Welcome[edit]

Hello Northernhenge, welcome to Wikipedia, I hope you like the place and stay around. Thank you for your contribution on Ninekirks. You may have noticed that I deleted an earlier version of the article. This was done because you created an outline of headings, but no actual content. Now that you have recreated the article with content under the headings, it looks to be a very nice addition to the project. You might want to consider creating a sandbox as a subpage so that you can work up articles until they are ready and then create the article. This would prevent future deletions of articles in an incomplete state. Once again , Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for contributions. Dsmdgold (talk) 05:15, 25 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Database entry[edit]

Hi there. I'm responding to what you wrote on my user page about the database entry: that it's too much about success in the marketplace. Thanks. I agree! There's also a very unencyclopedic section about database brands. There's some discussion of it already--"unencyclopedic bits"--that you might want to comment on as well there. I'm afraid Wikipedia is becoming like the yellow pages that people are using for self-promotion. --Girl2k (talk) 15:33, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation[edit]

Thanks for your contributions to Carnival (disambiguation)! I just wanted to let you know that, according to standard Wikipedia format, "Each bulleted entry should, in almost every case, have exactly one navigable (blue) link; including more than one link can confuse the reader." (See Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Disambiguation pages.) This applies even when the item has no article of its own - I find those to be the trickiest cases (I sometimes link to both the album and the artist for a song with no article), but generally there should be one link. Even if there are multiple relevant articles, they're most likely linked in the main item's article. These guidelines are often difficult to find, so I thought I'd point this one out for the future. MagnesianPhoenix (talk) 22:12, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I was wondering about that. I should probably have created a page for The Carnival Band, but I didn't get any further than thinking about it! --Northernhenge (talk) 07:38, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, that's no problem, though it looks like you've done a whole lot of good writing just now. Until your article is finished, there's nothing wrong with linking to Maddy Prior and Giles Lewin. It's just things like "dark cabaret" and "marching band" that don't need links. MagnesianPhoenix (talk) 05:59, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Elsecar[edit]

Elsecar is just north of Sheffield. The fully rhotic areas of Yorkshire are only in the areas that border Lancashire, to the west of Halifax and Huddersfield.

The article mentions that there was partial rhoticity in East Yorkshire as well at one point; I think that this has died out now.

I would be surprised if there is any research to suggest that the Sheffield area is rhotic. I personally know that it is not, but then I know that subjective experience is no good for Wikipedia.

Thanks for your interest in the subject. Epa101 (talk) 19:53, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I have added a bit more on the talk page for the subject. I altered the IPAs for Barugh and Derby as well, and have queried whether the notation of rhoticity throughout the article is consistent. Epa101 (talk) 10:34, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Let's hope you get a response. I know what you mean about subjective evidence. I remember many years ago that older people in Southampton were strongly rhotic. When I visit now, I don't hear it much any more. --Northernhenge (talk) 07:52, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice[edit]

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Carlisle's east window[edit]

Wow! Thank you very much for the pics. The point of using the flash is to trick the camera into thinking it has more light than it really has. That way, the colours of the stained glass don't get so bleached out. It depends on the day. Often the best time to photgraph glass is when it's overcast, but then, I'm talking Australia.... not the north of England. It does make a difference.

I have just spent 45 minutes trying to put those two pics into the appropriate Wiki commons categories. Will they go to (Cathedrals in England-Carlisle)? No they blinking well won't! They go to Norman churches in England, Uncategorised churches of Anywhere etc etc etc.... but not to the right place! It's always a bit of a problem when well-meaning people try to categorise English churches as Gothic or Norman.... yes, parts of it ARE Norman but not that bit! Someone seems to have stuffed up some of the cathedral categories, so I'll see if I can find someone with more Wiki-commons skills than I have to fix it!

