Advice please (now sorted)

Hi. Sorry to bother you but what is the recommended, polite way to say to someone "you possibly shouldn't be editing [only] about yourself in here". See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Brockuk - clearly none of this is in bad faith but at the same time I have a nasty feeling that, while it will seem obviously right to the editor (the text is wrong or lacking and who knows better than he does how to correct it?) it probably breaks some policy or other. Certainly I can see less problem with him correcting facts about himself in the article about him, than with him adding himself as a notable person who lives in such and such a place, but I really don't know how to frame this and do not want to cause offence when I am sure he thinks he's doing the right thing. No worries and thanks very much for the note. I know everyone's busy! As a matter of interest, do you happen to know if there is a template which both welcomes someone and explains about COI, nicely, in one go? I'm just thinking that this is perhaps not uncommon - go to wp, see article about my brass band, improve article about my brass band, etc - and at the moment it (I think) takes two templates and perhaps risks overwhelming the user. Woolworhts Photos

Hi,

Images of the inside of any Woolworths Store needs to be approved by the Woolworths media office at HQ.

I just want to make you aware just in case you did not seek approval to take the photos. There are employee's at HQ that actively look for violations of the brand(s) online.

If you sought approval from a person in store, ensure that you have their full name, position and the time & date of the approval. This will then have you covered.

Thanks SMC for reverting the vandalism to my talk page. I was Huggling and accidentally reverted that anon’s edit to a talk page. I thought it had been made to the article page, reverted it, realized my mistake in about 10 seconds, and went about fixing it. First I reverted my reversion, so the anon’s comments were put back into the talk page. Then, I went to the anon’s talk page and quickly reverted the warning template that HG had placed on it. But, in the two minutes it took me to do all that, s/he was venting on my talk page. Thanks again! I reverted your edit because I thought you were trying to do a test - you were putting a reference tag in a title. In the future be careful with where you put reference tags - put them at the end of paragraphs/sentences in the main article, not the headers. Yeah I do; really it's way too big for practical use in lectures (17" screen) but I manage to use it at uni anyway (be it for actually taking notes, or as a useful distraction during boring lectures). Depends on the day; last semester I had 8AM starts (no fun!) but the earliest I have this semester is 9AM, and most are 10AM. It's pretty cruisy as far as timetables go this semester, though last semester was a lot more fun since I had a really awesome design course, which was a total breeze if you knew any design/coding. I'm on the Australian uni equivalent of spring break :P it's a week long mid-semester holiday, kind of intended for study but I don't really have any to do (at least I think so). Ends in a few days then it's back to the daily study grind, as such. To be fair though I do stay up kinda late even on uni nights (say 11PM) but usually common sense kicks in ("hey, I've got to get up at 6:30 tomorrow!") and I get to bed at a semi-decent hour. Currently I'm just on RC patrol, checking out new edits for vandalism. There's always a fair amount of that! But yeah, that's the thing I don't like about week long breaks - they're not long enough to really plan stuff to do, so I tend to wind up having massive lazy weeks like this one. :P SMC (talk) 15:07, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

There's (thankfully!) a lot more people than just me doing RC patrol on here. As for how it's done: RC patrollers usually have a script or software suite, such as Twinkle or Huggle which filters vandal edits using particular keyphrases (such as swear words, common random gibberish, etc.) and gives us a choice between keeping the edit or reverting it and warning the user. Each edit has to be fairly carefully considered (by a human) before a reversion is done, but it all has to be done in a fairly efficient manner, so yeah as you can imagine, mistakes do happen. Unfortunately no, I don't. I did do some French in highschool though. Spanish tends to not be a popular language to learn over here (I think it is in the US?); rather our schools usually teach French, German, Chinese and Japanese. The last two probably have to do with the whole "Asia/Pacific" region thing. Still got nothing on the reason why we teach the first two... SMC (talk) 15:49, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Pretty much was just taught it growing up. Grew up around it, as such.. kind of hard to explain with your native language, but you just "know it". I've heard it's hard to learn though as a language other than your native one. SMC (talk) 15:56, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

