NHLPA source

To be honest, Wikipedia does not work in trades. If there is no consensus for changing the templates, then they don't change. Same with the diacritics issue. Unless you can convince the community to accept a change, then the status quo will remain. Resolute 15:22, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Team captains

Well if I wanted to quickly know who captained the Flames in say, '96, then I could search List of Calgary Flames captains. But instead, I have to seach List of Calgary Flames players, and continue to scroll through the huge list trying to find it. If I wanted to find a chronological list, I wouldn't be able to. COI image placement by IANA.org image: Premier of British Columbia

This is a tricky one I'm not sure how to interpret it, but I don't like what I'm smelling. I noticed some IP edits at Premier of British Columbia, all from today, by User:174.7.14.105, involving changing/tweaking the image of Gordon Campbell with the final in-line hidden comment see in this edit, which says "do not replace this by an unfree (i.e. "fair use" image)". Quite the demand for an IP editor; I know there've been disputes about the Stephen Harper photo, and also I think about Campbell's photos in the past. So being the suspicious type, and knowing that the Public Affairs Bureau are active in Wikipedia, I looked up the IP address to see where it is...SamSpade.org gave me "ERROR: IP Range Reserved by IANA.org" which got me looking up http://www.iana.org, which was interesting to find, so I went and looked it up in ARIN which told me it was routed via shawcable in Calgary (as all Shawcable is, or rather that's their registered DBA address; FWIU cable IPs can't be tracked to households, as the whole "loop" in a neighbourhood is the same IP...). So I went back to http://www.whois.net and tried Ripe and learned that IANA.org addresses are global in nature and common in many countries...i.e. untraceable. Fine, not really an issue, almost more of a confirmation for conspiracy-minded types (like me). But I followed through the image to see whose it was, i.e. was it an official portrait being substituted for the casual one (with its nice jowls)? Well, no it's not, not exactly anyway. The author for File:Gordon_Campbell.jpg is Mary McNeil, a Liberal candidate in the last provincial election, and as you can see her flick profile is spam-like in nature or "political brochure" in nature. "Source" is given as Mary NcNeil and Premier Gordon Campbell, which is a campaign portrait of the two of them. It doesn't surprise me at all that politicians have begun to use Flickr's UGC arena in the same way they try to use Wikipedia; but to me this image comes with clear evidence of both WP:COI and WP:AUTO. Another issue on the Premier of British Columbia page is whether or not the current Premier is necessarily due the pride of place of being the only portrait; surely Richard McBride, Amor de Cosmos, Duff Pattullo, WAC Bennett are more notable; the jury is out as to whether the current Premier is in the same league of notoriety as Bill Vander Zalm; but it does strike me that having Campbell's face displayed on a page about the position of the provincial first minister is too close to promotional in nature to be entirely acceptable. I could have raised this at PPAP but because of our earlier dealings over the Premier's bio article I thought of you to bring it to first; as to what tags to place, whether that image belongs in Wikipedia at all, given its COI/AUTO source and the political content on the links provided on the image page. The same IP user's contributions show a spate of things on Prime Minister of Canada although in that case the image is from the G8 summit in Helgendamm; but it has been used in a "regal" fashion and again I must question whether or not it's really fair, or right, that the current Prime Minister's image be used alone, with no context relating to notable former Prime Ministers....Wikipedia is being systematically used as a promotional venue, to put it bluntly, and I don't like it one bit; I come across insertions of images of these guys and/or mentions of them all over the place, in totally unseemly places like smalltown articles where their latest visit is given undue weight ("Gordon Campbell slept here",as it were, "Stephen Harper cut a ribbon here"). But actively replacing images carrying credits to political canddiates, placed by those candidates; that seems outside the rulebook. Since I began this post, the same IP user, presumably Ms McNeil though that's unprovable, has made further edits at Prime Minister of Canada.....using an internationally anonymous IP address is a way to mask COI/AUTO, to be sure, but it's still obvious given teh SPA nature of those edits....Skookum1 (talk) 02:28, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Photography

I see that you have been working hard getting photographs for Wikipedia. The player photos are particularly valuable as there is a distinct lack of openly licensed pictures of sports players. Splitting List of TEAM players up

Considering you did List of Calgary Flames players, I was wondering what you thought of splitting these lists into individual lists for each position, (e.g. List of Calgary Flames goaltenders, List of Calgary Flames defenseman, etc.) The main lists are very, very long and splitting it up by position seems logical to me. Yeah, that's an odd one. I just redirected it to the players list. I suppose if it came down to it, the goaltenders and skaters would be easy to split, but ideally, I will someday reformat that list to allow for it to be sorted. It would be nice to keep all skaters together so that the stats can be maintained. Though that would be admittedly harder for a team with a lot more history. Resolute 00:06, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Seems my comment and your Pilots comment has wp:baseball freaking out. They are all upset that people might come along and say you have to split because that's how hockey does it. It's not going to happen, sadly. It should, but history is being cheated for the sake of convenience. As there is little chance of that bloc ever changing their mind, I prefer only to focus on my little corner of the baseball world that they don't care much about anyway, and let them manage the MLB articles as they see fit, aside from the Expos, of course. 2009–10 Calgary Flames season

