Hi! It seems you recently created an unreferenced biography of a living person: Rod Griffin (basketball). Our verifiability policy requires that all content be cited to a reliable source. Please add references as soon as possible. Thanks! --LaraBot (talk) 00:43, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

FL for ACC player of the year[edit]

My intent was never to make it a FL (even though I noticed the similarly-themed Big East Conference page is) – I just saw how much better I knew I could make it and went for it. I'm not gonna lie, I feel pretty jaded when it comes to FL criteria. A couple months ago I nominated my first FL candidate after over 1,000 personal edits to the page. It was eye-opening to me how utterly hypocritical the reviewers were -- they were telling me to change things to make it "FL acceptable" when I saw on other already-FL pages where the "problems" I was being told did not matter. I also found it to be mind-numbing to have to go back and make minutia corrections over and over again. My biggest quandary was with the references -- apparently I still don't fully understand how to label them and what is considered a reliable source.

If you're willing to deal with all the citations to make this a FL (besides just general help), I'd be willing to try to expand the lead and do whatever I can in those departments.

By the way, other related college basketball list pages I've worked on: Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball Player of the Year, Pac-10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year, Nancy Lieberman Award, Robert V. Geasey Trophy (I've been on a college basketball awards binge lately and will probably keep plowing away at most of them). Jrcla2 talk 17:22, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. I say let's just both work on it and see what happens. I saw your William & Mary FL review. The article is very impressive. Hopefully, you can get it to FL someday. It seems too bad that it didn't get promoted. I was similarly disenchanted after the FL review on my UNC seasons article. Cheers. Remember (talk) 18:57, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ACC POY[edit]

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for the work on the page and that if I come across as irritated or snobbish with my comments, it was never my intent. I appreciate the work you're doing and I think that a lot is lost in translation when my thoughts are put into text. I'll be honest, I think this article will be a shoe-in for a FL once we get the refs finished and a peer review done. There's not too much missing as far as I can tell. It's only a matter of time. Jrcla2 talk 23:12, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I just submitted the article for a peer review. I didn't want to hop right in and submit is as a Featured List Candidate because peer reviews are generally required/encouraged to have done prior to a Featured nomination. As I said before though, the page is full of properly cited, reliable sources, it has a sufficient lead/summary length, all acronyms are explained either via a Key or the words spelled out first, and the page is visually appealing. I don't imagine this peer review will reveal many mistakes. Let's hope not, anyway. Jrcla2 talk 01:40, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Help[edit]

I don't have any familiarity with DYK procedures (the one that I contributed to was merely me adding content and references, the other editor did all the DYK-nomination dirty work). Therefore, I don't really know what it is that needs to be included/looked for when submitting one. I'm assuming you just wanted recommendations on the generality of the article? If so, here's a quick run-through list:

  1. Birth date/year missing
Can't find.
  1. Add as many categories as you see fit (for example, there are probably categories for every coaching position he's ever had, such as Category:Harvard Crimson men's basketball coaches -- remember, he doesn't have to have been a head coach to still qualify for those types of cats.)
Done
  1. The dashes between season numbers should be en dashes.
Done
  1. More inline citations are probably a good idea, but that's your call.
Done
  1. I understand this is a sandbox copy, so more editing still needs to be done on your part before you make it an article, but there are no years of coaching in the infobox. Also in the infobox, en dashes should be used between the year and the championship in the Championships section.
Can't find years.
  1. In the article's body, when a season is mentioned it is unnecessary put "1921-1922" -- it should read "1921(en dash)22" → 1921–22. By the way, the en dash is the far left dash on the toolbar at the bottom when you're on the "Insert" dropdown list.
Done
  1. WP:HEADER dictates that unless a word is usually capitalized in body text, or it's part of an official title, it should be lower case. In other words, "Living Abroad" should be "Living abroad".
Done
  1. I would merge the Family section into its own paragraph at the end of the Background section. It'd be unnecessary IMO, but you could even change the Background section header to "Background and family".
Done
  1. Another tweak that I would make would be to make the References into a {{reflist}} as opposed to what's there now. It's an aesthetic thing, but I think it looks better.
Done
  1. This has nothing to do with the article in question, but the UNC Men's Bball coaches navbox looks awkward. Basically, either all of the names with pages that do not yet exist need to be linked (so that all of them show up as red links) OR the aforementioned pages need to all be de-linked (so that they're all black text). It's confusing looking to have non-linking plain text, dead-linked red text and correctly-linked blue text all within the same navbox.
Done

Jrcla2 talk 21:10, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, not sure if you knew about this category, but Category:American military personnel of World War I would work for the article as well. Jrcla2 talk 21:42, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Done

Template:2009-10 NCAA Division I FBS football conferences[edit]

You seem like someone who has editorial interests that go along with creating an ACC page to fill in {{2009-10 NCAA Division I FBS football conferences}}.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 21:22, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Howell Peacock info discrepency[edit]

