Stellenbosch to bid for Wikimania 2012!

Hi NJR!

The nascent South African Wikimedia chapter has decided to bid to host Wikimania in Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2012. This would be the first Wikimania in South Africa, and would be a great advertisement for our country. Please take a look at meta:Wikimania_2012/Bids/Stellenbosch. If you can add to the discussion, please do. If you feel that you are able to do anything to help, please join the Wikimedia South Africa mailing list and let us know. Even simple messages of support are valued!

Best regards,

David Richfield

Thanks man!

thanks for editing the Nelson Mandela bridge out of that article. I saw it somewhere listed as one of the tallest structures in the country but I wasn't sure. If you'd like to help some more, check out the major edits I've done to the "list of tallest buildings in Africa" and the page I made, "list of tallest buildings in Egypt". Would be great if you could help a bit with those. :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chadillaccc (talkcontribs) 00:25, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

The Lusitania

Thanks for putting me right about the Lusitania. I was not aware there was more than one ship with the same name. Perhaps the Millers Point article should mention this somehow?
I was also not aware of in which country Millers Point is (not being a local an' all), until I read "Cape Town" in the 2nd para, 2nd sentence. The lead might be altered to something like; "Miller's Point is a headland and stretch of protected coastline of considerable beauty, about 4 km south of Simon’s Town on the road to Cape Point in South Africa.

Regards

RASAM (talk) 09:45, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

Yes, that article does need quite a bit of work. --NJR_ZA (talk) 10:29, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

Translation

Looks good. I don't speak Cape Dutch but it's similar enough to Afrikaans for me to get what it means, and the translation looks well enough. I'll add it. --Another Type of Zombie talk 12:21, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Empire Dawn

Thanks for the map! It's a great idea which could probably be extended to many other ship articles. I've tweaked the width so it is the same width as the infobox. Looks neater that way. Mjroots (talk) 09:32, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

I think it adds value to be able to easily see where an incident occurred NJR_ZA (talk) 10:13, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
PS I have changed SS Empire Adventure to use a multi map. Revert if you do not like it. NJR_ZA (talk) 10:14, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
The multi map is good. Mjroots (talk) 10:26, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

ISO8601

I would just like to ask you about this edit, and what you mean by it. It seems that you have removed a tag that correctly indicates a preferred date format in accordance with WP:MOSNUM. On the other hand, we do not use ISO 8601 date formats in running prose, per same. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 06:44, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

You are quite correct. I misunderstood the purpose of the template and have made that edit in error. Will revert. --NJR_ZA (talk) 07:35, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Deletion of Incredible Connection

NJR, I beg you to reconsider your vote to delete Incredible Connection. I and patsw have come up with some good sources that establish notability. Currently, there are 3 votes to 2 in favour of deletion, so if you change your vote now we could keep this article. It is a notable company, and deserves to be included on Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Incredible Connection for our most recent arguments. Wishing you a happy public holiday. --User:DiscipleOfKnowledge (talk) 13:20, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

I had a look at it again and unfortunately I still feel that the article does not have a lot of merit. I am South African and occasionally shop at Incredible myself, but I can not see that the article will grow much beyond what is there at the moment. As far as I am concerned it would be far better to redirect Incredible Connection to JD Group Limited and have a section in that article for it. A JD Group article will definitely be a more useful article.
We don't have to agree on all issues in order to work together. The decision to delete or nor will be reached by consensus --NJR_ZA (talk) 10:41, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
Of course, I realise now that there are more important articles that I could be working on. It is the big articles which I now realise that I have been neglecting. Since you are far more experienced than I am and would know better, I would be happy to work with you as a sort of apprentice and help you where I can. Just tell me where you need me. I think I need some guidance. If Incredible Connection does get deleted I will request a copy of the article and archive it in case IC does one day become a massive multinational corporation. :P

--User:DiscipleOfKnowledge (talk) 12:51, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

