Recent changes

  • Some articles have tables that can be sorted in different ways. For example a list of countries can be sorted alphabetically but you can click on the size column to sort them by size. If you clicked on the column a second time it would sort the countries from the bottom to the top instead. A third click will now take you back to the original sorting. [1]
  • Self-closed tags now work as in the HTML5 specifications. This means you should stop using some of them. <b/> is an example of a self-closed tag that won't work. area, base, br, col, embed, hr, img, input, keygen, link, meta, param, source, track, wbr can be self-closed. Pages with tags that should not be self-closed have been listed in a tracking category since 2016. They will be listed in Special:LintErrors/self-closed-tag. This doesn't affect <references /> or <ref />. [2]
  • There is a banner called WikidataPageBanner. It is for example used by the Wikivoyages, Wikimedia Russia and the Catalan, Basque, Galician and Turkish Wikipedias. It will now been seen by mobile visitors too. Before this it was only seen on desktop. The wikis should update instructions on MediaWiki:Sitenotice so that editors know to test and style for mobile too. [3][4]

  • Advanced item You can now edit MassMessage descriptions through the API. This is useful for tools and gadgets. [5]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 June. It will be on all wikis from 11 June (calendar).

Delsort

Thanks - I'll try to bear that in mind. Twinkle encourages you to select deletion sorting categories when nominating - I've never actually looked at the page, or seen that notice. @Girth Summit: People have been catching on since I've been patrolling the page a bit here and there. The People delsort page is essentially for misc. biographical entries that don't fit into other biographical delsort categories. It's been that way for years. Recent changes

  • Advanced item Toolforge hosts several tools created by the Wikimedia community like edit counters or enhanced editors. It is changing the domain from tools.wmflabs.org to toolforge.org. The routing scheme is moving from tools.wmflabs.org/toolname to toolname.toolforge.org. You can read the details. Tools that use OAuth will have to be updated to keep working. You can ask for help.

Problems

  • There is a Wikidata item link in the sidebar on many pages. This disappeared for a couple of days for users who have the Monobook skin. This was because of a bug. It has now been fixed. [7]
  • Editing, logging in and logging out didn't work properly for a short period of time last week. It was soon fixed. [8]

Changes later this week

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 June. It will be on all wikis from 18 June (calendar).

Future changes

  • Advanced item Pywikibot is a Python library to automate work on wikis. It will not support Python 2 after the new version in July. Support for Python 3.4 and MediaWiki below 1.19 will also be dropped. You should migrate to Python 3. You can ask for help. [9]
  • The selectors .menu and .vectorMenu will no longer work in the Vector skin. This can affect gadgets and user scripts. .menu should be replaced by ul. .vectorMenu should be replaced by .vector-menu. [10]

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Problems

  • There are some new tools to make it easier for newcomers to start editing. They are available on some wikis. These wikis had a problem with the visual editor for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug in the new tools. It was soon fixed. [11]
  • Advanced item Some user scripts and gadgets stopped working because of a change to CSS selectors. .vectorTabs should be replaced with .vector-menu-tabs to fix this. [12]

  • The developers are working on a new interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. This will be released on 24 June. You can give feedback. [13]

Deletion sorting

I just clicked the dropdown in Twinkle when I filed the AfD. I didn't edit that page directly, nor did I read it. The people who care about this sort of thing should feel free to categorize it further without feeling the need to offer a lecture. – bradv🍁 23:23, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Bradv: The edit summary I left is just a standard c/p that I use when removing unnecessary entries from the People delsort page. Wasn't meant to come across as any sort of lecture. It seems best to explain why the reversion was performed, rather than simply reverting with no edit summary. Regarding Twinkle, there is a discussion occurring regarding this matter at Wikipedia talk:Twinkle § Deletion sorting notice, which will hopefully lead to the People delsort page becoming more organized and used for what it is actually intended to be used for. Delsort

