Wikipedia Biography Summer Assessment

Can you please leave a fancy message on my userpage about this, and I will make a banner for this? Thanks. Miranda 23:56, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject Biography Summer 2007 Assessment Drive!

WikiProject Biography is holding a three month long assessment drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unassessed articles. The drive is running from June 4, 2007 – September 4, 2007.

Awards to be won range from delicacies such as the WikiCookie to the great Golden Wiki Award.
There are over 110,000 articles to assess so please visit the drive's page and help out!

This drive was conceived of and organized by Psychless with the help of Ozgod. Regards, Psychless Type words!.

There is a banner, at least I think this is a banner. The person responsible for putting this banner on members #201+ didn't put it on yours I guess.

Hope this helps. --Psychless Type words! 00:43, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Made a banner for this, hope you like. Miranda 06:16, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for ignoring you

Hi, if you're also Real96 on IRC, sorry for ignoring you. I was looking at Wikipedia:IRC channels and clicked on #wikipedia, and found myself looking at several lines of meaningless conversation. Then you said hi, but I didn't know how to answer, so I looked for another few minutes, and tried to click things, and then exited the programme.

It's too complicated! ElinorD (talk) 12:40, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

How exactly was my editing of The Bill vandalism or in any way unconstructive? I simply did not agree with the new formatting, as I'm sure many regular users will agree, and reverted it back to the origonal edit. My edit did not contain any inappropriate or incorrect information, contained more information than the version I changed, and does not have sufficient grounds for blocking of an IP address. - — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.71.192.107 (talkcontribs)

Advertisment

Hi there, I'm the !bot who ran into you on IRC. Just reiterating that I like the idea of running a template ad about WP:LGBT. What would the main purpose for the ad be--to attract more members, to promote activities within the project etc.?--Xnuala (talk)(Review) 04:12, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Mainly the ads are to promote the project and get more members involved. I will leave a message on the talk page of the project to see what their ideas are. I have to be careful with this ad, because WP:LBGT may be controversial to some users. Miranda 04:22, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Are there any precedents set with controversial ads? I remember hearing something about some sort of incident but my memory is slightly fuzzy. If the ad is written in a neutral tone I feel that it would be appropriate.--Xnuala (talk)(Review) 04:29, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Guts & Bolts

Hi there, I was looking at the article for The History Channel and corrected a date for a show called Guts & Bolts. I noticed that there was no article for this show and was about to look into how to create one, but then I thought that I may not be the best person to do this as I had something to do with that program and, thus, may not be able to be completely neutral. You seem to be a trustworthy person to ask, so, here I am asking if I should write something up or not.AleBrewer 01:01, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Sure, if the show exists, is notable as well. Also, the article must have reliable sources. - Miranda 01:04, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
As notable as most series, IMHO; there just seems to be a lot of red that could be fleshed out. Thank you - I started off here on the wrong foot and didn't want to take another misstep! AleBrewer 01:24, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
You can make your own sandbox, shown here, User:AleBrewer/sandbox, to help you save your changes to the article. Miranda 01:59, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Hey there Real - this is Faethe (Rhonda). I am leaving a message so I know how to get hold of you again! Thank you!Faethe 22:39, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

No problem. Miranda 22:51, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Hey there - Miranda - someone is going about defacing my page with stuff here on wikipedia.

This is really nuts :( I am writing this article and trying to be very careful about my sources. I will post it here unedited so you can tell me your opinion. Thank you!Faethe 01:42, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

I have taken care of this incident with your userpage. Go ahead and write the article, and post it here on my user talk, and I can see what I can do. Miranda 03:37, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for getting me straight again :) Just another note: Here is a link to another article pertaining to some of the practices on Fark that is scheduled for deletion:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Shadowban

The admin in this case is also a user at fark.com

No, I'm not. Used to be a top 40 submitter, ~170 links or so, but that's long since been superseded, and I rarely visit nowadays. I'm just interested in seeing material added here be notable and verifiable. --Steve (Stephen) talk 03:12, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

I don;t know if that is a conflict of interest or not.

I will finish up with the article tomorrow :)

Rhonda - — Preceding unsigned comment added by Faethe (talkcontribs)

Will look at the AFD soon. Just get back to me tomorrow. I guess, since you are a former member of Fark, that wouldn't be a conflict of interest. Miranda 04:22, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
The page will probably get deleted because of original research and not having reliable sources. Unless there are reliable sources in the article and in your commentary, the article would probably stay deleted. Miranda 04:36, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Hey Miranda - I have been ooking into this and do have an outside source which is willing to publish an article on this - p2pnet.net. At this point I am still compiling stuff so it reads well. The best thing to do would be (I think) for me to post a criticism on the fark article then reference the shadowban article from there. The thing is both things are related, and they were related until someone changed the fark entry by deleting 'items in the fark filter'. Typing Bannination.com and posting this as a comment will result in the entry being shadowbanned - only visible to the user and not to the rest of the community. It's easy to test if you are a member of fark.com.

