Survey Request: VT Massacre article

Hi, Natalie I am a professor at Boston College studying the development of the Wikipedia page on the Virginia Tech massacre. You were one of the top 5% of editors to the page, and I was wondering if you would be willing to answer a brief survey about your participation.

   * The survey can be found at: User:Geraldckane/survey (your response will be by email).
   * Information about my research can be found at: User:Geraldckane

Your participation will help me (and hopefully the Wikipedia community) better understand the collaborative process that results in exemplary articles. If you do not wish to participate and this solicitation was unwelcome, please accept my apologies and simply delete this message from your talk page. I will not contact you again.

Spanish Wikipedia?

Hi, since your Spanish is at level 2, why not you register yourself in the Spanish Wikipedia? If you've already have an account, I suggest you to make an InterWiki to your userpage there. --Edmund the King of the Woods! 17:49, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

But maybe for the time being you just register there "for fun". At least you have a place there. Look, I only know a few languages, yet I've registered myself in various languages of Wikipedias! I aim at registering in ALL LANGUAGES before I can go for the Unified login!! Furthermore, buy registering yourself in the Spanish Wikipedia now, you'll prevent yourself from being impersonated there by the vandals over here. Check Misza's userpage in the Polish Wikipedia, the page was once vandalised by placing a photo of a penis! I guess it got to be done by a vandal over here, thought of taking revenge there, where Misza is not active, even though he's a Pole.--Edmund the King of the Woods! 18:03, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for your welcome. A user is reverting all of my edits, however and as far as I know, I am adhering to policy. I would appreciate it if you could provide your input here. Porches 18:18, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

I have done both, because Wikipedia:External Links states that we need to avoid "Any site that misleads the reader by use of factually inaccurate material or unverifiable research. See Reliable sources for explanations of the terms "factually inaccurate material" or "unverifiable research"" as well as "Links to blogs and personal web pages, except those written by a recognized authority." Porches 18:25, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
Well I am having a hard time with this editor. Another user listed some of extreme material coming from this website. Porches 19:00, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
The dispute is over several Wikipedia articles that use this particular website as a source or external link. Porches 19:03, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
It would be great if you could leave a note on the editor's talk page. I will bring the issue up on Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy) or the discussion pages of relevant policies should I continue to have problems. Thank you. Porches 19:23, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

How on earth?

Maybe you can help me out here. How on earth did 71.232.176.63 get our names? (link removed - Sidatio 23:53, 4 August 2007 (UTC)) I've dealt with online harassment before, but this is something else entirely. What can I do to prevent this from occuring in the future? Sidatio 22:24, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

If these edits can be preserved without the public looking at them, I'd deeply appreciate it if you would remove them for my wife's privacy. If, however, this would purge those edits, I would prefer they not be removed. If this individual does in fact represent Mr. Harris, I will need the information for legal proceedings should the user engage in off-line harassment. My name is one thing, but there's no way she should have my wife's.

Thank you VERY much for your prompt reply! I appreciate it. :-) Sidatio 22:38, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

That sounds like a perfect resolution to the matter. I would greatly appreciate it if you could implement that whenever you have the opportunity. Thank you VERY much for your help! :-) Sidatio 23:19, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
We've checked over our userpage, and the information doesn't seem to have come from there. Regardless, we thank you VERY much for your assistance in this matter. Please accept this Barnstar as a token of our thanks! Sidatio 23:53, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

I really appreciate all of your help through all of this, and my wife even more so. This probably seems silly to you, but she's really scared about this. I'm used to worse, but I don't like seeing her upset over something like this. But I digress - we're going to do our best to ignore this nonsense and address legally the more serious issues. We just wanted to thank you again for all of your help. Sidatio 02:54, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Need your help

Hello Natalie Erin, I need your help with something. A request at RFPP came up for the semi-protection on Wal-Mart due to vandalism. I viewed the edits to the Wal-Mart page, and believed the edits being done to the page were vandalism, so I semi-protected it. However, two users, an IP and a user who just signed up, are coming to my talk page and saying it was a content dispute. Would you mind viewing this discussion, and the recent history of Wal-Mart? Thanks. I want to make sure I haven't made a massive mistake. Acalamari 22:40, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for detalied and helpful reply. You are right: I did not semi-protect the article to lock out anonymous editors because of a content dispute; I did it because of vandalism, as I wrote in my semi-protection summary (I will note there was an IP who reverted the vandalism of other IPs a couple of times, so it wasn't an IPs v. registered users edit war at all). I always view a page's history thoroughly whenever an RFPP request comes up in case someone makes a report there to gain an advantage over other editors (and that has happened before). In this case, it appeared to be vandals disrupting the page and reverting legitimate edits.
Again, thank you. I am relieved to know that I didn't make a mistake. I won't be surprised if the users who posted on my talk page will see your response, so I'll see if they respond to you at all. Thanks for this. Acalamari 00:05, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Oh, and thanks for actually taking the time to review the semi-protection, the history, and then write your lengthy response. I am sorry if it took a while, and I hope it wasn't a major inconvenience for you. I am very grateful for what you did. Acalamari 00:15, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

