Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, PromiseMade. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Promise Technology, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. WPscatter t/c 07:11, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why do changes keep reverting to previous outdated information. I am updating the page and removing the marketing stuff. Just the facts. What is the point of Wikipedia? This is ridiculous. PromiseMade (talk) 07:21, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I give up. There is no point to this site. PromiseMade (talk) 07:30, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
How about you actually give up, instead of just trying again? You'll be blocked either way, so it doesn't matter. Mako001 (C)  (T)  🇺🇦 08:10, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

November 2022[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Mako001. I wanted to let you know that one of your recent contributions—specifically this edit to Promise Technology—has been undone because it appeared to be promotional. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted; Wikipedia articles should be written objectively, using independent sources, and from a neutral perspective. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Help desk. Thank you. Mako001 (C)  (T)  🇺🇦 08:08, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The edits are removing promotional material and updating content. PromiseMade (talk) 08:13, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Rubbish. You might be removing some, but you are also adding further promotional material, so that the net effect is not helpful. Mako001 (C)  (T)  🇺🇦 08:17, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm removing outdated info, and changing descriptions to remove marketing speak. PromiseMade (talk) 08:20, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The current chairman, number of employees, it is not a private company, etc. And some of the product lines are no longer made. How is this promotional? PromiseMade (talk) 08:21, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sources please. Mako001 (C)  (T)  🇺🇦 08:22, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The company website has this information. PromiseMade (talk) 08:25, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, all the information is outdated, and apparently is going to stay that way. I was literally just trying to help. Oh well. PromiseMade (talk) 08:30, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The company website is okay for certain things, like number of employees, personnel, etc, but the article should primarily summarize independent reliable sources with significant coverage(which does not include product announcements). As the article has been tagged as problematic since 2010, I have nominated it for deletion, you are welcome to contribute to the discussion. 331dot (talk) 08:39, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It would be preferable to simply delete it entirely than leave it as is. 125.227.182.252 (talk) 08:45, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, it is so out of date and all promotional content, it should just be removed. I was just trying to help. But apparently that earns a block at this site.
Good to know. PromiseMade (talk) 08:47, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You are not blocked, nor is there a reason to from what I see. 331dot (talk) 14:08, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@PromiseMade: The help is appreciated, but as it stands your username does come across as though you are someone affiliated with the company. Would you be amenable to requesting a username change and disclosing any conflicts of interest you might have before making any more edits to the article? I understand that you are trying to be helpful and update the article. ceranthor 14:19, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I was acting in good faith and doing precisely the opposite of what I was accused. Nonetheless, I was doing it on my own time as a favor to the company. Since the entry cannot be updated, it would be preferable to simply remove it.
It is rather difficult to believe any company info listed on Wikipedia is written/edited by people who have no stake in the information, but whatever. I am not going to tell you all how to do business.
Cheers. PromiseMade (talk) 00:18, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is almost entirely maintained by unpaid volunteers. While I'm sure conflict-of-interest edits slip through from time to time, most are quickly reverted if deemed non-neutral, unsupported by independent sources, or promotional, as they were in your case.
The article can be kept, and edits made, as long as there are independent sources supporting the info. As you have a conflict of interest you are strongly discouraged from editing directly (it's very hard to write with a neutral point of view in cases like this) but you are entirely free to suggest edits for other, impartial editors to make, if they are appropriate. See here and here for guides on how to do that. If there is a lack of supporting sources for notability then the article will likely be deleted. WPscatter t/c 03:14, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your username[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "PromiseMade", may not comply with our username policy. Please note that you may not use a username that represents the name of a company, group, organization, product, service, or website. Examples of usernames that are not allowed include "XYZ Company", "MyWidgetsUSA.com", and "Foobar Museum of Art". However, you are permitted to use a username that contains such a name if it identifies you individually (not your role), such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87", but not "SEO Manager at XYZ Company".

Please also note that Wikipedia does not allow accounts to be shared by multiple people and that you may not advocate for or promote any company, group, organization, product, service, or website, regardless of your username. Please also read our paid editing policy and our conflict of interest guideline. If you are a single individual and are willing to contribute to Wikipedia in an unbiased manner, please request a change of username by completing the form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest, choosing a username that complies with our username policy. Alternatively, you can just create a new account and use that for editing. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. Thank you. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 16:08, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thanks, I just wanted to update an entry by request of a friend who is an exec at the company in question. The updates were made in good faith and the marketing/promotional language was being removed. However the changes were deemed unacceptable. Since the entry cannot be updated, it would be preferable to remove it entirely as an extremely out of date, poorly written entry is damaging to the company brand, and no entry has no effect whatsoever. If it cannot be updated, we prefer it be taken down.
Thanks,
Bill PromiseMade (talk) 00:13, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames which give the impression that the account represents a group, club, organization, company, or website, I have blocked this account from editing. You are welcome to continue editing after you have chosen a new username that complies with Wikipedia's username policy.

You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable, regardless of the username that you choose. Additionally, if your contributions to Wikipedia form all or part of work for which you are, or expect to be, paid or compensated in any way, you must disclose who is paying you to edit here.

Please take a moment to either create a new account, or request a username change of your current account here. The new username that you choose must represent you as an individual person, and it must comply with Wikipedia's username policy.
  • To create a new account with a different username, simply log out of this account and then click here to make a new one.
  • If you prefer to change the username on this account, you may do so by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page here: {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken or in use by another account. You can go here to search and see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is available to be taken.

Please also note that you are permitted to use a username that contains the name of a company or organization if it also identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87", but not "SEO Manager at XYZ Company".

Appeals: If your username does not represent a group, organization, website, or other entity described above, and if you believe that this block was incorrect or made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page here: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}
