Archie[edit]

On fr:, Archie Jackson is the first cricket-related Good Article (Bon article). On fr:, an article become a Good Article through a process similar to the one to become a Featured Article (Article de qualité), that is to say a sort of popular vote... you can see the vote here. All-England Eleven[edit]

Hello there, OrangeKnight. Yes, I entirely agree with you. The problem is that Clarke chose a name for his team that was already a generic term and there should be an article specific to his AEE, as it was called, while All-England teams in general should be dealt with by a wider article. All-England teams first appeared in 1739 and I don't know when they finally phased out but it was after Test cricket started.

This All-England article was the first we created but since then there have been others about the UEE, the UNEE and Grace's USEE so we do need to split out the Clarke/Parr team too.

Excellent work. There aren't too many books covering that era and those two will do the job. I've got Harry Altham's history written in the 1920s and that is good too, so I'll add from that at some point. Jackson[edit]

Hi. Here's what Gibson says in "The Cricket Captains of England" (page 91 of my 1989 edition). (He also wrote a book specifically about Jackson, called "Jackson's Year" because the centrepiece is his captaincy of England in 1905. I don't have a copy, but I imagine that second-hand copies shouldn't be too hard to find online.)

Jackson's successful captaincy of Cambridge makes it even odder that he was not chosen, instead of MacLaren, to succeed Grace as the England captain in 1899. Perhaps it was because of an incident in the match of 1893, which engendered many bitter feelings. Cambridge had scored 182, and Oxford were 95-9. The follow-on was then compulsorily imposed if a side was more than 80 runs behind on the first innings. Cambridge did not want to bat last, and Jackson instructed C. M. Wells to bowl wides deliberately, so as to prevent Oxford from following on. As a result of this - and a similar incident in another University match three years later - a bad law was, ultimately, changed; and the follow-on became optional. Why had not one of the last Oxford batsmen thwarted Jackson's plan by knocking down his wicket? Perhaps I may be forgiven for recalling the remark of one long-dead Oxford Blue, who said that only a Cambridge man could ask such a question.

From this distance of time, Jackson's action seems reasonable enough. Nevertheless, it does suggest a toughness of character, a certain ruthlessness behind the genial exterior... He does not seem to have been a particularly popular man, though he was always a deeply respected one. There was also the fact that in the same year (1893), when he was chosen for all three Tests against Australia, Jackson preferred not to play in the last one, because he wanted to play for Yorkshire at Brighton. Yorkshire needed to win that match to make sure of the championship. They won it, and it was their first championship. But even then there were some who questioned his sense of values.

It should, however, always be remembered of the young Jackson that he gave Ranjitsinhji his Blue, a much more controversial thing to do than would seem possible to us now... Jackson had left him out the previous year... and would often comment afterwards, ruefully, about his mistake. I dare say that his experience of India, in one of Hawke's tours in 1892-3, had caused him to revise his views on Indian cricketers and even upon India, a country which he later served as Governor of Bengal. You're very welcome. When/if I have time, some of that could probably usefully be added to Jackson's own article (unless you fancy doing it yourself). Since Lord Hawke was Chairman of the England selectors from 1899 to 1909, it seems unlikely that it was Jackson putting Yorkshire ahead of England that was to blame for his not getting the captaincy in 1899. I noticed on Jhall1's talk-page that you are taking :fr:enchaînement to GA. Have you considered translating it to English and adding it to what we have here? Although my French is dire, I can see (with a little help from Google!) that it looks good and better than most of what is in the article here.
