Antarctica cooling controversy figures[edit]

I think that based on the feedback received on the talk page, there is consensus, and we have waited enough, so feel free to edit and insert the two Antarctica temp figures showing the two trends, if there are not copyright issues of course. Thanks for your contributions on this polemical article. Mariordo 14:28, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Michoud Fault[edit]

Sagredo;

I didn't know much about this fault but it seems to be a classic example of a "growth fault". I've added some content and references to the michoud fault article but think some explanatory figures are needed. This is the weak part of my wikipedia efforts, I can add my own figures easily but other licensing baffles me. Can you get a couple of figures added:
Fig. 7 from http://epw.senate.gov/109th/Gagliano_testimony.pdf
and
Figure 1 from Geology; April 2006; v. 34; no. 4; p. 281-284; DOI: 10.1130/G22264.1
Modern-day tectonic subsidence in coastal Louisiana - Roy K. Dokka
Gagliano's figure 7 explains nicely the significance of the large area map in Dokka's Fig. 1
Let me know if these are feasible for you

WOSM map[edit]

Thanks for uploading the WOSM Eurasia map and making it PD. I moved to commons so all mediawiki projects can use it, do not put "Image" in the actual name of the file. It's name on Commons is Image:WOSM-Eurasian Region.svg.RlevseTalk 17:52, 25 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I had just asked him to rename it, I did not mean to get you in trouble. You do really nice work, by the way! Merry Christmas! Chris (クリス) (talk) 21:38, 25 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Brother, I think I finally understand your concerns earlier, please let me know if I am off. I think you read it that I wanted you to stretch or move the existing image to make the shapes different. That is not at all what I meant, and I am sorry for being unclear. All I meant was, this particular map needed to be changed from one of the whole world, which was bulky and unnecessary, to one of the Pacific, which would pick up all needed countries but not have all the extraneous stuff.
I didn't get all of the png to svg stuff you meant, but I think you're doing a great job and I always appreciate your work on my behalf. Chris (クリス) (talk) 06:49, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're going to hate me...[edit]

I have been getting some feedback that the depth or intensity of the red does not match the others, and so I put them side-by-side to see, and they may be right, because of the numerous island chains and so on

Internationaliszation of the Graphic lab's recommandation[edit]

Hello, I hadn't forget German, but I think the French GLab is the current leader, and so, we have to look for English<->French and French<->German talks ... for the moment, because the main current issue is to keep every one is the same line, to avoid waste of time on each side.

I'm on my side planing to request a BIG change to "Gods" (mediawiki's programmers) which, if understand and accepted, will allow Commons to become an Online SVG editor O_O , always in the aim to avoid huge lost of time, especially in translations, editions, maintenance and updates of SVG images.

Futur will say... Yug 19:34, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Tv the muppet show bein green.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Q[edit]

Hey, do you have a source for the fact that state of fear conveyed a false sense of factuality by using foot notes? I recall reading it somewhere but not sure where. I think it would be good to place it right next to the statement in the article. A new user made some changes under "blatant POV." I reverted her since she was not right, but I think a source would add much more authority to the statement and save us vain discussion. Thanks much, Brusegadi (talk) 04:00, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dont worry. I know how to handle the wackos. I am just pressed for time and I thought that you would be able to find the refs faster than me. I used to watch that article but it got slow for a while, but now it is getting some attention so back in my watchlist it is. Thanks for everything good sir! Brusegadi (talk) 08:24, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tell me about it. The best part is the condescending tone! Its sad that many of our good editors are planning to leave (SA) and soon the madman will be running the asylum... Brusegadi (talk) 03:25, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SA?

Yeah. Although getting to hand out a pounding to C. Violet did feed good, didn't it! I'm pretty happy about that article. When I first saw it, it contained only one paragraph with all the references. If we can keep the Truth in there, that'll be great, it's the wacko's bible.

