Although I should say that I read the hook reference as humour, so that it does not strictly support the hook. "Annoyed" might not be the right word either, and one of the thousand DYK rules says that the hook reference may not be self-published. Well, strictly speaking, no ;) The author of the article supporting the hook, is not sufficiently independent of the subject, and the ref is thus not a reliable source. I don't think that is relevant here. It is indisputable that the hook is true: the article exists, she wrote it, and in it she asks Wikipedians to craft the article so that it won't be deleted. It's not like the subject asserted something that we can't otherwise verify, she just "did" something that everyone can verify by simply looking at the NYT article. I also think the hook is fine, not least by IAR. Self-referential statements often do not play along well with rule sets. The rule I was referring to is WP:DYK 3b, where 'reliable source' specifically requests the independence of publisher and author. I suggested this rule, that's why I know ;) IIRC, at the time when you still directly contributed to DYK, this rule was much less strict, allowing for a less reliable hook ref if the rest of the article is properly sourced. --Pgallert (talk) 10:41, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

Not to beat this horse too dead, but 3b does not say anything about independence from publisher and author, unless I somehow missed it. So I am still curious: can you quote the language you are referring to? The definition of reliable source also does not say this. It does say that while "primary sources" (which this is) "can be both reliable and useful in certain situations, they must be used with caution in order to avoid original research." There is no "original research" problem here. We are simply saying that she wrote an article in the NYT and stating that the article says "x", both of which are completely verifiable simply by looking at the article itself online. No, policy discussions are always worthwhile ;) The argument is as follows: WP:IRS requests "reliable, third-party, published sources" and links 'third party' to Wikipedia:Third-party sources. The link target is just an essay but requests "A third-party source is one that is entirely independent of the subject being covered". As the guideline links the essay, it explicitly endorses the essay, that's how I read it. WP:IRS again defines 'source' as any of the following three: the creator, the publisher, and the work itself. It further states that all of the readings of 'source' can negatively affect reliability. This is from where I derive that there is something missing from the independence, and hence the reliability, of this source. Of course not in the conservative, every-day meaning of "reliable": She definitely wrote what she wrote. --Pgallert (talk) 12:38, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

[left] Again, I think you are ignoring the key part of WP:RS here. There is a section there called "Primary, secondary, and tertiary sources", which says, in part that "Primary sources ... can be both reliable and useful in certain situations, they must be used with caution in order to avoid original research. While specific facts may be taken from primary sources, secondary sources that present the same material are preferred." In this case, we are stating facts that are verifiable, on their face, from this primary source (Newman's article), which are that: (1) she wrote the NYT article, (2) the article asks Wikipedians to help craft her WP entry. So the source we are citing is the definitive and 100% reliable source for this information. It would be nice to also cite a secondary source that covers this as "news", but other newpapers are not likely to jump in to discuss this little article by their competitor, the NYT. So, it is not necessary to cite a secondary source in this case because what we are stating, in the words of WP:RS, does not involve "original research". Hi Ssilvers, the guidelines for article writing are more lenient than DYK rules. This was the discussion that was held in 2011 (particularly #5). Already then editors argued about the exact meaning of 3b, but what emerged was that an article only needs to be based on 'sterling' sources, but the hook for DYK needs to exclusively employ those. I'm not suggesting that you change the hook, and there is no question that the NYT supports it, just that if a DYK hardliner comes along the hook will not be okayed. STP BPDU Types

Hi

Regarding the STP BPDU Types : Again, There is no BPDU Type known as "ACK BPDU". You have pointed to page 63 of IEEE 802.1D pdf file. If you take a good look at the whole section 9.3 again, you will see that it defines three types of BPDUs which are (Configuration BPDU , TCN BPDU and RST BPDU), and in section 9.3.4 it defines a way for "Validation of received BPDUs" not a forth type of BPDU ! ACK is a bit in the "flags" field of Configuration BPD and RST BPDU. Also if you take a look at the "Bridge Protocol Data Unit fields" on the same Wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanning_Tree_Protocol#Bridge_Protocol_Data_Unit_fields. You don't see any points to ACK BPDUs at the type field. The possible values for the BPDU type field are : 0x00 Config BPDU, 0x80 TCN BPDU, 0x02 RST BPDU

