What's up with Glee

[edit]

Robert, I never did answer your question about current progress on the season three episodes. I'm hoping to finish "Goodbye (Glee)" late on Saturday, and will let you know when it's in the GAN hopper. The person who grabbed "Sexy" in nine minutes at the beginning of the month took two weeks to finish the review, and is currently off on vacation. It will probably pass early next week, but it would be nice to have you do the "Goodbye" review, especially since I know it will be more timely.

After this, there are four more season three episode articles to work up—disco through prom—though not that much enthusiasm for doing so. I haven't even started on laying out the first episodes for season four, and usually I'd have all the gory production details ready to go at least for the season premiere long before now, even though I'm keeping track as best I can. Maybe I'll try for something once "Goodbye" is done. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:35, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'll be waiting for it ;) Season 4 seems like we'll sometimes see Rachel's arc, or Santana's, or Kurt's, etc. just to keep them on the show; but we'll still mostly see the McKinley glee club, with Sue and Emma only seen occasionally. I hope not, but the cast is becoming rather large for ~45 minutes of air time per week. I've not heard if Puck, Quinn or Mercedes will return. Rcej (Robert)talk 06:39, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, I think we'll be seeing Rachel's arc in all 22 episodes. Don't know whether Kurt and Santana and Finn will be seen that often, but Kurt gets to New York pretty quickly—episode 4 at the latest—and I expect Santana won't be far behind. I think we see Puck in the premiere, when his half brother is introduced as a regular, but not often after that. Quinn and Mercedes will return at least a few times during the year (as will Mike), and I think the first time we get to see everyone is around episode 5, the same one in which Blake Jenner's character (he won The Glee Project) appears for his seven-episode arc (in Ohio, and presumably at McKinley. Maybe also in the Thanksgiving/Sectionals two-parter? So far as I know, both new recurring female students, Kitty and Marley, show up in the premiere, as does Unique. No idea whether Unique stays at McKinley, though. I gather than Will and Emma are being back-burnered a bit, though Will is still presiding over the choir room. Sue will have her baby, Becky is returning, and Roz will be around. Beiste is also returning, and we do get to see Burt.
No further progress on the episode; I think I'll see if I can knock off another paragraph before bedtime. Only a couple more before I can turn my attention to the lede and then do the final cleanup edits. If you're around tonight, should I try to put it in the queue for you to pick up, and then do the cleanup during the day on Sunday? That vacation I mentioned above ends on Sunday, so the sooner the better, probably. I just noticed you've done a couple of edits in the past half hour; let me know and I'm happy to do so at our mutual convenience tonight. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:04, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've just added a first image—there should eventually be more—which should be just enough to justify a GAN submission without embarrassment. Hope you're around and can get it before others swoop in. BlueMoonset (talk) 08:16, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've done a bit more work, including cutting the plot down to size; the article now has two images (one a double), which is all I think it's going to get. Hope that's good enough. Thanks again! BlueMoonset (talk) 20:33, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Any hook ideas for The New Rachel?

[edit]

Robert, I've been racking my brains, and can't come up with a hook for this. I was hoping you could help. Actually, I couldn't until I wrote the first sentence of this plea, at which point my brain came up with the following, which might do if nothing better occurs to either of us:

Any thoughts or ideas? The article was started from a redirect on August 21, so I need to submit a nomination by the end of the 26th (or just under 23 hours from now). I can always add an ALT later, of course. (Not to worry: I have over a dozen QPQs waiting to be used.) BlueMoonset (talk) 01:10, 26 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thought you might get a chuckle out of my proposed hook for Template:Did you know nominations/Britney 2.0. ALT1 is a bit more laid back... ;-) I lucked out: they just announced that particular piece tonight; it was looking pretty grim in terms of hook possibilities until then. (I really didn't want to go the "second tribute episode" route, and trying to stretch it by noting it was the second episode of the second even-numbered season just didn't cut it...

