Reason for my Nowrap removal[edit]

Hello, with my edit I was attempting to fix a WP:LINT error Miscellaneous issue that was being thrown, and since the nowrap doesn't appear on any of the other of the long named stations with name/name (or on any of the other appearances of Newburyport/Rockport on the page), I removed the tag due to the inconsistency. If the end result of a no wrapping needs to be on those, I'm curious if changing it to {{nowrap begin}} ... {{nowrap end}} (as Template:Nowrap has listed as alternatives to {{nowrap}}) would clear the error and keep the no wrapping (if that is needed) intact. I'm not interested warring with you about it, just interested in fixing the error in a satisfactory, error-free way. Zinnober9 (talk) 07:06, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Zinnober9: Thanks for the clarification - your empty edit summary left me confused. I've replaced with with a hardcoded column width which should work without errors. I'll have to remember the existence of those alternative templates as well. Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 15:36, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for 86 (MBTA bus)[edit]

On 29 June 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 86 (MBTA bus), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that transit service on part of MBTA bus route 86 dates back to 1858? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/86 (MBTA bus). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 86 (MBTA bus)), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Short Description[edit]

This article was listed in the category Articles with long short description. See here

With short descriptions, we have a situation where we are aiming to have a maximum of 40 characters. The driving reason is that the short description is displayed on the mobile access to the article in a search result. 65% of access to Wikipedia is now via mobile devices or tablets. With courtesy, your reversion somewhat defeats that objective to display a short description that is readable on the mobile device. Descriptions over 40 characters get chopped off. What short description do you consider appropriate? --Whiteguru (talk) 20:29, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Whiteguru, (talk page stalker) while appreciating the goal of shorter descriptions, I had qualms about your version too. "F40" isn't a good way to characterize the F40PH; the PH part of the designation is load-bearing, as it were, and they're rarely referred to that way. I've changed the description to "North American diesel locomotive class", which I think is more to the point and adds to the article title. Pi, your thoughts? Mackensen (talk) 20:42, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I was uncomfortable leaving the PH off, but when you're doing 200 or more short description edits in a session, you move quickly. It actually made me think of the P30CH ! Your edited description is fine. --Whiteguru (talk) 20:49, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Whiteguru: Thanks for the detailed explanation. The reason I reverted was that there was no indication in the edit summary why drastically shortening the description was a useful edit. If it is possible to configure the gadget to do so, I would definitely recommend adding something like reducing to below [[Wikipedia:Short description|40-character limit]] to the edit summary to avoid such confusion. Image gallery in Haymarket Square (Boston)[edit]

Hi, I was dismayed to discover that last year you removed the image gallery from the article Haymarket Square (Boston). Your edit summary cited WP:GALLERY as the reason, without further explanation.

I don't understand your reasoning. WP:GALLERY includes this statement: "Generally, a gallery or cluster of images should not be added so long as there is space for images to be effectively presented adjacent to text. A gallery section may be appropriate in some Wikipedia articles if a collection of images can illustrate aspects of a subject that cannot be easily or adequately described by text or individual images."

My view is that the gallery that was removed was appropriate. Haymarket Square has changed dramatically, and many different times, since the 18th century. The gallery illustrated these changes through a clearly captioned chronological set of images. There would not be room to add even a small number of these adjacent to the article text.

I hope you will reconsider, and allow the gallery to be restored.

NewtonCourt (talk) 11:11, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@NewtonCourt: Presenting a large gallery of images to show every aspect of a subject over time is not the purpose of an encyclopedia article. The purpose of an encyclopedia article is to provide a detailed prose overview of the subject, with images used to illustrate the prose. (C.f. The purpose of an image is to increase readers' understanding of the article's subject matter, usually by directly depicting people, things, activities, and concepts described in the article. The relevant aspect of the image should be clear and central. from WP:IMGCONTENT.) If you wish to make a gallery showing a broad overview of Haymarket Square, commons:Haymarket Square (Boston) is the correct location.
As it existed, the gallery did not meet the standards of WP:GALLERY. With 28 images after barely 500 words of prose, Articles consisting entirely or primarily of galleries are discouraged, as the Commons is intended for such collections of images was not met, nor was One rule of thumb to consider: if, due to its content, such a gallery would only lend itself to a title along the lines of "Gallery" or "Images of [insert article title]", as opposed to a more descriptive title, the gallery should either be revamped or moved to the Commons.
I would be fine with a smaller, focused gallery appropriate to the prose; however, expansion of the prose is the best way to improve the article. For example, a single line of 4-6 maps showing the shoreline and street layout changes might be worthwhile, but the images need to illustrate the prose rather than presenting new information. (Side note, if you haven't read Nancy Seasholes' excellent Gaining Ground: A History of Landmaking in Boston, I highly recommend you acquire a copy – she has 35 pages about the Bulfinch Triangle alone.) Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:27, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your response. I'll put together a smaller gallery focused on the maps. And yes, Seasholes' book is great. In fact, the page has five references to it, including listing it as the source of the panoramic photo. NewtonCourt (talk) 12:29, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bay Area Rapid Transit[edit]