Simple fact: I do not beat around the bush when it comes to people showing a biased one sided view of things, nor do I attempt to reason for very long with those who are obviosly of the type to not listen (IE: those who have closed minds). I also have near ZERO tolerance for such people, since they have no tolerance for anything that doesn't fit their narrow views. Know that I do not go to war unless I am damned sure that I am right, and will use whatever tactics necessary to bring about a timely surrender of my adversary, no matter the cost(ESPECIALLY when one is dealing with a suspected or known ally of such a dishonest company).

For the record, I CAN tell you that anon 69.243.246.69 was the only one not me - and yes, I DO have many "tools" at my disposal to defeat blocking. You have only seen a small fraction of them. Whether 69.243.246.69 was one of the "Sons Of Liberty" or not.... your guess is as good as mine, as I know none of their IP#s. While not exactly an intelligent edit, I'm willing to bet their addition at least made you chuckle - as it did me.

I had asked for either the restoration of the yahoo link, or the removal of the facts link. Instead, I recieved what amouted to double talk from the primary offender. Having seen this type of attitude before, I decided to not waste further time with politeness, and deal with them in the only manner their kind seems to understand. And again - for thwe record - I never declared war on wikipedia itself, Only those who pushed an agenda of lies and twisted facts. The fact that neither of you (Acalamari & Natalie) were targeted should tell you that.

In short, know with certainty that I do not "draw my sword" for no reason. And when I do, it is when I KNOW that the cause I fight for is just.

I couldn't help but notice how helpful you were with Sidatio, so I thought I'd ask you a question. When is it okay to place the {{whois}} template on a vandal's talk page? Douglasmtaylor T/C 03:07, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Hard block necessary?

Happened on the SamHarris spat while on new user patrol ... seems a hard block of SamHarris-com (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) might be necessary, as a duck test reveals that he and 71.232.176.63 are one and the same. Blueboy96 03:16, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

I guess the fact that he's clearly harassing another user makes me think that this shouldn't be just a WP:RBI, but a WP:HRBI ... know what I mean? Blueboy96 03:28, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I meant that to be WP:RHBI ... geez, I should be in bed ... Blueboy96 03:32, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Don't see anything in the log ... maybe it hasn't shown up yet. I actually hoped he was ... we're both listed on that attack page. Blueboy96 03:56, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Jamie Redfern

Natalie - Jamie Redfern here, I can't understand why you would revert my page back to it's original state, which has practically no information at all included on it. All that I wrote is actually very true and has been written about me in many extremely credible newspapers around the world throughout my showbusiness career. I am the person written about and obviously should be relied upon to know what is factual or not and what I am talking about when it comes to my own career. Is it that you think me a little full of myself for simply stating what others have written about me many times ? If so, this is a rediculous and very immature reason for editing all I had written - I am trying to help make your site more informative and the page should be returned to the way I left it - I do feel that an apology also may be in order.

... added at 12:07, 5 August 2007 by Jamie Redfern

Hi Erin. I can't say I'd ever heard of this Redfern fellow. But I read:
Jamie went on to enjoy unprecedented international success as a pop singer and recording artist
Unprecedented, wow. (Move aside Caruso, Crosby, Presley, little Stevie Wonder, Michael "Bad" Jackson.) I must have been seriously underinformed. But you did well to cut the stuff with multiple exclamation points, etc. -- Hoary 12:43, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Admin Question

Just becuase you're an admin who I've interacted with before, I'll ask you. Does Battles In Harry Potter qualify for speedy deletion G4, since there was an article about the Second Wizarding War that was deleted via AfD? I took off the CSd G4 of mine since it wasn't exactly the same. I then prodded it, but it was removed. Thoughts? i said 01:00, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Adnan Oktar's Supposed Anti-Semitism

It appears that you added most of the content under "Antisemitism" in the article on Adnan Oktar. (If not, please excuse my mistake.) I am considering moving the mention of Oktar's book, "Holocaust Lie", from that section into another, more-fitting, section, since it doesn't really suggest anti-Semitism. Since anti-semitism is a subset of racism, I don't see how believing that the holocaust didn't happen qualifies one as anti-Shemite. I personally believe that the holocaust DID happen, so I disagree with Oktar on that subject, but to suggest that his belief makes him a racist against Jews seems like a stretch. What do you think? A reminder

Dear Natalie, back in the March-April period when I asked your help about the disputed content in Reza Shah Page you wrote me:

I understand your frustration - content disputes can be very frustrating. Going through dispute resolution will probably be the easiest way to solve your problems, and will hopefully yield a better article in the long run! Natalie 21:23, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

and about a month later when I asked again for your help to mediate you wrote:

Hello again. I have taken a look at the article and at the talk page, and I don't feel like I can render any judgment in this dispute. Dispute resolution isn't really my field, and this is a more complex dispute than some. Please take a look at the options in dispute resolution for more help. Natalie 00:26, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Later,I did try various dspute resolution options. I even thought it may help if I go to step 2 and leave the page for few months. However. Behnam an admin discouraged me from doing so. He wrote here [2]:
You can leave if you want to, but I'm not sure how much it will help. I interpret Step 2 as recommending disengagement so that those involved can cool down a bit, but I don't know if that is applicable with SG. I wish SG would just sit back and give you a chance but he continues to attack you on the talk page. Honestly, leaving will only delay the content dispute - everything will be the same when you come back. So its up to you if you want to take a break - the situation will probably be just about the way you left it, but a break from Wikipedia might be nice. In sum, disengagement probably won't affect the content dispute, but it may be a nice break :-). The Behnam 05:10, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
  • I hope you realize that I was trying in Good Faith to edit the article. I fill blocking me will only help a group of fanatics to push their POVs. Respectfully yours. Artaxerex 23:43, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
Dear Natalie, thank you for your prompt response. I was referring to your verdict in shervink's ANI against Vazgen and I here [3] where you say;
Well, I'm not versed in the specifics of this case, but using sockpuppets to evade a block is prohibited, and the general response is to reset the block, as well as block the socks. Natalie 00:58, 17 August 2007 (UTC) Best Regards Artaxerex
  • Thank you again Nathalie. I just wanted to bring to your attention the gravity of the chauvinistic activities of shervink and his gang , as they try/ and have tried in the past to silence the voice of various minorities. For instance, they have confronted Kurds and forced them to merge their celebration of the new year as part of Iranian celebration. In fact, shervink wrote here [4] "I have no problem at all with the fact that Kurds have their own culture, language, music, dance, etc. In fact, that's truly beautiful. What I have a problem with is that some of these editors deny their ancient ties with the people around them, most importantly the other Iranians, going as far as speculating whether they are more related to jews and arabs rather than Iranians!" )

In fact the fellow insist that "Iranians are not semitic" (for instance here [5] which reads;

Behnam, I am really very surprised that you think you need to teach me about such obvious things. When I say that Iranians are not semitic, I mean that both their languages and their culture are quite distinct from those of the semitic people. This has nothing to do with race. Shervink 07:36, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Thus, according to him the Semitic population of Iran are not Iranians. In fact, even after Behnam tried again to educate him on the racist character of his remarks here[6]which reads:

In light of discussion of "Light of the Aryans," and obvious ethnic use of "Aryan," I didn't find it unreasonable to think that we were talking about "stock." Even if you were actually referring to Aryan language and culture, that itself is highly Semitic. While the basic structure of the language is Indo-European, it has many Arabic loanwords, some Arabic structures, uses Arabic script, poetry based upon Arabic form, etc. As for culture, it is hard to know where to begin on how Semitic it is - Artaxerex already touched on a lot of the major examples ... Anyway, I could go on, but I just don't see it very accurate to say Iran has a non-Semitic culture - what is so "Aryan" about it relative to Semitic elements? The Behnam 18:09, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

He did not retracted, and never has expressed any regret. In fact another member of his gang Mehrshad123 accuses Behnam, of not being Iranian here [7], in spite of the fact that Behnam , according to his user page, considers himself as half-Iranian.

  • In light of the seriousness of such issues, your comments could be conceived as supportive of shervink's campaign to ban me. Respectfully yours Artaxerex 22:46, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Blatantly disregarded your warnings on his talk page. Not only has he continued to revert YOUR edits as well as mine, he has actually re-inserted his spam link back into his fabricated world champion section, and lengthened the section quite a bit. Attempts at communication with the user in talk pages have all failed, and I have filed for RFC on the user [8]. The "Field Commander" page has turned into nothing more than an advertisement for his personal discussion forums.

One of the warnings was that he would be blocked if he continued to revert the removal of spam from the article. Aren't you going to follow through with that? If not, please explain why, and whether or not you changed your mind about his advertising of his forum is considered spam. Blackbeard2k7 14:48, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Requesting an unbiased opinion

Dear Natalie,

I'm stuck. The issue concerns "the unfolding present," a heading within the Wiki article on Stagflation. A section there is headed "Stagflation Worries In The Present Time."

Anyone watching economic news at all can see that there is right now an unfolding crisis, worldwide.

Until late June when the Wiki person "eep" began to threaten reversing all my input, I drew on my extensive background and education to contribute. Until today, I had stopped completely and today I merely made two very minor changes.

It was your greeting that headed the My Talk page when I signed up, and thus I write to you.

Thanks!

Roger
