It is highly recommended that you place this text: {{Educational assignment}} on the talk page of any articles you are working on as part of your Wikipedia-related course assignment. Sandbox, edits[edit]

Hi Nicatwin, here is a sandbox for you to play in. Also, I had a look at USS Makin Island (CVE-93), and you have not yet met the assignment: you need to add a sentence as well as the references. Now, I'll go ahead and reformat the reference, but you still need to add a meaningful statement to the article, OK? Dr Aaij (talk) 04:35, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • There is one more thing: look at WP:RS, and ask yourself, is this a reliable source according to Wikipedia's standards? Is it independent? This isn't a quiz, but if you correctly find out what the answers are to those questions you will be better prepared to a. write that article and b. succeed in your college career...! Dr Aaij (talk) 04:39, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • I see that you didn't ask yourself that question. Dr Aaij (talk) 19:53, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
      • I saw your reply, but I don't understand it. I asked you to ask yourself if your source was independent and reliable, nothing else. And the answer is no on at least the first count: it is not independent since it is a webpage written by the US Navy about one of their own ships. That doesn't mean the information is unreliable, but you always want to look for published and independent sources. The job is always, here and in any other writing assignment, to find independent sources. Dr Aaij (talk) 03:52, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Nicatwin, good work! I made some minor edits. Go look, and look at the edit summaries for explanations of what I did and why. Next step for you is to plow through the newspaper archives and see if you can find interesting facts, which will also beef up your reflist. See if his name is mentioned in the archives of The Chronicle of Higher Education or other education-related journals. Also, see if his books have been reviewed in journals or magazines. Good luck! Dr Aaij (talk) 16:17, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • This can give you another sentence about his work outside of (and before) his chancellorship. Dr Aaij (talk) 17:13, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • And here is a Google News search--doesn't reveal that much, but who knows. Ask your librarian how to look for reviews of his books if you can't find any, and how to search the journals in his field--administration, education, management, etc. Good luck, Dr Aaij (talk) 17:15, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
      • Cool, now I know why Dr. Veres hangs around the Psych Dept so much...he's a psychologist!! lol texasPI TALK 06:22, 3 April 2010 (UTC)yw[reply]

<--Did you do anything with those searches I linked for you three days ago? I don't see anything in the article. Dr Aaij (talk) 14:35, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox[edit]

Hi, I see you added the university infobox to your sanbox article, and Dr Aaij correctly reverted it as being the wrong box to use. There is, however, an appropriate infobox for your subject if you want to use one: Template:Infobox scientist. :) LadyofShalott 14:49, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are all welcome! LadyofShalott 22:51, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

John Veres[edit]

I'm about to post the article in the mainspace, but there are still problems. The categories you added aren't categories; they are simply keywords that don't match existing categories. The templates used in the bibliography aren't correct: I told you in an edit summary that the other books he authored needed to have a "cite book" template and that's not done yet. There may be more--you need to look at this carefully, since the more you leave for other editors, the lower your own reward. Dr Aaij (talk) 02:41, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