A friend with a Ph.D. in Chemistry comments about ratios of the students in the U. S. colleges studing serious sciences and maths. Many or most are from outside the country. Because our school systems have become so poor, and the motivation to study difficult subjects just isn't there. Having 60% of the country's population believe that the world is less than 10,000 years old doesn't make for a good base on which to teach science. The creationists have sabotaged the teaching of science, people don't learn it here, and it's no wonder they believe Crichton. It's a good thing that so many college students come from outside the country to study science and math, and good that many want to stay. Sagredo⊙☿♀♁♂♃♄ 04:31, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have noticed that too. At least the religious influence is somehow more tangible and can be tackled slowly (pastaferians!) The public education system in the US has some other problems that are even hard to identify. Public high schools dont really teach, they are designed to indoctrinate and keep the kids in check while the parents are away. Babysitting services. People talk about the US paying twice as much as Switzerland for the same level of healthcare, I wonder what the numbers are for inferior levels of education... Brusegadi (talk) 00:30, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea what the monetary figures are. The religious thing is bad, because when you undermine one part of the educational system you undermine it all. I think the U. S. (for profit) healthcare system is a particularly bad way to do it. The U. S. carries the rest of the world in the pharmaceutical industry by providing most of the profit for to do research. Which is fine for poor countries, but not for Europe, and most of the industrialized world. It does make one wonder about the future. Although, when you add in the problems that will come from aging populations and declining populations in many industrialized countries, the U. S. doesn't look so bad. I still fear global warming most of all. I live in western Montana. The heat was brutal last summer, then conditions were ripe for fires. Idaho had more fires that Montana, but we're downwind and got all the smoke. The real nasty thing is it's not more fires. The trend since 1960 is actually to lower numbers, but bigger fires. More violent, harder to stop, starting earlier in the spring, and ending later in the fall. The trend is on the order of a factor of 4 increase in acres burned in 20 years. I wonder if we won't see an ice free summer on the Arctic Sea in 5-6 years scare the world into action. But the one thing about which the denialists are right - it will be expensive. At least for the U. S. Sagredo⊙☿♀♁♂♃♄ 00:59, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
SA=User:ScienceApologist. I recall reading somewhere that the pharmaceutical companies also use price discrimination. Europe pays less than the US for pretty much the same deals. I'll see you at the climate pages, Brusegadi (talk) 02:51, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rememebr?[edit]

I wonder if they got it from us (when we had the wrong version) or NASA... Brusegadi (talk) 18:37, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Had to check the dates. The blog was written in March, well before we got rid of the image. It contains text that was on the same page at NASA as the image so that's probably where they got it. As soon as we got it out of the articles, I made a new version with text across it "do not use this image" bold, all caps color outline, etc. and it has since been deleted. A new version of it with a corrected scale is still on NASA's website, but it's kind of obsure (NASA ain't proud of that one)

I don't think it will come back to haunt us, and we could simply replace it with the new (red) one, as it is an update. The old one will probably circulate on the internet until the rising oceans short out the last computer.

I haven't followed GW as closely, the graphics lab has been more fun (mostly) You could always request an image to illustrate any point you want to make, and, of course, I'd come look to see what it was all about.  ; ) (Actually not such a bad idea, as some leeway in the realm of (no original research) is allowed in making images.) A question on an old, good image[edit]

For the Coastguard ensign you created, looking at it closely, I found something strange: At the top, there's this slanted gray line, and the 2nd to the last red bar has a strange slanting top to it. Is this just MW's SVG renderer? 68.39.174.238 (talk) 16:31, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm ashamed to admit that this is a bit of sloppiness on my part. I have since corrected it. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, and should you find anything else of similar nature in any of my images please let me know. Sagredo⊙☿♀♁♂♃♄ 18:31, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SVG images[edit]

