AN and for your compliments about my contributions. The comments in my response were made in the shadow of my own frustration with my having left a trail of edits that could easily be construed as having come from either Heidi or myself. I sincerely apologize to you for making any suggestion as to your motivation in bringing up a legitimate policy question. You have a genuine concern for the orderly behavior of our editors and I thank you for initiating this discussion and providing me the opportunity to explain the nature of my account. --hydnjo talk 18:57, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:The Frosties Kid‎

[edit]

Hey there, thanks for the putting the explanatory template on Talk:The_Frosties_Kid. Might you also possibly place "No Personal Attacks" warnings on the talk pages of those who are still violating this daily? I refuse to engage in discussion with these kids as long as they continue the incivility. wikipediatrix 03:16, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure if there is a template for that, but if there isn't, I'll make it =D --mboverload@ 04:20, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
How long will this go on for, wikipediatrix you refuse to discuss anything and keep "running off" lookng for backup. I'm sure most people would be willing to discuss matters in a civl way, just give them a chance!
All users should present their arguments and stay for the discussion. --mboverload@ 08:51, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I already presented my argument from the start. Nothing's changed. I will only respond to non-insulting editors. wikipediatrix 13:47, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A favor to ask

[edit]

You may not remember me, but I dug up the links demonstrating an admin vocally opposing your RfA was acting out of spite and bad faith. Unfortunately, I was a few days too late.

Now I have a favor to ask. I'm seeing another RfA potentially get scuttled by a disingenuous opposition that's got everyone else nodding their heads in concern. See Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Andypandy.UK, especially supporting comment #60 and my response to opposing comment #15. Do you mind taking a look at this? --A. Re: AWB regextypofix

[edit]

Hi, I have been informed of something

I have just started using your spelling list, and it makes the edit summary strange

<summary text="Limited spellcheck + unicode + minor fixes using mboverload's RegExTypoFix with AWB" />

   <summaryindex index="Limited spellcheck + unicode + minor fixes using mboverload's RegExTypoFix with AWB" />

It ends up with With AWB using AWB

Do you think the with AWB should be removed?

Cheers

The Frosties Kid Discussion page

[edit]

Discussion pages are there to assert different points of view whether we agree with them or not. Tagging some discussion pages are fine but deleting whole sections of DISCUSSION????? is this good faith - you have never contributed to the space and you have even deleted comments made by another ADMIN - just tell me why??? Mike33 09:28, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Note The removal was actually done by an IP user, as you can see in this edit. They used the Google Toolbar, which cuts off text just like that. They most likely didn't mean or know about it. --mboverload@ 09:29, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ok i meant that you edited The Frosties Kid several times during the last few hours and removed several paragraphs see edit [[2]] and your later edit [[3]] - Those paragraphs of the discussion pages included comments from other admins. why were they removed? why were they not removed by admins who had commented to the articles? I thought that talk pages should only be edited by original users changing spelling :-Z Mike33 09:48, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Posted on the talk page: It has come to my attention that I accidentally deleted several sections. I've just fixed another small thing, I noticed in your changes such as this it says "developed => developed", this is due to your regex matching the correct spelling as well, but it is of no importance, but it won't show these identical replacements from now on. Roma People Illustration

[edit]

You will find if you look at the history of the 'Roma People' page that verifiable images of Roma People were put in, just not in one self-contained image. They were removed and replaced with the current unverifiable image.

What you might not notice is that the current image has not been verified since it was uploaded over seven months ago. This was pointed out on the image's talk page but someone has not only deleted all reference to this but also deleted the history of this discussion. It remains a legitimate warning that putting the current picture on the 'Roma People' page is vandalism because it is not verifiable (one of the three requirements for ALL Wikipedia content). The four pictures themselves that make up the 'FamousRoma.JPG' illustration could be put there, but I think you'll find that some very politically motivated vandals (e.g. Improv) will not only remove it and replace it with an unverifiable image but also block anyone who takes issue with the current picture.DoubleSpacing 15:33, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Like you have been told, using that picture is a fair use violation. --mboverload@ 17:01, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks?

Hey thanks for the spelling changes to the article I pretty much wrote. I wrote that article in huge chunks, so I'm not surprised that I had some spelling errors. hey mboverload. just wanted to warn you, be real careful with making a 100% 'foolproof' spellchecker. i've been spellcheck'n for quite a while now, and it ain't possible. i've made over 23,000 spelling corrections thus far, and hell if i don't get a monkey wrench in there once in a while. other than that, keep up the good work. :) JoeSmack Talk 04:38, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I know what you mean! =D Thanks for the advice =D --mboverload@ 10:17, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just a thought, instead of "reverting blatant promotion" which really wasn't promotion at all, would it perhaps have been more constructive for you to edit what you considered "blatant promotion" so that the paragraph was acceptable, instead of removing it entirely? - pm_shef 20:38, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It was unrecoverable. There are two unsourced claims in it, both of which can be removed by any editor. "Once elected, Di Biase insisted on moving the City Of Vaughan beyond its roots as a commuter community. Working with various levels of governments, Di Biase guided the City to economic success and influence." That isn't blatent promotion? --mboverload@ 20:40, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the "economic success" sentence, you're right, that was a bit much, but the "downtown" thing is evidenced by the Civic Centre. Take a look at my changes and tell me what you think. In terms of the "senior regional councillor" thing that you reverted. That is in fact why he was appointed Mayor over the other Reg.Counc. Joyce Frustaglio, simply because he was deemed the Senior Regional Councillor, so there was no need to remove that part. - pm_shef 20:43, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Although I still have a small objection, I'm not going to argue or revert you. Have fun with the article. --mboverload@ 20:47, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Slapping

[edit]

Don't be cheeky. ;) But it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Here are User:Lingeron's comments on the Talk:Anarchism page:

The Ungovernable Force, when I study I like to study the actual history and the events that happened rather than rely on another researcher's point of view. I like to just get the facts and then draw my own conclusions. It's like reading a newspaper. One can read a right or left leaning paper, where some of the facts are left out, and come to right or left leaning conclusions. I would much rather just get the facts and make up my own mind about the event.[7]

If that's not a tendency towards original research, I don't know what is. --AaronS 11:58, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Prod tags

[edit]

I see you already know about the Pokemon problem with RegExTypoFix, but does it also automatically remove prod tags? I'm looking at the history for an article that has come up on AFD [8] and it seems that the only change between the intial prod and the revert was yours. A regexp fix probably isn't a reason to deprod an article, so I'm guessing this is part of the code? Yomangani 12:10, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, that is extremely strange! I have brought it up with the developer of AWB here. Feel free to add anything in, and thanks for telling me about this. --mboverload@ 20:03, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Remember the database problem on the 21st? I think it was related to some edits being temporarily lost instead of a glitch with AWB. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 20:19, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's certainly a likely explanation. The same occured here around the same time, so probably a false alarm but worth keeping an eye on. Yomangani 22:44, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting the Nitcentral article

[edit]

Can you chime in with your vote? It's here.

  • IMPORTANT comment Due to the database problems we lost like 40 minutes - 3 hours worth of changes to some article. Many prods were accidentally removed. Francis Schuckardt

[edit]

Thanks for the input on the Francis Schuckardt article which you reverted. I could use some advice. I have about 20 newspaper articles in hard copy from the 1970s and 1980s. I have photocopied these and posted them at www.therougebishop.com so that others could read the entire articles, portions of which are cited in the Wikipedia article. (There are many other newspaper articles dealing with Francis Schuckardt that are not cited.) The newspaper's online sourcing of articles does not go back to the 1980s. How do I allow interested parties to read the actual articles if I cannot cite the one place that the articles are posted? Any ideas? Bernie Radecki 23:21, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article on Jim Shapiro

[edit]

Wow, thanks for the speedy deletion tag. However, it will soon be removed, because a couple of admins are so inclined. I removed unsourced negative statements made about this attorney, per Wiki guidelines, to the sentence you see there. The sole purpose of the article was to disparage this attorney - whether he deserves it or not, is irrelevant. The attorney has no notability, but for the claims made of his lack of ethics. That seems an odd reason to have an entry in Wikipedia. jawesq 07:25, 30 July 2006 (UTC

Hi, I'm not sure if you noticed, but the newest version of AWB already has your Typo regexes incorporated into it, and an option to tur, remove and change new typos. Musics vs. Music

[edit]

