Difference between antisemitism and racism[edit]

Antisemitism has nothing to do with racism since Jews are white, so hating a Jew is not racism. Not at all offended. I'm impressed that you read my changes in virtual sync with my making them.
My wife, who is Swedish, was over there this summer but stayed entirely "nykter" (sober). So the information I had was anachronistic. The government is out of money and may be pushing the booze to get some "pengar" (money). Additionally we have seen a number of changes to harmonize to EU requirements. I assume that Systembolaget is still closed on election days. I am certain that the smuggling business has continued as usual, now facilitated by the gleaming bridge between Denmark and the "folkhemmet." We take special note of the fact that, when Sweden entered the EU, the few Swedish taxes which were below the EU norm were raised to meet it but the ones which were above stayed there.

What I added to the article comes from personal experience in the culture as I have been married to it for over 25 years. You are welcome to insert any published sources of which you are aware and certainly to correct or eliminate any misleading phraseology or inaccurate information.

To establish the equation between cajuns and cajunes, see http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caj%C3%BAn . The transition from cajunes to coonass is not the sort of etymology that easily submits to dignified and written scholarship, but I'll see what I can find. You probably know more about than I do. Cajunes is actually related to the Cajun term coullon, the latter meaning a silly or foolish person; it's a relatively benign term (coullon, I mean) despite the anatomical orgin it shares with cajunes.

Red link removal[edit]

Re:this edit - in general, it is a bad idea to remove red links. Free speech zone links to Strom Thurmond Jr., as does the article on his father. Therefore, it's probably notable enough to deserve an artilce. By removing red links, you reduce the ability for others to know what articles need to be written. I agree to a point, Raul654, and do not remove a red link uncritically. When I do remove such a link, I almost always substitute a working link to another Wikipedia domain (preferable) or to a credible domain outside Wikipedia. I will try to restrain that practice.

An additional concern is that frequently an external link simply serves to authenticate the linked item. To insert a red internal link followed by a reference (superscript, note) which merely cites an external link appears a peculiar and cumbersome behavior, heedless of the way a single external link can do both jobs.

If your experienced opinion was to reinsert the red link in the instance you cite, you are certainly welcome to do so. I indeed appreciate your close reading and criticism.

Wikipedia also calls for correct spelling, a behavior we all should consider with respect to situations like artilce.

The philosophy that all red links should become English Wikipedia articles will lead ultimately to a Wikipedia article on every individual who has ever lived. Maybe that's not necessarily a bad idea, but it would certainly occupy and redundify a lot of magnetic room.

Perhaps what is needed is a category for external links which need to be replaced by internal Wikipedia links once the related Wikipedia articles are written and posted. Such a provision would obviate the dilemma of having to choose between a sore-thumb red link and an external link which obscures the need for a Wikipedia article. The provision would also eliminate the attractiveness of the writer's/editor's forming no link whatever (so that there's no redness in the article) in situations where the link would indicate the need for a new article.

