You may have noticed that I deleted an earlier version of the article. This was done because you created an outline of headings, but no actual content. Now that you have recreated the article with content under the headings, it looks to be a very nice addition to the project. You might want to consider creating a sandbox as a subpage so that you can work up articles until they are ready and then create the article. Hi there. I'm responding to what you wrote on my user page about the database entry: that it's too much about success in the marketplace. Thanks. I agree! There's also a very unencyclopedic section about database brands. There's some discussion of it already--"unencyclopedic bits"--that you might want to comment on as well there. Disambiguation

Thanks for your contributions to Carnival (disambiguation)! I just wanted to let you know that, according to standard Wikipedia format, "Each bulleted entry should, in almost every case, have exactly one navigable (blue) link; including more than one link can confuse the reader." (See Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Disambiguation pages.) This applies even when the item has no article of its own - I find those to be the trickiest cases (I sometimes link to both the album and the artist for a song with no article), but generally there should be one link. Even if there are multiple relevant articles, they're most likely linked in the main item's article. These guidelines are often difficult to find, so I thought I'd point this one out for the future. Oh, that's no problem, though it looks like you've done a whole lot of good writing just now. Until your article is finished, there's nothing wrong with linking to Maddy Prior and Giles Lewin. Elsecar

Elsecar is just north of Sheffield. The fully rhotic areas of Yorkshire are only in the areas that border Lancashire, to the west of Halifax and Huddersfield.

The article mentions that there was partial rhoticity in East Yorkshire as well at one point; I think that this has died out now.

I would be surprised if there is any research to suggest that the Sheffield area is rhotic. I personally know that it is not, but then I know that subjective experience is no good for Wikipedia.

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Carlisle's east window

Wow! Thank you very much for the pics. The point of using the flash is to trick the camera into thinking it has more light than it really has. That way, the colours of the stained glass don't get so bleached out. It depends on the day. Often the best time to photgraph glass is when it's overcast, but then, I'm talking Australia.... not the north of England. It does make a difference.

I have just spent 45 minutes trying to put those two pics into the appropriate Wiki commons categories. Will they go to (Cathedrals in England-Carlisle)? No they blinking well won't! They go to Norman churches in England, Uncategorised churches of Anywhere etc etc etc.... but not to the right place! It's always a bit of a problem when well-meaning people try to categorise English churches as Gothic or Norman.... yes, parts of it ARE Norman but not that bit! Someone seems to have stuffed up some of the cathedral categories, so I'll see if I can find someone with more Wiki-commons skills than I have to fix it!

What speculation ?

Re: Arthur D. Nicholson -- Schatz's testimony made clear that no verbal warnings were given and no warning shots fired. The situation was not a battlefield; the Soviet soldier started firing and killed Nicholson. Hardly in "hot blood", so why is it a problem to describe the killing as cold-blooded ? In the future, please address such questions on the article's talk page before editing. I have no issue with revisions to the article but would certainly like to see your arguments for the change before it is made. --W. B. Wilson (talk) 19:37, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello W.B.Wilson. The whole article makes the points you make very clear. It seems to me that cold (or hot) blood is a state of mind and although we can speculate on that, and inevitably come to the same conclusion that you did, it is just speculation. On matters of fact that I'm not sure about, I do go to the talk page first, but this wasn't in that category. I don't know whether or not it was in cold blood, but neither does anyone else. Northernhenge, this is my dilemma -- with no warning given, the sentry took deliberate aim. He attempted to hit Sergeant Schatz (the bullet passed by his head) and he struck Major Nicholson in the upper abdomen with a second (of three) bullets fired, at a range of some 75 meters. I have to say on the strength of my own experience firing military rifles, that is pretty damned good shooting and indicative of someone who was very much in control of himself while firing. Moreover, the shooter was not surprised by the presence of the Americans; he simply observed them from the cover of the forest, took up position, and opened fire. It is very hard for me to come to any conclusion other than that he shot in cold blood. I understand why in some articles that phrase would be NPOV but I honestly don't believe it applies in this case. Should we move this discussion to the article's talk page ? --W. B. Brougham Castle

Thanks for standardising the spelling in the article, I really should have picked up on that. It may be a long shot, but do you have any good images of the castle? The ones in the article lack a bit of oomph and don't cover all the features. Nev1 (talk) 18:07, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

I thought that this didn't really do the castle justice, so as I had access to a copy of the book I thought I'd have a go expanding it. I'd like to see it on the front page, but one step at a time: the article is a long way from finished and will require a thorough read through afterwards. There are a handful of images, but don't covert all aspects of the castle, for instance there isn't a good one of the keep or the Tower of League. Once the article reaches its full size it will become more obvious that better images are needed. I'm trying to think of a way of boosting the number of people visiting the article as it's usually quite low; this pretty much means shoving links to Brougham in as many articles as possible, but one link in a high profile article could be a big boost. I just hope there's something in the castle's history that would allow me to do that. Nev1 (talk) 20:32, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Some tips for you!

Hi Northernhenge, I thought I'd drop a few notes on your talk page with some help on writing articles :o)

First of all, it may be best for you to do a bit of reading, starting with the Wikipedia manual of style, which will give you a lot of information about how Wikipedia prefers its articles to be written. It's not as hard to follow as it might look; quite a bit of the information there probably won't be vital for you at first.

Second, I recommend you make a user sandbox - which is just an area you can use to practise in, and to make notes in, and to get things ready in. If you click this red link: user:Northernhenge/Sandbox, that will let you create that page (it gives you an edit window to start work in). Anything, anywhere, on the help and information pages which gives you an example, try it out in your sandbox until you're familiar with it.

