Pennsylvania Turnpike

Hi. I was browsing though GOCE articles (revision histories) as I normally do to pick up tips by osmosis. I saw a "thank" blue link on a summary from yesterday from an editor who added to your edits during the drive - and I clicked it ! - purely out of idle curiosity as I have never noticed this link type before, would you believe, and wanted to know what it did. So, Oops and apologies if I've boobed here. Acabashi (talk) 23:51, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

No apology needed; I've seen that button too, but don't know yet what it is :-). All the best, Miniapolis 17:00, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

GOCE election

Hi Anne. I see you've nominated Baffle -- good idea. Would you like to be nominated yourself? You can self-nom, but if you'd prefer someone else to do it, I'd be happy to. You've done a good job these last 5 months. Cheers, Simon. --Stfg (talk) 16:48, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, Simon, but I wouldn't mind stepping aside if BDD wants to stay on (if he doesn't, I'll gratefully accept your nomination :-)). I squeaked through that RfA in February, and am busy learning the mop. Speaking of which, though, have you ever considered an RfA? You'd be an excellent choice but I have to tell you ahead of time, it's a rough week; AGF goes right out the window. All the best, Anne Miniapolis 16:58, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for asking that (you're the first to). I considered considering it, so to speak, a little while ago, and decided it's not for me. I could probably stand hell week, but adminship doesn't attract me at all. The work looks like chores, there are many areas of adminship I know nothing about (such as all the drama boards and your specialty, RFPP) and I actually rather enjoy having to make my way without any special powers, just getting it right or getting overruled. Maybe in the next reincarnation but three :) Sincerely, thanks for asking. Simon --Stfg (talk) 17:09, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
I don't blame you and you're right, it's grunt work (actually, what I've been doing lately is helping with the requested-moves backlog—learning to read consensus well enough to eventually start closing AfDs) and I never realized how much good you can do without the mop :-). Let me know, though, if you change your mind. All the best, Anne Miniapolis 17:34, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
As a thankyou for being so nice to me, I see that an IP has requested about 150 articles about Hurling Championships to bhe moved to titles that are redlinks. Because they are redlinks, I suppose non-admins can perform such moves, can't we? Do you approve of the proposals, and would you like me to? --Stfg (talk) 17:45, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
I presume this is on the RM page and yes, that would be a big help. You're right; an admin is only needed if the target is a redirect page. Just read through the discussion, or people will scream at you on your talk page :-). Have fun and all the best, Miniapolis 17:51, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
Yes, they are at WP:RM#Technical requests. There's no discussion and they look non-controversial to me, it's just that an IP wants them and can't do them. Please could you just take a look and give me the OK, as I don't want to create 150 blunders that I can't undo. --Stfg (talk) 17:57, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
Not to worry, I've done some checking and am OK to do it. --Stfg (talk) 18:48, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, we were visiting our younger son and his family (the grandkids ran us ragged at the playground). Glad you have the good sense not to rely on me :-). All the best, Miniapolis 23:36, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Glad you have the good sense to go and get run ragged by the grandkids! :)) --Stfg (talk) 23:44, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Two supported "Steel Magnolia EP"; why did some titles in category:Debut EPs omit parentheses? Is this a supervote? --George Ho (talk) 01:08, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Consensus is not a vote count, and WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS does not trump the naming convention I cited in my explanation when closing the discussion. Did you read the guideline? If so and still feel the need, move review is thataway. Miniapolis 03:08, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
And in rereading your description of the cover in the RM, the intended title could have as easily been EP :-). Miniapolis 03:11, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Reconsider "autonomous car" move?

