Your GA nomination of John Johnson (footballer)

The article John Johnson (footballer) you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:John Johnson (footballer) for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of the article. Few things to remember when you're creating a new footballer bio

Hope this helps. The first one is absolutely basic to categorisation of articles across WP, and the dashes thing is standard MoS. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:36, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

  1. DEFAULTSORT: it goes above the categories, and determines where alphabetically the page gets listed on category pages. For example, without the DEFAULTSORT, the player Éder Díez appears on Category:Sestao River footballers sorted according to his accented first name at the end of the alphabet, under É. With {{DEFAULTSORT:Diez, Eder}}, the page would appear sorted correctly according to his surname under D. See Help:Category#Default sort key;
  2. Dashes: scorelines and year ranges use an endash not a hyphen. See MOS:ENDASH, WP:DATERANGE;
  3. WP:Persondata: biographical articles are supposed to have it;
  4. Project banners on the talk page: footballer bio talk pages should have {{WikiProject Biography}} and {{WikiProject Football}} with the basic parameters filled in;
  5. List it at WP:WPF/NEW under the date it was created;
  6. The as-of date parameters in the infobox are called |club-update= and |nationalteam-update=, not |pcupdate= and |ntupdate=, and have been for some time; see Template:Infobox football biography/doc. Although the old names still work, we should be moving over to the new ones.

Hello. You're still using the wrong dashes and still not using DEFAULTSORT or WP:Persondata in your recent articles. If there's something you don't understand about how to do the stuff mentioned above, please ask. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:57, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Re: Mahatma_Gandhi

Namaste, Royroydeb. You have got at least one new message at the Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics. Please continue the discussion there!
Message added by TitoDutta 15:43, 24 March 2014 (UTC). You can remove this notice at any time.
  • Do you have digital copy of the book? I have not read the book, but while reading the summary, I felt I was reading a report of what Gandhi himself wrote in his autobiography this page and some other pages. There is a new reply at the same thread. TitoDutta 16:00, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
@Titodutta: I dont have the digital copy. You can get it here and here. But still your mentioned source says nothing about his other behaviours mentioned in my source. RRD13 (talk) 16:21, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
  • Read his full autobiography and then take it to Talk:Gandhi. I'll be interested to learn from where Adams collected information. --TitoDutta 16:27, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

regarding subrata pal

i noticed you change on subrata paul page,will you tell me why did you reverted? Preetam040 (talk) 13:18, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

@Preetam040: Hi, thanks for your edit. The source which you provided i.e. Sportskeeda is a self-publishing source. In such sources amateur writers give their articles which are then published. This is not a reliable source as per WP:RS. Some examples of these websites are ftpro, bleacherreport. You should always put a reference from a source which is not "self-publishing" like BBC, Goal etc. In such websites professionals write the articles. Cheers! RRD13 (talk) 13:27, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

Apologies (if needed)

Hi there RR, AL "here",

i hope you did not take offense at my comment at Osmar Barba (you were certainly notified, as i wikilinked your name), i am not angry or anything (nor do i have the right to be), i'm just sincerely taken aback as to why you continue to use the small dashes - your edit in this article was AFTER our last conversation, not BEFORE - even though the bigger, correct ones are available to be copy/pasted. If you have difficulty performing anything, i'll gladly help the best i can (am leaving WP for good on 12 JULY 2014, but until then i'm "all ears").

Now, i promise 100% i will leave you alone with this dash situation, both you and me have more important things to attend to, i imagine. Cheers, accept my apologies if needed and happy editing --AL (talk) 01:58, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

  • Pay no attention (or little) to the message above, our latest conversation regarding this started on 13 MARCH, you added the chart in Osmar's article on 27 FEBRUARY so i was wrong there. Still i repeat, if you have any problems, just whistle. --AL (talk) 02:02, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Iván López Álvarez

Hello, and thank you for asking. Of the things mentioned above:

  • the Defaultsort is present and possibly correct, though the person who added a sort key to the article's talk page put the surname first: I have no knowledge of the player, so wouldn't know whether he's normally referred to by surname or not, though surname is more usual;
  • dashes in the infobox and in the season and scoreline mentioned in the prose are still wrong;
  • Persondata's present and correct, though if you're going to put the player's nickname in as an alternative name, it'd be an idea to mention it in the prose;
  • you didn't do the talk page banners;
  • correctly listed at WPF/NEW;
  • as-of-date infobox parameters have the old names.

Perhaps you might want to go back and fix. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 08:17, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

In addition to what Struway said: 1 - player is (and will be for quite some time) a B-TEAM player, so he has no business being inserted in the first-team squad template, only when (if) he is promoted to the main squad, not after one game and ten minutes! 2 - so, related to that, he plays for Getafe CF B not Getafe CF; 3 - can you be sure (based on what you wrote) he will score six games for Getafe B this season (the six he has until 30 March 2014 and NOTHING ELSE)? I can't.

I'll majorly cleanup article tomorrow, happy week --AL (talk) 02:08, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

  • Done, hopefully i was of help. Again, i apologize if my choice of words (here, or in edit summary) was not adequate. --AL (talk) 14:04, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. April 2014

Information icon Please do not use styles that are unusual, inappropriate or difficult to understand in articles, as you did in Gorka Unda. There is a Manual of Style, and edits should not deliberately go against it without special reason.

Sorry, but people are bored with cleaning up after you. You've been on Wikipedia a long time now, and have been told several times that the Manual of Style requires us to use endashes in numeric or date ranges (such as football seasons and career durations) and in scorelines. You clearly know how to generate them, because you used them in the career stats you recently added to Mário Sérgio, so please use them in the infobox as well. Thank you for listening. GAN Recruitment

Hello, I have decided to go and assist in GAN`s. The problem is, I do not know how to do this! I am asking the question, could you be my trainer and train me to participate in this opportunity to improve Wikipedia? (have I even asked the question in the right way, too?) Happy Attack Dog (you rang?) 14:03, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Yep, I do agree.... :) Happy Attack Dog (you rang?) 14:08, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Hello. Noticed a dead link in the above. I've tagged it, but I'm wondering if you might have made a mistake copying the url across, if it was live in the last couple of hours when you created the article. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 08:27, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

I copied the link from List of Cypriot football transfers summer 2013. RRD13 (talk) 08:45, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
You really, really, shouldn't just copy references from elsewhere when you haven't seen the source yourself: see WP:Citing sources#Say where you read it. This is important – on a whole different level of importance from whether you use the right dashes or not. When an editor adds sourced information to an article, that editor must take personal responsibility to be sure that the sources verify the information, particularly with biographies of living persons. I do hope you haven't been doing it often.... Struway2 (talk) 09:42, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

List of foreign footballers

As to that, it's not the sort of thing I've ever worked on, but in general you'd need to ensure your inclusion criteria were clear and made sense; use endashes for your year ranges; and add a source for each player to verify all the information included. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 10:18, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's United States ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Washington, D.C. Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Canada Reid,iain james (submissions), tiger from Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Minas Gerais Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Nepal Czar (submissions) and Indiana Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