Hi @WikiJackool:, you are right, there is no ACK BPDU. I didn't develop the current content. I just have the article on my watchlist to check what changes are made to it. When I saw your edit it seemed to me that you inadvertently removed some useful content. Your edit removed all three of the previously listed 'BPDUs', and my revert reinstated them all. Tradional Knowledge in Wikipedia

I work with Afro/Hondurans and Honduran Indians about a new technologies and I am having an incredibly hard time with the issues related to what you can cite, and what you can include. I also research about Afro-Honduran popular culture helping them to connect to their roots in Africa and work with some other researchers of Afro-Latin America popular culture like crafts, games, musical instruments, foods, stories, ceremonies, use of medicinal plants and other healing techniques. I am tremendously excited about sharing about African popular culture that is still alive today in Honduras and in Africa. the problem that the information was not available before in Honduras was a significant problem. I find African and Central American popular culture information which is a part of Traditional Knowledge the most exciting thing in Wikipedia and one of the most exciting things on the Internet. When Africans left Africa on slave ships they carried nothing in their hands, but a lot in their heads and so they were able to recreate foods, crafts, music, stories, and ceremonies and in fact were often able to get access to African origin plants and sometimes even African animals like guinea hens which I find interesting. there will be more left in Central America than in the US, because it is a similar climate and so African plants could grow, and there were large sections of Honduras and Nicaragua that were outside of the colonial government control. The legal definition of where the Honduran border was in this region only dates from 1960. that all the people inside this area have Honduran ID cards dates to after 1992. Category:Former members of the National Assembly of Namibia

I have not been editing many Namibia-related articles lately, but thank you for your continued hard work! I wanted to discuss with you the usefulness of Category:Former members of the National Assembly of Namibia. Under WP:Category names, it says "Occupation categories should not be divided into "current" or "former" categories. For example, Category:Former child actors and Category:Current Minnesota Twins players should not exist." Would you consider deleting the category you recently created on these grounds?--TM 02:51, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi TM, I was just quick-searching and found quite a few such categories (about 8,000, actually), didn't know it is discouraged. Can't delete the cat myself but will just depopulate it, no big deal. I've made a mess

While trying to undo a page move I have produced more chaos: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:%C7%83Karas_Region&diff=prev&oldid=595836571 Now there is one ǃKaras Region and one !Karas Region, with different talk on both talk pages, and I cannot see which is which. (The one '!' is a simple exclamation mark, and the other one the IPA symbol for the click in Khoekhoe) Could someone please:

1. merge the talk pages to the page with the IPA symbol,
2. check if the requested move is on the right page, alternatively repair the RM entry?
3. Undo my move if it moved from 'IPA symbol !' to 'Exclamation mark !'

Du hast auf die offene Meisterschaft verlinkt, ich bezog mich für 2001 aber auf die geschlossene, siehe diese Meldung von 7 Tage später: Namibian Champion Helmut Leichner and Charles Eichab shared the spoils in the Namibian Closed Chess Championship that took place in the capital over the weekend. Die Bemerkung "retained the title" muss sich nicht auf 2000 beziehen, sondern nur auf die letzte Meisterschaft, in welchem Jahr auch immer die stattgefunden hat - und es bezieht sich auf die offene Meisterschaft, nicht auf die geschlossene (falls diese getrennt stattfanden). Wenn es irgendwo etwas schriftliches darüber gibt, dass der 2002er-Titel offiziell anerkannt wurde, wäre es (mit allen Konsequenzen) verwendbar. :) Mit bestem Gruß, --Gereon K. Oral citations experiment - Namibia 2014