In the autonomous car requested move discussion, after Marcus Qwertyus' change of heart, there were 8 in support, 4 opposed. (Marcus crossed out his support but then turned around again after further discussion and said he not only supported "driverless car" but was ready to move the article himself, until I told him to wait for an outside moderator.) One of the opposition votes was based on the idea that "driverless car" is more common only because people are uneducated and news articles are fluff and therefore commonality is irrelevant. Another opposition was based on the idea that "driverless car" wasn't more common, which, even in opponents' estimation, wasn't the case. A third pointed to one example of "autonomous" being used. And the fourth pointed to the fact that in earlier times, "driverless" meant a car was moving out of control, although that sense isn't in use today. Interesting as these arguments are, I don't think any of them are strong applications of the article title policy. In contrast, all of the arguments in support were based on "driverless car" being more common, precise and accurate, per the article title policy. Given that "consensus" on Wikipedia "does not mean unanimity" or "the result of a vote," but rather an incorporation of editors' legitimate concerns that respect Wikipedia's norms, I actually think there was a consensus for "driverless car." Also, there was no formal motion for the less-common "self-driving car," and the guy who proposed multiple articles, Marcus, was the one who turned around and was ready to move the article himself. Anyway, I'm asking for your reconsideration because the move review page points out it's quicker to resolve it with you, and because a move review just sounds like a big drawn-out mess. What are your thoughts? Pdxuser (talk) 16:50, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

In rereading the discussion, I don't see the consensus you do; I have a feeling that if I move the page, an opponent will ask me here to move it back. You're free to take this to move review, if you feel strongly enough, but I suggest waiting a few months and proposing the move again. By then, a clear consensus may emerge; lacking that, it would probably be unwise to move the page. All the best, Miniapolis 17:08, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for your review at the article Nea Salamis Famagusta FC. First let me tell you that my english are not so good. I will make some comments and i want your opinion on how we can write them correct.