How busy are you with school this fall? I suspect that my GA output is going to be much slower this fall... BlueMoonset (talk) 02:35, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Rob! Would you be willing to take a look at Abby Cunningham (another Knots Landing character) when you get a chance? HorrorFan121 (talk) 19:49, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Will do. I'll get to it this weekend ;) Rcej (Robert)talk 03:10, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Robert, can I ask you to take a look at this one, especially the final hook, and see whether you think it passes the fictional test? I know you have a good sense of that particular guideline, and since I proposed the latest version of the hook, I can't approve it even if I did feel confident of where the proper DYK hook borderline was and making this hook real-world enough. The article seems fine to me; it's a matter of the hook passing muster. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:07, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Actually, no. That was the nominator, who certainly can't formally approve the hook I suggested. ;) This requires an outside, uninvolved party, which is why I was hoping you could not only look at it from the fictional perspective, but to assign an icon (tick or problem) to the nomination (and specific hook) so it can proceed or head back to the drawing boards. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 14:25, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Want to pick George Armitage Miller for a GA review?

Few psychologists with GAs; just got Irving Gottesman GAed; now put this one up. Would really appreciate it if you could take a look, since it is hard to find reviewers in that entire topic category. Churn and change (talk) 02:48, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The 100 DYK Nomination Medal
100 nominations! In my opinion this is the best type of DYK award. Lots of people write about what they think is important, but those who nominate other people's work are encouraging editors. That is what we need. And I see you are working on the medical project - well done. Can I get your advice?

[edit]

I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that you had nominated an article I created, Yu Zhou, to appear as a "Did You Know" section on the home page. So thanks for that. But now I am in a quandary, and wondered if you could help.

The editor who reviewed the nomination made a series of changes to that article, including deleting several key pieces of information and context, and adding his own editorializing suggesting a strong personal bias. In his comment on the DYK nomination, he declared preemptively that if I disputed his edits, then the page would become unstable and the nomination would need to be withdrawn. I did disagree with some of his edits and explained my reasoning on the talk page. Apparently intent on creating instability, he basically started edit warring and wrote a massive, meandering treatise on the talk page--one that would take hours to respond to adequately. Then he reiterated his position that, if we can't come to an agreement, the DYK nomination must be withdrawn.

Frankly, this guy is sort of testing the limits of my "good faith." I've seen him before attempting to delete or whitewash well-cited information or evidence relating to the persecution of Falun Gong (eg. [1]). Trying to make the Yu Zhou article unstable as a means of keeping it off the home page is perfectly congruous with his previous conduct on Falun Gong-related issues. It's annoying. Do you have any advice on dealing with this kind of disruption?

(By the way, for what it's worth, I think he's actually mistaken in his assertion that DYKs need to be stable. New articles should be expected to evolve and change rapidly, right?) TheBlueCanoe 21:37, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Let me read everything, just so I can know where we are right now. But nobody should be suggesting a withdrawal of this nomination! That's not happening. Too important of a story...I think just a drop of justice for this man, in an ocean of human rights violations, is the least someone can do; but the article can't advocate for anything whatsoever. I'll comment further on the DYK page ;) Rcej (Robert)talk 03:34, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, how's this for a solution: The anniversary of Yu Zhou's death falls on February 6. If a neutral, experienced editor can review the hook to make sure that the article meets basic requirements (and it does), then maybe we can hold it to run on the anniversary. In the mean time, I would be happy to pursue dispute resolution with Shrigley to hammer out whatever legitimate concerns he might have, assuming there are any. That seems like a win-win to me.
By the way, where are you from in Louisiana? I'm originally from New Orleans, though I mostly grew up overseas.TheBlueCanoe 13:19, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Following up

[edit]

Hey Rcej. I wanted to get your advice on an ongoing situation at the Yu Zhou article. The editor who originally sought to disrupt the nomination by filibustering and starting an edit war on the page seems to have given up, but another, new user—who I think might actually be the same guy—seems to now be trying to do the same thing. He's making the exact same edits (which are not supported by any sources), and I worry that his purpose is also to create instability so that the page can't be promoted to DYK. The new guy is User:Lostromantic, whose editing patterns are bizarre and rather precocious. One of the very first things he did upon creating an accounting—before I had any interaction with him—was to leave this obnoxious note on my talk page. He also started hounding another user who edits on topics related to China. Have you got any recommendations on dealing with this? TheBlueCanoe 02:55, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hey there! Sorry this junk keeps happening...I would suggest you request an Administrator to look into this, so long as you present your case well, and Wikilink all your evidence and correspondence with the troublemaker. DYKs again