Meanwhile, your lovely pics need to go ia the article! Amandajm (talk) 13:54, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your kind comments. I did try to photograph the other things you asked for at Talk:Carlisle but my camera's not up to it. Thanks for categorising the pictures. I wasn't sure where to start! --Northernhenge (talk) 13:11, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What speculation ?[edit]

Re: Arthur D. Nicholson -- Schatz's testimony made clear that no verbal warnings were given and no warning shots fired. The situation was not a battlefield; the Soviet soldier started firing and killed Nicholson. Hardly in "hot blood", so why is it a problem to describe the killing as cold-blooded ? In the future, please address such questions on the article's talk page before editing. I have no issue with revisions to the article but would certainly like to see your arguments for the change before it is made. --W. B. Wilson (talk) 19:37, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello W.B.Wilson. The whole article makes the points you make very clear. It seems to me that cold (or hot) blood is a state of mind and although we can speculate on that, and inevitably come to the same conclusion that you did, it is just speculation. On matters of fact that I'm not sure about, I do go to the talk page first, but this wasn't in that category. I don't know whether or not it was in cold blood, but neither does anyone else. I hope that explains my reasoning. --Northernhenge (talk) 19:47, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Northernhenge, this is my dilemma -- with no warning given, the sentry took deliberate aim. He attempted to hit Sergeant Schatz (the bullet passed by his head) and he struck Major Nicholson in the upper abdomen with a second (of three) bullets fired, at a range of some 75 meters. I have to say on the strength of my own experience firing military rifles, that is pretty damned good shooting and indicative of someone who was very much in control of himself while firing. Moreover, the shooter was not surprised by the presence of the Americans; he simply observed them from the cover of the forest, took up position, and opened fire. It is very hard for me to come to any conclusion other than that he shot in cold blood. I understand why in some articles that phrase would be NPOV but I honestly don't believe it applies in this case. Should we move this discussion to the article's talk page ? --W. B. Wilson (talk) 20:01, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've found a solution - put it back in and wikilink it to Premeditation. If that's OK with you, either I'll do it or you do it. Please let me know either way. --Northernhenge (talk) 23:43, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds good. Thank you for the suggestion. Edit has been made. --W. B. Wilson (talk) 04:45, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BMTCi[edit]

Hi left you a message on the disscusion page regarding Penrith, Cumbria. -- —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.42.26.220 (talk) 23:37, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for standardising the spelling in the article, I really should have picked up on that. It may be a long shot, but do you have any good images of the castle? The ones in the article lack a bit of oomph and don't cover all the features. Nev1 (talk) 18:07, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And thanks for all the work you're doing on the article. No photos at present, but I can have a go. Today would have been good with the snow and the sun. --Northernhenge (talk) 23:22, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I thought that this didn't really do the castle justice, so as I had access to a copy of the book I thought I'd have a go expanding it. I'd like to see it on the front page, but one step at a time: the article is a long way from finished and will require a thorough read through afterwards. There are a handful of images, but don't covert all aspects of the castle, for instance there isn't a good one of the keep or the Tower of League. Once the article reaches its full size it will become more obvious that better images are needed. I'm trying to think of a way of boosting the number of people visiting the article as it's usually quite low; this pretty much means shoving links to Brougham in as many articles as possible, but one link in a high profile article could be a big boost. I just hope there's something in the castle's history that would allow me to do that. Nev1 (talk) 20:32, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Advice received[edit]

Some tips for you![edit]

Hi Northernhenge, I thought I'd drop a few notes on your talk page with some help on writing articles :o)

First of all, it may be best for you to do a bit of reading, starting with the Wikipedia manual of style, which will give you a lot of information about how Wikipedia prefers its articles to be written. It's not as hard to follow as it might look; quite a bit of the information there probably won't be vital for you at first.

Second, I recommend you make a user sandbox - which is just an area you can use to practise in, and to make notes in, and to get things ready in. If you click this red link: user:Northernhenge/Sandbox, that will let you create that page (it gives you an edit window to start work in). Anything, anywhere, on the help and information pages which gives you an example, try it out in your sandbox until you're familiar with it.

For your article, the next thing you want to do is start collecting as much information as you can about it. Google searches (particularly in Books and Scholar) will be your best friend for this! Once you've found the information, the next most important thing is to start writing up each fact in your own words (very important, this), and make a note at the same time of exactly where that information came from. Build in the references as you go along; I'm going to copy in, down below this, a whole heap of help on doing references, which was produced by one of our best teachers (Chzz).