  1. It has played in more than 50 Cypriot First Division championship games, ranking it seventh in that league category. Its wrong. I means it has participate in more tha 50 seasons at Cypriot First Division and its in 7th place in this table. See Cypriot First Division#Participations per club. (Strike-throughs are fixed.)
  2. Due to the existing restrictions, they envisioned a club which would appeal to everyone in Famagusta We must write that Due to the existing restrictions, they envisioned a club which would appeal to everyone in Famagusta and be separated from politics. Stay away from politics.
  3. Reacting to the banning of Nea Salamis from the Pancyprian Games... I preffer to use the phrase As a reaction to the fact that athletes of Nea Salamis were not involved in the Pancyprian Games,...
  4. the APOEL F.C. sent greetings by telegram to SEGAS ("cordial brotherly greetings to the entire Greek youth athletes") on the occasion of the national games, supporting an end to internecine strife. Left-wing members and athletes from the APOEL distanced themselves from the statement Previous phrase was APOEL F.C. sent a greeting by telegram to SEGAS ("cordial brotherly greetings to the entire Greek youth athletes"), on the occasion of National Games, and wished the cease of inner-nation mutiny. Leftist members and athletes of APOEL considered "inner-nation mutiny" as a challenge and political statement of the club, thus they distanced themselves from that statement. I think your prhase dont give the right facts.
  5. CFA officials were initially hostile towards consolidation supporters I means the manages (coaches) of the teams that participate in CFA's championships, not the board of CFA
  6. what a sportsmanlike affair means?
No misconduct by players or spectators.
  7. In 1953 (after the unification of football federations), the stadium was named GSE Stadium No. There are 2 stadium: The Famagusta municipal stadium and GSE stadium. Nea Salamina build the first at 1952 and use it as home ground the season 1952-1953 playing in Cyprus Amateur Football Federation championship. They couldnt use GSE stadium as i noticed later in the article. In 1953, after the unification of Cypriot football, they could use GSE stadium, so the city's Municipal Stadium was used only by the team for training until 1974.
  8. In 1974, when Famagusta by occupied by the Turkish army after its invasion of Cyprus, the club was forced to move its headquarters. Something is wrong here.
  9. In the 1953–54 Cypriot Cup, the club reached the semifinals as leader of the second division.[30][31][32] This achievement was matched at the 2005–06 Cypriot Cup. No as a leader. Only as a second division team. It was the first team playing in second division that reached to the semifinals of the Cypriot Cup. This happens again in 2005-06 with AEP Paphos.
  10. The next season the club led the second division, ensured its promotion. The league now had three groups, with Nea Salamis in the Larnaca-Famagusta group. With the conquest of the first position in the group, fought for the promotion of the first of the other two groups, the champion group Limassol-Paphos (Antaeus Lemesos) and Nicosia (Orpheus). The next season second division had three groups (three different championships) and not two as previous season. The "champion" of each group (3 teams) play together in a small championships of three teams. The first team at the end get the promotion to first division.
  11. Nea Salamina finished in first place.<ref name=1954-55>{{harvnb|Stilianou|Neofitou|1988|p=45}}</ref> During the same period, in the [[1954–55 Cyprus Cup]], excluded from subsequent phases one of the strongest teams of the season, APOEL with 3–2 win in GSE stadium.<ref name=1954-55>{{harvnb|Stilianou|Neofitou|1988|p=47}}</ref><ref>{{harvnb|Gavreilides|Papamoiseos|2001|p=63}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.rsssf.com/tablesc/cypcuphistfull.html#55 |title=1954/55 |accessdate=2012-08-02 |date=2 September 2010 |publisher=RSSSF }}</ref><!--Again unclear.--> It means that Nea Salamis, playing at second division, exclude APOEL (one of the strongest teams of first division), at the cup. After 57 years, in 2001–02 Cyprus Cup, after struggling in the second division, its repeated this success again excluding the later champion APOEL F.C. away 1–0, GSP Stadium.
  12. The 1960–61 championship was won by a team primarily composed of reserve players,[1] who were warmly embraced by the fans.[1] I means that the reserved team of Nea Salamis (not the main team) won the championship of the reserved teams. Not the championship of firt division. It was a significant fact that period.
  13. The team contended for the championship until the last game of the season, losing its first cup final. Correct: The team contended for the championship until the last game of the season AND lose its first cup final. Its 2 different tournaments.
  14. Two youth teams were founded, in Larnaca and Limassol. Two youth academies maybe.
  15. Nea Salamina played at the Alki grounds No. The previous phrase was Nea Salamina housed temporarily at the house of Alki I mean the office of the team. The ground was GSZ as i write at next paragraph.
  16. they decided to participate so the team could remain in the Cypriot First Division AND TO STAY ALIVE. We must write that phrase.
  17. Although it had 10 victories, Nea Salamina was relegated amid rumors of match-fixing. I means that the team complains that other teams fix matches. Is that the meaning of your phrase?
  18. The agreement was canceled due to new regulations prohibiting foreign employees.[57] No. The agreement was canceled because it was impossible for a foreigner coach to be employed by a refugge team, due financial problems cause by refuges.
  19. The 1990s were the football club's most successful decade. In addition to its championship wins the club acquired Ammochostos Stadium in Larnaca, built by volunteer supporters. I prefer previous phrase: The decade 1990–1999 was the most successful in the history of the football department. Apart from winning the cup, shield and participation in the Cup Winners Cup, claimed the championship. An important event is the acquisition of freehold office in 1991, the Ammochostos Stadium in Larnaca, the construction of which was achieved by volunteer supporters of the club. The team claimed the championship, not winning the championship.
  20. Nea Salamis won the 1992–93 Cypriot First Division championship. No. Nea Salamis claimed the championship again, not winning it.
  21. While Nea Salamis won and Digenis was already relegated No. Digenis was already relegated from previous mathces. I suggest: Nea Salamina won easily already relegated Digenis, but Doxa also won Apollo and Ethnikos Achna draw with Enosis Neon Paralimni FC.
  22. The team lost the Cyprus Cup final on 12 May 2012 (after defeating APOEL in the semifinals)[97][98] to Apollo 1–0 at GSP Stadium,[99] the first team in Cypriot football to be relegated despite playing in a cup final. I think we must write ...to Apollo 1–0 at GSP Stadium, becoming the first team in Cypriot football playing in a cup final despite to be relegated.
  23. After a difficult season in 2008–09 Nea Salamis returned to first division, defeating Olympiacos in the final game to win promotion The point is that, it that game if Olympiacos win od the game end draw Olympiakos will promote and Nea Salamina no. So i had wroten After a difficult championship in the 2008–09 Cypriot Second Division, returned to first division, winning in the final game Olympiacos and the promotion, leaving the opponent in the second division.
  24. About 2,500 fans sat together in the stands, and the match was attended by political leaders local sports authorities and representatives of the Church of Cyprus.[119] Why not 2500 fans attended the match who sat together in the stands sending a message of peace. The football match was attended by representatives of the political leadership of both communities, local and sports authorities and the Church.

