My extreme Wikibreak has ended[edit]

My fellow editor,

You may have noticed that I have been on a huge wikibreak over the entire summer, or you may not have. I am dreadfully sorry if my unexplained, unannounced, unplanned absence has caused harm to the project involving Outlines of Knowledge, but I am confident that you have recognized my absence and have delegated tasks to this project's additional staff. I have no real excuse for my absence; I haven't suffered some sickness or injury, nor a family emergency. I can't really say that I decided to take a wikibreak...it really just happened. I stopped checking my talk page, stopped editing, moved to other "hobbies". This is really just reflective of my style when editing...I have been through relapsing/recurring cycles when editing before. This was just the first time that I was engaged in an active project.

But enough self explanation. I am sorry for disappearing without notice, and while I can't say that it won't happen again (it most likely will), I can say that I will give due warning if I decide to take another break. With that said, I can start doing work again, although I will be limited to working in the evenings (Mountain Time) as usual. My bot is still functional; it still has its bot flag, and work with AWB should still be no problem. I look forward to your response, and hope that you can forgive my "discrepancy." Thank you for the heads up, and welcome home! I've also been on wikibreak for the past couple of months, with occasional sessions online to keep an eye on things. We have lots of work left ahead of us, though not any bot or AWB work at the moment. All the work right now seems to be manual, but you might be able to figure out a way to speed it up. I've been using WP:LINKY to speed up work on similar tasks on multiple pages, and I can use as much help as I can get because there is a great deal of this type of work. I'll be in touch again soon. It depends on the task. During the weekdays I can only work nights (MT) but on the weekends I'm pretty free. The more automated the task is, the easier I can get it done. So, you should prioritize when you want any tasks done, since I'll be working sequentially on the aforementioned schedule. To make a long story short, pile on as much as you like, but remember when I can work on it and that I will work sequentially. Robert Skyhawk So sue me! Renames[edit]

  1. We need to track down all the lists with "topics" in their titles, and save them to a list. (Not redirects). One good place to start is http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&num=100&q=allintitle%3A+list+topics+-Category+-Template+-Talk+site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2F&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
  2. Then we need to change the names of those that are outlines to "Outline of x" (where x is the topic).
  3. Then we need to add their names to the OOK.
  4. Then we need to convert their contents to OOK format. (Not as bad as it sounds, maybe 10 to 15 minutes each to start - faster once you get the hang of it).

In cases where an "Outline of" article already exists, we need to merge the corresponding topics list into it. However, the renames/conversions are more important because they'll expand the topic selection on the main OOK page. There are a bunch of (extensive) country topics lists, and they will be a bitch to merge (1 to 3 hours each). We should pick away at those, but for now we should conserve most of our energy for things we can change rapidly, like renames and conversions.

P.S.: some of the topics lists are alphabetical indexes. I've been renaming those as I come across them to "Index of x articles". For example, see Index of architecture articles. For the rest, see Portal:Contents/Index. -TT

For the first step, is there some general category that I can get all of the lists from? Or are we going to rely on searches? Querying the API returns a huge amount of results...it doesn't help that non-sysops can only ask for 50 pages at a time. I got to result 600...see User:Robert Skyhawk/Workspace. Ideas? I'm afraid not. I've pulled the first hundred from that search link I included above into User:The Transhumanist/Sandbox75. I used the search replace feature of WP:WikEd to disable the non-article links in the search results. Then I loaded them into Firefox tabs using Linky, so I can jump to the next one in line just by nuking the current tab with Ctrl-W. Pretty fast.

here's the list I pulled that comes after the last result here...there are so few (32) because most of the Google results were in the Project or User namespace. I've also put the raw results you got on that Workspace page that I linked to, so it's a relatively comprehensive list. I'll start moving the pages I got to their proper titles (step 2). Outline Update - expanding the Outline of Knowledge - 2009-10-05[edit]

Time for some catching up...

Special award and thanks to Buaidh

Congratulations and kudos to Buaidh, the first recipient of the Wikipedia World Developer Award, and the first inductee into the Outline of Knowledge WikiProject's Hall of Fame.

The award was announced about 2 months agos on the WikiProject's talk page, and on Wikipedia's Community Bulletin Board.

Buaidh created the historical outlines for all of the U.S. States, the U.S. capital, and most of the U.S. insular areas. He has also worked indefatigably day after day, improving all of the outlines of the U.S. States, and the outlines of all of the countries of the world!

Who's been up to what?
  • Buaidh, working hard on the country outlines.
  • Highfields, MacMed, and I worked on the see also sections of the subject articles corresponding to the outlines (adding or updating the links to the relevant outlines and indexes).

Discussions can sure be frustrating - try getting a proposal through on a guideline's talk page sometime. Most of the time, it seems like the opposition is mindlessly following each other, like...

Outline of Knowledge

Yes, it's a proper noun. It's only proper, since we also have an article called Outline of knowledge which is about knowledge generically.