In the future, it is advisable to make all your changes at once, either by working on the article in a subpage of yours, or working on the article directly and saving all your changes at once. Good advice, but I'm not unlike a lot of other editors even if I find some of them just making changes with a priority on racking up as many hits as possible. But the Joseph Cao article is a developing story, with the election going on right now. I just wanted to expand on my reasoning here and at Joseph Cao. Generally, congressional staff aren't considered notable, unless they have distinguished themselves in some other fashion. Ted Kaufman did not receive an article until being appointed Senator, for example. With respect to including congressional staff in articles about a representative, I once proposed including chiefs of staff, legislative directors, etc. in the infoboxes, but other editors at the Project Congress recommended against it for the same reasons I've stated. As far as adding the information back because Brooke Bennett has an article, wikipedia is not considered a reliable source. So just because an article exists somewhere on Wikipedia, it doesn't mean the subject is notable for inclusion elsewhere on wikipedia. Please see WP:Notability for more information. You're probably right about Bennett. I'm more concerned to preserve the references. Will take a look at the Cao article later to see whether it can be flexed to meet everyone's wishes. If you delete the Bennett article, please convert the links to her in other articles to external links. On your userpage you indicate that "My interests border on the electic." I'm not sure why we need the references either, unless the references are being used as a source for a different part of the article unrelated to staff members. As far as making external links to Bennett, that would run contrary to WP:External Links against inline external links and overlinking. My arguement is that there is no place to mention Joseph Cao's or any other congressional staff members in any articles, unless that staff member has made a name for him or herself outside of being a staff member or if they became notable as a staff member for other reasons. For example, a Cantwell staffer arrested on child porn charges a few years ago or the intern in Mike DeWine's office that was fired due to a blogging scandal.DCmacnut <> 22:30, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The references have a place in that they are about several matters in Cao's setting up his office. But there are also other scholarly reasons to preserve a bibliographic record. As time goes on and the number of citations grows, Wikipedia cannot be expected to include all of them, but those at the foundation of Cao's congressional career are bedrock and lend credibility which other articles would do well to emulate. Date format on Joseph Cao[edit]

Regardless of your opinion on Year Month Day date format, it is not one of the accepted date formats on Wikipedia per MOS:DATE. As I noted in Talk:Joseph Cao#Date format, Wikipedia only uses international (Day Month Year) or American (Month Day, Year) date formats in article text. ISO 8601 date format (YYYY-MM-DD) can be used in references, but with the end of linking dates for autoformatting this format has fallen "out of fashion" so to speak and there are now scripts that will change ISO 8601 format in references to MDY or DMY format. It looks like another editor has reverted your change back to MDY format, so if you want the article to use YMD format, please do so in the discussion I linked above. I disagree, and I am not alone. There are numerous articles where the first major contributor opted for Julian dates. See, for example, the article on Bruno Hauptman. Yes, edit warring is indeed unacceptable, and I was not the one who started the war. During the last 3 months I have devoted many hours to this article. Then abruptly a probably well meaning and intelligent person decided to go through it and change the date format, in some cases getting 2008 and 2009 confused. I'm surely a lousy person and have a lot to learn, but, even amid the absence of a kind word in the criticism of my contributions to the article, I went back through and straightened out that confusion. I am a very busy person and lack the time to engage in repetitions of a pyrrhic skirmish. Anyone who has the time to be interested in it is welcome to read the "Edit summary" reasons, which may or may not have been read before. Julian dates, including with the month spelled in letters for clarity, are spreading worldwide although more slowly in the United States, and even there they are provided for by Microsoft and Dell and required by American Psychological Association (APA) attribution style, the most widely used in scholarly journals. Being heretofore unaware that something like a date format could arouse feelings equivalent to religious intensity, and having more significant matters to deal with—such as family and job—in a world which faces challenges like pollution and genocide, I wish to experience no more time tied up in this late-arriving controversy about date formats on Joseph Cao. Please don't add Category:Louisiana politicians to people who are already in a subcategory such as Category:Members of the Louisiana House of Representatives or Category:New Orleans Councilmembers. I appreciate the opinion. In the interest of getting "all the nuances across," you IMHO understated the case as much as I had overstated it. Wellhausen was explicit about his quick attraction to the concept that the Jewish law was not what it was cracked up to be. But he is only a pawn on the chessboard of players that the Nazis appropriated for their evil mission: the New Testament, several church councils and Popes, Chrysostom, Ferdinand & Isabella, Luther, Wagner, Nietzsche, the apocryphal Protocols of the Elders of Zion, whatever sources could be wrenched (even out of context) to a purpose aimed at genocide. A corollary was also prevalent—that because Jews were to be perceived (in the Nazi Weltanschauung) as inferior, any source which said as much was deemed credible. Your content does not actually have a source listed. This is a major problem, since someone like me may want to challenge your addition as WP:POV. I have another item of caution for you. In the Carrie Jacobs-Bond article, you have been adding inline external links to youtube videos. First and most important, you cannot legally add links to copyright violations per WP:ELNEVER. Highlighted in the guideline: This is particularly relevant when linking to sites such as YouTube, where due care should be taken to avoid linking to material that violates its creator's copyright. So the only circumstances where you could add a link is if the link was to an article/video/song which was created in the U.S. before 1923. Another allowable link would be if you are certain and can prove that the video/image/article/song is published by the real original author. Second, inline external links are frowned upon. Per the external links guideline: "2. External links should not normally be used in the body of an article. Instead, include appropriate external links in an "External links" section at the end of the article, and in the appropriate location within an infobox, if applicable." I appreciate how you're trying to give good citation on references that you've added. However, you are adding commentary references to the Carrie Jacobs-Bond article (diff). I hope you're will to use the citation templates. They make adding citations real easy. They ensure that the citations that you add are up to Good and Featured Article standards. The easiest way to use them is to click "My Preferences" on the upper right hand side of the screen. Then click "Gadgets" tab on the right. In the "Editing gadgets" section, add a check mark to "REFTOOLS- adds a "cite" button to the editing toolbar for quick and easy addition of commonly used citation templates." Then a new button will appear on the toolbar above the editing that says {{CITE}}. Position the insert point where you want to add the citation, then click the button. Select web, news, or book to add a new reference. Fill in the fields. If you want to use that same reference a second time in the article, make sure you add a "Reference name". You appear to be fabricating claims that Bardwell has paraplegia, was born with no knees, walks on his thighs, etc. I Googled "Keith Bardwell paraplegia" to see if this was really true, and the only meaningful results I could find were the two articles (Keith Bardwell and List of paraplegic people) that you had added these claims to. Not only that, but Bardwell is also a carpenter and I don't think that there are very many (if any) paraplegic carpenters out there. Therefore, it looks like you are making these claims up.

