SailRail

Happy New Year Ritchie. Can't believe I've just spotted this, given I scan WT:DYK every day...! I will have to dig through old papers, but expect more additions to the article today/tomorrow, including confirmation that SailRail is the official brand (that seems to be one of the sticking points on the nom, I think?). I might rework it a bit with a separate section for the non-Ireland stuff. Depends what info I turn up. I can also offer a "cleaner" image of a ticket from my own collection: will upload that. I started the article a few months back, surprised there wasn't one, and ran out of sources so I didn't know how to progress any further - I think there was just about enough information to get it out of "stub" class and towards a DYK nom. Basically, having read about SailRail on seat61.com, I persuaded a group of us to go on a trip to Dublin, we met up with Smirkybec and had an enjoyable evening in the pub chatting about Irish history, architecture, and who knows what else, and I suggested writing the article as part of the conversations there. I've got the AFK - DFP tickets on me, and I guess you can have them if you pop along to one of the London meet-ups and I'm there. Done about as much as I can for now, although I feel there may be more to write on the pre-SailRail brand history if I look through older Journals (not sure how relevant it would be though). I have often been tempted to visit my relatives in the Glens of Antrim by using a SailRail; Hove to Ballymena via Holyhead/Dublin is only £64.80, and I would get some very interesting rail mileage in... I have accepted the draft, after doing my own Google News search and finding a number of dedicated pieces, including one in the Italian Rolling Stone about him. That's probably enough to meet the acceptance criteria for mainspace. Simply not having many English sources is not reason in itself to not have an article. notability and FRSA/MBE

Hey, Ritchie! Would these awards support a plausible claim to notability all by themselves (at Tommy Miah)? Pretty much every source is questionable, I'm not finding much on the googlz, and to me from Order of the British Empire and Royal Society of the Arts it looks like these are not awards that would get one over the hump in the absence of anything else. Yes, I was taking a short break, no real reason other than I've just been busy elsewhere doing odds and ends and not really had the hours to sit down and do some writing / researching. Anyway, I had a look for sources, and there probably is enough stuff to put together a short encyclopedia article. I'm a bit concerned about stuff like this which, if that is a BLP compliant source (I don't know anything about the Dhaka Tribune but it looks like it is) then it needs to be cited with care. Yeah, the arrest is iffy for including, it isn't being covered much in RS and at this point it's just a dispute over payment for services. I'm more wondering if the guy's really even notable. Good to see that. I did have a "stop the war" banner of my user page for a bit, but I feel even more strongly that the war has got to end, ideally with victory for Ukraine but a mutual armistice with a completely different Russian government would do. Then extradite Putin to The Hague so he can be tried for war crimes. Elsewhere, I expanded Empire of Light that I recently saw at the cinema, and think the mixed / negative reviews that said the "tribute to the magic of cinema is disappointingly mundane" kind of missed what the film was really about, in my view Ritchie333 ^(talk) ^(cont) 12:29, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

What broke my interest was that Galina Pisarenko was rejected (first) as not interesting, which looks like censoring to me. Finally hook #19 was taken saying that she studied economy and Norwegian along with voice. How is that interesting?? Look at my present top: that was a real hook in 2012 when my friend had died. Today, we probably would have discussed for weeks and ended up saying that he learned Greek while getting ready to run the family business. Just sad. I work for Recent deaths now (where Pisarenko came from). How many died in the few days of this young year that I took care of? New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello Ritchie333,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

Suggestions:

There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

I'm slowly getting back into the things and back at work full-time now; today I think is the first day when I can type an extended reply or conversation, though I still need to rest my arm for a bit afterwards. It will get better, it's just been a bit of a shock all round as you might imagine. Actually, one of the things that doesn't need a lot of manual work is Martinevans123's CCI, which seems to have ground to a halt. I think we need to get that completed if we're ever going to see any chance of him getting unblocked. One of my colleagues, who I've been working with closely for several decades, died last week, and yes it does feel like a shock. As regards Martin, I suspect Diannaa - and indeed, the general community consensus, would probably take completion of the SPI, along with convincing evidence that Martin understands copyright as it relates to Wikipedia, before any unblock can be entertained. Please assume good faith, I am not looking to start a fight and the fact that I immediately came to your talk page shows that I'm wanting to be civil by trying to understand your reasoning. In the past I have targeted a number of unreliable sources and removed them from multiple articles. In the past couple of weeks I have managed to spot some serious sockpuppetry involved in reference spamming. I loathe spam and I think it's really important that we use proper, reliable references. "I loathe spam" Aww jeez, not that cliche again. :-( If that is really what you think, then you are suffering from burnout and need to take a break and do something else. Go for a walk, listen to music, take the wife out to dinner, cuddle a cat, write some code - anything really. Come back to Wikipedia when you are calm and relaxed.

