Saint Marinus

There are others, but he's clearly the most famous one. Additionally, I could find virtually nowhere where he's actually called "Marinus the Deacon"; per our naming conventions, we use common names. Hi again. Thanks for that - I've replied over at the discovery page. Briefly, though, it's not a policy, but a strong recommendation, since it allows the people who work with stubs the most to know what types are likely to be created and to double-check there aren't any problems with them before they are made (it's far easier to make stub types right the first time than try to fix them afterwards!) Lučke kapetanije and Cost Guard

Hi. Lučke kapetanije and Croatian Coast Guard are not the same.

Lučke kapetanije are part of croatian Ministry of sea, transport and infrastructure. Some duties you can see here.

Cost Guard is new authorithy, functional from 2008. It is part of the Croatian Navy, under the military command, but in reality is more coordination of several bodies - such Croatian Navy, Police, Lučke kapetanije, and some others. Its duties are protect sovereign rights and carry out Croatia's jurisdiction in the Ecology and Fisheries Protection Zone, the continental shelf and the high seas.

They are not merged together for now, like i said Coast Guard is more coordination between several authorities. We can say that croatian Coast Guard is a use of Navy for civilian purposes. CCG racing stripes

Hi, the ships of Lučke kapetanije don't have new racing stripes, but also, this is the thing with Navy ships. New racing stripes exist only on paper, but ships haven't been repainted yet. US Coast Guard Auxiliary

I have reverted your edit to remove the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary article from the Auxiliary Military Units category. The category was developed precisely for civilian organizations like the USCG Auxiliary. An auxiliary force is a group affiliated with, but not part of, a military or police organization. In some cases, auxiliaries are armed forces operating in the same manner as regular soldiers. Most often, auxiliaries are civilian volunteer components supporting the main police or military force. Map showing Canadian Coast Guard operating regions

I noticed your very nice map File:Canadian Coast Guard Regional Organization.jpg more correctly depicted the operating regions of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, except that the label "Maritimes Region" should be "Scotia Fundy Region". I have linked your map from the Fisheries and Oceans Canada article.

47-foot Motor Lifeboat

Hey, great work on the 47-foot Motor Lifeboat article, and thank you for actually citing solid sources. But in the future, it would be nice if you could include a page title when linking to an outside page; otherwise, it just shows [1], [2], [3], etc. in the references section. Something like Coast Guard bids adieu to 44-foot boat really makes the references section much easier to decipher. You may also be interested in Wikipedia:Citation_templates, which documents the various cite templates that make it easy to add automatically-formatted MLA-style citations. Personally, I have that page bookmarked and I write out 99% of my references like that (though I may only fill in a few of the fields), but I know that not everyone likes to do that. I was just trying to give a sense... probably the best solution will be to re-organize the Italian Army template like the Belgian Army... who have two OF-2 epaulettes side by side. Sorry I was so vague. I was referring to your changes to lower-case - all the other templates match how it was before you changed it. I'm not sure if it matters - I was just pointing out that it's now inconsistent.

Ok, Thank you for your help ^_^ ...now about the lower-case, its an Italian grammar rules, all titles (obviously written in Italian language) like the Nobilities ones, political charges, onorific, ecclesial, military ranks etc. must be written with the lower-case even if they are the starting words or they appear after a full stop. This is a very common mistake, in example, dott. Nicola Romani is correct, Dott. Nicola Romani is wrong. If you want I can cite you 2 references:

Re:Midshipman and its etymology

Interesting find but that journal unfortunately isn't all that useful since all we can see is a snippet; I'm not that sure what they are talking about without more context. I found a book which defines Mesonaut as the galley slave on the middle bench or the middle bench of a galley - that certainly is not a officer candidate! [2] Mesonauta is a kind of fish as well.

I would be interested to find out more about how pre-19th century Italian navies such as Venice trained their officers.

• Re:Check this out, the question is not about the duty of "officer candidate" but the very first origin of the term. Very interesting - this is exactly the kind of research the OED is useful for but it doesn't mention mesonauta with midshipman; also, the various sources I used didn't mention 'mesonauta' so its probably unrelated. I can look for some sources in our library for Roman Naval ranks and maybe write a Mesonauta article. Also, I work with someone who has a colleague on the Perseus project that might know more (but its unlikely they would know the answer - this is kind of obscure stuff).

• I should clarify what I meant about Italian navies - since most nations with navies had some kind of monarchy the officers derived their authority from the King but Venice and Genoa were republics and had navies, the Papal states had the pope and some kind of navy, so I thought they would have used different titles than Guardiamarina. And failed WP:NFCC#3 for minimal usage. An image must meet every one of the 10 NFC criteria. If an image fails to meet the requirement then it must be removed. See Wikipedia:NFC#Enforcement. File:UK-Army-OF1b.gif and File:UK-Army-OF1a.gif are both used, however if you display one the other can be replaced with text thus failing NFC#1. unilateral moves in non-English wikipedias

Hello, I would like to ask you to not move pages in non-English wikis without consulting any of the editors there! Moves like i.e. this [3] violate the wiki-rule that the name most common in a language should be used as article name! I do not see any discussion about the most common name before you initiated the move, therefore I am led to assume you moved it on your personal POV. Also the move reason you gave is erroneous: "Dél-Tirol is just an historical region upon in a time belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire" - South Tyrol is not a historical region! South Tyrol only became a common used term AFTER the Italian annexation of the Southern half of the County of Tyrol! and is today the most common used name for the area in most languages. In short: please refrain from doing contentious unilateral moves in non-English wikipedias; first inform yourself on that specific wikipedias geographic names convention and second please initiate a discussion on the topic before moving. US Navy/Coast Guard Warrant Officer insignia

I have re-oriented all the images of the series and added stars and stripes on the shield. However, for the US Coast Guard insignia, it appears most representations of them simply use a dark blue colour. As seen in here: File:Leavitt 2010.jpg, it appears the uniform is actually a dark (but not very dark to the point of near-black) blue colour. Most computer-image representations of the insignia are of a colour similar to that, so I simply used the colour that's used on the images at the US Coast Guard website: http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg3/cg3pcx/training/org/rank.asp as I don't see any website with computer-generated insignia depicting the colour as a near-black kind of blue, as per the colours you recommended. Ranks and Insignia of NATO templates

Hi, I see you are rather involved with the template series. I am the original creator of these template and article series from about half a decade ago. I am pleased to see that there are people aside from me that give great care to these templates and articles.