My profile is still up on fark but I no longer consider myself a member and will not post there again. If it helps me, I will delete it now. Thank you so much for your advice. I really don't know what I am doing. I am still typing, will hopefully have an outline with references by the end of the day. Thank you! RhondaFaethe 20:23, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi again Miranda! This is what I have worked up so far as a criticism:

Criticism

On April 25th 2007, at 5:00 PM EST Fark.com modified it's format which was met with mixed results. This was exacerbated by an Admin's remark insisting that users 'get over it' [8]. As a result, some users fled into or started other communities [27]. The most commonly reasons stated for this were:

1. Users felt alienated by the new design [9] and the change in posting rules [11].

2. Users felt alienated by the increased level of moderation..

An example of one individual who was banned as a result of this increased level of moderation is former fark user, mytwocents [28], who was banned and subsequently had her blog's [29] ip address blocked by Fark for reasons that were never made clear. Many other users that either criticized or started new sites [27] that featured criticism of Fark were also subsequently banned.

Like most public forums, Fark has the means to suspend a user's account [30] should circumstances warrant it. One form of banning is the "shadow ban" [31] . There is no official term for this form of banning. It is not mentioned anywhere in Fark's FAQ [32]. Evidence of this has been collected through screencaps and user testimony [33]. When an account has been shadow banned, any posts submitted by the user are invisible to the rest of the community. Only the banned user can see their own posts. Because the user can see their own postings appear in a thread, the user continues to post under the assumption that his or her posts are visible. The shadow banned user is not informed that he/she has been banned from Fark and may continue to post for months before finding out [33].

Examples of Fark's undisclosed site management techniques have been documented as far back as 2004 [34]. A Fark sales rep solicited “highly placed links to his sites in return for several hundred dollars” [34] to Jason Calacanis [35] “publisher of several rival Weblogs, Inc. blogs” [34]. According to a statement on Calacanis' weblog he felt he would “never trust Fark again” [36]. After the incident was reported on Wired News [34], Calacanis noted on his blog that users on Fark who posted concerns about Fark's representatives tactics had their accounts “turned off” [37].

I also posted this on my talk page. Some of the earlier footnotes were based on what was posted in the original fark article which has since been altered by someone so I will have to redo them. The part of about users feeling alienated was deleted yesterday, as well as most of the text on the fark article about 'fark redesign'. Thank you! RhondaFaethe 01:57, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

I am unsure about this. You might want to ask on the Fark.com website. However, with these links, you are using some neutral and unneutral POV and some unreliable sources. The best thing is to post this on the talk page of the article to see what others think. Miranda 21:19, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
I will look at this tomorrow, but you need to contact Alison first of your proposal. Miranda 01:56, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Hey Alison - I went ahead and edited the Shadowban page to reflect more sources. This was my entry in case it gets vandalized by tommorow:

The weird-news-aggregation community website Fark employs the practice; community backlash against this and other practices by administrators and/or moderators spawned the creation of a similar website called banniNation, which attempts to avoid such methods.

Another way to shadow ban someone is to use the Global ignore feature included with vBulletin community forum software. According to vBulletin's website, "This feature Global ignore user aka 'Tachy goes to Coventry' - when enabled all posts by the specified user will be ignored/unseen by other members. Automatically added to the all users ignore lists." [1] . vBulletin forum administrators use Global ignore to hide posts from disruptive users who may otherwise react publicly to being banned, or create legal issues for other users of the website. An example of this is found on The Admin Zone[2]. In response to a question concerning the moderation of a user creating legal issues for an animal care forum, an administrator posted "My 2 cents: Disable her account or put her on global ignore. To me the issue isn't this kid, but your community. Is this the best thing for your community letting her posts, her story, her odd status...take over your community that you spend so much time and effort keeping up and running and civil?"[3].

Discussions concerning the Global ignore feature in vBulletin go back as far as August of 2000[4]. The use of this feature was viewed as a way to alienate a user from the rest of the community by causing the least amount of disruption. In a forum post, vBullletin member Sharg states that “Global ingore is really great. Even if you want to keep your database out of trash wluke. Cause by time the ingored user will get sick of posting and being ignored by eveybody so he will simply leave the board then once he leave you can delete all his posts.”[5].

