Recent changes

  • EventStreams is a new way to show activity on Wikimedia wikis. For now it works with the recent changes feed. It will do more things later. It will replace RCStream. Tools that use RCStream should move to EventStreams before 7 July. [1]

Problems

  • The Firefox add-on Firefogg can cause problems with the Upload Wizard. This will not be fixed, because Firefox will not support Firefogg in the future. The Upload Wizard will no longer work with Firefogg. [2]
  • Tool Labs and Wikimedia Labs databases will be under maintenance on 15 February. This will start at 17:00 (UTC) and last for about six hours. Some tools could have problems during or after this. [3]

Changes this week

  • The TwoColConflict extension is a new way to solve edit conflicts. It makes it easier to copy and paste the relevant text to the text field. It will come to Meta and German Wikipedia this week. It is already available on MediaWiki.org. It will come to more wikis later. [4]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 February. It will be on all wikis from 16 February (calendar).

Meetings

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 14 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • Page Previews will be turned on for logged-out users on the Catalan, Greek, Russian, and Italian Wikipedias in the middle of February. Page Previews shows readers a short part of a linked article when they rest their mouse pointer on the link. This is to help them understand what it is about without leaving the article they are reading. Page Previews used to be called Hovercards. It will come to more wikis later this spring. [5]
  • The Developer Wishlist is a list where developers prioritize tools they need. The voting closes at 14 February 23:59 (UTC). This process is only for developers.

DYK template?

Is there a DYK checklist for reviewers somewhere? I just reviewed one and the one about We're Going on a Bear Hunt caught my eye, but the idea of constructing another free-form review is making me think twice. (I guess that I don't really want a template, which implies a list of parameters to figure out, but a list of things to mention would be handy.) (Please {{ping}} me; my watchlist is hopeless.)   • Ensure the article is long enough (at least 1,500 characters of prose, ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables etc.) and new enough (no more than seven days old)
  • Ensure a QPQ review has been done if one is required (required for users with over 5 DYK nominations)
  • Make sure all non-lead paragraphs have inline citations
  • Perform a check for potential copyright infringement. Earwig's Copyvio Detector is functional for this, and copying phrases/sentences from the submission article into a search engine can also reveal potential copyright infringement
  • Ensure that hook content is verified with a citation to a reliable source in the article, at the end of the sentence stating the information

Mayorkun

Good day North America, I have explained why this article Mayorkun should not be speedy deleted. I think my explanation is very clear , The article was mistakely deleted because a suckpupet editor voted deleted and it was only one vote which was the sockpuppet and have been blocked. As for the citeria it passes its citeria because the article was accepted by a submission before it was deleted--Donald422 (talk) 08:48, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

Speedy keeping the article on Layout engine nominated for deletion

Hi, you closed a nomination for deletion with speedy keep as a result, indicating that I didn't present a valid rationale for the deletion of the article and referring to some valid reasons in WP:DEL-REASON. For my understanding, could you please clarify this? Doesn't reason no. 7 in the list apply? ("Articles for which thorough attempts to find reliable sources to verify them have failed") Or are you saying that there haven't been any such "thorough attempts" yet, and that, as a consequence, articles without sources and without "thorough attempts" to provide any are to be kept in Wikipedia regardless of their age? --Kellerpm (talk) 14:18, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Kellerpm: The deletion rationale you provided did not state anything about source searching. It's verbatim rationale was "Article cites no sources whatsoever since at least September 2015". From the rationale presented, there was no way of knowing whether or not you searched for sources, and per WP:NEXIST, topic notability is not based upon the state of sourcing in articles. Feel free to renominate the article for deletion if you'd like, but I'd recommend stating that the topic does not meet notability guidelines, if you feel it does not. Regarding the notion of unsourced articles being retained regardless of their age, check out WP:NOEFFORT for some opinion information about why said articles are not automatically deleted. Please do not modify it." notice atop the closed AfD discussion page, if you'd like, you can add your new commentary there. I'm all right with that in this instance. If you do so, I request that you include a link in diff form to this discussion here so others will have a point of reference regarding the addition (e.g. you could state: Post-closure comment (allowed per discussion at [diff to this discussion])) You can also add your rationale to the article's talk page, or even the talk page of the deletion discussion, although it's unlikely that anyone will see the latter option.
I can also re-open the deletion discussion for you to change your post, but even if your rationale for retention is very strong, some of the other keep !votes are a bit weak in the discussion ("Keep. As explained above", essentially a WP:PERNOM rationale and "Keep. Plenty of reliable sources", but no reliable sources were presented to qualify the stance), so the overall outcome would likely remain as no consensus, relative to the strengths of the overall arguments presented within the entire discussion (I don't base my AfD closures upon a simple !vote count). Some of the delete !votes could also be interpreted as a bit limited, such as basing notability only upon whether or not museum collections or major art reviews are available and commentary such as "All the red links makes be suspicious". Hello everyone, and welcome to the February 2017 GOCE newsletter. The Guild has been busy since the last time your coordinators sent out a newsletter!

December blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 December; the themes were Requests and eliminating the November 2015 backlog. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine editors completed 29 articles. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all who took part.

January drive: The January drive was a great success. We set out to remove December 2015 and January and February 2016 from our backlog (195 articles), and by 22 January we had cleared those and had to add a third month (March 2016). At the end of the month we had almost cleared out that last month as well, for a total of 180 old articles removed from the backlog! We reduced our overall backlog by 337 articles, to a low of 1,465 articles, our second-lowest month-end total ever. We also handled all of the remaining requests from December 2016. Officially, 19 editors recorded 337 copy edits (over 679,000 words).

February blitz: The one-week February blitz, focusing on the remaining March 2016 backlog and January 2017 requests, ran from 12 to 18 February. Seven editors reduced the total in those two backlog segments from 32 to 10 articles, leaving us in good shape going in to the March drive.

Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 stepped aside as lead coordinator, remaining as coordinator and allowing Miniapolis to be the lead, and Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators. Thanks to all who participated!

Speaking of coordinators, congratulations to Jonesey95 on their well-deserved induction into the Guild of Copy Editors Hall of Fame. The plaque reads: "For dedicated service as lead coordinator (2014, 1 July – 31 December 2015 and all of 2016) and coordinator (1 January – 30 June 2015 and 1 January – 30 June 2017); exceptional template-creation work (considerably streamlining project administration), and their emphasis on keeping the GOCE a drama-free zone."

  • There has been a problem where the CSS of gadgets has been loading twice. The Gadgets extension has two new options: type and peers. The type option solves this problem. You can use peers to create gadgets with more than one style module. Read more about type and peers. [8]
  • OAuth will handle blocked users in a more consistent way. [9]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 February. It will be on all wikis from 23 February (calendar).

  • On 22 February the wikipedia.org portal did not work for an hour. This was because of a problem with a JavaScript file. [10]

  • You will be able to use <chem> to write chemical formulas in the visual editor. Previously this only worked in the wikitext editor. [11]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 March. It will be on all wikis from 2 March (calendar).

Future changes

  • You can soon upload 3D files to Commons. The file formats are AMF and STL. The plan is for this to work later this week but it could be later. [12]

You know how I feel about content creation and those who create it. That makes you just about my favourite person around here. You churn out huge amounts of fine content. As for rabbit stew, great article, lousy stew. Have you had it? Rabbit is awful. Maybe they need to be fattened up with corn like cows. And the ubiquitous carrots in that stew? What's that about? Need your help

As I have told you earlier, I am not so knowledgeable in addition of content to Wikipedia. So I need your assistance in adding content to Titan Wikipedia Page. In history of the page I saw there are many content deletion and reverting of content to old version so i don't want that to happen when i am adding the content. The reason why i am interested to updated more the Titan company is that, they are largest and world famous company and brand you would also be knowing about them. Problem with histmerge?

I ran across a very odd diff in the article Last Tribe. I saw that you had done a history merge a couple of months ago, and wondered if some stray bit had escaped the process (which I know nothing about). In the history, I clicked on "prev" to see the diff between the first edit and the second. I immediately noticed that the supposed "first" edit had a link to its previous edit. Of course I clicked on it, to get this diff, complete with vandalism. Besides the obvious, that diff shows the most recent article edit (yours, in 2016) on the left and the oldest edit (by the vandal in 2005) on the right, with "52 intermediate revisions by 31 users not shown".

I have to say, the combination of the screaming vandalism and the reverse diff is one of the craziest things I've seen on Wikipedia. I thought you might want to fix it, or would know who to go to to get it fixed. — Gorthian (talk) 05:03, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Gorthian: First of all, ha ha. I've seen lots of vandalism on Wikipedia, but this actually cracked me up upon seeing the diff you provided. Just ridiculous, but it is a bit clever. In the article's Revision history, the contentious edit appears as the first edit (link). It's unclear how this turns up out of the normative diff chronology, and it's unclear why a previous version diff would even be present linking ahead in time for the first edit in the Revision history. When clicking through the most recent diffs using the Revision history, it doesn't show up at all, yet on that first page, a previous diff is there that links to the page move on 31 December 2016, out of chronology.
The hist merge appears to be in order, because everything is in appropriate chronological order in the Revision history. The vandalism itself does not particularly qualify for revision deletion per the criterion at WP:CFRD, and it may actually be okay in this instance to leave it in place as a strange and uncommon occurrence that could be referenced in the future if similar matters occur. If I were to delete the 20 March 2005 entry per the page's Log page, it would likely correct the matter, but again, it may be okay to just leave this in place as an odd occurrence that could be referenced.
Otherwise, I'm not sure that I want to spend a bunch of time trying to figure out how the diffs are differing in this abnormal manner. The nature of how the vandalism is superimposed atop content of the page (with the wiki-markup used) may have something to do with this, or it may not. North America1000 09:48, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
Previous diffs that link ahead in time
  • More on the mystery reverse diff: I tested out the first version of the page by blanking it entirely and then previewing, and the mystery previous revision diff still shows up, linking to the very same first page, with the vandalism intact (diff). When selecting the "Previous revision" link atop on the page after the blanking and previewing, it goes to this page with different content. I still don't see a flaw in the histmerge that was performed; perhaps this is some sort of unknown glitch in the Wiki software? I could be missing something, too. Recent changes