Hi. Thanks for pointing out not to use the People delsort. Additionally, per advice on the page you linked in your edit summary, Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/People, which says "Actors and filmmakers (generally excluding adult film performers)", I also removed the actors delsort and added the pornography one instead. You restored the actors delsort here. Since the two individuals I started an AfD on have no actor contributions outside of pornography, I presume they're not exempt from the 'generally' not to add to actors. Am I mistaken here? Declined deletion of Draft/Spider roll

I nominated Draft/Spider roll for {{db-a10}} deletion because it was a clear attempt by Cookieminicatt to recreate the edits that have been reverted at Spider roll. Problems

  • Everyone was logged out. This was because a few users saw the wikis as if they were logged in to someone else's account. The problem should be fixed now. [15]
  • Some readers didn't see new edits to pages. If the page had been recently changed they saw an older version of the page instead. This only affected readers who were logged out. It lasted for ten days. It has been fixed. [16]

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 July. It will be on all wikis from 1 July (calendar).

Future changes

  • The Modern and Monobook skins use the ID searchGoButton for the go button. This is searchButton for Vector. To have the same ID for all skins it will change to searchButton in Monobook and Modern too. This will affect gadgets and user scripts. It will happen on 23 July. They should be updated to use searchButton. You can read more and see a list of affected scripts.

  • Following the banning of an editor by the WMF last year, the Arbitration Committee resolved to hold an RfC regarding on-wiki harassment. The RfC has been posted at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Anti-harassment RfC and is open to comments from the community.
  • The Medicine case was closed, with a remedy authorizing standard discretionary sanctions for all discussions about pharmaceutical drug prices and pricing and for edits adding, changing, or removing pharmaceutical drug prices or pricing from articles.

With respect to this edit summary: people who (like me) use Twinkle to put articles into deletion categories never see the deletion sorting pages, so never have the opportunity to read any instructions there. European Union Delsort

I saw European Movement in Finland in AfD and wondered if a delsort for the European Union may be worthwhile at this point? The EU is a large, and quickly expanding, project. In the same way that the United States of America has its own delsort, as does each state. It could contain articles relevant to anything on an EU-wide level (which is a lot of Europe these days), organisations, politics/politicians, laws, etc. ProcrasinatingReader (talk) 18:22, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Why relist this? There's 3 keeps, and evidence that they meet GNG, including a 2-page in-depth features in the largest paper in the country.   • Hi @Nfitz: At the time of relisting, the discussion was already leaning toward a keep result, but I felt that more input would be optimal for a true consensus to be formed. Note that AfD discussions are not closed based upon a vote count, and that the nomination for deletion is also considered as a delete !vote in and of itself. You state here that there was a solitary delete !vote, but this is actually not the case. Regardless, I have since closed the discussion with a keep result, in part per additional input the discussion received from another user after the relisting.   • The iOS Wikipedia app developers are thinking about new experimental tools. If you use an iPhone you can help them by answering the survey.
  • Some rules for user signatures will soon be enforced. Lint errors and invalid HTML will no longer be allowed in user signatures. Nested substitution will not be allowed. A link to your user page, user talk page or user contributions will be required. You can check if your signature works with the new rules. This is because the signatures can cause problems for tools or other text on the page.

  • Hi Rostadia2012: What is needed to demonstrate notability per Wikipedia's notability standards is to provide coverage in reliable news sources, books, research papers, etc. that are independent of the subject and also provide significant coverage. If such sources are available, you can provide them in the deletion discussions and also add them to the articles if you'd like. At a minimum, if said sources exist, it is advisable to provide them at the deletion discussions, so other users can consider them. Hope this helps out. North America1000 19:07, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Speedy renom

Hi, You closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dajjal: The Slayer and His Followers stating non-consensus and speedy re-nomination. What is speedy renomination exactly and how do I go about it? Also, I'd like to note that only persons commenting on the AfD were a new accounts created exactly for opposing it (though didn't vote weirdly enough) and most likely belonging to the same sock farm that created other, now deleted, similar hoax articles.