On WebmasterWorld[6] on January 3, 2006 a discussion thread was started concerning the Washington Post turning off comments during an ongoing discussion. Forum member HughMungus offered this advice on Global ignore:

...instead of deleting accounts or banning people, you trick the bad apples such that they think they can still post and they see their posts with everybody else's posts, but in fact they're the only ones who can see their posts.[7]

When applied to public forums, Global ignore is used as a tool to moderate discussions by 'shadowing' disruptive users. In the case of Fark, 'shadowbanning' has been used to mask contributory comments due to their content[8]. It has also been applied to members of the subscription service Totalfark without their knowledge[9]. This would appear to conflict with a members expectation of open participation in “TotalFark discussions,” which are submitted links not meant to be greenlighted, but rather commented on and discussed by TotalFark members only”. [10]

Faethe 05:02, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

This should not be included because it has content from message boards, which are unreliable sources. Miranda 21:19, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Which one? Also - this is a forum related issue. I think it would qualify under the wikiproject internet culture? The sources I quote with the shadowban article vBulletin is based on a software packages inclusion of a feature that enables moderators to mask user comments without the users knowlege. The quotes I gathered go towards the reasoning administrators and users have for employing Global ignore. There are alo multiple instances of the term 'shadowban' used in other communities which I also intend to include.

In the case of fark - I'm not quoting any forums. That's a wired news article being sites in that, as well as the subject of the article. Ratf"ckers page is a compilation of screencaps and testimony from former users of fark who have had various forms of moderation leveled at them. An article is also being published over at p2pnet.net concerning this. That's an independent publication that does not have ties to any of the parties mentioned. Alison has not gotten back to me yet, either. Faethe 02:39, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Okay, Faethe, just leave a message on the article's talk page since Fark.com is a controversial article to some. But, to me, some of the sources that you are using are not reliable. Miranda 23:45, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Thank you :) Thank you for the criticism, too. I will go back over it again before I do that for sure -Faethe 13:29, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

So I haven't this article on e.g. Brasilian (dialect of Portuguese), Jamtlandic, Hawaiian, Bengal, Tibetan, Chichewa, Shona, Gilaki, Bishnupiya, Xhosa, Zulu, Rwanda, Fijian, Sotho, Singalese, Samoan, Khmer or Oromo. Full list on Polish is here. Pietras1988 TALK 08:18, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

AIV report

Hello :-) May I kindly ask why you recently reported 82.1.164.137 to AIV, the user stopped vandalising at 12:35 and you made the report approximately fifteen minutes ago after the vandal had long stopped, may I kindly ask why you reported them? Kindest Regards --The Sunshine Man 13:21, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

First, the user is blocked because of blatant vandalism. And, second I saw the article on my watchlist later, because I was doing something. Third, the IP vandalized 10 minutes after the prior vandalism, which warrants a block, because the user was actively vandalizing. Miranda 13:23, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes but if you look at their contribs they stopped vandalism at 12:35 and you reported them about 20 minutes ago, that is approaching two hours of non-vandalism. The Sunshine Man 13:29, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
I think something is wrong with your browser. Because, first 1.) The server's time is offset 1 hour behind due to UTC and Daylight Savings Time. 2.) When I reverted, the user vandalized again. I am assuming good faith, but please look at all of the evidence before asking questions concerning WP:AIV and reporting vandals. Thanks! Miranda 13:34, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
OK, I suppose he was vandalising, ever since the clocks changed its been really confusing with the times being different but I thought it appeared correct in the USA. Cheers --The Sunshine Man 13:38, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Medicine project banner

Thank you for your note on the Medicine Wikiproject's talk page. It'd be a great help for us as we always have to struggle to find more participants. This is the only and biggest problem of the whole medicine section in Wikipedia. So if you could create a banner, it'd be awesome.

My suggestions:

  • use the caduceus logo or something similar
  • blue color, similar to the color of the portal would be great as well

Thanks in advance! Ps: I loved this banner. :)

Etihad Airways Controversy

I'm amazed at you repeatedly reinstating the Controversy issue section in the Etihad airlines article every time its deleted, despite staing the reason why its removed, how is it relevant to the airline article in any manner? to any one with common sense that bit of information has absolutely nothing to do with the airline as a company directly, the whole idea of the Etihad Airways article on wikipedia is to post information about the airline as a company/business and keep updating it plus include occassional trivia such as first flight, new interiors, new services or whatever other developments take place in the company or if it does something unique business wise or something histortic, not incidents that place in dealing with passenegers or lost baggage or someone taking a leak in First class infront of everyone, what is the site heading to, Wikitabloid? the point I am making is that its just an incident that happened and is definitely not of any encyclopedia value, as I said it would have been different if the Controversy issue dealt with something of the airline related to its business strategy where it was harming the interests of other airlines where it would have been accused of getting unecessary state subsidies and offering cheap fares luring passenegers away from other carriers, or if it had orderd its crew to dress in Islamic clothing, or stopped hiring women or started serving pork on baord, but to discuss incidents related to drunken passengers, or lost luggage etc. in the main article by creating a section for it is plain stupid.