The original intention of the templates were to compare NATO ranks only but the use of the templates have increased. Italian Army ranks for example features the template outside of the templates original intention. Also the STANAG itself has been updated at least once since. Since the use of the template has increased I am thinking of renaming all "Ranks and Insignia of NATO" templates to "Ranks and Insignia" dropping the "of NATO" to expand its use to non-NATO countries and beyond. I also intend to generalize the template so that it is more robust and less complicated to use.

I am thinking of a vertical style rather than horizontal.so that it is top towards bottom rather than sideways.

Would you have objections to any of this?

I should agree with keeping the templates but do not agree with making single countries warrant officer page (ok, I do not agree with the English name "warrant officer" e.g. --> Warrant officer (Italy) simply because they are called Marshals (marescialli) and often confused and mistranslated as "warrant officers" probably due the comparisons among the ranks of the Italian and the British Armed Forces. By the way, as you probably know, Marshals in France and Germany are the highest ranks for generals, the NATO system is correct but the U.S. warrant officer are member of a special category who came from the NCOs. In Italy until 10 years ago, before the reformation was also possible to join the "officer" status for NCOs (ok, is still possible in a different way) but American warrant officer are the solely WO wich have a special status among the NATO countries cause they are not exactly officer (cause they don't receive a commission), and not longer NCOs. So we have always to remember that systems among countries are different and sometimes, someone is misunderstanding the fact that "comparison" is a thing, "translation" is another thing, just to be clear, let me remember the English translation of some naval ranks during the "age of sail" e.g. "ship-of-the-line captain" for the French "capitaine de vaisseau", or "ensign" for the Hungarian "zászló" (that as you know, for English speaking people is an officer, to the Hungarians they are member of zászlós category). --Nicola Romani (talk) 15:18, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

If you have a different name, that is by all means fine by me. I do not really mind it being labeled either way. :)

Warrant officers are a special rank that ranks above NCOs and below officers (and have some officer privileges) which is why they are special. Indeed system of countries differ significantly but I think a page could compare these ranks to show how they are different from each other. Each countries rank could indeed have a separate article explaining the history of the rank and what it does (like how US has a seperate article). I just put the templates in the main article page as a place holder to start the sections as writing those takes time.

US Warrant Officers do not really have a special status in NATO as far as I can tell. The rank does not seem to have a NATO equivalence however. I could not find any info on WOs in the STANAG after glancing over it. Is this information written on a specific page? :)

Captain (armed forces)

Just as a matter of academic interest, why did you chose "Captain (armed forces)" as the rename target?

Are you asserting that a Navy is not part of an Armed Force? If so, why?
If not, then if you are not already aware of the fact that a Navy Captain is a NATO OF-5 level rank, then please educate yourself. Then, please tell me why the ambiguous "Captain (armed forces)" is a better choice than the unambiguous "Captain (OF-2)"?

Before you moved the page, did you discuss the matter anywhere? Did you seek consensus? Did you read any of the discussions that lead to the consensus that lead to the page being named "Captain (OF-2)"?

And while I'm at it, OF-2 is NOT just "a NATO STANAG code for rank comparisons among NATO member countries armed forces". Thankyou for correcting my extremely limited Italian on Naufragio della London Valour! I recently created the English article SS London Valour and simply copied a few key technical details from it to the Italian article. If either article can be used further to improve the verifiable content of the other, please feel welcome to do so!

I recently created two other articles on British merchant ships that have an Italian interest: RMS Nova Scotia and SS Shuntien. If you were willing to either translate them or post translation requests on Italian Wikipedia I would be most grateful. There are books about RMS Nova Scotia that are published only in Italian. It should be possible to use them as sources to create a fuller and more accurate article about her.

Canadian naval ensign

Hi there! Canada just changed its naval ensign replacing the previous Canadian flag with the former naval jack (white ensign style). So now, what about the Auxilary fleet naval ensign? are they going to replace in the sam manner the Canadian flag whit the blue ensign still used as Jack? You argue that Hare Island is "the most used and common name". Can you provide any data supporting your claim? I think that we should discuss your revert for a number of reasons:

1) "Zayachy Island" is used in respected established encyclopedias (e.g. Encyclopedia Britannica); 2) the Russian name avoids confusion with other islands known as Hare Island (of which there are many); 3) there is a difference between "common usage" in online resources and common usage in the real world/academic resources (for instance, many online resources containing the variant "Hare Island" might have been linked to or borrowed material from the Wikipedia article titled "Hare island" giving the impression that this name is more common); the Wikipedia naming conventions say that "Search-engine hits are generally considered unreliable for testing whether one term is more common than another, but can suggest that no single term is predominant in English" and that "Counts over 1,000 are usually estimates, and may be extremely inaccurate". These guideline also recommend that reliable works of general reference in English should be consulted. Here is a link to a BBC article and a Britannica entry mentioning the island. 4) it is always a good idea to discuss edits by established Wikipedia users before reverting them.