Now, I'm going to take one of the examples given, in this case your edit to Trafalgar Square here where you removed a source but not the text that the reference supported. So you left the article with a source from 1840 citing something that claims to have happened in 1928. That's clearly factually incorrect and so your edit made the article worse. It's not hard to work out that the text was added on 03 February 2022 by 2A01:4B00:848C:A600:E990:CFBA:7E90:F94F (talk · contribs), which looks to me like somebody who just wanted to add some random fact on Wikipedia that they thought was worth recording as a one-off action, that they didn't think was worth bothering registering an account for - and why not? After all, we're assuming good faith, right? ;-)

Having said all of that, if you had something like this : "I'm concerned about the claim that the police observation room being established 19 March 1928, which is only cited to IanVisits. I can't find any other reference to this date in any books or news reports that I've looked at. Do you have an additional source of information?" (and especially if you'd prefaced it with "Hi, Ritchie! Hope you're feeling well and the arm's healing okay.") I'd have probably said something like, "Good catch, this was added by an IP just over a year ago, and I can't see any other source for it, so I've removed it". But because you came here and acted like a complete jerk with a temper tantrum, without understanding the actual issues behind the content (cf: WP:CIVIL - comment on the content, not the contributor), I'm less amenable to help. I wanted to go into detail, because I hoped that it would lead to an understanding. However, it's not difficult for me to find additional sources that name-check Ian Mansfield, such as BBC News, or publish work by him, such as The Guardian. I also note that Ian Mansfield lists his full name, address and journalist credentials on his website, including selected mainstream publications on his website, so I am going to go further and say your accusation of him as a "spammer" and a "sockpuppet" looks to me like an unpleasant personal attack and you should think carefully about throwing such accusations around wantonly in future. Given I have found evidence of him being mentioned and published in professional reliable sources today, means my opinion has drifted from that. I'm utterly sick of idiots like you who have scared away knowledgable people from Wikipedia, who were complaining about this FIFTEEN YEARS AGO. Wagner Group activities in Libya

Hi. This looks like a mistake, and is possibly what I would call a "reverse copyvio". It popped up at CopyPatrol with 94-96% similarity. Since the article was created today, I assumed that it wasn't a backward copyvio. Since the article is a split from Wagner Group those sites could have copied it from there first, I didn't check that. 1AmNobody24 (talk) 12:30, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

And now I'm concerned that I'm going to make a mess dealing with this even though I've been trying my best to be somewhat slow and delibrate... but I can't help but feel that maybe my good intentions are a misguided mess waiting to happen. Nobody should feel stupid for making a mistake. As you can see in the above thread, I deleted an article by mistake. ("Oh no! Admin abuez!") The important thing is that the mistake was caught quickly and rectified.

The best advice I can give when tagging article for CSD is to look at the history, and look at the logs. In particular, if the log shows another patroller has marked the article as reviewed, that implies that any speedy tag would be controversial and probably shouldn't be done, with the exception of things like G12 which can be missed if the plagiarised sources aren't to hand. Since new users have been prohibited from creating articles, the amount of pages qualifying as A7 or G11 has plummeted to a trickle, so I wouldn't expect too many to appear at NPP anymore. Thanks for the tips. I did actually did take a quick glance at the history... evidently, I didn't look closely enough. I was expecting to see some sort of dramatic byte change if it was some sort of test edit or vandalism. The edit in question added 61 bytes [1]. I should have at least looked at the diff for the immediately preceeding edit, though. I think the other thing that messed me up was seeing a bunch of small semi-automated fixes in the history and not seeing anything that immediately stood out... prompting me to make the terrible assumption that the article was always like that. Again, I should've looked at the actual revision of when the page was created. As for logs, you make a very good point there. I hadn't considered that. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 14:40, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

In the case of Sunil Kumar Kohli, the byte count was very atypical and not what you would expect. Indeed, I looked at the history first and my initial thought was "huh?" wondering how this could have got "missed" at NPP. That's when I checked the specifics, first moving to a version that had been reviewed, then to the version before I got vandalised / non-improved. I wouldn't fret over this too much, it's a one-off that's unlikely to happen again.

As regards Category:All unreferenced BLPs, I occasionally go through this and try and improve stuff, but it's difficult as it inevitably requires me to research a topic on someone I've inevitably never heard of before. Ritchie333 ^(talk) ^(cont) 14:49, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

Unfortunately, copyright violations are a violation of the GNU Free Documentation Licence which Wikipedia runs under; and therefore if they are discovered, they have to be immediately deleted. I was surprised that an article that had survived for over ten years was a straight copyright violation, but on investigation, it turns out the text is a straight lift from https://archives.nypl.org/mus/18598. Not Ritchie, but I did look at your page (Special:Undelete/User talk:Jodysetiawan23) and it's pretty much all statements. Things like "leading", "our" and the like are typical ad language. I can't, because it has already been deleted by another admin. Note to Drm310, this doesn't appear to meet the criteria of WP:U5, which exempts "plausible drafts and pages adhering to Wikipedia:User pages#What may I have in my user pages?" which includes "Drafts, especially where you want discussion or other users' opinions first, for example because of conflict of interest or major proposed changes" (which this is). Why is SchroCat allowed to edit? Without sanctions even? Not too long ago he was facing sanctions and possibly an indef block, then he said he was leaving to avoid the sanctions and then he lied and engaged in abusive sockpuppetry. I know that people have complained about SchroCat, and I know I was the one that acted the courtesy vanishing which effectively booted them off the site. However, I've met SchroCat in real life and we had a great chat about the London Monopoly GA project; he's also done several really helpful GA reviews like Talk:Moorgate station/GA1 and is one of the best copyeditors I've seen at FAC, such as the related FA Moorgate tube crash. I dream of someone uninvolved who could call all who still fight, and those who don't want to, and let them discuss under which conditions fighting could stop. I would like to call Smerus, but now he disappeared completely, which is also the opposite of what I think should happen. I am blamed for it, naturally.