I ask you what next to add to article on wikipedia, pilot caught making out in toilet during flight with passenger? are these things worth any mention in an encylopedia, this incident cannot even be considered airline trivia to be worthy of being in an encylopedia, that bit of information is plain crap and to me it seems its been added with malicious intent by someone with a petty mind trying to make the airline appear at fault, however since its of no value being here and thats why its best deleted, and thats why I have been repatedly removing it.

Please note I keep using the word encyclopedia it might help ring a bell to remind you what an encyclopedia is supposed to be. Dont aim to become the online trailer trash version of the encyclopedia of the 21st century. Let it be what an encyclopedia is meant to be and as we have known it, just that now its online and editable by anyone, but dont be accepting to trash inputs due to some bias and keep reverting those edites if they have been removed with a logical explanation.

Ω§|Blacksmith2 08:14, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

The image is solely the ownership of EA Games and is copyrighted, rather you slash, scratch, crop, paste, render, paint it, black it out, etc. This means, 1.) You can not use this image on your userpage 2.) You cannot upload modified copyrighted images, and claim them as your own to release it to the public domain. This is known as a copyright violation, and can warrant a block. The Wikimedia Foundation can get sued by EA Sports for modifying a copyrighted image, a risk that many editors such as myself aren't willing to take. Also, I contributed to that discussion and provided links as well to EA Sport. Cheers. Miranda 08:28, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Miranda, I think your response above is verging on WP:BITE...Anyways, I stand by the advice I gave Blacksmith and will continue to defend it. nadav (talk) 08:31, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Nope, it is following the rules. I am posting this on WP:ANI. Miranda 08:32, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
ANI? Has there been vandalism? This just a question we can reason out, no? nadav (talk) 08:35, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

(reduce indent) The administrator's noticeboard is not only for vandalism, but is for other issues as well. Miranda 08:37, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

I know that, but I am trying to understand why you think this needs urgent administrator involvement. If you really think so then please do. But I am surprised. nadav (talk) 08:39, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Ok can i upload temporary blank images to replace the current ones, and create my owns, images to the effect of the current ones, mainly being either just stylish text or an image of my own creation and delete the speedy deletion pieces?Ω§|Blacksmith2 08:40, 11 June 2007 (UTC) p.s thank you for your conflict edit! oh another edit conflict! and again!
First, the best thing to do is wait for an administrator to delete the image. Second, make/create an image, as long as this is not copyrighted by any company separately of the copyrighted image. I am posting on ANI about deleting the image, which answers Nadav1's question above. Miranda 08:43, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

can i second the deletion, have triedf to replace them, ended up distorting them.wait no , its blanked the ones i did,Ω§|Blacksmith2 08:57, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Sure, I am making a thread on ANI, now. Miranda 09:07, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
I hope you saw my suggestion?[1] Also, I am confused by your edit summary..Is the "!" a negation sign, or does it mean I'm doubly a troll? nadav (talk) 09:25, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
First, I started a thread on WP:ANI about the incident, shown here.
Second, I hit the enter button by accident. I meant, "respond to user" instead of troll, because I was thinking of something else at the time. And, third, yes != -. Miranda 09:39, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

No, it's a copyrighted image of a game. Linking is okay, but copyrighted images cannot be allowed in userspace. Only free use images can. Miranda 09:54, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

well the question is.../ is a link allowed!!!٧|Blacksmith2 10:03, 11 June 2007 (UTC) sorry tired٧|Blacksmith2 10:07, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

does wikipedia allowow direct streaming from sites like photobucket?Ω§|Blacksmith2 04:58, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Oof

I just chastised a user for posting at ANI that a category move not being completed right away wasn't an "incident". I hadn't realized you told him to do so. Whoops. -N 19:53, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, the user used a help me, and rather than telling him to go ahead and move the category without the consensus of other editors on the project, without just telling him to move the page. Also, the user wanted administrator attention. Miranda 20:05, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Article "Adriana de Barros"

You mentioned that the article of "Adriana de Barros", may fail notability. I've read the guidelines various times to correct the article, rewrote it. The article was tested before publication, and rated as "start class". What can be done to improve the article, notability related? What I do not understand about Wikipedia, is that there are numerous stubs and lack of reference articles online (some I've tried to fix)...if they sit untouched they are not deleted as they're not as noticeable. I've worked on this article for some time to improve it, and once approved now it is ready to be deleted once I ask a question on content division/how to improve it. Any advice on how to write articles for Wikipedia is appreciated. I've read many guidelines over time, have tried to work towards requirements. Find all the work put into writing this quite displeasing, especially once someone rates it and another ready to throw it away. Breathe200 15:59, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

The article read like an advertisement and like a resume. I deleted information per the manual of style. Miranda 20:01, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

How can I improve the article? Any suggestions? I've read into manual style, and have made a few edits. Just not too clear what should be altered. Thanks. Breathe200 13:11, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/DrKiernan

Hi. I don't know if you've kept Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/DrKiernan on your watchlist but I just wanted to let you know that the candidate has expanded his introduction and replied to a number of his opposers which probably clarifies his intentions quite a bit. Since you opposed due to (as far as I understand) his statement that he would not be very active as an admin, I believe you might want to reconsider your stated opinion. Cheers, Pascal.Tesson 15:33, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

APA

I see how you can take my comments on the APA service/social discussion as being disruptive, but I would request that you issue the same admonishment to Ccson as well, being that he is adamantly refusing to allow it to be classified as anything but service. Your note is being heeded, and I probably do need to back off a bit and let things cool since it's clear to me that the other editor is refusing to back down either.

Do realize that it is just a little offensive to call out one person on the discussion for "disruptive" but not the other equally disruptive person. (please feel free to delete this thread after you're done, I don't wish for it to mar your talk page, but I have no other way of communicating this to you). Justinm1978 02:04, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

In addition to other articles, specifically NPHC organizations, you have reverted "service" organizations to disruptive without discussing the topic out on the articles' talk pages, first. My suggestion to you is to avoid the conflict and edit other articles. Miranda 02:16, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
I also went through NPC, NIC, NMGC, NALFO, and CIPFI lists and corrected all those who are not exempt from Title IX, so don't think that I am singling out the NPHC in my edits by any means. Note that except for a select few, none of those changes have been disputed, and even you agreed with the Title IX requirements on the other 8 NPHC groups mean they're not classified as service. Changes which are fact do not have to be discussed unless there is a disagreement, which there was on a few, and those were hashed out and agreed upon except for one. That one became deadlocked, to which I tried to bring in more opinions without risking Featured Article status. Everybody who cared to comment this week agrees except for one editor, who continues to disrupt by refusing to accept any change that is in conflict with his POV and interpretation of statements and sources. That's not right, nor is it WP:civil, and is just as disruptive, if not more, because it's interfering with the collaborative nature of Wikipedia. Your suggestion is noted and will be given due consideration, but your admonishment is still mildly offensive because it is not being applied equally. Justinm1978 02:44, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Alpha Phi Alpha will not loose it's FA status because of the Social/Service conflict. Also, please note that wikipedia is not a battleground. Please contribute to improving an article separate to the one which is being disputed in order for editors not to categorize you as a pointy editor. While, Ccson's involvement is kind of a conflict of interest, since he is a member of the frat (I don't know if he is active), you should think about the issue on his side. I would really hate for this issue to be a RFC, at worst an arbitration case. Miranda 03:17, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

First, read the instructions fully before leaving a note on this page. I was heavily thinking about removing this request from my talk page since you didn't follow the instructions. Second, talk the issues out on the article's talk page. Removing and vandalizing the page only to make a point will result in a block. Miranda 14:27, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for the lateness in this

Thanks for the banner! It must have gotten lost in my talk page... It's very nice. Except we changed it to June 1 - September 1... Anyways, if I could make another request. I'd like a banner that we could place in the awards section of our assessment drive page. Here's what I want on it, roughly:

So what awards can you win in the Summer 2007 Assessment Drive?

200 articles assessed - WikiThanks (with picture, picture should be included for every award)
500 - WikiCookie
1000 - Original Barnstar
2000 - Tireless Contributor Barnstar
3000 - The Working Man's Barnstar
4000 - The Barnstar of Diligence
5000 - The Barnstar of Diligence

(fancy effects for this part) The Amazing Biography Assesing Race!
This is a race to see who can assess the most articles during the drive!
1st - Golden WikiAward
2nd & 3rd - Silver WikiAward
4th, 5th, & 6th - Bronze WikiAward Start assessing so you can win all of these amazing awards!

That's about it. If you don't want to do it it's okay. --Psychless 18:42, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

For many reasons, I cannot do this project. First, I made a banner off of this information, which said fourth of June to the fourth of September. Second, the banner literally took me a full day to make. Third, projects are limited to one banner. So, in theory, making another banner for biography would be unfair to the rest of the projects. Fourth, the information is too much to put on one banner. The reader can get bored quite easily. If another banner is uploaded with this information in addition to my banner, then it will be deleted. Thank you. Miranda 00:16, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

Regarding blocking

Thanks Mirada, I understand the 3RR rule now. But request you to please review my edits. Do they qualify as spam? And if someone is deleting information, is the person deleting called a vandal or the person restoring it? Yes, but stand alone lists is not articles in the sense used in WP:MOS. And is not treated in WP:MOS, but rather in WP:SAL. Which neither answered my question, however some random browsing has lead me to believe that the standard I am looking for does not in fact exist. Taemyr 23:49, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Your question was kind of vague, that's why I redirected you to Manual of Style. However, ask on village pump with your problem precisely in the best way possible/with as much information as possible in order to receive an adequate response. Miranda 23:53, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Delta Sigma Theta Page

Miranda I changed the DST page back to read "the then social group" because this is what is in our history books (private and public history books). Some improvements you have made to the DST page have been really helpful, while a few other changes you are making are taking things out of context.

Miranda I saw your comment about the use of the DST crest. However, the DST crest has to be removed. Our crest has been trademarked and can only be used if authorization has been obtained. If you go to our National website on the internet guidelines page you will see it clearly indicated that it cannot be used in this instance. --Unsigned by HistoricDST

First, the crest will not be deleted because of the crest falling under fair use and protected under logo. It's not fair for DST's crest to be removed while the other fraternities and sororities have their trademarked crests on their pages. If you want to make this article a Good Article, then the crest has to be there. Second, since you did not provide any sources to AKA being "a social group", I have to put an unreferenced tag on the article, since the facts are not properly cited. Feel free to contact DST's national website, but as it applies to the standard greek FA, no crest, no GA or FA. Miranda 00:14, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
Also, please sign your messages with four tildes, or they will be ignored. Miranda 00:15, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

The crest has to be removed or proper permission has to be obtained to use it. The fair usage act applies to excerpts of scholarly works not trademarked symbols. Each D9 has their own guidelines on the appropriate use of their crest and other symbols. Members of DST cannot even put our crest on our webpages. Please review the DST website guidlines on the National website page. signed by HistoricDST 4.249.3.183 05:09, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

I hid the image. Thank you. Miranda 05:10, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. Maybe another DST symbol can be used. HistoricDST 05:12, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

No, sorry. The crest must be used. Ask for permission from your sorority to use it on the article, because I am busy trying to promote Alpha Kappa Alpha to featured. Miranda 05:16, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Here is just one of several reference that I will post soon that indicates that AKA in 1912 was a social group/organization. The following statement was written by Judge Quander who is a descent of Nellie Quander.

http://www.thequanderquality.com/nellie2.htm

"There was no Alpha Chapter in those days, just one group of mostly privileged women at Howard University, who had drawn up a ritual for induction, and sponsored several social affairs for their friends and invited guests. There was no incorporation, no thought of making the sorority a national or international service oriented organization, and little seriousness of purpose."

See also http://www.thequanderquality.com/nellie.htm HistoricDST 05:23, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

The website may not be a reliable source. However, I will check into it, soon. AKA being a "social group" in the early days should belong in the AKA article itself, specifically the early history. One area that you can work on is citing and referencing and expanding the founder members of your sorority. Miranda 05:33, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
Also, non free logos are protected under fair use. Miranda 06:06, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

First, I reverted your inquiry, because it's a formation of this. Second, I have moderately high standards of voting for administrators. Re: Image for Qxz ads.

From User talk:HiB2Bornot2B:

I would have appreciated if you brought this issue to me first before making your ad, as a common courtesy. I may make another version of this ad in order to conform to other state projects, such as Pennsylvania.

Miranda, you don't own the ad template, any more than I do. There's no requirement that the various ads match each other, and there's certainly no need for everything to be approved by you. Remember that this is a wiki; add to, modify or remove other people's work as you see fit, but don't hold them back from contributing.

In this case, the source image he used is in the public domain, so attribution is not required. It's encouraged, for convenience purposes, but he was doing nothing wrong by not including attribution; thus insisting you'll have to make another version of the ad, and berating him for not checking with you first is a bad idea. (Attribution is required when an image's license specifies it – as is the case with most Creative Commons licenses – but this is not the case with public domain images).