Here's another place that you'll find incredibly useful - citation templates which you can copy and paste into your sandbox, between <ref></ref> tags; you just fill in the blanks from your sources into the template, and you'll end up with nicely formatted inline citations :o) It all helps. Remember to add a references section to your sandbox (make a new line, and put ==References== on it, and type {{reflist}} on the next line, so that you can see how your citations look as you do them. Remember to save your page often! You don't want to lose your work.

Hopefully this will give you a good start and make life easier for you. Pesky (talkstalk!) 09:39, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I expect you've left this message because I haven't created many articles. I accept that, but please refer to WP:GNOME for a good description of what I mainly do. --Northernhenge (talk) 18:09, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How references work[edit]

Simple references[edit]

These require two parts;

a)
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>

He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References ==
{{reflist}}

(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)

To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:Northernhenge/reftest and try it out.

Named references[edit]

Chzz was born in 1837. <ref name=MyBook>
"The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009.
</ref>

Chzz lives in Footown.<ref name=MyBook/>

Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.

Citation templates[edit]

You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;

Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation
 | last = Smith
 | first = John
 | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century
 | publication-date = 2001
 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]]
 | page = 125
 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4
}}
</ref>

Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.

For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ThatPeskyCommoner (talkcontribs) 09:39, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Something to make your life easier![edit]

Hi there Northernhenge! I've just come across one of your articles, and noticed that you had to create titles for your url links manually, or were using bare urls as references.

You might want to consider using this tool - it makes your life a whole heap easier, by filling in complete citation templates for your links. All you do is install the script on Special:MyPage/common.js, or or Special:MyPage/vector.js, then paste the bare url (without [...] brackets) between your <ref></ref> tabs, and you'll find a clickable link called Reflinks in your toolbox section of the page (probably in the left hand column). Then click that tool. It does all the rest of the work (provided that you remember to save the page! It doesn't work for everything (particularly often not for pdf documents), but for pretty much anything ending in "htm" or "html" (and with a title) it will do really, really well. Happy editing! Pesky (talkstalk!) 09:39, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I'll have a look. They are a pain to compose!--Northernhenge (talk) 11:10, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There has been some additional discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/ERROL. Perhaps you might want to adjust your opinion in light of the additional information provided there. Cheers, —Ruud 20:37, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I expect the closing admin will find that the deletion arguments are stronger than the keep arguments. The main author of the article has not argued the case well. I still think my own position is weak keep, but I can see that nobody else (apart from the author) has suggested keeping it. The consensus appears to be delete but I've based my own position on my view of the article, not my view of the deletion discussion. I hope that makes sense. Actually, what I can do is add a comment to say that I'm not persuaded to strengthen my position. I'll do that now. --Northernhenge (talk) 22:46, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK. The author concurs that "The discussion has not added any new sources". I've changed my position to delete. --Northernhenge (talk) 23:54, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

ROC categories[edit]

FYI, there is a consequential request here at CFD as a result to the previous move request on ROC universities. Regards. 116.48.183.128 (talk) 15:38, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing it out. I assume that WP:NC-TW must be controversial as otherwise all the renames should be speedied. It's not something I know anything about unfortunately, but I've suggested rename because that's what the naming convention says. --Northernhenge (talk) 20:45, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Could you revisit this?[edit]

See Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2012 February 1#Category:Coastal defense sites. I reexamined the category contents and I think the merge target is now more obvious. Mangoe (talk) 15:58, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mangoe. That's fine by me. I've added a comment to that effect and struck my original suggestion. Coastal defence and fortification is probabaly the best article to directly associate with the category so there is an argument for introducing Category:Coastal defence and fortification but the shorter name has the benefit of being short and already being in existence. --Northernhenge (talk) 22:15, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I just noticed your comment on this article (from June 2010!). I have changed the wording for now, but I think the article needs serious attention, which I will try to give it. Bob1960evens (talk) 15:57, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Republic of China article[edit]