  • You can now search on English, French, Hebrew and Greek wikis and find words even if you forget the diacritics. It also works if you use diacritics in your search but the wiki doesn't. [15]
  • When you use the mobile view and click on a link to an article in another language you will see that article in the mobile view. Previously it changed to the desktop view. [16]

Problems

  • Some watchlist gadgets didn't work for a period of time last week. This has now been fixed. [17]
  • Admins who click on "mass delete" on a user's Special:Contributions will be taken directly to a list pages created by that user. It has worked like this before, but not lately. [18]

Changes this week

  • The way you switch between wikitext and the visual editors in the desktop view has changed. It is now a drop-down menu. This is the same as in the mobile view. [19]
  • The "flag the edit in the abuse log" checkbox will be removed from the abuse filter interface. This is because the edits are always flagged in the abuse log. [20]

  • A recent query shows that only 16% of administrators on the English Wikipedia have enabled two-factor authentication. If you haven't already enabled it please consider doing so.
  • Cookie blocks should be deployed to the English Wikipedia soon. This will extend the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user after they switch accounts under a new IP.
  • A bot will now automatically place a protection template on protected pages when admins forget to do so.

  • Hi @Corinne: If you'd like, you can compose a message that I can send to project members using mass messaging, which would be sent to users on the project's notifications list. As you stated above, another idea is to create a Wikipedia ad banner, which the project does not presently have (nothing on the templates page). Information about this is at Template:Wikipedia ads.   • Hi @Corinne: With 338 entries currently listed at Wikipedia:Articles for improvement, with one article being selected per week, there are 6.5 years worth of entries. so no worries about running out of content. I don't know if the list has become shorter or not, because I don't feel like going through the page's Revision history and making a bunch of comparisons to content on the present page (working on other matters), and again, there's 6.5 years worth of content now. Changes this week

  • You will be able to show references from <references /> tags in more than one column on your wiki. This is the list of footnotes for the sources in the article. How many columns you see will depend on how big your screen is. On some wikis, some templates already do this. Templates that use <references /> tags will need to be updated, and then later the change can happen for all reference lists. [21][22]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 March. It will be on all wikis from 16 March (calendar).

Meetings

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 14 March at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • Some old web browsers will not be able to use JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis in the future. If you have an old web browser on your computer you can upgrade to a newer version. [23]

Deletion of article on Elena Levon

Hi, I see you were the admin who acted to delete the article Elena Levon. I don't know how I missed the deletion discussion, but somehow I did. Anyhow, I am asking you to reconsider the decision in light of these three articles written about her loss and recovery of some luggage while traveling in Indonesia in June of last year. Each has a different named author, and each is specifically about Elena. I grant you that this is not quite the same as having a leading role in an academy award winning film, but I think it provides evidence of her having sufficient genuine real-world notability, especially in light of WP:BIAS, to warrant an article. Please consider it. Also, please understand that I have never met Elena, do not work for her, and have a long edit history on a wide range of topics other than Hollywood models and starlets— if the article sounded WP:PROMOTIONal, which was mentioned in the deletion discussion, it wasn't because I had any incentive or intention to make it so.   • Hi KDS4444 I don't know. All three of those articles you provided are short, and the press coverage in all three is initially based upon the subject losing her baggage. This could essentially come across to users as a WP:BLP1E matter. Here's a rundown:

  • English-translated page: Based upon losing baggage. Quotes content from the (now deleted) Wikipedia article. Then has four paragraphs of general biographical information, which all appears to be sourced from the subject's personal website [mselenalevontraveling.com
  • Link 2
  • Translated page: The first paragraphs are about the subject losing her baggage. The second three paragraphs essentially consist of the same content in link 1 above, in part quoting content from the subject's personal website.
  • Link 3
  • Translated page: The entire article is based upon the subject losing her luggage, and contains no biographical content other than referring to the subject as a "Hollywood actress".
I don't feel that the subject meets WP:BASIC at this time, nor does it appear that the subject meets WP:NACTOR. The coverage is all based upon the losing of baggage, and otherwise relies upon a primary source (the subject's personal website). I look forward to your comments about my review herein. Fair enough. I suspect the subject's notability will be made more clear with time. My intent in providing these three links was to show that she is in fact notable— so notable that when she loses her luggage in Indonesia, the newspapers report it (personally, I never seem to get that kind of attention whenever I lose my luggage at LAX!). I didn't mean to suggest that these three links constitute the current evidence of her notability but rather that they show she is notable enough to receive this kind of attention (does that make sense?). The frequency with which her name and photos occur on the Internet is another kind of evidence— even though photos, of course, cannot be used to create a Wikipedia article. My thinking was, "Well, if she is being named and photographed in all these contexts, then she looks like she's notable to me." The BLP1E for her lost luggage doesn't quite fit, I don't think: while it was certainly "1E", it was reported in these sources not because she had anything to do with her luggage being lost but because she was notable enough for the loss of her luggage to be reported on by three different newspapers. This is different from being the pilot of the plane that crashed or the owner of the monkey wearing the jacket in the Ikea parking lot— in those contexts, it is the event that made those involved [non-] notable; I am arguing that it is the fact that the event was reported that gives evidence that those whom the reporting was about are likely notable (combined, in this case, with the other widespread visual coverage in reliable sources like the Hollywood Reporter).   • Hi KDS4444 I'm not seeing it, and if the article was recreated with these sources, it would likely be deleted again. The deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Elena Levon received ample input, and it was unanimous that the subject is not notable per Wikipedia's standards at this time. Why do I feel like you always try to twist my arm whenever I raise an objection to one of your nominations? I feel the article does not meet WP:DYKSG#D7. I suggest you add a new section, one sentence at most, to describe some of the uses for banana pasta. You tell me the nomination is approved and to just get on with it. Hi @Yoninah:. You stated at the DYK nom page, "Would you be able to add something about Uses (bread, pizza dough, pasta)?" However, this is a pasta, not a flour. (Are you misreading this to be a flour, rather than a pasta?) Bread and pizza dough is not typically made from pasta. Proposed deletion of Mr. Trash Wheel

Sorry, but I don't understand what makes this article Mr. Trash Wheel notable? Am I missing something? It seems like a brand name to me. Why does it have so many external links but no references? Why does it have this in the lead?: "There is a twitter account here." ?? It's just advertising, isn't it? It's been a stub for quite some time. I really don't see its notability?   • @EMsmile: Update: I moved the Twitter link to the External links section. Please read the articles in the Further reading section; these are news articles that can be used to expand the article. Sure the article is a stub, but I just moved it to main namespace two days ago (diff). However, I recommend removing the iTunes Store and YouTube sources from the article, because they are 1) promotional in nature, and 2) primary sources. Once citations are removed, then people may remove content because it's "not verified", vicious circle — You completely missed my point. There is a citation so the information is cited. I'm trimming overkill citations, but I'm not removing information from being verified. Had I removed the citation at the end of the paragraph, then you would actually have a point. Recent changes

  • The Save page button now says Publish page or Publish changes on the Wikimedia wikis except for Wikipedias and Wikinewses. This change will come to Wikipedias later. The point is to make it more clear that the edit will change the page immediately. Publish page is when you save a new page and Publish changes when you edit an existing page. [27]
  • DMOZ no longer works. Templates that use DMOZ can be redirected to archive.org or another mirror. DMOZ has been removed from the RelatedSites extension on Wikivoyage. [28]
  • You can see monthly page views when you click on Page information in the sidebar. Developers can also get monthly page views through the API. [29]
  • The Linter extension is now on smaller Wikimedia wikis. It helps editors find some wikitext errors so they can be fixed. It will come to other Wikimedia wikis later. The extension will be able to find more errors later. [30]
  • The MediaWiki-Vagrant portable development environment has been updated to use Debian Jessie. This means local development and testing will be more like on the majority of Wikimedia production servers. [31]

Problems

  • On 15 March some interwiki links to other languages were not correctly sorted. This has been fixed. If you still see pages where the interwiki links are not sorted as they should be, they should be fixed automatically with time or you can edit the page and save it without changing anything. If this doesn't work, please report it. [32]

Changes this week

  • When you edit with the visual editor, you will be able to switch the direction you write in from right-to-left to left-to-right as you are editing. This is especially important for editors who edit in languages that write from right to left. You can do this with a tool in the editing menu. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+X on PCs or Cmd+Shift+X on Macs. [33]