Note: This user is referring to a manual spellcheck I did using Microsoft Word, not WP:RETF
Thanks very much for cleaning up my spelling errors at Quartal and quintal harmony. I was curious, though, about one part of this edit. Why change "musics" to "music"? Is it an issue of style for you? - Rainwarrior 03:49, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! I always thought that music was a singular and plural word (plus Microsoft Word said it was a misspelling). I'm not 100% sure, though; Microsoft word isn't that great when it comes to the intricacies of the English language. I do see your point; I'll be sure to skip over it in the future. --mboverload@ 04:50, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's a less common word, comparable to the difference between "peoples" and "people". They're somewhat interchangeable, but there's a subtle difference... Maybe I could say "there are many different aboriginal peoples on this continent" but it would probably take a few more words to say the same thing with "people". Similarly with "musics", I was trying to subtly hint that an individual culture might have several distinct traditions of music. (Again, it's not a big thing, I was just wondering if you'd heard somewhere that it was bad style to use a word like "musics" or something.) - Rainwarrior 05:09, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion

[edit]

Don't put the RETF section at the very top of the AWB page. I think it should definitely be below the level of the registration and download instructions. That's just my opinion. alphaChimp laudare 21:01, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, I moved it and I think that's better. --mboverload@ 21:08, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great work!

[edit]

I'm awestruck that you have spent fifty+ hours of your valuable time developing your spellchecker to help Wikipedia. It is a true testament to your desire to make Wikipedia a better place. While this trinket is nowhere near the proper recognition you deserve, it is the best I can do as a humble Wikipedian of limited Wiki-means! Cheers! hoopydinkConas tá tú? 21:45, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RETF --> AWB

[edit]

Congrats on getting RETF into AWB, i'm now using it on top of my spelling errors list. My own old spellchecking list had about a 9.3% (and slowly rising) multiple error occurrence rate per article correction, and hopefully it'll raise that more now. We all put some strain scanning and changing articles with AWB, and fuck if i don't love being parsimonious! ;) JoeSmack Talk 14:30, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whoop, it just tried to change 'Adaptions' to 'Adaptations'. JoeSmack Talk 14:32, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it is pretty funny, although it is pretty disturbing that he got that angry over this. Similar things have happened many times before though. Academic Challenger 09:18, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AWB: I don't understand

[edit]

Your spellchecking has been a bit aggressive with corrections to variants of the word understand. It has changed "undertanding → understand" here and "undertands → understand" here. I don't think this can be what you intended. Gaius Cornelius 19:30, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, thanks. I have gone through my history, it showed up again one other time. --mboverload@ 19:43, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to let you know that your use of AWB/RegExTypoFix on the article Lancelot Andrewes caused the correct and archaic spelling of a word in the title of a cited pamphlet to be incorrectly changed to a modern spelling. You might want to be aware of this risk while using AWB and/or to make this risk known to other AWB users. I have corrected the error. --Dystopos 22:24, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I went to dictionary.com before I put it in, I guess I should go out and buy a real dictionary. Thanks for alerting me. --mboverload@ 22:27, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There are long periods of English history in which spelling was not standardized. This was largely a project of the 18th century, which is in part how American and British spellings have deviated. So for long periods, a writer was justified in choosing the spelling which best suited his or her ear and variants such as painful, painfull, peynful, paynefull, etc would all be, to a greater or lesser degree, accepted by readers. --Dystopos 23:22, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me. I'll totally keep that in mind in the future. --mboverload@ 23:24, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VandalProof login problems

[edit]

I've been trying to use VandalProof for three days and still get problems. I've tried on both a Win XP and a Win98SE machine, on the latter it crashes about 10% of the time. On both machines I have never managed to log in. I get Your log-in request failed. all the time. It looks like AmiDaniel tried re-adding me to the user list on Aug 2 - but with no change. Any suggestions? --Brat32 04:39, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, sorry =( --mboverload@ 05:08, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Try login over and over and over. Sometimes VP works. Usually it just fails miserably and is slow. Anyway, all the cool people are using VS these days. alphaChimp laudare 05:15, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, your reaction times are suffering man. It took you a full 4 minutes to register for VS. By the way, only 2 users have actually been successful in running it, and I'm not one of them. Do you run Linux? alphaChimp laudare 05:23, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have VMware =D --mboverload@ 05:25, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Although I have 5 computers within 3 feet they all run variants of Windows, since I do Win based software development. No customers run Linux. I tried it once a few years ago, and it crashed almost as much as Windows. Would be nice to have something that worked on Win98SE since that's my primary computer. --Brat32 06:18, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mean to be discouraging, but VandalProof used to be a good tool. Now it's just really sucking. I'm not saying that 1.3 isn't going to be good, but 1.22 is slow, inadequate and innefficient. Have you tried using Lupin's popups? It's got an RC feed that flags articles with suspicious edits. alphaChimp laudare 12:10, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have been following the dev of 1.3 closely. There are so many upgrades and new things he's doing...he has spent alot of time building a whole IRC bot that the client will talk with the whole time. --mboverload@ 12:12, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RETF