Hello Pgallert! I noticed a conversation between you and Isla Haddow just below my interaction with Isla. I'm very interested in attending and participating in this Participatory Design conference. Although I might not have in-depth expertise of Indigenous knowledge systems, I have been on Wikipedia for eight years - reasonably active (I'm sure you're well aware of the internet access issues in Southern Africa). By October, I would have come up to speed with Indigenous knowledge systems - already, I find your work engaging (I've seen your draft Chapter 1) and totally agree that more work must be done to reflect how other cultures transmit their knowledge. What can I do to participate? I know people in Namibia who might be able to offer me accommodation (allowing me to devote more funding to travelling - I will need funding I must mention). Although you say I do not have the appropriate level of expertise in referencing, here is an article I created - one of several - where I have referenced. In this article I have more than 25 references which have stood the test of time (more than ~5 years online), an infobox, reference even books, have external links, categories, re-direct page, etc. Example article Part (talk) 11:26, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Dear Part, I did not agree to have my emails published here, please do not insert them again. The article in question is from 2009, is the only article without large unreferenced pieces that you ever produced, and still the majority of the references contains just title, accessdate, and url. While not strictly 'bare references' in Wikipedia-speak, they are still missing authors, publishers, pagination, context... in other words, all what will be important in the context of our workshop.

Six of the references have this information: author, year, title, publisher, city, pagination, etc Part (talk) 10:11, 21 August 2014 (UTC).

To quote from the grants document: The workshop facilitators vet the entries that have been produced, as well as the general Wikipedia experience of the applicants. You write, "there is no need to shout at me by bolding your posts". You are free to have your interpretation of me shouting. I was not shouting at you - I started using bold face above, that was not directed at you. Also, in the text you removed Deleted text, before my alleged shouting occurred, I in fact put in bold what you were writing, not what I was writing. I use bold font, and/or color to make it easier for readers to identify who is writing and also to highlight what I deem to be important text. You put some text in italics, which originally was not in italics. I did not interpret this as shouting. Part (talk) 19:23, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Könnte es sein, dass die de:Benutzer:Gereon K./Liste der namibischen Meister im Schach vollständig ist und zwischen 2001 und 2005 einfach keine offizielle, nicht international offene, Einzelmeisterschaft stattgefunden hat? Hallo Gereon, nein, ich erinnere mich schon noch an meinen Titel :) Leider war es nur einer und nicht zwei, wie ich dachte, da in 2002 anscheinend ein Match zwischen Titelverteidiger Mueller und Herausforderer Eichab stattgefunden hat, von dem kaum jemand wusste. Meine Erinnerung, dass ich als Windhoek Optics Sieger automatisch Landesmeister wurde, stimmt also so nicht. Der Webmaster hat versprochen, die Daten zurueck bis 1990 einzupflegen, allerdings mahlen die Muehlen hier halt etwas langsamer. Dear Prhartcom, thanks for taking over. A half-finished GA review is always a waste of time. After so long a discussion, I am myself not 100% sure anymore whether or not I'm going over the top with my requests (that's the reason for the 2ndopinion request), so I think it is best if you take over the remaining three points: the quotes on my request, and the other two points on the request of the nominator. Of course you are also free to raise any other points, as my initial review was based on the assumption that there would be a substantial rewrite, and that I would look into each paragraphs wording only after that is done. I was pondering whether I should make the point to the nominator that I am the reviewer, not he, but that would have unnecessarily fanned the flames. Make sure you're not running into the same direction.

Thank-you, Pgallert. I'm glad to hear you have no problem with this idea. The nominator was giving up; he left a note on the GAN Talk page saying this, and I hated to see such a thing. Yes, this may mean I may run into an issue too. I have been on both sides of this, as I suppose you have also, so I can at least empathize. Thank-you also for your offer to discuss this right here; if needed I will surely do so. I see that another editor whom I have worked with in the past has also volunteered to assist me, so perhaps all will go well. I think it would probably be good if you failed the review now; that way your decision will have it's proper ending with loose ends tied up from your point of view and will enable me to start with a fresh page; He told me he expects you will do this and I've informed him to be ready to start a new nomination when you do so.
