Just an idea...

I have recently started splitting sections from my epic masterpiece TITUS, and realized that Hawaii hotspot is, according to WP:SIZERULE, approaching that grey area of splitability. I feel that it detracts from the subject when you split an article, but some subjects need the brevity to keep from alienating the reader. Boring details turn most people off, but those who are interested would take the time to explore the sub-articles. Again, just an idea if you think it is necessary. The Characteristics section is a bit long, so that would probably be a prime candidate for its own article, the rest is ok in my opinion. --ErgoSum•talk•trib 22:15, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Sorry for the late response, but although I agreee that the article is in the gray area in the matter, it should be noted that a good 1/5 of that is in the huge table at the bottom of the article, otherwise it is tolerable. That's a nice design. I'm not the hugest fan of tan, but it's a great design, really. I'd basically like to maintain the info on my userpage (though a lot of the redundant stuff is going to disappear, like the summary of articles - unless that can be hidden or collapsed somehow). Whats required and what's not

This depends entirely on the work. Generally a citation takes one of two major forms (these examples following Turabian):

Independent works

Author. Title. Location: Publisher, Year. Page reference. Works with multiple authors obey different rules, so many authors until et.al. and and others (and how many authors before the use of et.al. in a nine author work?). Anonymous authors obey a series of rules. Corporate authors are given as corporate authors, even if they're the publisher. Year of first publication where important is usually required. Locations obey a set of rules.

More optional fields include: Many people prefer to see a DOI: where available, or ISBN. Unpublished works don't take italics for their title. Published works do. Books with multiple named volumes where only one volume is being cited normally indicate that only a particular volume is referenced, and name the volume. Numbered only volumes are numbered. Second editions or translations are usually noted. Books in Series are normally noted as such, and the series editor given. Translators are often given.

Debord, Guy; de Maupassant, Guy; Inspector Clouseau (pseud.); and others. A story about a cat. Volume 2: the cat's whiskers, trans. M. Thatcher, Stories of the World [Series] B. Brown (series ed.). Harmondsworth, UK: Penguin, 2007 (1984 English. 1977 French). See in particular 4-14.

Works contained within other works obey a different set of rules
Author. "Title." In Containing Work containing work editors or authors. (Location: Publisher, Year): Page reference. OR

Author. "Title." Journal or Newspaper Title. Volume (Issue) Year. Page reference.

Unananimous or unclear authorship

Corporate Authors are institutions which take the by line of a document. On the title page of a book, for example (not the "fly leaf" which contains only the work name, and often an author name), the authors will be listed. Corporate authors are identified by their institutional name as they write it on the title page. For example, "US Geological Survey" might commonly identify as "USGS" which could be obscure, so then you'd need to annotate it as such, "USGS [United States Geological Survey]". Your annotations, if required, go in square brackets to indicate they're not part of the author's own identification. Corporate Authors can be part of a group of authors. Morrison, Moris; Susandaughter, Susan; USGS; National Library Australia; Frankson, Frank; UNHCR [United Nations High Commission for Refugees]. Anonymous authors depend on the identification. A book could be widely known to be by someone, but they've published it as Anonymous; in which case attribute with square brackets [Marx, Karl]. Someone might merely be assumed to be the author [?Marx, Karl]. Someone might be published under the Authorial line "Anonymous." Anonymous, Anti-scientology rant on Youtube.. Someone might not have put their name in the authorial line at all. [Anonymous] My cat is a fine cat.. For corporate authors of Newspapers, sometimes articles are attributed to Wire services or Staff authors, or lack a by-line. AAP. "Article" Newspaper. Staff. "Article" Newspaper. pp. vs § and ¶

If dealing with an object without pagination; you can indicate the section of the document being discussed using § Section names or numbers or ¶ Paragraph numbers or text starting "If dealing with an object...". You can also cite lines, as in "line 13". You would use the |pages= field of {{cite book}} for this, but also need to specify a "|nopp=" (just leave it blank) to suppress the pp. header. Double Names and PDF page #s

The essential page number is the page number printed on the document. Its nice to indicate the PDF page if they haven't page numbered the PDF correctly. pp. 3-6 (pdf pp. 6-9).