Hi, I don't get your last edit to the article. You basically reverted changes to the pre-season table you made yourself, changes I think were justified. I restored the table to it's former format so it matches the other tables in the article. In an old discussion of last season's articles it was agreed that individual recaps of matches was not desirable as one external link to all recaps would suffice. The naming of teams is also off in regards to the format of the regular season tables. I hope you don't mind me changing the pre-season table to what is was. If you don't agree, feel free to revert, I won't start an edit-war over this, I just thought it was weird what you did and think you did it in error. Btw your edit also introduced an error as far as dates for the games are concerned, I changed it according to the schedule found on flames.nhl.com.--Fogeltje (talk) 04:53, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

... to ask but Resolute — The master Calgarian ice hockey editor? I'm wondering if you are interested in quickly assisting me in a little wiki related project of mine. I want to bring the Fredrik Pettersson article from a stub class to a short quality article (what GA used to be), before the season starts. And I have had trouble finding usable information about his two-year stint in Calgary. I think I recalled him being an alternate captain during his second season, but I can't find anything. So I you have some spare time, could you possibly write a few lines about his career with the Hitmen? And preferably put on my talk page or in a sandbox, because I want to get a DYK but I haven't figured out what information to use yet. Except for those two years in Calgary he has spent his entire life playing for Frölunda, which is quite uncommon, even extraordinary for any Elitserien team to have a player that started out playing novice hockey for the club. Dictionary definition of "Throughout"

Please see Talk:National_Hockey_League#North_American for a discussion of the dictionary definition of "throughout" and why this usage must therefore be reliably sourced to be used to describe the locations of the NHL's 30 franchises. If they were in fact distributed "throughout North America" (as opposed to only the US & Canada) then by definition there would have to be franchises located in México, Central American, and the West Indies as well. Both the article and talk pages for Talk:1968-69 WCHL season (with a hyphen) and 1968-69 Western Canada Hockey League season should redirect to 1968–69 WCHL season. I just retargeted the new redirect you left at Talk:1968-69 Western Canada Hockey League season. Please move Talk:1968-69 WCHL season on top of Talk:1968–69 WCHL season and all will be fine. There's nothing to be lost by overwriting Talk:1968–69 WCHL season because there is no history and the lone template on the page is already on the incoming page. Thanks! That was a year and a half ago, heh. It is understood that dynamic IP's will receive warnings that do not necessarily reflect the actions of the current user. Looks that way

Not thrilled about that as an editor, though it will be sort of nice to be able to get the Stelmach article into a more stable form. As for the WRA, the only other thing I can think of is something about its internal governance structure, though I suspect much of that would be available only in primary sources. Surprisingly, there doesn't seem to be a single GA on a western (that's western world, not western Canada) political party, so there's not much by way of template to follow. I'm rather overcommitted on Wikipedia at the moment (the Fleury FAC's on me to-do list, though there's no guarantee that I'll actually get there), but if you want me to take a look at it before you throw it at GAN, I could probably manage that (it'll be short, right?).

I'm normally not anal about layout things (although I do tend to pay attention to layout, probably a little more then some others), but when a layout issue starts affecting the actual article text... something's gotta be done, you know?

WikiCup 2010 and Dermatology-related content

I noticed that you are participating in the 2010 WikiCup. I have been working on the Bolognia push which is a project to make sure Wikipedia has an article (or redirect) on every know cutaneous condition. Glad to hear it is going well in the Greater-Calgary area... it is still stupid here... 36 Jr. A teams in two leagues... all in the Toronto-area... while we have better teams in more supportive centres in the Jr. B GOJHL in Southwestern Ontario... ... ... we just tried to merge the GOJHL, CCHL, and OJAHL and then create a new elite division of around 16-20 teams (while the rest basically drop to Jr. B)... and the teams of the CCHL and OJAHL blocked it... they claim they will downsize themselves... but they are leaving the GOJHL in the cold... teams like the London Nationals, Brantford Eagles, Waterloo Siskins, or St. Catherines Falcons would far better represent our nick of the woods if they were given the chance. Most regrettably, even the most dedicated inclusionists will have to concede that the article may have to go if the creator or major contributors cannot justify their work.
For new and recent unsourced BLPs, some users are now working at WT:BLP PROD TPL on the development of templates that are designed to encourage contributors to source new BLPs, without scaring away the newbies who might not be aware of the rules. This template is certainly not another a licence to kill for the deletionists, in fact the very idea of it is to ensure that you are not fighting a losing battle. It would be great if you could look in at the prgogress and maybe leave a word of encouragement. The workshop page is essentially a template development taskforce, and is not a place to engage in a hefty debate on incusion/deletion policy. There's a different Commons photo of Jamie with the same name. The bot tagged it, but hasn't deleted it. Could you get rid of the duplicate Wikipedia file? Thanks so much. Pre-emptive indefinite semi-protection of John Laws

Hello,

I would like to draw your attention to a case of pre-emptive indefinite semi-protection that I find unjustified.

The protecting admin has been challenged about it. Only after the issue was reported to WP:RUP did the admin come up with something resembling an explanation, which was accepted by the investigating admin. The justification was in my opinion extremely flimsly: "there has been in the last varying degrees of speculation in tabloid press and elsewhere".

As you may remember, pre-emptive semi-protections were recently rejected (scroll down) due to an evident lack of consensus. Not only that, but this justification falls even short of that proposal, since it's not clear to me how unreferenced "speculation in tabloid press and elsewhere" is a "high-profile event that has a history of drawing vandalism".

I have to agree with SoWhy's reasoning. I agree that the protection is without merit, but you can't argue against Casliber's actions based on policy then canvass to try and reinforce your point, which is also against policy.