Thanks again for your help! I really look forward for your repsonse.! Xaris333 (talk) 14:33, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

Glad to help (and your English is much better than my Greek :-)). As a copyeditor, I did my best to rewrite the article in English; in some places I had to guess your meaning, because the prose was impossible to understand. I think featured article is too high to aim for as the article is now (actually, its C-class assessment is pretty accurate but I don't think it's that far from B-class, although WP:Peer review can judge that better than I can). I think the article is a bit too detailed and while I tried to neutralize the Greek-Cypriot POV, it's still there (the unsourced "message of peace" phrase above, which I removed to restore NPOV, is an example of that). I suggest peer review and WP:GAN as your next steps before renominating for FA, and I'll tweak the prose as you've suggested as I have time (I'm copyediting another article now). All the best, Miniapolis 16:38, 15 June 2013 (UTC)
I've made some of the changes you've suggested, but you need someone fluent in English and familiar with Cypriot football for the rest; I don't think you realize how much time and effort I've put into this article already. One more thing: I think the gallery has too many pictures of fans. Six of the best pictures (instead of the twelve there now) would be enough. All the best, Miniapolis 22:41, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

I am really thankful about your contributions to the article! I could make the changes by my own but i preffered your oponion about it. Ok, maybe is better to try to change. Thanks again!! Xaris333 (talk) 15:34, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

I made the changes. [1] If you had time read them and tell me if are ok. Xaris333 (talk) 16:08, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

Copyedit

Hello, can you please copyedit Jab Tak Hai Jaan? I requested for copyedit on April 29 but no one responded. Reply me in my talk page. Thanks ----Plea$ant 1623 12:21, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

A Morbid Taste for Bones

Your edits were fine. Question: why did you shorten the summary to less than 800 words then add a note saying the Plot summary was too long? I think it is the shortest summary for any of the entries for the 20 novels in the Cadfael Chronicles series. If you cannot get it short enough for your own standards, who will do that? Here is hoping it stays as short as it is.

Second question: What is the meaning and/or purpose of the Anchor notation in the section title for the Plot summary?

Thanks. Prairieplant (talk) 08:12, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

It's not "my standards"; length, I guess, is in the eye of the beholder and to me the "summaries" are still too detailed. The guideline for plot summaries is 700 words maximum (or 3–4 paragraphs for novels), but I didn't have time to cut it down any lower. Another editor tagged the plot summary for length; I just came across the tag, noticed the plot summary was over 1,000 words of near-proseline (very short paragraphs) and did what I could. The {{Anchor}} template is used when a section title is changed, so existing links from other articles still work. I enjoy the Cadfael novels immensely, but WP articles shouldn't look like fansites. All the best, Miniapolis 14:47, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

So Plot summary is not a title you like (or wikipedia no longer likes?), and thanks for explaining what Anchor means. Trying to shorten the summaries is a challenge because others come in to add the text back, one challenge. And get into arguments about it, a true waste of time. One sentence paragraphs were the result of prior cuts (previously a very long paragraph), and my notion of one topic in a paragraph. I enjoy those books immensely, too. I was glad that you put in the effort to do take out words, and did not simply leave the tag, as many others have done. Prairieplant (talk) 22:15, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