[edit]

Hi, one typo you recently added was <Typo find="\b(D|d)iffrent\b" replace="$1i?fferent" />, you can't put the question mark in the replacement, the special characters only apply to the find part. Also, just in case you misunderstood what was going on, when you did this fix, you only fixed the mistake you had just introduced, as a double backslash is also a perfectly acceptable way to escape the characters, just so you know ;-).

Also, you probably noticed the "compessing" i did by merging some regexes together, I think it would be advantageous all round if we aim to have 1 regex per word, this is more efficient/maintainable/versatile etc. There are still a lot that can be done. Martin 15:48, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

TypoFix

[edit]
<Typo find="\b(R|r)oomat(e|es)\b" replace="$1oommat$2" />
<Typo find="\b(R|r)oomate\b" replace="$1oommate" />

These two seem redundant. --ColourBurst 01:31, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

<Typo find="\b(T|t)olkein\b" replace="$1olkien" />

Tolkien should always be capital, since it's a person's name. --ColourBurst 01:37, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

<Typo find="\b(U|u)nmanouverable\b" replace="$1nmaneuverable" />

Not really a mistake, but the bot doesn't know if a page is British or not and so unmanoeuvrable could be a possible replacement (not likely, so that's why I called it "not really a mistake".). --ColourBurst 01:47, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

<Typo find="\b(V|v)irtualisation\b" replace="$1irtualization" />

Not sure about this one. Virtualise is in wiktionary, however. --ColourBurst 01:51, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

<Typo find="\b(W|w)arren(t|ts)\b" replace="$1arren$2" />

I believe this is "warrant", not spelled with an e. Wiktionary and dictionary.com give no matches for "warrent". --ColourBurst 01:53, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

<Typo find="\b(W|w)olontary\b" replace="$1oluntary" />

Should be "voluntary". --ColourBurst 01:54, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

<Typo find="\b(W|w)upport\b" replace="$1upport" />

Replacement should be "support". Maybe you mean to replace "suport"? --ColourBurst 01:56, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! Thanks! If you have anymore... =D --mboverload@ 04:23, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

<Typo find="\b(C|c)onserned\b" replace="$1oncerned" />

<Typo find="\b(F|f)lourine\b" replace="$1luorine" />
Possible variant; flouring.
<Typo find="\b(G|g)ridles\b" replace="$1riddles" />

<Typo find="\b(H|h)eathy\b" replace="$1ealthy" />

My Talk Page

[edit]

Sorry, perhaps I'm missing something, but I don't recall having asked you to mess around with the formatting of my talk page. Come to think of it, your making light of a serious conflict on this site is not appreciated. I'd appreciate it if you kept your non-constructive comments off my page from now on. Thanks. -- pm_shef 04:59, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to be confused. User:ED209 is the one who left you a comment. My last note to you 11 days ago was just explaining the 3RR policy and that you were not the only one blocked. I have _never_ changed your talk page's formatting. Good luck. --mboverload@ 06:07, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See the thanks you get for trying to help him? ED209 17:19, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dictionary.com

[edit]

I was trying to clarify the correct spelling of "humorous" and I see this website lists "humourous", although my paper dictionary does not, and neither do most online refs. I also note that they list "publically", which I think is a clear error. Should we continue to regard this as a good source? See also [9]