According to your book sources about Peacock (I'm assuming), he played for Georgia through 1911–12 and began coaching in 1912–13. However, according to http://statsheet.com/mcb/coaches/howell-peacock (statsheet.com is a very reliable college basketball source) he actually began his coaching career in 1911–12, amassing a 6–1 record. Now, unless he was a rare player/coach, this is a pretty big discrepency. I'm not sure how you want to handle it. Jrcla2 talk 19:55, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

According to the Georgia Media Guide See page 174 of History section, he was the captain of the 1911-1912 team and the head coach of the 1912-1913 team. So I was planning on going with that. Remember (talk) 20:22, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'd tend to lead toward the media guide, too, since that is presumably created based off the school's historical records, box scores, game programs etc. I guess we should just disregard the statsheet's data on the supposed 6–1 record. Jrcla2 talk 21:46, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Any ideas on a possible hook for the article if it becomes a DYK? The best I can think of is "Did you know that Howell Peacock coached the future Governor of North Carolina Luther H. Hodges while at the University of North Carolina?" Pretty boring, but I'm not sure there is much else of interest. Remember (talk) 14:38, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose the only other quasi-interesting hook could go something like this: "Did you know that Howell Peacock became the head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs men's basketball team the same year he graduated from there?" Kinda lame, but Peacock doesn't seem to have many DYK-worthy mentionables. Jrcla2 talk 17:30, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, unfortunately the sources don't provide much fun info for Peacock. Feel free to add your alternative hook to his DYK nomination page. Remember (talk) 17:32, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: NC Basketball Seasons[edit]

Unfortunately I'm going to have to pass on this. I have a handful of projects that I'm currently working on that will require lots of time and energy. Although I'm happy the ACC POY article became a FL, it was an excruciating amount of work to get it that way and I'm just not up for that kind of challenge again. My recommendation, however, is to post a request on the WikiProject College Basketball talk page to see if anyone bites. Good luck with the article though. Jrcla2 (talk) 16:53, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the late reply. I don't think I will have the time to do a ton of work, though I'd be glad to review and give feedback if you want. I have never done an FL article, so I'm not sure I would know I'd be giving the right kind of feedback, but I can try. Thanks Rikster2 (talk) 23:22, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fight Club[edit]

No problem. I couldn't remember that being a stipulation of moving in with him either, and the text-based convo from the scene helped to refresh my memory. No where in there does he insinuate that should the narrator not hit him that he can't stay with him (granted, it's all in the narrator's head anyway...but we're unaware of that at that point anyway :D). Plus, by the time I got there, and others came, it seemed clear that the majority agreed that the current text that was there was inaccurate. At least it appears that the heat has died down over the argument now that more people have weighed in.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 14:46, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK: Fred Boye[edit]

I just wanted to show you why I took out that sentence about the Southern Conference. If you look at the 07-08 UNC media guide records section (here), go to page 31. It shows that they didn't actually join until the 1921-22 season, but in your article it said 1920-21. Also, if you check out List of former Southern Conference members (all dates are accurate), it shows that the SoCon didn't start until 1921-22. I didn't want you thinking I had no sources for my removal of content. Jrcla2 (talk) 21:32, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I actually knew that its just I worded the article poorly. I meant to say that UNC made arrangements to join the new Sourthern Conference in the middle of the season, not that they actually had joined the conference in the season. Thanks for the edits though! Cheers! Remember (talk) 21:55, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

2010 WikiCup Signups Reconfirmation![edit]

To ensure that everyone who signed up is still committed to participating in the 2010 WikiCup, it is required that you remove your name from this list! By removing your name, you are not removing yourself from the WikiCup. This is simply a way for the judges to take note of who has not yet reconfirmed their participation. If you have not removed your name from that list by December 30th, 2009 (by 23:59 (UTC)) then your name will be removed from the WikiCup.

It's worth noting the rules have changed, likely after you signed up. The changes made thus far are:

  • Mainspace and/or portal edits will not be awarded points at all.
  • Did you know? articles (which were worth 5 points last year) will now be worth 10 points.
  • Good articles (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Valued pictures will be now awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
  • Featured lists (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Featured portals (which were worth 25 points last year) will now be worth 35 points.
  • Featured articles (which were worth 50 points last year) will now be worth 100 points.
  • Featured topics (which were worth 10 points per article last year) will now be worth 15 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • Good topics (which were worth 5 points per article last year) will now be worth 10 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • In the news will still be awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.

If you have any final concerns about the WikiCup's rules and regulations, please ask them now, before the Cup begins to avoid last minute problems. You may come to the WikiCup's talk page, or any of the judge's user talk pages. We're looking forwards to a great 2010 WikiCup! Monk McDonald[edit]

I noticed the category "American Military personnel of World War I" on his page. There is no mention of him being in the military in the page. Is that left over from the copy/paste of Fred Boye, or did he actually serve? Jrcla2 (talk) 14:22, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I noticed that you nominated the above article for good article. Unfortunately, as a stand-alone list, it doesn't qualify for "article" status and can't be a GA. I noted this on the review page as well. Consider nominating the list at featured list candidates instead. KV5 (TalkPhils) 16:27, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow![edit]

Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck!