Since you have previously shared your view in a CfD about the Republic of China, I guess you are interested to share your insight at Talk:Republic of China#Requested Move (February 2012) too. Thanks for your attention. 61.18.170.66 (talk) 11:20, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the prompt. I was arguing in the past that WP:NC-TW should be the basis for the decisions being taken, but I have no particular view on what the naming convention actually says. I've only been to the island once and that was many years ago so I can't comment on local sensitivities. I won't be joining in this time, but thanks again for pointing it out. --Northernhenge (talk) 13:55, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is nothing in the article to indicate that the mill is a toll bridge. If you have a source for the proposition that it is a toll bridge, could you please add it to the article? Otherwise it should be removed from the cat (per WP:CAT). If it is a toll bridge, it should be in Category:Toll bridges in England, not Category:Toll bridges in the United Kingdom. --Mhockey (talk) 22:05, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's mentioned in the photo caption "The mill from beside mill pond, with the toll hut in foreground" but I take your point. I'd be very surprised if the toll bridge immediately adjacent to the mill was notable in itself but it does form part of the mill's setting. I read somewhere that before the mill re-opened, the last miller became the toll collector, so there is that connection. I'll see if I can still find the source. --Northernhenge (talk) 22:38, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

BNA access[edit]

Hi. You requested access to a British Newspaper Archive account via The Wikipedia Library a long time ago. I took over responsibilities as the account coordinator and I approved you for an account about a month ago. I still need you to follow the steps indicated on the e-mail I sent you, including submitting your information on the Google doc that e-mail indicates. If I don't have that information by 15 December, I'm going to archive your application with no further action.

If there's been any confusion or crossed-wires about this process, I apologize. I understand your request waited for some time before I e-mailed you. I'm eager to catch-up with the backlog of requests and other editors are waiting for accounts. Chris Troutman (talk) 22:21, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris. I've just completed the form, but I think I already did that in November. It looks familiar. --Northernhenge (talk) 23:33, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Desuspension[edit]

Hi,

I have just noticed that you contributed a lot to write about topology. I have tried to write about desuspension, an opposite operation to suspension (topology). May you review my work? I am not a professional mathematician, but high-profile math has been my passion since my childhood. Cheers!

Lamro (talk) 11:34, 24 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lamro. Thanks for your message. I created Geospatial topology because I needed something like it to link from a Geographic information system article (I can't remember which one) but I only know about the subject in that context. I'm an economist with some geographic leanings but not a mathematician.Sorry I can't help. --Northernhenge (talk) 18:25, 25 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review request[edit]

Hi Northernhenge,

I hope you are doing well in these tough days. Many thanks for editing desuspension. I have written another article on general topology, negative-dimensional space. May I ask you to review it too?

Kind regards, Lamro (talk) 08:55, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lamro. I've added some wikilinks but I don't know anything about this subject. I see that most of your sources are by the same author. It would be better to find some other authors too. You could also try to make your articles easier for non-experts to understand. Best wishes. --Northernhenge (talk) 20:57, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cal Tech[edit]

If the primary reference wasn't titled An oral history ... I think I would agree that it should match the reference. It seems that I need to track down Edward Feigenbaum. No actual Caltech student would spell it wrong! Gah4 (talk) 21:09, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I am trying to track down Edward Feigenbaum, to see what he says about it. We can keep the discussion here, as I have this on my watch list. Thanks, -- Gah4 (talk) 21:20, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
MOS says However, trivial spelling and typographic errors should simply be corrected without comment (for example, correct basicly to basically and harasssment to harassment), unless the slip is textually important. Even so, I will wait until I hear from Feigenbaum, unless you agree that it can be changed. Since the original source is an oral history, one shouldn't expect exact spelling. Gah4 (talk) 22:10, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
"trivial spelling and typographic error" sounds about right. I suggest you change it. Thanks for checking! --Northernhenge (talk) 19:36, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
OK, it is back. No reply from Feigenbaum yet. It seems that after this, Knuth did an oral history of Feigenbaum. (Interesting reading for both.) Also, Feigenbaum went to Carnegie Tech (Not yet Mellon) and might have been used to writing it as two words. But I suspect it was transcribed by someone else, in any case. Thanks! Freshwater Biological Association[edit]