I prefer "plot" to "plot summary"; the latter seems a bit redundant, especially when the "summaries" are long, and the Manual of Style recommends summary style without extraneous words. Yes, edit-warring is a waste of time and I try to just move on when my edits are reverted; it helps not to take it personally, but that's not always easy :-). All the best, Miniapolis 01:29, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
One small point to consider with the section title plot versus plot summary is finding the Wikipedia entry using google. Usually I type the book title and Ellis Peters, and the Wikipedia entry comes up in the first few entries on the list. For some, however, I must add plot summary to the search key for the Wikipedia entry for the book to show up on the first page of results, keying on the word summary as far as I can tell. I am no expert at all on search keys, but I did find this peculiarity as I worked my through the series. I realize that might not bear on your preference, but it is a consideration in making the entries easy to find. I prefer plot summary over plot as the section title for that reason, and because I did make an effort to get all the books to have some standard aspects in their Wikipedia entries. Not a major goal, but a way to see if all the sections are present, along with references. I know your Anchor notation will keep the plot summary linked within Wikipedia even if shortened to Plot, but it does not affect external searches, does it? Prairieplant (talk) 10:07, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
The Google-search glitches may have to do with particular titles. I have no strong preference either way (although as a copyeditor, I default to succinctness; to me, the word "summary" is redundant :-)), so do what you want. All the best, Miniapolis 13:29, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

WP:GOCE June 2013 blitz award

The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
For tirelessly copy editing more than 10,000 words during the Guild of Copy Editors June 2013 blitz, please accept this award along with the Guild's appreciation. —Torchiest talkedits 22:39, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

On a more personal note, thanks so much for accepting the coordinator position for the first half of this year. You did a great job, and though I know you're a lot busier than you were six months ago, I hope we'll still see you around. I think you're doing quite well with your new responsibilities. Finally, if possible, can you give out awards for the last five minors on the barnstar page? That would be everyone from my name down if you order by grand total. Thanks again! —Torchiest talkedits 22:39, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

Many thanks for the kind words, and I'll be glad to give out those five minors ASAP. I'll definitely stick around; copyediting is what I enjoy the most here (oddly, I find it relaxing :-)), and I now know more about managing the behind-the-scenes stuff. You have good coordinators coming in. All the best, Miniapolis 23:47, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi Miniapolis,

I came here to tell you that I have reopened the move discussion you closed at Talk:SMART criteria#Requested move. I think getting the opinion of others would help. Also, the sole opposer has not responded to my comment. I have left messages in a few places asking people to comment (on talk pages of editors of the page and on the business WikiProject). I probably should have done that before. (I recall that the guidelines used to recommend that but I couldn't find anything recommending it now. Maybe I am thinking of a different kind of discussion.)

I left a message on the talk page explaining some of this but BDD seems to think this is some kind of personal attack by me on you so I thought I should come here and explain what I have done and reassure you that it was not intended to be an attack on your ability as an admin or anything else.