With other titles, go with the title as printed on the title page. If the title is "Frankenstein Or The Modern Prometheus" then the |title= is |title=Frankenstein Or The Modern Prometheus . This could be changed by the MOS about capitalisation of course. Some style guides about rules about capitalisation in titles in citations. Some style guides have rules about 16th century type titles where the title is a paragraph long, and on how to shorten them appropriately. If the work is known by two names, but only one is on the title page, do the following Titlepage name. [Other name known as]. Subtitles and alternate titles

Subtitles are distinguished from the main title using ":" for example, Science: What's It All About?

Anonymous authors

If you've checked the Title Page for authors, and no author is given on the title page (not the fly leaf), AND if the work is a result of a government agency, THEN the authorship is corporate, and that agency. IF the work is not a work of an agency, corporation, collective, political party, trade union, ngo, etc., THEN the authorship is [Anonymous] as the author hasn't authored it as Anonymous, and we are presuming an anonymous author. Template tweak

Hope you don't mind, I made the changes suggested on the talk page to the Template:Hawaiian volcanism e.g. using the diacritics to be consistent with the bodies. Glad to see you making progress on these. What do you think about putting links to the National Parks into this template? They do need work, however. Re: Hawaii hotspot links

The main server is up, but the handle links aren't recognized because the server was down and lost the connection. I'm waiting for the handle links to come back up. I'm also in the process of contacting the administrator. The irony, of course, is that the PDF's work, but they don't want us to link to them because they are dynamic depending on the state of the repository, whereas the handles are supposed to be static. Update: According to the University of Hawaii library system, their servers are being physically moved from an old to a new server room over winter break, and the problem is unlikely to be fixed until the beginning of the year. For this reason, we should use the PDF files instead of the handles, but there is no guarantee they will contiue to work during the move. So, we are in hurry up and wait mode. GA Sweeps update

Thanks to everyone's efforts to the GA Sweeps process, we are currently over 90% done with only 226 articles remain to be swept! As always, I want to thank you for using your time to ensure the quality of the older GAs. With over 50 members participating in Sweeps, that averages out to about 4 articles per person! If each member reviews an article once a week this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. At that point, awards will be handed out to reviewers. As an added incentive, if we complete over 100 articles reviewed this month, I will donate $100 to Wikipedia Forever on behalf of all GA Sweeps participants. It really sucks that the major sources aren't available to the general public, and you have to make due with whatever else. And what your left with doesn't necessarily correlate with mainstream scientific thought. But consider yourself with access to papers now; I'm happy to be an email-order service for whatever you need for Wikipedia articles. And it's usually easy enough to find which papers you need via internet searches, so you can copy/paste lists of titles or whatever and it won't take me long to get things back to you. (outdent) FYI, Don L. Anderson (the author of at least a few major sources that you used in the Hawaii hotspot article) is famous/infamous for believing that hotspots don't exist. While he has some interesting arguments, he is certainly in opposition to most geologists. I'm down to 5 hours of sleep for the night, so I'm signing off. I think that you can fix the factual issues in the paragraph that starts "Many geophysicists" (last real paragraph in "Wilson's stationary hotspot theory" section) without hardcore sources: if you can do this, great, do it. It would be much appreciated to hear back from you because I want to remove the section that I edited and spread its info across the portion of the article on the hotspot itself. If not, I'm going to have to strongly oppose its promotion and request its close. The reason is that it will take me a while to make all of the necessary changes, and since I don't currently have much intrinsic interest in this topic, I'll burn out a lot more if I try to do it all quickly than if the FAC closes and I have time to do it slowly. However, if you can help check textbook-style facts (e.g., above), it will lessen my workload and convince me of your interest in improving the article during this round of FAC, which will keep me motivated to do it quickly. February GA Sweeps update

GA Sweeps Completed!

Thanks to everyone's amazing efforts in February, we have reviewed all of the articles and are now finished with Sweeps! There are still about 30 articles currently on hold, and once those reviews are completed, I will send you a final message about Sweeps process stats including the total number of articles that were passed and failed. If you have one of these open reviews, be sure to update your count when the review is completed so I can compile the stats. You can except to receive your award for reviewing within the next week or two. Although the majority of the editors did not start Sweeps at the beginning in August 2007 (myself included), over 50 editors have all come together to complete a monumental task and improve many articles in the process. I commend you for sticking with this often challenging task and strengthening the integrity of the GA WikiProject as well as the GAs themselves. I invite you to take a break from reviewing (don't want you to burn out!) and then consider returning/starting to review GANs and/or contribute to GAR reviews. With your assistance, we can help bring the backlog down to a manageable level and help inspire more editors to improve articles to higher classes and consider reviewing themselves. I guess I haven't. Kinda gave up on what's probably the second most stressful thing on the wiki after candidacy for adminship, WP:FA. Nothing I do really goes through at all. Feedback is low, activity is low, anyone actually caring is low with the majority of the stuff I do. I dunno man its so SLOW.

