Dear Nagualdesign, I'm Dutch -and blunt. There are well over 4,500 photos in the Category:Images with timestamp watermarks on Commons. Not all timestamps need removal, as most images aren't in use onwiki. But there are several hundreds of images that are used well over a thousand times (some images on many different Wikipedia language versions). I don't expect you to work on a few dozen more, as you have already handled the most heavily used images, but could you indicate what would be your preference? I see three possibilities, that are all pretty much OK with me. 1. I stop proposing new timestamp removal requests to you. 2. I propose 10 last images. 3. I supply a link, from which you can choose which images would be most fitting to remove timestamps from. Could you tell me what option you would like best? Thanks for all the trouble you took so far. I appreciate your candour. Ideally I'd like to work on images that matter because they're used in lots of articles and/or article(s) that get a lot of views, or make edits that drastically improve the quality of images. To be honest, rather than simply removing timestamps I'd prefer something more challenging. I'm not expecting you to do lots of legwork, but when you happen upon any images that would benefit from editing feel free to post a request and I'll see what I can do. Woman image request

Hey Nagual! I've received more positive feedback about image #2, so I was wondering if you would be interested in cleaning it up (or redoing it) prior to the RfC. This is the original version prior to desaturating the shirt, blurring the background, and cropping. The current version at least needs cleanup around the collar. Feel free to play around with the color of the shirt to make it less bold. I wonder if almost white would look best?

Since there was positive feedback on the woman herself, I found another potential image of her (notice how well it pairs with the man image). Do you think this one is well-composed? It will be tricky to crop because she's posed asymmetrically, but it may work to cut off her elbow and crop at the knee. If you like it, it would also need background blurring, and perhaps darkening of the top right background and reducing shine on the right side of her face. Thanks again! @Kolya Butternut: I tried a few different options. In the end I settled on a pale shirt colour, which I think looked far more natural than any other hue or saturation. I decided against working on the other image you suggested as it's quite low quality when you look at it up close, and would take a lot of effort and still look nowhere near as good as the other images available. Norma Bates

Are you a fan of Psycho? The lead image of Norma Bates is the actress from the modern Bates Motel (TV series) which I don't think is recognizable as Norma Bates. Even though it's not from the original movie, I love this publicity still for the prequel Psycho IV: The Beginning. The house in the background makes it recognizable even though that movie and Olivia Hussey's depiction are relatively obscure. What do you think of photoshopping Henry Thomas' face out of the image for a crop including most of her hat? @Kolya Butternut: The original film is brilliant but I had no idea that there were so many sequels and spinoffs. I'd also never heard of Norma by name until now, or that she'd ever been portrayed by an actress (in the original film it was just Anthony Perkins in a wig IIRC, and at the end we see that she was actually a corpse). Looking at the article, it seems like a good quality image of Vera Farmingo to me, but I'd be happy to help with an alternative image. If you could upload the publicity still to Commons along with proper licensing info (assuming it's permissible), then post a link here, I can edit it as you suggested. nagualdesign 02:12, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

I would like to upload both the Psycho IV publicity still and the screen capture of the silhouette, but I'm not sure if they'd be permitted non-free use images. That was my concern too. You could always upload it directly to Wikipedia with a fair-use rationale. For what it's worth I've already edited the publicity still, but I'm really not sure if editing a fair-use image is asking for trouble. Then again, worst case scenario, it will simply be deleted. So if you're willing to go through the rigmarole of uploading the original and filling out the fair-use rational (something I despise doing) I can upload my edit immediately. Wow, where did you get the other background window from? It looks great, but the porch doesn't actually wrap around like that. Here's a photo from the set which was recreated at Universal Studios Orlando: [1] I was thinking it would be best to keep most of the house in frame. (The house is what makes the character recognizable.) The image doesn't represent in-world accuracy anyway, as Henry Thomas and Anthony Perkins play the same character at different ages. I edited out what I could using the pixels available. I managed to reconstruct half of the window frame by using the other half. Unfortunately, the body of the guy in the middle covers up quite a lot of the house so I took a few liberties rather than just leaving that area black, and there was no way of completely removing both men without knowing what's behind them. The image of the house you linked to may make it possible. I'll have a try later. You could even argue that if I cut out the actress completely and place her against the other background it would qualify as transformative, though I wouldn't hold your breath. nagualdesign 20:30, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