In addition to being dishonest, this is a blatant violation of WP: BLP. Just because you personally dislike him and his views (as I also do) does not mean you can make statements like that without any evidence. The sources you have been using to "back up" these claims, in fact, make no such statements about Bardwell's health. At last count (I read the deletion discussion yesterday) there were more votes to keep than to delete although several voters on both sides recommended renaming the article so as to emphasize the incident instead of the man. Consequently I created a REDIRECT called "Bardwell incident" which could be populated as the main article. You're right to warn against petitioning the gatekeeper, because the evidence so far has been that democracy is not necessarily considered welcome or even desirable. Nonetheless, wiking the article out entirely is not a reasonable alternative. Writers whose legitimacy is above reproach had dedicated many hours to creation of an article which thousands of readers were finding useful. It was the one source on the 'net where people could find a dispassionate attempt to contextualize the situation and to provide more information than just what the man did and how he is horrible. Semicolons and emphasis[edit]

Hello. Whilst I very much support your efforts to encourage the correct use of the semicolon, I do not understand why adding bold to them, like this and this, would be a good idea. I don't want semicolons to look like commas. Otherwise I agree with you. Maybe, where possible, the preference would be to use periods (full stops). The main problem, however, is to rid the encyclopedia of comma splices. Periods and commas are never interchangeable. I think I understand your point but I don't think that adopting a personal typographic convention will stick - not unless you want to try to get it adopted as part of the MoS! I do love to see semicolons and colons properly used so I'd be a bit sad to see them replaced by full stops. As for the mystery of people who know enough to write but not enough to write well - yes, it's sad, but I suppose that's why we have subeditors, wikipedia punctuation nerds, and the like. I saw an article today, about a railway station in England, which I think would have made you feel quite unwell. It consisted of good information with horrible presentation: I feel as if I'll need a day off before I look at it again. Oh well ... and thanks again for the reply. Fred Luter[edit]