Hey! You recently reverted the CitationBOT changes I made to Bay Area Rapid Transit. At first I disagreed with their reversion, but after your second edit summary I agree with you. I really value link archiving as it often eliminates future issues (prevention is the best treatment). But I hadn't considered the drastic change in page size. I agree that the benefit of archiving links is definitely overshadowed by a huge increase in data like on that article. Thanks for helping me realize that!

Best, RFZYNSPY talk 18:52, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@RFZYNSPY: Thanks for understanding. If you're worried about linkrot on a specific page, you can always do the full archiving and then just self-revert - that will ensure that all links are archived for use when needed (and IAbot will automatically fix them if they go dead), but won't increase the page size for live links. Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:12, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Whoa that is a smart idea! Thanks for the pointer. RFZYNSPY talk 19:14, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Would you like to do a GA review?[edit]

Hi Pi. How would you like to do a good article review for Bayswater railway station, Perth? Steelkamp (talk) 15:20, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the review. Especially for pointing out the problem with stop numbers, a problem common to every station article in Perth. A lot of articles need fixing. Steelkamp (talk) 09:31, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for making it easy - the article was already very high quality! Don't stress too much about the stop numbers; while it's best to remove them when you're making other edits to an article, it's not urgent by any means. Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 17:09, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Asking for opinion on a page merger[edit]

Hi Pi! I wanted to reach out and ask for your thoughts on a merger proposal for Fresno's California High-Speed Rail Station and the Fresno Southern Pacific Depot, as CAHSRA seems to wish to use the historic depot as their station headhouse, or at least some integrate portions of the building into the station site. I'm not present sure if there's enough information to justify it right now as I'm relying on things the agency has said on their youtube channel, as well as wording in This PDF regarding design work for the site. While they have outright stated "we intend to incorporate the old and remodeled station that is already there" in videos released regarding work in the Central Valley, I'm not sure if the information I have is enough to justify a page merger, rather than including more information about the CAHSR station and SP station on each other's pages. Since you've done a lot of edits in California and on transportation-related articles in general, I feel your opinion would be a valuable one. A washing machine for you[edit]

The Washing Machine of "That SPI was Pretty Good"
There's a lot of bad SPIs, and clerks and admins tend to complain about it. When I taught middle-schoolers I was always told that positive reënforcement is better than negative, so, in an attempt to apply the same principle here and start a new tradition... This SPI was pretty good, and for that I award you the inaugural Washing Machine of "That SPI was Pretty Good". -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 19:05, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

P.S., I don't understand enough of what's happening at Special:Contribs/User98207252129 and Special:Contribs/NotTheWikipedianHere to know what to revert, but since you have subject-matter familiarity, can you advise: Is this massrollback territory, selective rollback territory, or best left to stand? -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 19:37, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Tamzin: Thanks for the amusing award and kind words! Great catch on your part finding the older accounts - I'd completely forgotten about them. The edits are a mixed bag; I'll selectively rollback some, and modify others during the regular course of editing the pages. Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:14, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, they helped me by very blatantly tying back to the oldest. Glad they did, because the existence of a standing indef saved me from having to do a whole policy-based analysis of what the appropriate sanction is. Anyways, sounds good on the reverts. (There's also a few pages that are G5-eligible, which I'll leave to your discretion.) If they pop up again, I plan to be much more aggressive on reverting and G5, because the last thing you want someone thinking is that they can put whatever they want on Wikipedia as long as they're okay with changing accounts every few weeks. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 21:28, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Need help with infobox maps[edit]

I need your help with the article on the Sean Collier Memorial at MIT. As it stands now, the infobox only indicates the location of Cambridge in the state of Massachusetts, at a very coarse degree of resolution. I would like to add a map with 3 levels of resolution, such as the ones in Museum of Science (Boston) or The Tech Interactive. My first crude attempt to do this fails utterly, and is not even recognized as a valid template parameter. Can this feature be added for most articles that have an infobox map, or are there non-obvious limitations on availability of this feature? Reify-tech (talk) 18:12, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Reify-tech: I'm not too familiar with these maps, but I did get it to work. Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:13, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! It is as simple as I hoped it would be. The example I was trying to emulate used "pushpin_map", so I naively copied the parameter. Since I don't know what to call the feature, I couldn't search for it. Your assistance with maps and graphics is always appreciated. Reify-tech (talk) 21:23, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
