I have nominated Business Line Directory, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Business Line Directory. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. Shadowjams (talk) 19:14, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Business Line Directory requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for organizations and companies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Conflict of interest[edit]

If you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Business Line Directory, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. JamesBWatson (talk) 10:01, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rodz37 - Thank you for your message on my talk page. The reasons I deleted the article Business Line Directory were twofold:

  1. The article was a promotional vehicle for the subject. As Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, we do not host articles simply for promotional or advertising purposes. It appears as though you may have some professional or personal connection with the company in question (apologies if I am incorrect here). If you do have a conflict of interest, it may be wise to wait for someone to independently write an article on the subject, which introduces my second point.
  2. The article gave no indication that the company in question was notable or significant in any way. As I'm sure you know, Wikipedia does not have an article on every business that exists. This is because all Wikipedia articles should meet our standards for notability. The specific standard for companies is found at this page. In short, if a company has not been written about by some reliable, independent, third-parties (such as newspapers), they are unlikely to meet our criteria for an article. In my searches, I was unable to come up with any reliable sources to add to the article.

There are some alternative outlets which specialise in wiki-pages about companies - you may already know of them - like Wikicompany and About Us. If you would still like to write an article about the Business Line Directory, I would suggest you begin a draft in a subpage like User:Rodz37/Business Line Directory. You can ask for advice from the Wikipedia Help Desk. Then, when you are satisfied that it meets Wikipedia's policies, it can be moved into the main article space.

I hope this information is useful. Please let me know if there is anything I can help you with. --Kateshortforbob talk 10:22, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rodz37 - Sorry about my incorrect assumption re your connection with the Business Line Directory. Regarding the Yellow Pages, I see a couple of differences between that and the BLD. The Yellow Pages article has a number of references (at the bottom of the page). They're not ideal, but at least it means someone has written about YP. For good or ill, YP has international name recognition, and I would suspect that in many places, "Yellow Pages" (or Blue, or White) has become a synonym for a business directory. The Business Line Directory does not, as yet, have that.
I have been through the web search results for a few dozen pages, and haven't come up with anything other than links to the website and comments from satisifed customers such as yourself ([1]). This makes it quite difficult to find any substantial mentions, such as reviews in reliable newspapers etc. which could be used in the article. I checked 111 results for the search ""Business Line Directory" -site:businesslinedirectory.com" with no success. I also checked the News and Blogs search results and did a LexisNexis search for the company in newspapers and publications worldwide with no results. It really is important that there is at least one source for an article, and I haven't, so far, been able to find any.
If you would like the deletion of the Business Line Directory article to be reviewed by independent editors, you can go to WP:DRV to request this. The Help desk can answer any questions you might have about this.--Kateshortforbob talk 11:33, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply, Rodz37. While it is true that a search for "Business Line Directory" - including quotes - gets a large number of initial results, the number of true results is much smaller. For example, if I search "Business Line Directory" on Google, then scroll to the bottom of that page and click the link to the 10th page, I get this: Google.com, Google UK. The page says, "In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 100 already displayed. If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included." So the number of initial results (60,000+) is not accurate.
However, the Google test is not equivalent to Wikipedia's idea of notability. Wikipedia requires that the subjects of articles have been covered by someone else first. Wikipedia is a collator of information, not a creator of it. No-one, as far as I can see, has written about the Business Line Directory. If you know of articles, reviews or other material which has been written about the BLD, that would be very useful to add to a draft article. --Kateshortforbob talk 13:17, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent edits[edit]

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 10:29, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

More advice[edit]

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a notice-board for you to advertise your company: the "trigger happy mod" who deleted your article has already explained why, above. Two more sources of useful advice:
