Archival of closed discussions...

Could Mizbot be used to archive sections on the noticeboards (or anywhere) that matches a regex like /\{\{archive top(.*?)\{\{archive bottom\}\}/ on the next pass instead of waiting for said archived/closed discussion to go stale after 3-5-7-10-30 days? Technical 13 (talk) 18:04, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bumping thread. Technical 13 (talk) 06:18, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You'll be bumping this for months... as I wrote at #Archiving of things like Signpost, Misza13 (talk · contribs) isn't around much these days, so the chances of any features being added are very low. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:22, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Apparent archive bot failure

It is suggested that Miszabot I failed to act here. Please can you check why, and that my current config is OK? Cheers, Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:10, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) After staring at it for several minutes, I finally saw and fixed the error. -- John of Reading (talk) 14:28, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Auto archiving disabled?

Have I, or someone else done something wrong on my TP? For the past month running I have yet to see MiszaBot III in action, at least when it comes to my talk page. Any ideas? hmssolent\You rang? ship's log 12:07, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Your archiving configuration doesn't set the values of "minthreadsleft" or "minthreadstoarchive", so the bot is using the default values 5 and 2. So the bot will only act when it can archive 2 or more threads, leaving 5 or more threads behind. When you last did your manual archiving there were only six threads on the page. If you really want the bot to clear the page, then you need to set minthreadsleft=0 and minthreadstoarchive=1. -- John of Reading (talk) 12:17, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving

My talk page hasn't been archived in a while(Lihaas (talk) 09:13, 4 July 2013 (UTC)).[reply]

MiszaBot III doesn't like the {{User:MiszaBot/config}} to be anywhere other than the very first section. This edit was the root cause, although since {{User:MiszaBot/config}} was still in the first section, it didn't become a problem until this edit where those two blank lines created an empty section at the very top. This edit should fix it. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:49, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help with archiving needed

I set up archiving at Talk:Printed circuit board on 14 June but so far nothing has got archived. I assume I have done something wrong and any help with finding what it is would be appreciated. SpinningSpark 11:10, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, just found a silly mistake myself, the name of the archive page was incorrect. But even so, shouldn't it have been archiving to the wrong page? SpinningSpark 11:17, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, there's a safety check written in to the code. If the requested archive page is not a subpage of the page being archived, then Misza13 (talk · contribs) has to supply a magic "key" to override the check. There's one at Wikipedia:New contributors' help page/questions. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:23, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:2013 Egyptian coup d'état

Could you start archving Talk:2013 Egyptian coup d'état? Thx(Lihaas (talk) 16:11, 6 July 2013 (UTC)).[reply]

Done, see here. I chose 4 days because the oldest threads are dated 3 July, and the next bot run is 7 July. If you think that 4 days is too long, you just need to adjust the algo(4d) --Redrose64 (talk) 18:57, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine. Thanks.(Lihaas (talk) 03:24, 8 July 2013 (UTC)).[reply]

K sizes, 1000 or 1024?

Hello!

When we set the K size of the maximum archive size, does K equal 1000 or 1024 bytes? So would 64K be 64000 or 65536? Thanks! -- (T) Numbermaniac (C) 04:19, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Without the source code it's hard to say exactly what the bot does with the limit. I'd guess that K means 1000, since the bot declared User talk:John of Reading/Archive 6 to be "full" when it reached 71,583 bytes, which is a little less than 70*1024. But if an archive is not full, the bot is prepared to write one thread to it regardless of the limit; thus User talk:John of Reading/Archive 8 has ended up at 76,535 bytes, which is well past 70*1000 or 70*1024. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:00, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I would guess the only way to test it would be to, for example, if the max is 70K, you could make a discussion that deliberately makes the size of the page end up between 70000 and 71680, and see whether the bot says full or not. -- (T) Numbermaniac (C) 23:57, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bot not coming over the hill

Curious behaviour. Some sections: #1. are copied repeatedly into /Archive 2, and #2. are not deleted from the Talkpage. #3. The /Archive 2 page went way over the limit |maxarchivesize=128K (the counter was not changed into "3"). After I noticed this, I manually:

1. Deleted the already archived sections from the Talkpage: [1] [2].
2. Changed the |counter= from 2 to 3: [3].

After this, the bot seems to work as expected: [4], into /Archive 3.

So two things happened unexpectedly: the bot did not upnumber when the archive page was full, and it did not delete sections it had archived. -DePiep (talk) 10:43, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So the number of template calls matters? I don't mind reducing |maxarchivesize=128K, but the background evades me. Any logic? -DePiep (talk) 18:27, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's not necessarily the number of template calls; the bot may simply have been confused by an overlarge archive. The archive size is based on unexpanded templates, since the bot copies raw wikicode and does not expand templates - that is to say, {{RailGauge|ussg}} counts as 18 bytes.
This edit will not make a difference; it's not necessary to have {{User:MiszaBot/config}} at the very top - the only placement criterion is that it must be in the first section. Indeed, there are plenty of pages that archive quite happily where {{User:MiszaBot/config}} is the last, or last-but-one, item in the first section.
Back to the original problem. I've seen this happen in different situations, but they all come down to one thing: |counter= points to an archive page that is larger than |maxarchivesize=. This can come about in various ways, these include: |counter= is adjusted downwards; |maxarchivesize= is adjusted downwards; somebody carries out a manual archive that takes the size of the current archive beyond |maxarchivesize=. More at User talk:Misza13/Archives/2013/01#Bug in archiving of Template talk: and User talk:Misza13/Archives/2013/02#Archive duplication and counter rollover at WT:WikiProject Computing.
To avoid such problems, I would make sure that if a manual archive is performed, or |maxarchivesize= needs to be reduced, |counter= must be set to the next unused number, unless you can be certain that the current archive is below |maxarchivesize= --Redrose64 (talk) 19:40, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, great reading. To be safe, I have reduced to |maxarchivesize=64K, this talkpage does not do that much traffic and such. The expand-thing makes sense for the page. The still buggy combination of two errors I noted here I will not pursue to solve -- someone else might. (a note: /Archive 2 page was not manually edited, until after this report = after bot behaved well.) -DePiep (talk) 20:34, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Misza bot not working

I have read the FAQ. This is my configuration:

{{User:MiszaBot/config
|archiveheader = {{talk archive navigation}}
|maxarchivesize = 50K
|counter =
|minthreadsleft = 10
|minthreadstoarchive = 2
|algo = old(72h)
|archive = User talk:Kmzayeem/Archive %(year)d
}}

There are currently 79 threads in my talk page. I've also checked the possibility of spam-blacklisted URL.--Zayeem (talk) 19:15, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure, but I think it could be the space before the % in the archive line and I fixed that. I also increased the size of the archive. If you are going forward by year, 50K seemed a bit small to me. If you really want 50K please do change it back. Mine is set at 800K. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:35, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh ok, didn't notice this post so posted on your talk page! Thanks again! --Zayeem (talk) 19:44, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The space before the % should not cause trouble; it works fine at many other pages, such as Help talk:Citation Style 1. My own feeling is that it's the |counter= with no value. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:01, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Redrose64 is right... It is the empty counter parameter. Set it to "1". Also, Vegaswikian, 800K is WAY too large. No-one (including the bot) will be able to load it at that size and you will end up with troubles and may lose access to everything on that page due to too large a size. Post-expand page size should never exceed 256K by much (and that is stretching the limit). Technical 13 (talk) 22:20, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are many archive pages over 256K. Anyone know how to find the largest talk page archive? Vegaswikian (talk) 23:14, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This archive was created and maxed out at 389,610 bytes even though the limit was set at 700K. So it would appear that the bot does change the maximum based on something. Vegaswikian (talk) 23:23, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Redrose64, but in the description it says If the %(counter)d variable is not used, it is ignored. which is why I left the place empty. I want to archive per the year of the thread being archived, which means my current threads should be archived at User talk:Kmzayeem/Archive 2013. How should I do that? Thanks.--Zayeem (talk) 08:21, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest finding another user's talk page which already archives in the manner desired, and copy settings from that. I have found that User talk:Andy Dingley, User talk:Arthur Rubin, User talk:Barek, User talk:Cat-five, User talk:Christian75, User talk:DVdm, User talk:Emperor, User talk:Hiding, User talk:Magiciandude, User talk:Mtaylor848, User talk:WDGraham, User talk:Wingtipvortex, User talk:Wwoods and User talk:Yworo currently archive to User talk:Andy Dingley/Archive 2013, User talk:Arthur Rubin/Archive 2013, User talk:Barek/Archive 2013, User talk:Cat-five/Archive 2013, User talk:Christian75/Archive 2013, User talk:DVdm/Archive 2013, User talk:Emperor/Archive 2013, User talk:Hiding/Archive 2013, User talk:Magiciandude/Archive 2013, User talk:Mtaylor848/Archive 2013, User talk:WDGraham/Archive 2013, User talk:Wingtipvortex/Archive 2013, User talk:Wwoods/Archive 2013 and User talk:Yworo/Archive 2013; so those might be good ones to look at. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:50, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's working now! I guess the problem was with the CSS, thanks for fixing it! --Zayeem (talk) 17:02, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