Transgender image

Hi Nagual! Could you remove the slight pink hue from this photo at Transgender? Although I'm not 100% sure that I'm not imagining that I'm seeing pink in their faces...You can see the two of them individually in better/different lighting towards the end of this album. Done. I've uploaded a new version. The difference is only slight. The problem with colour casts due to lighting is that the effect is uneven - areas that are unlit by the pink light don't require 'correcting' - but it's nearly impossible to create a perfect mask that only targets specific areas. For that reason you can end up under-correcting some areas and over-correcting others, so it's better to err on the side of under-correcting everything. In this case, doing a stronger correction left some areas looking greenish, which makes skin tones look very odd, so I settled on a very minor correction that is only a slight improvement. nagualdesign 00:00, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Actually you did thank me already, but I appreciate the note. I'm just glad it had some effect, with a couple of other editors even pointing out that it was a sensible assessment of the situation. That whole incident has been reverberating in my mind ever since, and just this evening I was beginning to formulate the makings of an essay of sorts about so-called 'wokeness'. There's a lot of effort being made by Wikimedia to encourage equality, which is a good thing, but there seems to me to be very little thought being put into nurturing diversity. In fact, there seems to be an abundance of thoughtlessness that aimlessly aims to mould all editors into a single, grey, genderless caricature, with no differences of opinion. Whereas I'm of a mind that our differences are a treasure trove that ought to be preserved, even if it means stepping on each other's toes from time to time. I haven't written anything down yet, I've just been thinking of ways of putting my thoughts into words without it coming across as a reactionary rant, but I think I might be onto something. When I write the first draft I'd be very happy if you could take a look at it and give me some input, if you don't mind. It might take me a few days but I'll let you know when the time comes. Bit of an update, I'm a little lost for words. While I feel certain that my intentions are good, I'm finding it very difficult to formulate my writing in a way that it won't be deemed "x‑ist" - be it racist, sexist, homophobic or whatever - all of which I'm vehemently against. Specifically, no matter how hard I try, the things I'm focused on at the moment tend to make me look transphobic. And that's actually the crux of the matter; as a white, heterosexual male, simply having the temerity to focus on transgender issues automatically puts me on the back foot, which is pretty pathetic in my opinion, but may well be enough for me to keep my opinions to myself rather than wasting my breath.

Consider these two recent examples. Yesterday, Karan Kundra, an Indian film and television actor, left a post at the Help Desk. He seems to have mistakenly believed that he has some authority over the WP article about him and was having some difficulty editing it. He was rightly informed about WP:OWN, WP:COI and WP:AUTO. Fair enough, right? Now contrast that with Jericho Vincent, a transgender author formerly known as Leah Vincent. To my knowledge, Vincent never asked WP for any special treatment, but the article has recently been edited and moved in order to avoid use of English pronouns or "deadnaming". In fact, there's no mention whatsoever that Vincent is transgender or was ever called Leah, despite having previously published under that name, and the only hint is the sentence, In 2019, Vincent came out as genderqueer, and changed their first name to "Jericho". It also says that Jericho Vincent was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, et cetera (emphasis mine), which isn't strictly factual. Of course I have no wish to cause anyone any distress but to me this just seems like whitewashing. And to be quite honest, even using the word whitewashing in this context is now fraught with danger thanks to an overzealous minority of self-appointed do-gooders. ..Oh Jesus, I didn't mean minority like that! ...Oh shit, I said "Jesus"! I'm so sorry!!! Erm...

Perhaps it's an odd tangent to a lot of people but I'm reminded of the recent ~~mob vandalism~~ urban activism by self-styled "BLM protesters" who, among many other things, tore down a statue of Edward Colston and pushed it into Bristol Harbour (to be later fished back out at public expense). The thing is, the statue wasn't erected to commemorate his role in the African slave trade. Of course not! It was there to commemorate his philanthropy, such as spending his earnings (ill-gotten, in retrospect) on the Bristol community. Colston Hall, a Grade II listed concert hall built on the site of a boys' school that Colston had established "in order to educate the poor", has since been renamed Bristol Beacon. Presumably this is so we can all forget that the slave trade ever happened, or that us ordinary folk ever benefited from it. God forbid! It was those nasty toffs lining their own pockets, nothing to do with us. No siree bob!

Call me what you will but I'm a firm believer that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. In Barrowford, where I grew up and my mother still lives, there used to be huge cotton mills. We were all taught about our industrial heritage at school, and people like my mother have lots of books about old Barrowford. What they neglected to teach us, and came as quite a surprise to my mother when I explained it to her, is that Lancashire imported the lion's share of US cotton in the 1800s. I pulled up the facts and figures for her, including what percentage of cotton came from America, what percentage of UK imports came to Lancashire and how many thousands of tonnes per year that equated to, then invited her to imagine how much cotton a slave would have to pick to gather a single tonne. Suffice to say, she'd simply never put two and two together before. Afterwards, I bought her a copy of Twelve Years a Slave.

To me, anyone who describes themselves as 'woke' is actually saying "I've recently realized these things" (or "I didn't realize that racism/sexism/whatever was bad but now that I'm at university the penny's dropped") while making the gross assumption that the rest of us old fogies are turning a blind eye to inequity. And what many of them don't seem to realize yet is how naive they still are. You're not 'doing your bit' to set the world to rights by editing Wikipedia to rewrite history, that much I'm certain of.

I say lost for words, but that was actually a wall of text! I can only apologize. What I meant is, I'm lost under a mountain of words.

No, I didn't receive any responses or work out what was happening. I also just checked and the problem persists. The archives for the Photography Workshop have nothing filed for May, and it's now the 1st of June. If Cluebot III begins archiving content as if it was May then I guess that might help to diagnose the issue. I think I left a note on the Cluebot III talk page but I was never pinged, and ironically I can't find the archives for that talk page to check if anyone responded there. nagualdesign 00:35, 1 June 2021 (UTC)