Moving lists to outlines[edit]

Hi, you recently renamed a lot of established "List" articles to the "Outline of" format without first discussing the moves or getting any consensus for the renames. Although this is fine per WP:BOLD, doing so many at a time would usually require some discussion - and WP:OUTLINE is a failed/disputed-proposed policy. Per WP:BRD I have undone your recent moves, and would ask you not to carry out any more moves to "outline of" without first showing a consensus of some form. I understand. I can only say that I hadn't really thought about how unilateral my actions (and potentially those of other editors) were; I believed that I was moving those pages under at least minor consensus. I should have investigated further and for that I am sorry. If I had considered the fallout these moves were to have, I probably wouldn't have done them; honestly it is against my editing philosophy to make changes before seeking consensus. April 2010 GAN backlog elimination drive[edit]

WikiProject Good Articles will be running a GAN backlog elimination drive for the entire month of April. The goal of this drive is to bring the number of outstanding Good Article nominations down to below 200. Cat:psychology for hidden messages[edit]

Hi! I'm cleaning up cat:psychology. As the message on the page says, articles in this category should be moved to subcategories when appropriate. Having the cat:psychology on the hidden messages template gets way too many "wrong" articles into this category. You wrote in your edit motivation that the cat can be omitted if desired. But how? I tried to remove it from the article Hidden message (it already has the cat:perception, which is a subcat of a subcat of cat:psychology), but I don't know how. Could you tell me? Ten Commandments[edit]

Hello i was editing the Ten Commandments page and you said that i was expressing a person opinion but the page itself says the same thing

Christ simplified the Ten Commandments into two which are the moral foundation of Christianity.[1]

the page itself says later about christianity

In the New Testament, Jesus repeated some of the commandments in Matthew 19:16–19[2] and condensed them into two general commands in another:

‘“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’

Here Jesus is quoting the Hebrew Bible, namely Deuteronomy 6:5[3] and Leviticus 19:18[4] respectively.

To be honest, I'm not very familiar with religion or Christianity (being an atheist myself), so I don't really feel like I can decide whether this is a valid statement. I just wanted to thank you for correcting the Anthony Terlato page title and for taking the time to explain the redirect and semi-protected pages. I really don't know how I made either mistake. I'm afraid, as this was my first article, I don't have the skills to do it right or the knowledge to understand what I've done wrong. I will try to do better in the future. Please understand my situation[edit]

I have been watching these Johnny Test articles for a long time, and I feel like I'm the only person concerned about the quality in these articles. It's the same problems I'm having to deal with over and over and over again with countless different people. Cruft, fake episodes, etc just over and over again. I can indeed understand why you would get frustrated. In the interest of full disclosure, I left the note in part because the other user placed a {{helpme}} template and asked how to deal with the situation. We all have moments of frustration while editing, and it's not against the rules to be frustrated. Hudson Utility Coupe[edit]

Hey Robert, Actually I do need help with one tiny thing. I've noticed that the Hudson Utility Coupe article TITLE is incorrectly written and it's not immediately obvious how to fix it or even if I have the authority to fix it. It's currently in mostly lower case where, I believe, upper case initial letters are called for. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_hudson_utility_coupe. GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up[edit]

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.

The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue.

Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Elections are currently underway for our inaugural Guild coordinators. The voting period will run for 14 days: 00:01 UTC, Friday 1 December – 23:59 UTC, Tuesday 14 December. All GOCE members in good standing, as well as past participants of any of the Guild's Backlog elimination drives, are eligible to vote. There are six candidates vying for four positions. The candidate with the highest number of votes will become the Lead Coordinator, therefore, your vote really matters! Cast your vote today.

November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion[edit]

We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated.

Stats

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive graphs
  • 58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive.
  • Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%.
  • 49 awards will go out to 33 of 48 participants. Check out the complete list of barnstar winners here.

Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering these barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Our next drive is scheduled for January 2011. In the meantime, please consider helping out at the Wikification drive or any of the other places where help with backlogs is needed.

Death of John Lennon[edit]

Hello, I reverted edits made by another editor that went against consensus after debate on the talk page. I should've said why, but this has been going on for a few weeks and I was just frustrated. The edits center around the unsubstantiated "fringe" opinion that Lennon's murder was part of a government conspiracy. While I included a mention of it, just for "completeness," it doesn't warrant it's own subsection which is what I reverted, which had been discussed on the talk page. So, please take a look. reply re. picture's license tag[edit]

Thanks for reply. So, I'll leave everything as is. Having the best "tag" to help prevent a deletion, is all that matters. I inserted those living years of the illustrator or artist on the template, just in case that would help establish the right to use the image. Yes, I have no reason to believe that it does not qualify for public domain, as the calendar company has been out of business for decades. PS. It does seem a little confusing. There are two different pictures on the article: Paul Martin (illustrator). One is from Wikipedia and the other from Wikimedia Commons. The one on Wikipedia probably could be moved to the Commons, but nobody has. The advantage of the Commons is that any project can use its images, whereas images stored here can only be used here. There is a multitude of images stored here that can be moved to the Commons--it's just a matter of doing it. As for why one is on Commons and one is not, that isn't clear...the page on Commons shows no indication that it was ever moved, and has you having made the upload in the first place.
