On a related subject, I don't think I ever really talked about my procedure for restorations, but I always like to start by dealing with the areas with the most damage, because once you go in for the detailed passes it can feel like you're making no progress if you haven't started by defining progress as "fix that crease" or "remove that writing". Which is a long way of saying that I've just finished the initial work and an about to upload the "first draft". Took... Maybe an hour and a half. Florence V. Lucas and Jamaica

Thanks for creating the article for Florence V. Lucas. She was head of the NAACP chapter in Jamaica, Queens, but the sources don't place here as living there. Her obituary in The New York Times places her in Rosedale, Queens. I changed the category in her article and will move her as a notable from the Jamaica article to the one for Rosedale. She's definitely on my long-term list of articles to improve, but I'm not as active as you, I'm afraid. At the moment, I'm working instead on the new article I just stared on Belle Reeves, Washington's first female secretary of state and also a very interesting character. Question for you though: As far as I can tell, photos of lawmakers in the Washington state archives are often not clearly in the public domain. Any tips on how to be sure the rights are in order so I can get them uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and inserted into articles? Thanks! W.stanovsky (talk) 07:09, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
Aha! Good question. Okay, three things:
  • For some mid-20th century women in professions, you can find their college yearbook photo online. If the yearbook was published before 1927, the photos in it are free to use and can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
  • If a photo of the person landed in a federal publication, it might be free to use with the PD-USGov tag. And there were a lot of federal publications in the mid-20th century! For example, I've been working my way through School Life (a publication of the US Department of the Interior) recently. Not every photo in there counts, but many do.
  • If a photo isn't free, it can't be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, but you can sometimes still do a local upload as a fair-use image. It's tricky, but if you have a photo of a deceased person, and the file is under 100Kb, and you really can't find an earlier or free alternative, it may pass as fair-use. That's how I put the photo on Pearl Wanamaker's article. You can use the summary code from that picture as a template.

Dorothy Houston Jacobson

Dorothy Houston Jacobson (November 13, 1907 – July 13, 1985) was an American political scientist and educator, and a co-founder and chair of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party. Born in Herman, Minnesota, she served as Assistant Secretary for International Affairs in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) from 1964 to 1969, during the Johnson administration, and was the first woman to serve in a sub-cabinet position in the USDA. This 1967 photograph depicts Jacobson seated at her desk at the USDA headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Susie Forrest Swift

Hi Penny! I've been working on the biography of Susie Forrest Swift today. She was a Vassar grad, 1883. I've noticed on occasion that you include yearbook photos of Seven Sisters women in some of the articles you've created. Not sure what you are accessing, but if you have time and inclination to find such a photo of Susie Swift, I'd be most appreciative. Yes! But 1883 is a little early for yearbooks with photos. At VC Material on the Web, the Vassar yearbook (the Vassarion) only goes back to 1893. But she might turn up in some of Vassar's alumnae publications? Penny Richards (talk) 16:23, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

I ran across this woman quite by accident, while working on a bio of Elizabeth Wagner Reed, a geneticist and women's scholar. A quick search showed me that WP has a redlink on her here. There appear to be tons of sources on her [1], [2],[3]. Don't know if you are interested in working on her, but I know she fits into your interests and I am way too busy trying to finish Reed and Eunice Foote to work on her right now. I'm rubbish at QPQ too, I tend to find everything I look at is riddled with close paraphrasing. I suggested another possible hook at WiR, "... that Mary Ridge blew up the Liberator on her first encounter with Blake's 7, and killed off the crew on her last?", but on 2nd thoughts it might be deemed in universe? The one you suggested would work too, but for that it would be nice to have an article on "Terminal" as well as "Terminus". I think the only solution with the citation needed bits is to remove them, sadly. They were added by an IP based on the fanblog bio, and are probably correct, but I have failed to source anything other than Ridge was friends with Nathan-Turner before working on DW. It's a shame, as the IP was probably the same as the one that correctly requested undeletion, but I poked around the blog and see no reason to consider it is reliable, and I don't know how to go about entering into a conversation with an IP-hopping anon editor. Will try to re-identify the source for the friendship and deal with the rest this evening. Possibly one could move them to the talk page in case the anon stops by subsequently and can provide sources. They're not a BLP problem as I think all the people involved are now deceased. Dr. Blofeld Not much I can find. This is not a reliable source and gives dates but no places. Name is too common to differentiate without something else in newspaper searches. She married Melvin Walter Weschler. They divorced in 1951 and he married Patti Andrews, of the Andrews Sisters. That's about all I can find. Nothing about her career other than discog lists.