You also cited a Rotten Tomatoes page as being a claim to the film's existence, that isn't true, companies can list their films on Rotten Tomatoes regardless of release. Which is exactly what this sock farm and company has done they create "trailers" and movie listing on film databases/trackers to generate media buzz for their company and its owner which is picked up by news websites/blogs (as is the case with the Medium blog cited in your closure). Complete films are never released/exist and none of the hoax films including this one have reviews anywhere let one on WP:RS sources or even local newspapers.

If you can re-evaluate your close that would be great, multiple users have already gone through the hassle of nominating these hoax and promotional articles by the sock farm for deletion again and again. Gotitbro (talk) 14:52, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

  • @Gotitbro: The no prejudice against speedy renomination is just a simple addition stating that the closer of the discussion is okay with the article being immediately renominated for deletion, if desired. At times, Wikipedians consider it disruptive for an article to be renominated for deletion right after a deletion discussion is closed. The WP:NPASR addendum simply serves to enable the speedy renomination of the article with no prejudice from the closer for doing so. Regarding the rest of your message above, I took a cursory look at the Rotten Tomatoes site and wasn't aware that just anyone could upload anything there, but I'm a novice to the site. You seem to know a lot more about it than I do. If you suspect socking from any users that have edited the article, you should read and follow the instructions at WP:SPI to request an investigation. The user that created the article was already blocked indefinitely, and the master socking account behind the blocked user account was blocked for a week back in June 2018 for doing so (link). Johannes Korndörfer

I am unhappy about the deletion, and close of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Johannes Korndörfer. Between nomination and deletion, sources were added to the article. I didn't know about "soft deletion" small print, never looked there. The person is mentioned in articles. Why shouldn't we have a little article about him, rather than sending readers to the German Wikipedia, Johannes Korndörfer? His efforts to teach youngsters composition are laudable. Can you perhaps unceremoniously come to a better close? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:07, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

  • Hi @Gerda Arendt: Since I closed the discussion as soft delete, the article can be restored upon your request. It sounds like you would like for it to simply be restored. So, just let me know if you'd like the article restored, and I will do so, per WP:SOFTDELETE. Since you mentioned here the notion of coming to a "better close", another option is for me to restore the article and then re-open the deletion dicussion, where you can provide your input. This isn't necessary, though, because the discussion has already been closed, but if you would prefer this, it can be accommodated as well.
Regarding the discussion closure itself, there was nothing erroneous about it. Relative to the deletion process, the article fully qualified for soft deletion, essentially existing in the state of an expired prod. Nobody other than the nominator commented at the Afd discussion, and in the future you should consider contributing to the AfD discussion if you feel that the article should be retained, and explain why. Regarding transcluding the new Archive index page, personally, I would just leave the Archive section on the main project page as-is, with the two sentences that are there linking to the most current archive and the basic overview regarding archiving entries over one year old. The main project page is already plenty long, and since the tab at Wikipedia:Cleanup/Tabbed header now links to the new Archive page you created at Wikipedia:Cleanup/Archives, people can find it pretty easily. That's just me, though. I feel that when project pages get to be too long, people may skim over the content without reading it: tldr. @PJvanMill: The noinclude markup does the opposite, preventing transclusion. I placed the tabbed header within the noinclude markup, so it would not repeat itself downward on the page, which was occurring when I initially added it atop the new Archive index page. Template:Digital clock and date

Hi, Northamerica1000, hope that you will be fine. A template you created Template:Digital clock and date has a problem that it doesn't work for any other UTC. It has only USA time. I also want to use this template but the problem is that I can't select my time zone. Can you add a parameter of time zone or UTC in it? So, that it can be used by all users. Thank you. @Empire AS and Certes: I believe I have solved the matter. I have updated the page to include information about how to set the clock. This information is located at the "Usage" section of the Template:Digital clock and date page. Upon testing it out a bit, it appears to be working correctly. @Northamerica1000, It has no parameter of offset or UTC and its default time is USA. It still doesn't work. You can check it here on my UBXs here. To set the clock, you first have to paste {{subst:Template:Digital clock and date}}, and then edit the page according to the updated instructions Here. In the first instance on your page, the wiki markup you added, "{{Digital clock and date|offset=+5}}" will not work. Again, you need to please follow the updated instructions and substitute the template first. Notice how on the second template on your page where I added "offset=+5" to the template AFTER it was substituted (See this diff), it is matching the clock that you have below it. Problems

