List of hydroelectric power stations in Albania

The reference to Fier Power Plant, the entry seems to be in error as the Wiki clickable link clearly shows it to be a Thermal Steam, sub-bitumous plant of 6 X 31 MW Units.

I disagree in general with the re-arranging of lists by 'size of plant' its fine to have a list of the larger ones, however "Bigger is not always - Better!" indeed some of the small older historic plants are the more interesting.

Likewise I would prefer to see the second column more specific e.g. Los Reyunos PSP 2 X 175 / 182 MW Reversible Francis 1978. Ref: 'Water Power & Dam Construction' 12/1990.

Regarding 'Flags' it may be better to put in 'sub-headers' (you could still keep the flag - )doing away with that third column 'country' and using that column for location. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shunterdownunder (talk • contribs) 01:14, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

Template:Infobox power station - Reactors and power ratings revert

The problem is obvious with eg. Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant. If the changes are not made the two labels for Decommissioned are identical and the MW data is lost in confusion. Even worse is like Paks_Nuclear_Power_Plant - that seems to say 1,970 reactors are operational! Unless you have a big plan to change the works this is a no-brainer. Suggest if you are going that route need to get someone onboard who can run macros over the (tens-hundreds) of NPP links. Corella (talk) 14:02, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Corella. Reason I revert that is because you have changed the "depreciated" parameters; parameters which are no longer supposed to be used, and parameters that are currently being replaced newer parameters, by bot. It would be more reasonable to update those articles with the updated templates found at template:infobox power station. Do let me know of any issues. Kind regards. OK so there will be a bot s/r fix to migrate the data. At the moment though there is a bad situation - the numbers are screwy and missing on dozens of pages - anyways I will monitor. The other thing to consider doing for now is simply blanking the screwy data in the template rather than leaving it showing up under vague labels like "Reactors Decom." Decommissioned, Under Construction, Planned, Cancelled. Also [1] might help - the ones I changed to say "[C|c]apacity" are in MW. [EDIT] Started looking at bot edits and its not as simple as that. Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant shows there are problems with Decommissioned. Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant shows discrepancies (ie. not the nice (NumberxUnitMW) like the others) for Cancelled but the result is legible. [EDIT2] Planned and Under Construction broke at eg. Okay, I need to figure out which problems should be resolved by my bot, and which should be resolved within the template. I basically took the translation list provided at Template talk:Infobox power station, and had my bot perform the transformations. Now, if those translated fields aren't being correctly handled by the template, then we can fix that within the template. If it is a problem with incorrect translation to the wrong parameters, I need to correct that in each article. I am going to continue this thread on the talk page. Thanks! Template:Infobox Stausee

Hi Rehman. I've responded to the AFD proposal. You have done a lot of hard work in replacing the template, which I appreciate and is entirely the right way to go. However, "Infobox Stausee" is a valuable translators' tool for the reasons I have explained at AFD. Importing articles from German Wikipedia is a two-step process. Step 1: translate article, leaving "Infobox Stausee" to sweep up the infobox data. Step 2: Replace the infobox. Step 1 is the translator's job. Step 2 is for any reasonably savvy Wikipedian. So I don't oppose your efforts, just would like to retain "Infobox Stausee" to aid Step 1, although I have suggested a modification that may be beneficial. Can we work on this jointly? Bermicourt found a template on en.wikipedia that automatically translates templates from other language Wikipedias. His part of the discussion is here on my talk page. My responses are on his. With your experience, I wonder if we could do this for Infobox dam? I recognized some of the coding but not all of it. I'd appreciate it if you'd look at it. I love that shimming thing, never actually heard of that trick before, but it sure worked marvellously! (the wikitext you see was automatically converted to preset English translations upon saving this non-English template). I agree it would be quite helpful if we could embed such a function to the dam infobox.

Currently have some connection issues over here, so can't stay online as usual. Will copy the templates to my PC and work offline (I recognize the coding), will keep updating whenever I can, but it may take some time.

