November 2009

[edit]

Please do not delete content or templates from pages on Wikipedia, as you did to Article, without giving a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. Your content removal does not appear constructive, and has been reverted. Please make use of the sandbox if you'd like to experiment with test edits. Thank you. A tag has been placed on Kenya roads board, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing no content to the reader. Please note that external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article don't count as content. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 20:06, 22 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not vandalize pages, as you did with this edit to Article. If you continue to do so, you will be blocked from editing. Dogposter 20:28, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is your last warning. You will be blocked from editing the next time you vandalize a page, as you did with this edit to Article.  fetchcomms 20:30, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. A tag has been placed on Westgate, Nairobi requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Call for Wikipedians in Residence in Africa

[edit]

Hello,

I hope you are well and thriving!! WikiAfrica has just put out a call for two Wikipedians in Residence. One in Cape Town at WikiAfrica, at the Africa Centre; and the other for WikiAfrica Cameroon in Douala, at doual’art. If you are interested, please contact either Marilyn [marilyn.doualabell@doualart.org] for the WikiAfrica Cameroon call or Isla [islahf@africacentre.net] for the WikiAfrica position in Cape Town.

If you are not interested in applying, I would be very grateful if you could spread this call far and wide among your networks to ensure that both projects get excellent candidates. Here is the link for the information page: http://www.wikiafrica.net/two-wikipedians-in-residence-for-africa/

Best regards, Islahaddow

Tips

[edit]

Firstly, look at WP:BIO - not everyone gets an article. A CEO of a big enough company usually does. A Communications Officer or a Financial Officer - no. A university professor - usually yes. A school headteacher - not unless the school is Eton or somewhere like that. Of course, notability other than their job can be added - but it must be notability by OUR standard, not whatever it says in your dictionary. References to prove notability should fit in with WP:RS - reliable independent sources. Secondly, don't remove speedy deletion tags from articles you have created. This can lead to blocking if done too often, and after being warned about it. Third, do remember that this is an encyclopaedia, and that not everyone or everything gets an article. Two good people to talk to about articles are User:Tokyogirl79 and User:MelanieN. Very good knowledge and good at finding references if needed. Peridon (talk) 13:28, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you [User:Peridon|Peridon]] for the advise. Though in my opinion, term Notability seems skewed from your interpretation. Clearly it seems if I want to create and compile notable and influential persons in Nairobi, Wikipedia is not the place? Please do advise. Please do just let me get started with this and see how notable I will prrove to you this people are. Atleast for a Kenyan Wikipedia User.Limoke oscar (talk) 13:37, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I saw your comments on Talk:Dorothy Ooko, and I'm of the same opinion as Peridon above. The problem with this article is that it doesn't say anything special or worthy of notice that Ooko has done. There are lots of people who work as communications managers, and lots of people who work at Google. Not all of them have articles! More problematically, although the article has sources, they're either blogs (which are generally unreliable) or don't give any more information than basic facts. I might be able to argue against the {{db-corp}} tag, but I think I'd have a hard time getting a "keep" result if it went to WP:AfD as it stands. Have a look at our notability guidelines for people and this example, which shows how to put a "hook" on an article's first draft to make it stand out. Also, consider using the Article Wizard to write new articles, which get reviewed at Articles for creation, and are a little more forgiving. Don't get me wrong, we need to get more articles from people in this part of the world to help counteract Wikipedia's systematic bias, but we can't just bend policies to do it, unfortunately. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:57, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate all your honest cooments and am sure its in Good Faith. So was I in making the edits. But as we all agree, we cant bend policy just for this one. On a different note, this is perhaps why we have fewer Articles on Africa and Africans. Because, the notability policy is relatively skewed against it. I have a bunch fo useful facts and contributions I would have liked to make about this people but I guess Wikipedia is not the place. At least not now. Thanks Limoke oscar (talk) 14:06, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And don't forget the two editors I linked to above. TG is very good at digging, and I've seen MN show notability on a company I had no hopes for at all. Talk to them and see what they think of your ideas. And you could also try things out on the Kiswahili Wikipedia - many of the non-English ones are less strict on the referencing side (or so it looks to me when I visit them looking for references to try to save something). Get into writing a bit more per article once you get to understand our meaning of notability - it might even be different on the Kiswahili WP. Good luck. ooops case closed. I did agree delete the categories and the articles. Was trying to get my footing again on the EN:WP but it seems now is not the time. Ticket closed and no more arguments., please please. Limoke oscar (talk) 14:38, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please slow down and read the instructions. If you want to oppose the deletion of this category, the category talk page is not the place to do so. As is said above, and on the deletion template, you need to comment at the category's entry on the Categories for discussion page. But please note that there are no similar categories for Influential Italians, Vietnamese, Canadians etc ... so you would have to produce some reasoning for creating a whole new category of categories, or a reason why Kenyans should be treated differently from every other nationality! PamD 14:19, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Which user name are you using?

[edit]

It appears that in 2011 you changed your username from User:Limoke oscar to User:Mpmayenge. Why are you now editing under the old name? PamD 14:07, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Probably didn't know you aren't supposed to. I would advise sticking to one account only as it can cause problems. I don't think there's any underhand stuff here. Second accounts when used properly are for people who sometimes edit from less secure computers, so if someone gets into the second account it can be blocked without trouble. Admins tend to do this, as if someone gets hold of their extra buttons there can be real fun. (I've not got a second account, but I'll start one if I'm going to edit somewhere I can't trust.) The trouble with second accounts is that some people use them wrongly. They try to look like more than one person in discussions (and they then wonder how we spot them...). Decide which one you want to use and stick to it. It's the safest way. Peridon (talk) 17:36, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Invite to the African Destubathon

[edit]

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most geography, wildlife and women articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing, whether it's a river in Malawi, a Nigerian footballer, or a South African civil rights activist, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. For those of you who signed up to the North African contest, that will hopefully be held in the new year. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:11, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