  • Everyone was logged out a couple of weeks ago to fix a security problem. The problem was not entirely fixed. Because of this everyone was logged out once again last week. [20][21]

  • Wikis that are not for one specific language can translate pages. Sometimes parts of translations are outdated or missing. Outdated translations are marked with a pink background. Missing translations will also be marked in the future. This markup can sometimes break things. It can soon be disabled by using <translate nowrap></translate> on the source page. [22]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 July. It will be on all wikis from 16 July (calendar).

Recent changes

  • A temporary fix helped wikis make their main pages more mobile friendly. This was in 2012. It has not been recommended since 2017. The mobile main page special casing stopped working 14 July. 60 wikis now have main pages that don't work well on mobile. You can see which ones, how to fix it and how to get help in Phabricator. This is the same problem that was reported in Tech News 2020/24 and 2020/26.

Problems

  • There is a problem with the interlanguage links. The interlanguage links are the links that help you find a specific page in a different language. The sorting is broken. The developers are working on a solution. [27]
  • Some users keep getting the notifications for the same event. Some of these are old events. [28]
  • Some users have trouble logging in. This is probably a browser cookie problem. The developers are working on understanding the problem. If you have trouble logging in you can see the details on Phabricator. [29]

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 July. It will be on all wikis from 23 July (calendar).

  • There is a Printable version link. This will disappear. That is because web browsers today can create a printable version or show how it will look in print anyway. [30]

  • The Starter kit is now available for wiki communities. This page lists technical resources, tools, and recommendations. These are essential to operate a wiki project. This is mostly useful for smaller wikis where the community has limited experience with this. [31]
  • The first features of the Desktop Improvements project are available for logged-in users on all wikis. In order to use them, uncheck Use Legacy Vector in your local or global preferences in section Skin preferences. More improvements are planned. Feedback is welcome.
  • Advanced item On multiple wikis, a UTCLiveClock gadget is available. For wikis that import the gadget directly from mediawiki.org, end users can now choose a different timezone to show instead of UTC.

  • Advanced item The deployment train for MediaWiki has been blocked this week. [32][33]

Problems

  • All queries to the Wikidata Query Service failed between 17:50 and 17:59 UTC on Thursday 23 July. Some queries failed during a longer period. [36]
  • Interlanguage links were ordered incorrectly for the past few weeks. This problem was also mentioned in Tech News two weeks ago. The problem is now fixed. [37]
  • There is a problem with the global preferences for the "Use Legacy Vector" option. Developers are working on fixing it. [38]
  • A bug in the Wikibase extension had disabled the "move" and "create" types of protection in the main (Gallery) namespace on Wikimedia Commons. New protections could not be added, and existing protections were not enforced, allowing some page moves and page creations that should not have been possible. This has now been fixed. [39]

Changes later this week

  • The video player will change to be simpler and more modern. This week, the current beta feature will become the video player for everyone on most non-Wikipedia wikis. The old player will be removed. [40]
  • Users' global.js and global.css pages will now also be loaded on the mobile site. You can read documentation for how to avoid applying styles to the mobile skin. [41]
  • Advanced item In the MonoBook skin, the searchGoButton identifier is now searchButton. This may affect CSS and JS gadgets. Migration instructions can be found in T255953. This was previously mentioned in issue 27.
  • Advanced item Bot operators can use Pywikibot to regularly archive discussions. The behavior when the bot uses counter to prevent large archives was changed. [42]