When you're on my user page or user talk page, there's a section called "Toolbox" in the bar to your left - if you're reading this now you'll probably have to scroll up until you see it. Turk-Albanians

The term "Turk-albanian" is not only an offensive and derogatory term for the Muslim Albanians, but is also historically incorrect. I don't think you will find any sources in written Literature regarding the Muslims of XIXth century Crete being designated as "Turko-Greeks". I can see plenty of Google search hits which reference "Turko-X" ie. Administrator behavior

Can you please check this admin User:Dbachmann, he made a lot of changes in Albanians and Albania related articles, and those changes did not contribute anything (if anything it deleted encyclopedic information). Also this instance could show lack of WP:AGF towards Albanian editors. He is also very active in Kosovo discussion - very protective of "Kosovo is not a country". I am not claiming anything yet, just want to know if there is any base for suspicion. —Anna Comnena (talk) 11:08, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

From a cursory glance at that diff as well as the Kosovo talk page, I have to say that those edits are hardly civil; specifically, Dbachmann's reply which concludes with "don't waste anymore talk space..." [2] concerns me, particularly coming from a sysop. The purpose of talk pages is to facilitate consensus, discussion and constructive debate, and all three of those are especially important with this article in its current situation (ArbCom probation). As for Dbachmann's edits on Albanian articles, I can't see any obvious POV pushing there. Granted, in one case a large chunk of article was removed with little explanation, but it was unreferenced -- which usually gives editors the option of removing that content at any time. Yet those incivility concerns remain, and I'm sure you've looked at your options for addressing those. So in summary: I'd conclude there's underlying incivility, but I believe *most* of the edits that I can see on Albanian articles are justified -- if you have specific diffs you're concerned about in those articles, I'd be happy to take a look.   • May bad, I actually got it mixed up. Well, it all started when you warned this guy on 1st October 2009 but he went to WP:RPP about 12 hours ago wanting to protect his talk page from being edited by people like us (read as in being templated/warned!), I picked it up immediately and went through his trail. I had this guy’s (anonymous) talk page watchlisted because I had gone recently to warning template him, only someone else beat me to it. I have a couple of problems with protecting an anon’s talk page: (1) When his page became protected, the protecting admin forgot to put back the {{whois}} template. (2) If the page protection were to last longer than his block — which in this instance it will not — then he could return and vandalize with impunity since none of us recent changes patrollers would be able to hit him with warning templates. Agreed. I don't personally believe it should have been protected in the first place anyway; granted Dave1185 was restoring his warning templates (even anons are allowed to remove them) but this anon has removed the block template as well. You're right about the protection vs. block; there's a whole 14hrs before anyone can do anything about that IP address. I'm going to look at requesting page unprotection. Everything you write on Wikipedia *should* be backed up by third-party sources; see WP:REFERENCE for an overview of this. Basically it means you need to find something to support anything and everything you write, particularly if what you're writing is controversial in the least. Mondo 2000 revert

Your revert of the Mondo 2000 article

from:

"It was a more anarchic and subversive prototype of its later imitator, Wired magazine." (new)

to:

"It was seen[who?] as a more anarchic or subversive reflection of its later contemporary, Wired magazine." (old)

seems to me to be in error.

The old version is weasel-worded and indeed has a "who" tag. The old version also contains the oxymoron "later contemporary" and describes Mondo 2000 as a "reflection" of Wired although Mondo 2000 was founded years before Wired. That Mondo 2000 was more "anarchic and subversive" than Wired is not contentious; those who worked with or read both magazines have agreed with the import of the description.

Below is an excerpt from an article written in 1995 by Jack Boulware for SF Weekly and published in Suck on the basis of interviews with many principals of Mondo and Wired which thoroughly supports the new language in the Mondo 2000 article. The full article contains more support.