For your article, the next thing you want to do is start collecting as much information as you can about it. Google searches (particularly in Books and Scholar) will be your best friend for this! Once you've found the information, the next most important thing is to start writing up each fact in your own words (very important, this), and make a note at the same time of exactly where that information came from. Build in the references as you go along; I'm going to copy in, down below this, a whole heap of help on doing references, which was produced by one of our best teachers (Chzz).

Here's another place that you'll find incredibly useful - citation templates which you can copy and paste into your sandbox, between <ref></ref> tags; you just fill in the blanks from your sources into the template, and you'll end up with nicely formatted inline citations :o) It all helps. Remember to add a references section to your sandbox (make a new line, and put ==References== on it, and type {{reflist}} on the next line, so that you can see how your citations look as you do them. Remember to save your page often! You don't want to lose your work.

Something to make your life easier!

Hi there Northernhenge! I've just come across one of your articles, and noticed that you had to create titles for your url links manually, or were using bare urls as references.

You might want to consider using this tool - it makes your life a whole heap easier, by filling in complete citation templates for your links. All you do is install the script on Special:MyPage/common.js, or or Special:MyPage/vector.js, then paste the bare url (without [...] brackets) between your <ref></ref> tabs, and you'll find a clickable link called Reflinks in your toolbox section of the page (probably in the left hand column). Then click that tool. It does all the rest of the work (provided that you remember to save the page! It doesn't work for everything (particularly often not for pdf documents), but for pretty much anything ending in "htm" or "html" (and with a title) it will do really, really well. Happy editing! I expect the closing admin will find that the deletion arguments are stronger than the keep arguments. The main author of the article has not argued the case well. I still think my own position is weak keep, but I can see that nobody else (apart from the author) has suggested keeping it. The consensus appears to be delete but I've based my own position on my view of the article, not my view of the deletion discussion. I hope that makes sense. Actually, what I can do is add a comment to say that I'm not persuaded to strengthen my position. I'll do that now. --Northernhenge (talk) 22:46, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi Mangoe. That's fine by me. I've added a comment to that effect and struck my original suggestion. Coastal defence and fortification is probabaly the best article to directly associate with the category so there is an argument for introducing Category:Coastal defence and fortification but the shorter name has the benefit of being short and already being in existence. --Northernhenge (talk) 22:15, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Eling Tide Mill

There is nothing in the article to indicate that the mill is a toll bridge. If you have a source for the proposition that it is a toll bridge, could you please add it to the article? Otherwise it should be removed from the cat (per WP:CAT). If it is a toll bridge, it should be in Category:Toll bridges in England, not Category:Toll bridges in the United Kingdom. --Mhockey (talk) 22:05, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

It's mentioned in the photo caption "The mill from beside mill pond, with the toll hut in foreground" but I take your point. I'd be very surprised if the toll bridge immediately adjacent to the mill was notable in itself but it does form part of the mill's setting. I read somewhere that before the mill re-opened, the last miller became the toll collector, so there is that connection. OK, it is back. No reply from Feigenbaum yet. It seems that after this, Knuth did an oral history of Feigenbaum. (Interesting reading for both.) Also, Feigenbaum went to Carnegie Tech (Not yet Mellon) and might have been used to writing it as two words. But I suspect it was transcribed by someone else, in any case. Thanks! Joseph Jacobs

Thank you for fixing the problem. But I don't understand the problem. (1) The article wasn't uncategorised in this revision; it was still in Category:Joseph Jacobs. (2) How does the condition of the category, as of this revision, cause problems for other categories? It's quite reasonable for a Joseph Jacobs category to be a subcategory of English Jewish writers, and the issue with his being in both "British Jewish writers" and "English Jews" was a problem with the article already, so I fixed it just now. 120.21.58.66 (talk) 21:17, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

There are two different things happening here.

1. Deciding which categories an article – in this case, Joesph Jacobs – should belong to is a matter for whoever is editing the article, based on WP:CAT, so no problem there at all.
2. Putting a category (A) – in this case Category:Joseph Jacobs – into another category (B) makes A a subcategory of B. So if you look at Category:English folklorists you’ll see that there is currently one subcat (Category:English folk-song collectors‎) and quite a lot of pages, including Joseph Jacobs and lots of other individuals. All of those individuals are members of the category. If you put Category:Joseph Jacobs into Category:English folklorists then English folklorists now has two subcats – the song collectors and Joseph Jacobs. All the other english folklorists are still members of the category, they’re not not subcategories, so to be consistent you’d need to treat all the english folklorists the same way. You’d need to see if they had eponymous categories and if so, do what you did before. You’d need to keep doing that for every category you moved. Then you’d need to do the same repeatedly (and probably forever!) across the whole of wikipedia. Not good!! :)

Can you tell me exactly why you reverted my perfectly acceptible edits, including many reliable sources here[1]? If you have a problem with individual pieces of information then address them. What you don’t do is a blanket reverse without explanation, without the courtesy of either addressing it on my talk page or the article talk page. This is not how Wikipedia functions. Hi, @Mramoeba: I've had a look through the edit history to find what I reverted. On 6 April 2023, you made a number of edits which were reverted by Actualcpscm, who added the edit summary "likely factual errors". I looked at Actualcpscm's edit and noticed it had removed the sources you had added, and the edit summary did not explain the problem. I therefore reverted Actualcpscm's edit (not yours), thus reinstating your edits. In my edit summary, I wrote: "As the previous revert (by Actualpscm) removed quite a few references (added by yourself), it would be better to identify and discuss the “likely factual errors” on the talk page." No such discussion took place. In summary, my reversion reinstated your edits, it did not revert them. Thanks for getting in touch though.