I cannot get DerivativeFX to work. But the idea is still that the photograph needs brightening. I don't think cropping will help much or even at all, including to display just Luter himself. I'm not sure, Jonas Vinther. I have forgotten what happened with that redirect. The term "useless eaters" is nonetheless associated with Julius Streicher as an epithet he used against Jews. But didn't he use that expression before publication of Der Giftpliz? I'll be interested in your response, and I think maybe your knowledge may be more eclectic than mine. Well, according to Laurence Rees, Hitler and the top Nazi chieftains coined the phrase "useless eaters" to describe the Jews. I haven't read Der Giftpliz nor do I know anything in particular about Streicher. I was wondering if the phrase itself would deserve an article? I can see that the expression "useless eaters" has had referents broader than just the Jews in the Third Reich. See http://rense.com/general78/philo.htm . Louisiana Highway 10[edit]

After your last edit to the article, there are still 11 junctions listed in the infobox. In the case of long highways with many important junctions, it is often necessary to omit all but interstates and U.S. highways. See New York State Route 22, assessed as a Featured Article by WP:USRD, for an example of this. The fact that LA 21 and LA 25 are federal aid routes does not mean they should be included because US 51 is not. It's about the route class. Thanks for your nice explanation, Britinvasion64. I agree with you thus far and appreciate that you are educating me. I would only point out that LA 25 is a designated hurricane evacuation route. US 51 isn't. Furthermore, US 51 has become essentially a street connecting the towns in Tangipahoa Parish, but the traffic on it is mostly drivers going a short distance. Late in the evenings, the traffic signals at the junction of US 51 and LA 16 in downtown Amite (Amite City) blink red to 51 and green to 16 because of traffic counts. US 51 runs parallel to I-55 except in some cases of concurrence. US 51 long ago lost its strategic significance down here and is now a Federal Aid Secondary except in cases of concurrence with I-55. No need exists in the LA 10 box to indicate both I-55 and US 51. If I were you, I would drop US 51 from the list there and instead list LA 25. I realize the psychology that US-numbered routes somehow have pre-eminence over state routes, but I live in the area and vouch that LA 25 is nowadays more significant that US 51. You bring up some good points. It's hard sometimes juggling the rules vs. what makes sense in a particular situation. (I'm trying to get some of these LA highway articles assessed as Good Articles soon.) I just didn't want to start a domino effect where if you include this one, now you have to include that one, etc. But I think I have a solution that will work for everyone. I combined each concurrency to a single line, freeing up room for LA 25 and two other state highways along the route I felt were notable as well. What do you think? Yes, Britinvasion64, really nice. I agree with you. My earlier observation had to do with the eastern part of the Florida Parishes, but in retrospect I know that LA 13 is an important and highly trafficked road, and you apparently realized that LA 1 together with LA 10 forms the potentially forthcoming Zachary Taylor Parkway. Indeed, the Audubon Bridge which bears LA 10 over the Mississippi River is the only such bridge between Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Natchez, Mississippi; thus LA 1, just west of the Bridge, is one of the more significant junctions for LA 10. As you, Britinvasion64, are no doubt well aware, almost all state highways in Louisiana were renumbered in 1955. The current routings are in many instances just a cobbling together (look, e.g., at LA 16, hardly the route a sane person would take between its termini), but it was a definite improvement over the prior chaos, which, among other anomalies, included road numbers that abruptly changed in the middle of nowhere. It certainly was a crazy system in many respects. And they seem to have added so many useless (to the motoring public) routes each year until there were over 2200 by the time of the renumbering. Picture of Lewis Hartsough[edit]

It would be good to add a picture of Lewis Hartsough to the article that we worked on last year. The only image that I can find is here. The same image is on several other websites. However, I am unsure of the copyright position. The image would be public domain in the USA if it were published before 1923, see Public domain in the United States. Hartsough died in 1919, but it is possible that this image was first published after 1923. It looks like a photograph, but it could be a painting. Anyway, I suspect it was from a book or a newspaper. Have you seen it in a pre-1923 book or newspaper? If so, please let me have a reference. If we cannot establish that it is public domain then we could probably include it on the basis of "fair use", see Wikipedia:Non-free content, but this more awkward and less satisfactory. March Madness 2017[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.