The image seems to me to be no more confusing or loud than some of your own – and if you don't like it, just edit it to be more subtle. Someone else can always revert your changes if they disagree with them – Gurchzilla 11:48, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Also, since when are ads for pages outside project space not allowed? The only reason we don't have any so far (other than one Portal and one Help page) is that nobody's asked for one. No reason someone can't make ads for something else Gurchzilla 11:53, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Gurch, first, I would have appreciated if he would have asked me if he wanted me to make an ad, before making it, because first, the formatting issues, and second, the wikicode. Second, the source image needed to be sourced in order to see if the banner violated fair use. Third, I haven't seen you creating an ad recently. Fourth, I really don't have time for your "Gurchzilla rah-rah-rah" drama, because I got other things to do. I am not going to waste my time correcting an ad for which a person spent time to create if there is not a blatant fair use violation. Miranda 14:50, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Assume, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, that the license the user has provided is correct. At no point did I say "Gurchzilla rah-rah-rah". This is a separate account, one that I'm making edits from today because this is a public terminal; I don't want my real account compromised, but couldn't care less what happens to this one – Gurchzilla 15:59, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, but I can't assume, I have to verify, so that Wikipedia won't get into trouble. And, I thought Gurchzilla is Gurch on puberty, hence the comment. Miranda 16:19, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

I am the anonymous IP address which added the info th Alpha Kappa Alpha article. I hadn't realized I hadn't signed in before I made the initial edit. I received you message that you have reverted my experiment. I'm not sure what I addded that was experimental or vandalism. Can you be more specific? Thanks.--Ccson 13:08, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Changing the citation date, but I blanked the warning. So, the situation should be fine, now. Miranda 15:04, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
The access date is not just set for the first time the citation is added. An editor can and should change the access date each time the reference is accessed and the editor verifies the information to be still correct. I did link to the quick facts website and that's why i changed the date. If I access another link and the inforamtion is found to be correct, I will change the accessdate since that will be the date of the acesss.--Ccson 16:27, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Award

The Hero of the Wiki award
I. Chrislk02, award you my hero of the wiki award. Your hard work on this project often goes unnoticed, however without it this project would be at a loss. While it is easy for others to spurn your hard work, it is only because it would be impossible for them to live up to your high standards. I hope you accept this award and hold your head high as a hero of this project, a hero of the wiki. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 05:55, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. Miranda 09:14, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, but recent history tells me that you are a loser. I would prefer it if you didn't reply, so you could "quit trolling on my page and contribute to the encyclopedia". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Boyleharry (talkcontribs)

This seems like it's a good place to try again.

Banner, citations

I added the banner because the NPHC is included is a civic org, of which AKA is a member.

What is it about the citations that I changed that you don't like? I thought anyone could update an article? thanksx--Ccson 13:14, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

The banner should be added last, IMHO, because it messes up the format of the citations. Second, when you retrieve a source, like I did on the ninth, you don't change the date of the source when it was last accessed, but, when the source was first accessed and placed in the article. Yes, anyone can update an article, but I am cautious of vandalism by aspirants of the sorority. Thanks for understanding. Miranda 15:04, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
I disagree with you about the access date. The information for the cite web template indicates "accessdate: Full date when item was accessed. Can you point me to the wikipedia policy where you obtained your understanding. Thanks--Ccson 16:33, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Don't change the access date for anything. Common knowledge dictates that a file from a specific version can change because new facts are constantly being updated. For example, Friday's version differs from Tuesday's version. I have based the facts on the May 9th date, and changing the access date will not correlate with the facts with the article. Please don't do it again. Miranda 03:40, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Miranda, common knowledge is a fallacy that essentially warns against assuming that just because everyone believes something is true does not make it so, I equate common knowledge to original research. Remember, this is a wiki; and one cannot use either point to stop editors from adding to, modifing or removing work that currently exist. Plus, no editor controls an article or the text they contributed. You do a lot of good work for wikipedia, but your actions must be based on policy when someone asks why you have reverted or removed they changes; Common Knowledge i s not a good response or defense.--Ccson 13:04, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
There's good reasons to keep the accessed date static, if a site updates or moves pages on a daily basis, like Wikipedia does with the front page, it hampers finding the page again following any archival. Newspapers often redesign their websites and move content about, so the access date on or shortly after the date of publication can assist in retrieving the same page under a new URL, as has been the case with some of The London Times online material. If material cannot be found or is removed permanently, it also assists us in using material from the Internet Archive. The accessdate isn't important when the link is working, it's more important when the link stops working, basically. Nick 21:15, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
No, but refactoring citations when they are right is not good either. This is called vandalism. Miranda 20:11, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Above comment, too strong. I agree with Nick. Miranda 06:20, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