Good gnoming! IMO adding lists of relevant people to short articles like Freshwater Biological Association adds real value for readers. I did the same with Hiking Club of Catalonia, and actually wrote Arino, Mari El Republic as a placeholder for the two notable residents. Narky Blert (talk) 18:54, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the encouragement @Narky Blert: – I was surprised how many FBA scientists had Wikipedia articles and I expect I'll find a few more as I gradually develop the article further hopefully.--Northernhenge (talk) 21:54, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Or, you may find other notable biologists who don't have articles, but should; you picked up two of mine in your edits. Ever heard of Richard Brinsley Hinds? no, me neither, until 5 years ago - but what might have been, had he lived longer. (I specialise in articles which get fewer than 1 view/day.) {{BS-table}} is deprecated, no longer supported, and will be deleted by the end of the summer, at which point any route diagrams that still use it will no longer render. {{BS-map}} is the replacement, but more and more editors are switching to the newer {{Routemap}} syntax. Joseph Jacobs[edit]

Thank you for fixing the problem. But I don't understand the problem. (1) The article wasn't uncategorised in this revision; it was still in Category:Joseph Jacobs. (2) How does the condition of the category, as of this revision, cause problems for other categories? It's quite reasonable for a Joseph Jacobs category to be a subcategory of English Jewish writers, and the issue with his being in both "British Jewish writers" and "English Jews" was a problem with the article already, so I fixed it just now. 120.21.58.66 (talk) 21:17, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There are two different things happening here.
  1. Deciding which categories an article – in this case, Joesph Jacobs – should belong to is a matter for whoever is editing the article, based on WP:CAT, so no problem there at all.
  2. Putting a category (A) – in this case Category:Joseph Jacobs – into another category (B) makes A a subcategory of B. So if you look at Category:English folklorists you’ll see that there is currently one subcat (Category:English folk-song collectors‎) and quite a lot of pages, including Joseph Jacobs and lots of other individuals. All of those individuals are members of the category. If you put Category:Joseph Jacobs into Category:English folklorists then English folklorists now has two subcats – the song collectors and Joseph Jacobs. All the other english folklorists are still members of the category, they’re not not subcategories, so to be consistent you’d need to treat all the english folklorists the same way. You’d need to see if they had eponymous categories and if so, do what you did before. You’d need to keep doing that for every category you moved. Then you’d need to do the same repeatedly (and probably forever!) across the whole of wikipedia. Not good!! :)
Apologies for my lack of clarity at explaining this. You might be better off discussing it in the Teahouse as I have nothing else sensible to contribute here. —Northernhenge (talk) 22:16, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Van Wijngaarden grammar[edit]

I'd much appreciate your review of the present Van Wijngaarden grammar article. I know there are some minor things to be fixed, but is the overall structure and content OK? Suzanna Hamilton[edit]

Can you tell me exactly why you reverted my perfectly acceptible edits, including many reliable sources here[1]? If you have a problem with individual pieces of information then address them. What you don’t do is a blanket reverse without explanation, without the courtesy of either addressing it on my talk page or the article talk page. This is not how Wikipedia functions. I can see another editor has undone your edit. I am interested as to what rationale you would use for this type of edit. Mramoeba (talk) 18:47, 3 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @Mramoeba: I've had a look through the edit history to find what I reverted. On 6 April 2023, you made a number of edits which were reverted by Actualcpscm, who added the edit summary "likely factual errors". I looked at Actualcpscm's edit and noticed it had removed the sources you had added, and the edit summary did not explain the problem. I therefore reverted Actualcpscm's edit (not yours), thus reinstating your edits. In my edit summary, I wrote: "As the previous revert (by Actualpscm) removed quite a few references (added by yourself), it would be better to identify and discuss the “likely factual errors” on the talk page." No such discussion took place. In summary, my reversion reinstated your edits, it did not revert them. Thanks for getting in touch though. If I've misunderstood your complaint, please accept my apologies and explain it to me again. --Northernhenge (talk) 22:07, 3 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I can see I should have addressed this to Actualcpscm and not you. Sincere apologies. Mramoeba (talk) 12:59, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. Enjoy your editing :) --Northernhenge (talk) 19:02, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I was undoing the pointless link by a WP:SOCK. The person created a huge amount of socks, [[2]], to add useless "distinguising" links to articles about confusions that would never happen.