Yaris678 (talk) 23:11, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

It's not an "attack," but you are completely ignoring the RM process. You can't just turn around and overrule a closing administrator because you don't like the decision she came to. The discussion was closed. What part of "Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section" did you not understand? --BDD (talk) 23:32, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
I have given my reasons for reopening the discussion. You haven't addressed those. First you accuse me of being disrespectful and disruptive. Now you present me with an argument based on process. Process can be very helpful but Wikipedia is not a bureaucracy. If we go outside the process it obviously helps if we explain what we are doing and why in a civil way. That's what I thought I was doing. But you obviously disagree. Yaris678 (talk) 23:54, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
Um. I see no evidence of a reopened discussion—not at Talk:SMART criteria, WP:RM or WP:Move review (which is where you should go, if you're unhappy with the decision). I stand by my close; there was no consensus to move the page, pure and simple. You yourself said "I don't feel strongly about this", so I don't know what's going on. Miniapolis 00:25, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
Check the page history. Yaris reopened, I reverted, and we repeated the process again. Yaris, I may have misread your intentions, but if that is the case, please note that your actions easily led themselves to such. There's a reason we have warning templates for people who remove templates like {{afd}}. We're not a bureaucracy, but process is important. If you're new to RMs, I don't mean to WP:BITE. But there's really no case where it's appropriate for an involved editor to reopen a closed discussion. Create a new section, reach out to the closing administrator, or even to another involved editor. That's all fine and good. Overriding the decision of the closing admin is not. Now, I'm sure this was a good faith error. You wouldn't have contacted me at all if you were intending to subvert the process. Miniapolis, would you be ok with relisting the discussion? Yaris, could you agree to that, and to abide by the final decision? --BDD (talk) 02:07, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
It's okay with me, but I don't think it's necessary and (more to the point :-)) I don't know how to do it; RM discussions, I believe, are removed from the backlog by a bot shortly after they're hatted. I posted an explanation on Yaris' talk page. Miniapolis 02:16, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
  • Relisting is easy. Just add <small>''Relisted''. ~~~~</small> right before the nominator's initial signature, and the RM bot will list it with that day's discussions instead of where it was before. (Relisting comments are best done as a line in the discussion itself, however. I'm not sure exactly how this works, but the RM bot frequently doesn't understand if there's more than "Relisted" added in the nomination.) --BDD (talk) 20:34, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Minefields in Croatia

Hi! Thank you for taking time and effort to copyedit Minefields in Croatia article. I took a look at your edits so far and have no objections. Except, I'm wondering if there was a specific reason to change the "mine awareness" to "mine warning" in the billboard photo caption. The billboard poster is not an actual landmine warning device, but a part of an advertising campaign to raise funds for demining. Such campaigns are take place regularly in Croatia (as in this example where mine awareness ad posters are seen in context of urban settings). I'm concerned that readers might get an (incorrect) idea that billboard posters are used to indicate minefields. The image captioned as "Standard minefield sign" depicts the only design of the mine warning signs in use in Croatia right now.--Tomobe03 (talk) 22:32, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the clarification; I had confused the actual minefield-warning signs with the public-awareness campaign. I've tweaked the caption; please feel free to change it (or let me know if I still don't have it right :-)). It's a very good article, and I'm copyediting the last section. All the best, Miniapolis 22:39, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi, with your help in CE, Tirunelveli passed GA. Thanks a lot. Ssriram mt (talk) 00:27, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
Congratulations! (I had only a very small part in it.) Thanks for letting me know (and for the barnstar). All the best, Miniapolis 00:47, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi ... I'm curious why you think Carlyle Restaurant is stub size. Thanks.--Epeefleche (talk) 18:27, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Many editors (myself included) use 250 words as the upper limit for a stub. It's a judgment call, so please feel free to remove the tag if you disagree; I'm just pitching in on the huge WikiProject Food and drink unassessed-article backlog. All the best, Miniapolis 19:25, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

A little help

Hey Miniapolis! I hope you're having a great time :) I come here to you again to request your magnificent copyediting skills in Metamorfosis World Tour. I really need help there, or otherwise the whole featured topic will be demoted because of it :( as I have my time reduced a bit and I'm not as good as you, I humbly come to you, as always :) Thanks! — ΛΧΣ21 15:13, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Good hearing from you again; I'll get to it ASAP. All the best, Miniapolis 18:00, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
OMG Thank you :) I'm fine. I took a lengthy wikibreak after my last RfA. Now I'm going back to business, :) I hope you're doing good too. How's everything going? — ΛΧΣ21 20:32, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
Good here, thanks, just busy on- and off-wiki. Nice to have you back, and I should finish the copyedit this evening (I'll let you know when I do, of course :-)). All the best, Miniapolis 20:53, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
Good. I've been busy too, though I've gained much time again to be back. Thank you for the copyedit, it means a lot to me :) — ΛΧΣ21 21:03, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
Glad to help, my friend! All the best, Miniapolis 22:24, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