Hi there. I was wondering if you could give me a hand. I've created an SVG version of the Zimbabwe bird and knicked the shield of Rhodesia from one of the flags. I'm trying to create a clearer SVG version of the COA of Rhodesia based on your version but I don't know how to colour the shapes in on Inkscape. Still new to it all.... Thanks. Mangwanani (talk) 19:55, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mangwanani. I'm always happy if I can help. The svg I made of the COA of Rhodesia is a Inkscape trace of Image:Rhodesiancoatofarms.png, which is from Vector Images.com. The VI images all have several problems, small size, inaccuracies, and some WP idiot has decreed that we do not have the right to use them. (I think that's incorrect if one reads VI's image pages, but WP's policy is now to delete them all.
Back to the Rhodesian COA - the only decent things I've gotten from Inkscape's tracer was tracing one color at a time, and then it was often debatable if the resulting svg was an improvement over the original image. The Rhodesian COA was done all colors at once, and that seems to give incorrect shades. The nature of the tracings is such that all of a color in the original image becomes one "path", and one cannot change the color of part of a "path".
If an Inkscape "path" is more than one separate object, is possible to break the path apart with the toolbar-- Path>>Break Apart.
But that svg is such a poor image my suggestion is to draw a new svg from this image from here. It's as close as you are likely to get to an "official" image, and you can just see the lines well enough to draw it accurately. If you want, I'll put it in my queue.
Regarding the Vector Images.com images. It's possible that the "errors" in the images, for example the wings of the eagle in the Indonesian COA are different in a way that would allow them to be copyrighted. They couldn't copyright the whole eagle, but just the wings. Redrawing those wings as an svg would not remove that copyright. I think that the most that would happen is that we would be asked to take them down, and that's probably unlikely. Probably more likely is that someone from that country would see the errors and want them changed. As happened with this COA.
As a general rule, i think we should always search for government images of seals and COA's. I've had some luck putting the word "embassy" in the google search; this often turns up an image from one of the desired country's embassies.
Hope this helps. Sagredo⊙☿♀♁♂♃♄ 21:47, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Sagredo. This helps. I have a vector version of the Zimbabwe Bird and the shield, as I said, so that saves at least 2 jobs concerning that. I have tried all sorts of traces that look fine but the colours are basically non existant. This is where I was stuck but I shall keep having a play and hopefully we should be able to get something together. I was looking at one of my old Rhodesian dollars and that seems to have a fairly clear COA on it and that may come in useful... However, thanks for your help ^^. Thanks for uploading Image:Rate_of_change_in_Ice_Sheet_Height.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Coat of Arms of Indonesia Grave Mistakes[edit]

Sagredo; I really admired your interest on my country's Coat of Arms, Garuda Pancasila. However you have made several GRAVE mistakes. I really appreciate if you do your research a little bit more before you messing around with other nation's official identity.

1. National motto is Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, not Bhinneka Tunggal INKA

2. The number of garuda's feathers is carefully crafted to symbolize our nations independence day: Wing each 17, Tail: 8, Upper tail: 19, Neck: 45, 17 August 1945. Not just random number of feathers.

3. The cotton on the shield is white and green, not gold.

4. The horizontal bar across the shiled is symbolize equator, the line is not present in your work

5. Although your image is clean and neat, its plainly ugly (pardon my frankness).

Soo I've upload the correct version of Garuda Pancasila based on official Indonesian Government Image of Garuda

Please revert back all the link of your pict that you have made to all Indonesian related articles that bears garuda to the latest correct version.

Thanks,

In response to your highly critical remarks Gunkarta, this item was on the Graphic Lab page and at the time a HELL of a lot of work went into researching this coat of arms. As with anything, no one person is perfect and a few errors are made from time to time. These just needed to be pointed out politely rather than the frankly insulting manner you have done so above. Sagredo and other editors put a lot of hard work into this image and you try making Vector Graphics - I know because I've tried. It is exceedingly difficult. In future it would be better if you phrased your requests in a polite manner and not hurl insults to people who have spent a lot of time trying to improve Wikipedia. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Arctic Sea Ice area thickness and volume trends.png[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:Arctic Sea Ice area thickness and volume trends.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by an adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.187.0.164 (talk) 16:16, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Jonathan T. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. Inaccuracies in the Topographic map of India[edit]

Article reference : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India File reference : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:India_Geographic_Map.jpg The river in the south of India is Cauvery or Kaveri (not Kasveri) ; The river south of the river Godavari is Krishna and not Tapati  ; The river Beas is missing in the Indus river basin in the North West (not directly relevant) and other minor doubts that I have to verify!