Mondo 1995: Up and Down With the Next Millennium's First Magazine excerpt:

As Mondo was cresting, the founders of a failed magazine named Electric Word, Louis Rosetto and Jane Metcalfe, were returning to the States from Amsterdam. They were eager to start a magazine about computer culture and had already picked out a name: Wired. A mutual friend introduced them to Mondo adviser Randy Stickrod, and after a small meeting at Stickrod's home, he showed the group a portion of his office space at South Park, a corner eventually nicknamed "The Charmed Corner" for its list of successful publishing tenants - Wired, Might, Cups, Boing Boing, and Just Go!.

Rosetto and Metcalfe liked the space, moved in, and spent the next 15 months hosting a conference on the WELL, schmoozing contributors, and working on a business plan package for investors. Stickrod even introduced them to Queen Mu at the Mondo House.

"They were kind of chummy," Stickrod remembers. "They were swapping tips. That was the level of incestuousness we had going on there. Alison would come over to my office and bring a box of Mondos for me to hand out. She'd go sit and talk to Louis and Jane for half an hour. There was no overt tension at all."

Throughout 1992, Mondo 2000 could do no wrong and could afford to be gracious to the young upstarts, who obviously were dull, boring computer people while Mondo was ultrahip counterculture. (Electric Word telegraphed how boring it was with the slogan "The world's least boring computer magazine.")

Still, Wired's basic concept - the consequences of technology on lifestyle and popular culture - was very similar to Mondo. Didn't everyone know?

"Oh, of course I did," says Stickrod. "They knew that, too. What we all tried to do was politely underplay the similarities and really play up the differences. At the time, we all put a spin on it that they were not competitors. Including Alison."

"The only thing that was remotely connected [to Wired] was Mondo 2000," says Wired Executive Editor Kevin Kelly, who wrote for the early Mondo. "It was coming along in parallel with it. We were very careful not to refer to Mondo. We didn't want to be compared to them. But they also were aware of this same niche."

In January 1993, Wired magazine debuted as a bimonthly, its billboard campaign announcing, "At last. A magazine for the Digital Age," its promotional literature adopting the phrase "Rolling Stone of the 90s," a soundbite used previously by Mondo 2000.

The Mondo folks had no reason to flinch: A week later they were featured on the cover of Time magazine's "Cyberpunk" story in what could have passed for a paid advertisement. The cover was designed by Bart Nagel, and the layout, which mimicked the Mondo book's design, was illustrated by Mondo artists and photographers. Paragraph after paragraph was devoted to descriptions of Mondo articles and topics. Wired rated only a passing mention.

Hi, could you just see the infobox on Albanians article (with references and all) and make it semi-protected for now, there will be edit-waring on the infobox, some Greek editors do not like the numbers. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately!) I'm not a sysop, so I can't do protections or anything like that. You can request those over at WP:RPP but you should have something to back it up with; content disputes do not usually result in a sprotect, but vandalism edits almost always do. Semi-related note, over vandalism at least. I correct a pair of vandalism edits by User talk:195.195.247.144 here[4] and here[5] and checked the user talk page to leave a tag... instead finding a final warning notice from you and a large number of other tags placed in the past. Since I don't have additional rights I don't have your immensely superior magical fancy-pants programs with auto-notifications... I figured it best I left you the notice personally to make sure it actually got here... yet I have a feeling it will have been sorted out by the time you read this... It would appear that Huggle has added the final warning notice as the user received a third warning just the day before. public holidays in Germany (I've reverted your unintended vandalism)

december 26 is not Nikolaustag, St. Nikolaus is on December 6th and it's not a public holiday!!! december 26 is St.Stephans-Tag, but it's not often called that in Germany. It's usually refered to as Zweiter Weihnachtsfeiertag = Second day of Christmas!

Weren't Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels the people who *defined* primitive communism? And FYI, you were warned for introducing factual errors, not vandalism. You haven't made it clear that it was their *interpretation*, not their *definition*, which is what that reference supports (I imagine).