I don't think you need to be apprentice to anyone, you seem to be doing quite a good job improving articles already. The spirit of Wikipedia is probably best described in Wikipedia:Be bold and, for me, one of the most important things to keep in mind when being bold is Wikipedia:Citing sources. There is a huge amount of work to do, but the best is to pick a topic that you are interested in and improving the articles related to it from a stub or start to something more complete. I prefer science, military and slightly odd and unusual topics. I really enjoyed working on the George Labram and Long Cecil articles; it took bits and pieces of information form all over and gave an almost complete story in those two articles; I doubt you will find such a detailed coverage of that gun and its maker anywhere else. Lately I do not have enough time to spend on wikipedia, but I'll probably spend most of what I have on improving Science and technology in South Africa. That article can be so much more than it is now, just adding a mining section and doing the research to fill it will take a while. --NJR_ZA (talk) 14:18, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi there,

When I came across this article series, I quickly decided that the see alsos on each article could do with a revamp, so I went ahead and created Template:Year in South Africa and have inserted it throughout the series. As I am left with some inconsistencies, and as I am a bit reluctant to sign up as "active" on Wikipedia:WikiProject South Africa (though I found reading the articles as I updated them rewarding, I did this "project" as a coding-thing more than a contribution of knowledge (of which I have very little on the subject)), I'm allowing myself to solicit your opinion on the matter. (You do look very active on WP:SA.)

Could I direct your attention to User_talk:Davshul#Merge_of_articles? Then I ask if you have any objections to my doing as suggested, specifically I propose to move the articles BCE in Southern Africa & Early CE in Southern Africa in the manner I have piped them in the preceding links. At the very least the ADs article should be moved to an article entitled "Early..." or some such. Though I do like his idea of clarifying this at the top of the article, I suppose that going the whole hog of "Early CE in Southern Africa (to the end of 14th century)" is probably going too far? (Yeah, I'm probably making too much of an issue of this...)

If you could make some comment here on your page (or Davshul's if you should wish to), I'd appreciate it. Even merely "Do as you see fit" would be helpful.

Oh, one more little addition to the above: Those first two articles don't really "fit" within the naming convention of the series, ie Southern vs South, but then also, strictly speaking, South Africa is truly only applicable after 1910 anyway... so I suppose it creates a nice progression. --StephanNaro (talk) 18:06, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

I am also active in Wikipedia:WikiProject South Africa and would be happy to give you my opinion as well. I looked at User_talk:Davshul#Merge_of_articles and agree with Davshul's suggestion. Rather create a redirect for 13th century in South Africa and 14th century in South Africa to ADs in Southern Africa for the interim. In the long term we can remove the redirect(s) and make the separate article as Davshul has said. As for consistency concerning the year numbering notation, I would suggest using BCE/CE, as opposed to the AD notation as it seems customary. I looked at your work Template:Year in South Africa, and am impressed by what you have done. If there is anything else I can do, please contact me and I will help you out however I can. --User:DiscipleOfKnowledge (talk) 21:45, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Btw, you don't have to be active in Wikipedia:WikiProject South Africa to participate. Even acting in a de facto capacity would be welcomed because the project is so hopelessly undermanned, save for a few diehards like NJ, and Htonl. Whether or not you choose to stay, your contributions are nevertheless greatly appreciated. Good luck out there! --User:DiscipleOfKnowledge (talk) 21:50, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Stephan, I just got back from a weekend away and have not yet had the time to look at exactly what it is you are doing. From a quick glance I do not however see a problem. If you are simply consolidating sparse information into AD articles that is probably a good thing. Just make sure to leave redirects behind. --NJR_ZA (talk) 10:48, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Thanks htonl. WP:RSA assessment has been in need of some attention for quite a while, thought I'd give it a go and see if I can clean it up some. I suppose I should drop a message on the project talk page as well to let others know what I am up to. --NJR_ZA (talk) 18:09, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for doing all the article assessments. You covered a lot of HIV-related non-profit organizations which I watch. Blue Rasberry (talk) 01:28, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject South Africa Article alerts subscription

Hi! Regarding this fix -- does the report page omit or list incorrect pages for the report? It looks like Category:WikiProject South Africa articles contains all the pages directly? There appears to be no need for redundant banner or subcategory usage. Regards. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 11:17, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

You are correct, it seems Category:WikiProject South Africa articles does contain all the articles directly. I will revert my change as it is probably not required. --NJR_ZA (talk) 11:24, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