On a side note, since {{Infobox Burg}} fully works for {{Infobox military structure}}, it is really better off at {{Infobox military structure/Burg}}. Anyways, will look into that later. See you around! Reh man 14:45, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

I tested it in my sandbox and for the most part it pulled over what was the same. The image (data) came over a little weird but I don't see why. Infboxbox stausee is a little different too, it has one field for construction period among others. Also, "Bauwerksvolumen" translates in Google to "Memory space" which I believe is structural volume or "volume" in infobox dam. I am going to add fields to Infobox dam for active and inactive storage as well which Stausee has and is also important I think.--NortyNort (Holla) 02:40, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Those dam issues

Hey, I think a bot can make all of the lowercase "d"s in the Infobox dam parameter instead of you having to muscle through them. Also, I saw some of the recent changes you made to the dam infobox and I don't think a separate header for dam isn't entirely necessary. The infobox is about a dam after all and while your edits separate out some good info, having owners, developers, commission date in a general area may be misleading. Often different companies design the power plant and dam. Also, dam's more commonly have dedication dates rather than commissioning dates. That is usually for their power plants. I liked how it was before where the dam info was in the generally area which the reservoir and power plant cascading below it. I am not sure how other editors feel and can post these comments on the Infobox dam talk page too.--NortyNort (Holla) 05:46, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi. The lowercase "d" edits was when I was on a PC where the keyboard was not that good, and I wanted to remove the links to that redirect for some time, while I also don't want to disturb anyone with putting up another bot. So, with all the addons on my Firefox set, it created a good recipe for a relinking spree ;) Those edits were sort of automated with some firefox addons, I hope I didn't mess any article up, did I?

Coming to the template, I added the "owners", "developers", etc, to reflect the lead section contents of the power station infobox, which (I now realize after your post) is a really bad bad move, as a large percentage of dams is not necessarily linked to a power station; I will revert/fix it shortly. Regarding the dam section, I think its a bit neater, but its a good idea to start a discussion at the infobox.

Good and bad news with Infobox Stausee

Rehman, the translation template for Infobox stausee is up and working. There is only two problems. Stausee uses metric units and does not assume an editor will use our {{Convert}}. I used the Convert template in the coding and I was having some success (it actually converted the numbers in the transition). The problem is two-fold; error messages show up on the infobox on the Template:Infobox_dam/Stausee page and in the infobox of the effected article. The errors only show in the infobox of the article for the fields that were not given by an editor. So, I was trying to add some sort of #if: parameter into the coding so it would ignore fields not filled in. Any thoughts? Can you help out? Almost there...

If I understood right, this is something to do with the level of transclusion used (the same reason why I didnt use the {{Convert}} at this article). I think I didn't explain it right...it is sort of difficult. Essentially, I was trying to put the Convert template in the Infobox stausee coding so it would convert the numbers from metric. It worked, but only for fields that numbers were given for. Otherwise, anerror showed in the empty field. And on the Infobox stausee's actual page, there was errors in every field. I don't believe it was from that transclusion error. I figured though that is it fine to do it in the article instead of the coding. Hi Rehman, I was wondering why you (and some other editors) deleted some images that I posted to Wikimedia Commons and used on the RISM article. I understand that their use was called into question due to copyright reasons, but the message I received from Diannaa said that they would be deleted after 7 days, beginning March 31. (I am now in the process of securing a copyright letter. My firm holds the copyrights.) It hasn't been 7 days yet but I see that the images have been deleted. Did I misunderstand something? Some of the files you uploaded were considered promotional content (speedy deletion criteria), others are missing essential information such as license or source (deletion in 7 days), while others are fair use material (speedy deletion). I second Erik's comment. I agree with the train of thought that an editor that elects to pursue as many permissions as they are qualified for is a sign of eagerness to help the project, not self-importantance / "flag grabbing" / etc. If not for your misstep on Q4, I would have remained firmly in the support column. CSD can be a little tricky, as I have learned since I started participating in that area after starting to use TW last month, and people aren't always perfect. What I think some editors forget is that there is nothing that says an administrator must act on every CSD that they see and that it would be entirely permissible to move past one that they might be unsure of and leave it to someone that may have a bit more experience. Same here. The RfA group likes to find singular problems to latch on to and even one can derail an RfA. It's just the way things are. Once you gave an unsatisfactory answer, the RfA was doomed. I totally agree with the thoughts in your statement on the RfA page, and the comments above. Just ignore the bad faith accusations, take a break if you need to but please don't consider giving up your work on Wikipedia. Three Gorges Dam

Three Gorges Dam has storage capacity of 39 cu.km. It is not the largest capacity dam on earth.

1955 - Zhiguli Hydroelectric Station in Russia has capacity of 58 cu.km

1960 - Kariba Dam in Zimbabwe has capacity of 181 cu.km

1970 - Bukhtarma Hydroelectric Power Plant in Kazakhstan has a capacity of 53 cu.km

1975 - Aswan High Dam in Egypt has a capacity of 157 cu.km

1995 - Ataturk Dam in Turkey has a capacity of 49 cu.km

Hydro

I know some dams generate electricity. But how exactly do they do that? Is it the water pressure? Can you explain please?

It's both the pressure and the flow velocity. Tall, small, dams have a small amount of water at high pressure (the turbines are at the bottom of the hill, connected by large pipes called penstocks). Low, wide dams on rivers have lots of flow, but only a small pressure or 'head'. You can make water turbines work with either type of flow, but they type of turbine needs to be chosen to suit whichever is available. Andy Dingley (talk) 20:01, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Wind turbines are more like the low-head water turbines found in river dams. There's no analogue for wind turbines that is comparable to the high-head (i.e. high pressure difference) turbines found below high dams.

The closest water turbine to a wind turbine would be one, like SeaGen, placed in a tidal race, a free-flowing channel between islands in a strongly tidal area. These are very rare as yet, but they're the most promising plan for tidal power. Anything else involves huge dams, at incredible costs. Andy Dingley (talk) 23:18, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Upia Dam

Hey Rehman, I just came across this article and noticed an IP had made some edits indicating the dam was not yet built. I tried to confirm it was but couldn't as source you initially made the article with was a dead link but I happened to find another link. Problem is that I couldn't confirm its existence or specifications in that source, along with other searches. Do you remember any other sources that say otherwise? Some old Spanish references like here indicate it was at least under study in the early 1990s. This is the Spanish version of what I believe you looked at. I think the period they described in there was when the dam was designed, not constructed.--NortyNort (Holla) 05:58, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi. I remember wading through aerial/satellite images from NASA and other providers of Google Maps, trying to find where on earth that Upia Dam is located, and never really succeeded in finding it. This is the primary source I used. Probably the way they put the words (installed capacity) made me ignore the fact that the dam was probably only proposed. I just did a brief Google search on the dam, and found nothing except copies of the Wikipedia article... Maybe the dam is in fact, only planned? For a dam that is 1.7GW, and with such less reference on the internet, it is probably either a very new proposal (unlikely due to the 1980s date), or a very old "dead" proposal (of a dam that is never gonna be built). If it is the latter, I'd say we delete the article. What do you think?

It seems there is still talk of the dam. For some reason, I cannot see the link you provided above. I think www.ingetec.com.co doesn't work from my ISP which appears to be fairly common with other sites as well. I saw the specs in the Spanish version of the PDF and the picture provided was a rendition. It is tricky when they give the 1980-1983 dates but the company is a designer, not a constructor. As far as deletion, if there isn't notable controversy or talk surrounding the dam, it should be deleted or redirected. Since it doesn't exist, a redirect to List of power stations in Colombia should suffice I think. I had removed it the conventional list and replaced it with La Esmeralda Dam which I just created. I hate redlinks on that list which is part of the reason I was so motivated to get ride of them by creating dozens of articles.--NortyNort (Holla) 06:49, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Barrage

Hi Rehman! I'm writing in regard to my edit of "Barrage" disambiguation article. I recently changed the format of Barrage to redirect to the "Barrage (group)" article, as it is a famous musical show and I have no doubt it is by far the most recognizable for it's use of the name "Barrage". List of caves in Sri Lanka

There's a system bug in which properly categorized articles occasionally get picked up by the uncategorized articles list, because the database doesn't quite update correctly and the system has been temporarily fooled into thinking it's looking at a blank page. Usually it happens after a page has been moved to a new title, or a bot has reverted a page-blanking vandal — but it can usually be corrected easily, because the page drops off the list again after there's been another edit to the article (even a null edit, where you just click save without actually having changed anything, usually works.)

In this case, I don't know why the page was being picked up by the uncategorized articles list, because it was properly categorized and its edit history didn't contain any of the usual explanations for this bug, and performing follow-up edits didn't make it drop either — so I deleted the page and then restored it right away to see if that would fix the problem.