template ads

hi miranda, I was looking at Image:Peru Maps JMK Team.gif and thought it could be used in the template ads, I would add it by myself but I think there says it needs your approval --Andersmusician $ 04:42, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Too small. I can make it bigger, though. Miranda 04:44, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
I will come up with a new ad. Tell me what you would like for the ad, and I will try to make it. Miranda 06:43, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
great, well I wonder if images from Image:Peru_Portal.png would show properly on a gif file. --Andersmusician $ 16:07, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
- Done. Miranda 11:34, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your ad, it looks really nice, I didn't know we have this ability to add ads in this way, now I understand that is 468px by 60 px. I am creating other ads for other projects, I will comeback for your permission. Again, thanks. John Manuel-"-Todos Llegan de Noche, todos se van de día" 13:59, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

(reduce indent) First, you don't have to ask me permission to add ads on the ad project. Second, I am not making ads anymore, and if you have any questions regarding making ads, please go to Gurch. Thanks! Miranda 14:07, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Sorry to hear that you are deciding to leave, you seem to be a nice person, I read your page by chance today, anyway why Andersmusician ask you for permission in the first place then? about the ads it is fine, I am able to do then myself, but if you let me know what software are you using I will appreciate it so much. Hope, I am not causing you any more stress, this is not my intention at all, and thank you for what you have already done for our Wikiproject Peru and for any assistance that you could render by responding my questions. Greetings.John Manuel-14:28, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
First, I don't know why he asked me. His original image was too small and not 468 by 60. Second, I use GIMP and Microsoft GIF Animator to make my banners. Miranda 15:18, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Hey thanks miranda, wont bother you again --Andersmusician $ 16:54, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi Miranda, could I ask you a big favour? Even though I haven't met you before, I saw somewhere that you were accepting requests to create ads, and everyone at WikiProject Malta would be eternally grateful if you could make an ad for the project. Its very new, and we need the kickstart that such an ad would promote. Please get back to me with a reply: if you can - that would be awesome, if you cant - that's okay as well. Thanks! -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 11:20, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Sure. Should get it to you this week. I made two banners today, and I am kind of pooped. Miranda 11:33, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
How about this? Miranda 16:18, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Hello, Miranda. I'm afraid I must ask you the same favor. I'm currently trying to get WikiProject Puerto Rico more active by creating a newsletter, and I think an ad would help me even more. Please feel free to decline my request or take as much time as you want with it. Happy editing! Yours sincerely, Eddie 23:20, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
How about this? Miranda 16:18, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Looks great! Only one small observation. Shouldn't it say WikiProject Puerto Rico instead of Wikipedia Puerto Rico? Thanks! Yours sincerely, Eddie 16:30, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Sorry for bothering you again, but I think Boricuan is written with a C. Thanks! Yours, Eddie 16:35, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, but I won't make corrections at this time. Miranda 16:42, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
I have made the correction. But, next time that you make a correction comment, please consider, that I stayed up late at night to make these banners all together. In addition, I had to research the information on my own time, because information was not provided. Anyway, this will be the last banner that I will ever make on this project (i.e. Wikipedia). Miranda 17:12, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Sorry. I did not mean to cause any stress. I specifically stated that you could decline my request at any time. I thank you for taking the time to create this banners, and I wish all the best in your real life. Yours sincerely, Eddie 18:15, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
As said above in the page, barnstars are nice, specifically since I have done these two banners at the last minute. Miranda 01:01, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

My dear Miranda

Thank you for all that you have done!
How much love resides therein!
All one's gifts are never gone:
Not seen, perhaps, but stored within.
Kindness is an inner sun.

Your unspent heart a message sends
Of grace and sacrifice hard-won
Upon which happiness depends!

Thank you so much, my dear Miranda! :)

Miranda

I sincerely hope you accept this apology and decide to stay on the project. You are a wonderful editor and we both took our dispute to far. I am very sorry for the remarks I have made about you. Please stay, we all need you.
YOU are a ray of sunshine! =)

Thanks so much for the apology. I apologize too for seeming angry, but that was not my intention. By the way, the dispute between us was not the main reason that I was leaving, but instead was the tipping point of me leaving the project. Due to my off-wiki life, I was contemplating leaving the project some time. I just finally made a decision to do so due to recent events. Hope you have a nice experience on the project. See you around. Miranda 13:56, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