Tagging municipality articles

Hey, when you tag municipality articles for WP:RSA, you could also add the |Municipalities=yes parameter to also tag them for the municipalities task force. Cheers, htonl (talk) 10:49, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Erm, yes. Missing that was just stupid of me. I'll redo after I had some coffee. --NJR_ZA (talk) 11:40, 11 July 2011 (UTC)
Oh, I wasn't suggesting you go back over the ones you've already done! Though I see you've done that, so, thanks! - htonl (talk) 11:58, 11 July 2011 (UTC)
Might as well fix then while we are at it. --NJR_ZA (talk) 11:59, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi, and thank you for the images you've added to that article on 2011-05-08! It is a great improvement. Thanks a lot! :) WillNess (talk) 10:35, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

No problem, some things are just easier to understand when you add a picture to it. --NJR_ZA (talk) 11:10, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

SKA photo problem

You are welcome to use any of the photos I took in 2009 when I visited the site as part of a group of amateur radio operators - My SKA site photos on Flikr We were the last people legally allowed to transmit radio signals from the site. The restrictions came into force shortly after our visit. Unfortunately the KAT7 array was still under construction when I took the photos- they are also only low quality cellphone camera images. Roger (talk) 09:19, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks Roger. I will check on flikr --NJR_ZA (talk) 09:30, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Another photo request

Hi, NJR! Are you interested in doing another photo request? I found that the French company Total has offices in Joburg.

  • TOTAL House 3 Biermann Avenue Rosebank

Would you be interested in photographing the building? Thank you WhisperToMe (talk) 01:35, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Sure, will do. That one does have a TOTAL logo on the building. Nu Metro head-office accross the road can be done at the same time. Will go there over a weekend as parking can be a real pain in Rosebank during the week; not this weekend though, this weekend is AFB Waterkloof Airshow --NJR_ZA (talk) 05:24, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Cool :) - Please let me know when you get the photos (Total and Nu Metro)! Thanks, WhisperToMe (talk) 05:26, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
BTW, if you want to try another, I found "Ster-Kinekor Office Park 185 Katherine Street Eastgate Ext.4 Sandton" - That's where Ster Kinekor is based - Thanks, WhisperToMe (talk) 05:37, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
I drive past there every day on my daily commute, but can't recall ever seeing the Ster-Kinekor logo or any other signage on that office block. Will check this afternoon and get a photo tomorrow morning. --NJR_ZA (talk) 06:54, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you :) WhisperToMe (talk) 07:04, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Another request

Hey NJR! If you'd like another photo request, I found the address for the Massmart head office:

  • Massmart House, 16 Peltier Drive, Sunninghill Ext. 6, Sandton 2157, Republic of South Africa

WhisperToMe (talk) 22:25, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Will put it on the list of Gauteng photos I need to take --NJR_ZA (talk) 12:18, 12 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks :) WhisperToMe (talk) 15:10, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

SAAF Aircraft Photo

Hi NJR. See Talk:29 Squadron SAAF - I originally used the photo you posted, but later changed it because I was uncertain that it was actually a Ventura! Views? Farawayman (talk) 18:12, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

It's a Ventura allright. I should have a photo from another angle on disk, will check. If not I can pop around to AFB Swartkop and take another over the weekend. --NJR_ZA (talk) 18:18, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
Seems like I will have to go back for another photo, only have the Ventura from that angle. It is SAAF 6498, a LOCKHEED L-37 PV-1 VENTURA GR Mk 5. Check here for details.
SAAF Lockheed Lodestar
While looking for another photo of that Ventura I did however come across a nice photo of the Lodestar standing next to it (behind it in the Ventura photo) and have uploaded that for now. --NJR_ZA (talk) 18:46, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Nick, dankie vir jou terugvoer gister oor referencing styles. Dit lyk of jy 'n perd is wat weet hoe werk Wikipedia. Ek is nuut hier en weet min van hoe dinge werk. So hier is my probleem: Ek is so twee derdes klaar met 'n artikel oor Sophiatown.

Ek reken dit is nou C of B quality eerder as Start.
Roger (talk) 09:24, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