I'll hold off for now, but I think humorous is the right spelling. --Guinnog 11:18, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

one's the British spelling (with the "ou"). The other is the American spelling (with the "o") alphaChimp laudare 13:05, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure it's that simple. --Guinnog 13:13, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No British and Commonwealth standard spelling is humorous. People probably assume the 'u' was stolen from humourous by Americans just as they stole it from colour but it had been missing for a while before then. Jonathan Swift used humourous though and he was a very humourous man, while Shakespeare used humerous. MeltBanana 14:41, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, my understanding is that "humorous" is the standard spelling everywhere, and "humourous" is an unusual variant, found predominantly on Wikipedia, and listed on Dictionary.com
MB, apologies for thrashing this out on your talk page. --Guinnog 14:57, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've copied this to Wikipedia talk:Typo and suggest we continue the conversation there. --Guinnog 15:02, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar

[edit]

Tar muchly for the award but I feel unworthy of it. I don't believe that any of my words deserve being taken out of your word list as they are so rare and unusual they are unlikely to actually appear correctly used in wikipedia. Thanks anyway and keep up the excellent and invaluable speel checking work MeltBanana 14:41, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

diffrent -> different

[edit]

Something in either AWB or RegEx. was wanting to put those white squares (what you get when you dont have the character set) between the 'di' and the 'fferent'...

Any ideas?

Hello.

[edit]

I'm the one who added some pictures and all on 'Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti' , actually hes my father. Some of those pictures I found online and some he sent me himself. You can checkout my album:

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/shahzwar555/my_photos (The first and secondlast albums)

As for the gettyimages, I doubt they'd mind since I'm not using anyone elses pictures, I'm using Akbar Bugti's own pictures on his wikipedia link and pictures related to the whole situation. Also, the photographer who took the pictures a few months back Mr. John Moore is very hard to get hold of but I know they will not mind the pictures being put on wikipedia specially when its all directly related to my father Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti.

Please, consider your decision, I'd truly appreciate it. Yours gratefully,

               Shahzwar.
They will mind. You can't post copywritten images like that. Sorry. alphaChimp laudare 06:17, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

[edit]

This is in reference to this edit which you made on WP:ANI. This is a personal attack on another user and is in violation of WP:NPA and WP:CIVIL. Please refrain from making further such edits as this might result in a block. Best wishes. --Nearly Headless Nick 12:32, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to be confused, I was refering to the user the message was about, not the user posting the message. The message was about someone who made mutliple death threats against the family members of users, called other users cunts and anuses, and said that they will be going to hell and jacking off with the devil. Cheers! --mboverload@ 13:17, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Excuse me; I must tell you that I was not the one confused. Civility and personal attacks are not tolerated on Wikipedia even though they are against users who could be categorized under the WP:DICK category. Please use appropriate words at appropriate places. Regards, --Nearly Headless Nick 14:47, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, have fun with that =D --mboverload@ 21:31, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nearly Headless, you seem to be missing the forest for the trees. I've gone back and read the entire exchange. Yes, Mboverload could have avoided one deragortory word - but in the context of the entire situation that hardly calls for a warning as strongly worded as yours was. Maybe a suggestion to tone down the rhetoric would have been enough - In my opinion mboverload didn't really need the warning of a block. He's pretty much a model editor here and he was reacting to a pretty severe case of vandalism. Again, he could have phrased his comment a little more civilly - but you could have been a little more understanding and less heavy-handed in your warning... Well, we've probably exhausted this topic, let's all try to stay civil and assume good faith :-) Brian 21:49, 7 August 2006 (UTC)btball[reply]

RegExTypoFix anomalies?

[edit]

Since discovering RegExTypoFix I've become an avid user and admirer...

I just downloaded AWB 3018 and am finding corrections listed in the edit summary that are unchanged - an example from my User contributions page will show what I mean:

  • 13:38, 6 August 2006 (hist) (diff) m Philip Lombardo (RegExTypoFix Typos: beleived → believed, between → between, using AWB) (top)

between is unchanged but is listed. It does the same with transform → transform and unnecessary → unnecessary.

I suspect you may have done what I did when using regex search/replace strings and inadvertently included the correct spelling in the possible matches?

I must say, I am most impressed with all the work you have done to make this such a powerful tool. Cheers, Euchiasmus 14:04, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I saw that in some of my edit summaries, I have fixed both of them now. =D --mboverload@ 22:24, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the offer

[edit]

If you see somebody vandalizing my page with penis pics or things like that, then, yeah, go ahead and revert, I don't mind. But if it's just nasty comments, don't bother, I'm a grownup, I can handle nastiness.  :) Thanks for the offer. User:Zoe|(talk) 20:58, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