[edit]

You are welcome to nominate my articles for DYK if you wish. Since nominations are only valid for five days after creation/expansion I will probably nominate them myself on the last available day if they have not previously been nominated. For your information, I list the relevant articles at the top of my sandbox page, beside the cute tree frog image. At the moment the first item is Barbary ground squirrel 14/2. I will nominate it this evening, 19/2 (UK time) unless you want to do it first. Basically I am going for DYK because of the WikiCup, a competition that really suits what I want to do on Wikipedia, the creation and improvement of (mostly biological) articles. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:26, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I try to only nominate yours if I think you weren't interested in nominating that article for whatever reason...how about putting an 'x' in your New Article edit summaries that you have plans for? That way, I will know to leave them alone! ;) Rcej (Robert)talk 12:07, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well I guess that I would probably nominate them all. Knowing they are going to DYK is quite a good discipline because I know someone is going to look critically at the article and even check for close paraphrasing, reliable sources, accuracy etc, so I do the best I can with the available material. It really depends why you are nominating articles. If it is to amass a high DYK nomination count that is one thing and you are welcome to carry on nominating mine. But if your purpose is to nominate articles that would not otherwise go to DYK, that is quite different and you would need to look for them elsewhere. Cheers. Care to review a newly created Glee article for GA? :) — Robin (talk) 02:18, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've just put a comment on the Holly talk page: I don't think the article is ready, and didn't when I did the last major edits to it in the beginning of 2012, which were left incomplete, as I'd hoped that Frickative would finish the remaining tasks. As for Shelby, I feel the reception information concentrates too much on the third season at the expense of the first season: it's unbalanced, and there needs to be more first season. The article also makes no mention of her appearance last week in "Sweet Dreams", Shelby's first in season 4, which establishes that she's in New York with Beth, and how she's making a living. Material needs to be included on that as well, from storyline to reception. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:53, 27 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have never done character articles before; I don't know what makes it GA-worthy. The articles are comprehensive enough in my opinion. Before you cited your sentiments regarding Shelby's season 4 storyline, I considered that storyline too minor to warrant article text. Might need to watch the episode again ... she's running some kind of daycare? As for Holly, I've responded on her talk page. — Robin (talk) 22:11, 27 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think you're making good improvements to the articles, but character GAs need more in the background areas about those characters (broad coverage), and a good balance on the character appearances, and regular and musical reception. There are a dozen Glee character articles that are at GA status that you could take as models. The first one I worked on was Finn Hudson: I got involved because it had been nominated for GA without a Musical performances section, and was weak in some other areas, so a few of us chipped in to bring it up to level. Burt Hummel was one I brought up to GA, but Dave Karofsky and Shannon Beiste were ones that were mine from start to finish. You should definitely look at other articles done by others: Kurt Hummel is one that made it much of the way to FA status but had a bit too much informal prose, so even if it has fallen behind over the past two years, its material covering the first and second season should be in fine shape. Still, character articles are not my strongest point, in part because they do involve finding and putting together bits of information about characters from interviews in obscure places, and it's the sort of hunt I'm not so interested in.
As for Shelby, you probably don't need to say much about her most recent appearance, but the storyline should certainly include a sentence or two that mentions that she lives in New York, is keeping in touch with Rachel, and has the daycare business. (I thought it was significant that she showed up to keep Rachel from making a mistake in her choice of music for her audition.) The new duet might have been reviewed: if nothing else, there might be contrasts to their previous duets. (I recall quite a bit of ink spilt over their version of Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" in "Theatricality", for example.) I am quite serious about the lack of balance in the article between seasons one and three, and the comparative paucity of information on the former is more than enough to keep this from being approved. Just because the first-season episode articles have less information in them than third-season articles is no reason for this character article to be similarly unbalanced. The sources are out there; they just need a more thorough mining. BlueMoonset (talk) 03:53, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