Unfortunately, the computer (a laptop) that I used for graphics died. It was 4 years old and a number of its parts were giving problems, which means it isn't worth fixing, and wasn't a huge loss. I had planned to replace it in about 6 months to a year. Right now all I have is its predecessor, which is too slow to do graphics, but it's good enough for email and s l o w internet browsing. When I get the computer replaced, I will fix the map. Apologies that I am unable to help you until then. Sagredo⊙☿♀♁♂♃♄ 01:50, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dont Give Up The Ship Flag[edit]

Hi, thanks for the image of the Dont Give Up The Ship flag. I just wanted to let you know about recent restoration work on the original flag when it was removed from Memoral Hall at the US Naval Academy. In 1913, the flag was restored by having a canvas backing and a blue cover stitched on. In the recent restoration it was discovered that the flag inside was made of a single layer of fine brown wool felt with light tan linen letters stitched on each side. Since fading has occured due to poor display, the flag may have been a dark brown. The earliest description said the flag was black. The flag's top and bottom were folded over and so the original flag was much more square than what was visible on display. The original dimensions were 8 x 10 feet. The flag in the SVG image is far too rectangular therefore. Here is the article document on the restoration. The article has an image before the fabric restoration, so it still has the blue cover and stitching. However, this does show the dimensions and placement of the letters. - Parsa (talk) 04:42, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was not sure yesterday whether to include you on the list of involved editors, but I have been asking everyone at that page to agree to leave off edit warring on the climate change material so the article can be unlocked. Below is copied the same post I left for the others. Hopefully discussion will not stall out into edit warring again.

I have locked Jim Inhofe (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) for one week, as discussion seems to have devolved into edit warring. I would like to unprotect the article as soon as possible if discussion can be restarted. I am asking each of the participants to please affirm that until one week from today they will refrain from editing any material at that article that is related to climate change. The idea is to mimic the effects of the lock without the software enforcement. Unless there is a firm consensus at Talk:Jim Inhofe, please do not make any potentially controversial changes. I expect to block any editor who continues to edit disruptively despite assurances to the contrary. I am posting this message to all relevant talkpages; please do not take this as laying blame on any particular editor. - 2/0 (cont.) 06:03, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alas, sorry, but for all practical purposes the answer to both questions is no. Nor am I able to do any additional corrections, as I have presently do not have a computer with either enough speed or memory to do any graphics, just an old laptop which gets bound up every time my anti virus software updates its definition file, i. e. daily.  :( If I a better one, I would be helping out at the graphics lab. Two questions, the first of which is important, the second of which is a minor technical point:

  1. What is the basis for your claim that the image is a work of the federal Government. I see it came from the NSIDC site, which doesn't appear to me to be part of the Federal Government. It is obviously possible that the image was created as part of a Federal grant and is treated as a Federal work, but my quick glance at the site didn't uncover such information. Can you provide it?
  2. Why is the image in Commons not the same as the image at the page you identified as the source?--SPhilbrickT 18:37, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Revisions to the Coat of Arms of Nepal file on wikimedia[edit]

Hi Sagredo,

First and foremost, thanks a lot for your kind effort in creating the svg image of the Coat of Arms of Nepal. As you may have noticed, there are some technical issues of accuracy in the current version of the file. Therefore I thought of contributing something and more than a year ago I uploaded a .gif image of an "actual" coat of arms which was converted to .png by another user png image.I am new to editing Wikipedia and didn't know much about the use of vector graphics on wikipedia. Later I learned some basic skills for using Inkscape and revised the file that you created and uploaded it here. The primary part I changed was the text on the red ribbon at the bottom. I also added an extra bangle to the female hand. Everything else was kept the same. Since I am quite new to editing on wikipedia, my work was not approved by maintainers of various pages that use the image of coat of arms. The .svg image itself was deleted, saying that it was "just a copy of the original version". However, the image has now been restored and I was trying to figure out ways to promote the use of a more accurate image. Therefore, I thought of seeking your help. I would be glad if you could, with your better knowledge of the software, do your own revision and post an updated version of the file. Thanks a lot. PraShree (talk) 05:16, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
