WHAT Wikis Take Manhattan is a scavenger hunt and free content photography contest aimed at illustrating Wikipedia and StreetsWiki articles covering sites and street features in Manhattan and across the five boroughs of New York City.

LAST YEAR'S EVENT

WINNINGS? The first prize winning team members will get Eye-Fi Share cards, which automatically upload photos from your camera to your computer and to sites like Flickr. And there will also be cool prizes for other top scorers.

WHEN The hunt will take place Saturday, October 10th from 1:00pm to 6:30pm, followed by prizes and celebration.

WHO All Wikipedians and non-Wikipedians are invited to participate in team of up to three (no special knowledge is required at all, just a digital camera and a love of the city). Bring a friend (or two)!

REGISTER The proper place to register your team is here. It's also perfectly possible to register on the day of when you get there, but it will be slightly easier for us if you register beforehand.

WHERE Participants can begin the hunt from either of two locations: one at Columbia University (at the sundial on college walk) and one at The Open Planning Project's fantastic new event space nestled between Chinatown and SoHo. Everyone will end at The Open Planning Project:

At this point, I am going to try to finish the assessments for Uganda, as I was asked to do by another editor, which should be done by the end of the week, and maybe depending on how long that takes, try to get more assessments for the Vatican done, to help select articles for that portal. PS, Ragesoss, another note while I'm here :) I've gotten multiple requests from editors wanting to interview me for The Signpost; one of those had already set up an interview that had some "interesting" wording. In case it comes up again, I'll politely decline being interviewed by editors who don't know well my entire history on Wiki-- my work at FAC, FAR, articlehistory, Unreviewed FAs, medical articles, the Dispatches (of which I was most proud) etc.-- editors like Tony, Marskell, Karanacs and several others. Thoughts?[edit]

Sage, I'm thinking of something like a biweekly report where I ask for comments from people who have been active in policy page discussions. The current submission came out well I think for people who are really into this stuff, although it's a bit "dry"; see Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2009-11-02/Discussion_report#Policy report. Regardless of the quality (or lack thereof) of the summary, if the existence of the column encourages the kind of thoughtful responses at Wikipedia_talk:SOCK#Interview for Signpost, then I think the column is a net positive. I don't have any strong feelings what the summary should look like; my inclination is generally to just try to report what people are saying with editorial judgment but not a lot of embellishment, but if you'd like to tweak it, please feel free. Dank, thanks for taking this on; it definitely seems worthwhile to me, and your plan for it seems a good one. One related idea that I've been thinking about is policy histories, which would sort of summarize how a specific policy developed over time and why: when was this bit added, and in response to what? etc. But I'm not sure if that would be right for the Signpost; it'd be more of a useful resource to be included on each policy page, so that our weird policies can start to make a little more sense to the people who didn't write them.--ragesoss (talk) 22:07, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think it would be helpful if the top of every policy talk page gave some links to recent conversations that shaped the page, if the goal is to help new readers get up to speed. But it would be a good idea to keep the links minimal, otherwise it might devolve into arguments about the arguments ... who should get credit, etc. If someone wants to know what was behind a certain change, those questions get asked and answered all the time on policy talk pages. - Dank (push to talk) 23:41, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, review the recent Wikipedia Takes Manhattan, plan for the next stages of projects like Wikipedia at the Library and Wikipedia Loves Landmarks, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, for example particular problems posed by Wikipedia articles about racist and anti-semitic people and movements (see the September meeting's minutes).

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.

Date formats[edit]

I noticed you have changed the date formats for many of the current Signpost pages from 2 November 2009 to November 2, 2009. A few spot checks indicates that the former is traditionally much more common on regular features. Wiktionary lookup tool[edit]

Yeah, sorry the instructions are unclear. I was somewhat in a rush when writing them. Basically, add the following to the html of your blog somewhere:

if (!window.wiktLookup) wiktLookup = {};
wiktLookup.count = 3;
</script>

(Replacing the 3 with whatever you want the max number of definitions to be displayed. The script obviously won't display more defintions than exist, so if you want as many as possible put count to 9000 or something really big. It should be noted that it will still only display definitions for only a single language (aka it will not display what the word means if it is an english word, and what the word means if its a french word). WiktLookup configurable width and height[edit]

It took a little longer than anticipated (I've been quite busy recently), but wiktLookup now supports configurable width and height. Adding something like:

Article Incubator / Copyvio linked from Main Page[edit]

The article incubator is being used for a different purpose to its originally intended one. Through a discusstion at WP:UKT it became apparant that a number of editors had some of the info on a particular subject, but none had it all. Rather than create a poor article in mainspace, collaboration is now taking place in the article incubator at Wikipedia:Article Incubator/SE&CR Diagram 960 PMV. Maybe worth a mention in the Signpost?

Also, you may be interested in the fall-out from a copyvio article (Charles Fryatt) being linked on the main page. see Wikipedia Talk:Main_Page#Copyright_violations.3B_the_front_page and Talk:Charles Fryatt. I rewrote the article from scratch and two editors have awarded me a barnstar for that so far. I'm trying for a DYK and GA status with FA status in the medium term. Election report[edit]

Hey Sage, this time around, the precise time of publication will make a big difference. Voting closed about 8 hours ago; the scrutineers are at work checking, certifying, and then announcing the tally at the election talk page. I think we're expecting this should take up to a day, but this is unclear, since it's the first time SecurePoll has been used for an ArbCom election. Can you buzz me when you have a reasonable idea of the publication date: I'll do a draft soon in the expectation that publication will be before the tally is announced, but it would be good to update if the announcement happens in time.