Thought about quitting this volcano crap with the 0 work activity (I can summarize 90% of what goes on in naming like 4 people) but yeah milist has its issues too. Mainly, holy crap where am I supposed to get sources when I don't have a freaking public library in the my living room.

I have a working hypothesis: 2010 Haiti earthquake, 2010 Chile earthquake, 2010 eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull, Katla erupts, Southwest Pacific earthquake (New Zealand or Sumatra), "Big One" San Andreas Fault earthquake, and it breaks a leak open in the Yellowstone magma chamber. The lure, "the end of the Cold War"; 9/11; Afghanistan War, Iraq War, Subprime mortgage crisis, 2010 European sovereign debt crisis. These are major events and they end the 1950-2010 cycle. Earthquakes on the other hand are just arithmetics & engineering, you can't change a plate on a surface of a globus without changing many others as well. Template:Hawaiian volcanism

Hi,

I'm glad to see you are not completely retired. Volcanoes on Wikipedia would have been poorer without you. I was pleased to see that Loihi made it to the main page, largely due to your efforts.

About three weeks ago, I proposed on its discussion page that Template:Hawaiian volcanism should be renamed, because I think its current name is ambiguous. We have approached the content of the template from different viewpoints in the past :-) I'd be interested in your views on this. Thanks.

Hualālai

Welcome back. Not sure which issue you are addressing? One is that File:Hualalai from north.jpg seems to be a picture of Mauna Loa, since it looks like the grassy plain of Parker Ranch around Waimea, Hawaii County, Hawaii in the foreground. The upload comment mentions Waimea, and Mauna Kea is very visible from there, although there might be someplace where Hualālai can be seen, it is not likely. North it is the dry saddle, not grass. The pic was uploaded in 2004 and the user not active since 2007. So I would vote to remove that picture.

I would replace it with the File:Hualālai 1996.jpg pic which is known to come from USGS. The only nit with that one is that its USGS page says it was taken from Kuki'i beach, which is probably a typo. Kuki'i is on the other side of Mauna Loa, which is green. This is clearly a leeward lava flow and new road, so I assumed it was from Kuki'o beach, on the 1801 flow.

Now a pic from the top of Mauna Kea would be great; I never went there. But these two clearly are not. And since the vog was so heavy all my pics are hazy of Hualālai. A pic from the saddle should also work if you can find one of those.

While you were out I worked on the Kaupulehu, Hawaii article, widening its scope from the previous one on the Four Seasons Hotel there (which caused a flap with a certain editor, so I backed off the Hawaii project a bit). I would suggest changing the Hualālai article to not mention just the Kona Village resort (that was just the first one, there are now the Four Seasons and Kuki'o there), but be historically accurate and say the flow destroyed most of the former settlement of Kaʻūpūlehu, since there was a very historic event there just ten years earlier. Also mention the Huehue flow which formed the Keahole Point area where the airport is now. And somewhere should point out that the slopes are a prime growing area for Kona coffee!

It seems very incorrect to say the Kona Village Resort "witnessed the 1801 event" since the resort was built in 1961. Did they have a time machine? I think it was just that Kona Village was the only resort built on the flow at the time the 1974 report was written. It does not support your claim, so I will try to fix. Also very misleading to say it is "pocketed by several major resorts" since the resorts are on the coast, not near the volcano itself. They could still get over-run by lava, but that is already stated.

Not sure what your question is of the the 2006 Hawaii earthquake? It's epicenter was in the ocean offshore of Kiholo Bay, actually near the Māhukona volcano, and the 6.0 aftershock was essentially under the suspected summit of Māhukona. To claim it was somewhat related to Hualālai would of course take a reliable source that says so. Most of the damage seems to have been in the Kohala district, but not sure why. What is probably needed in the body is a mention of how Hualālai lava flows have covered up the earlier Māhukona, making it much harder to study. W Nowicki (talk) 19:59, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
