July drive home page

Hi! The July drive home page is starting to load really slowly for some of us on slower internet connections. So I am suggesting that people with lengthy article lists can move them to a difference location, such as their sand box or their talk page. Just leave a link to the new location where your article list used to appear. See my section for an example of how this could be done. Thanks. And thanks for having such a long list of completed articles! Your contributions are appreciated. --Diannaa (Talk) 23:29, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Stats
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.

PACIFIC MERIDIAN PAGE

What the fuck? I spent 3 days translating this article from Russian Wikipedia! And you guys just deleted it without sending any notice to my e-mail! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Meridian_(film_festival)

I rewrote all text except official documents! I have all rights to use all information from that site!

I insist on restoring the page! Right NOW! Roman Naumenko (talk · contribs) 01:41, August 5, 2010

I am composing a message to Roman Naumenko (who sent me the same note) giving my reasons for the ProD and explaining a little bit about how proposed deletion works. It would help if I had a copy of the article, for reference. Can you put it into my user space? I assume Roman kept a copy. Thanks. Peter Chastain (talk) 11:24, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Romanization for words of English origin

On the MOS:JP talk page, a discussion has been started about including or not including romanizations for words of English origin, such as Fainaru Fantajī in Final Fantasy (ファイナルファンタジー, Fainaru Fantajī) (for the sake of simplicity, I called this case "words of English origin", more information on semantics here).

Over the course of a month, it has become apparent that both the parties proposing to include or not include those romanizations cannot be convinced by the arguments or guidelines brought up by the other side. Therefore, a compromise is trying to be found that will satisfy both parties. One suggestion on a compromise has been given already, but it has not found unanimous agreement, so additional compromises are encouraged to be suggested.

One universally accepted point was to bring more users from the affected projects in to help achieve consensus, and you were one of those selected in the process.

What this invitation is:

  • You should give feedback on the first suggested compromise and are highly encouraged to provide other solutions.

What this invitation is not:

  • This is not a vote on including or excluding such romanizations.
  • This is not a vote on compromises either.

It would be highly appreciated if you came over to the MOS:JP talk page and helped find a solution. Thank you in advance. Prime Blue (talk) 11:30, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

T2 SDE

Please restore this article. The article was deleted for lack of reliable sources to establish notability. The main website for the subject matter is T2 System Development Environment. The subject appears notable to me - if all mentions in Wikipedia of T2 SDE were wikilinked, this article would be referenced from 13 articles. Obankston (talk) 07:29, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

According to the deletion discussion, the article was deleted because of a lack of independent third-party sourcing. Do you know of any books, magazine or journal articles, or other such sources that would address those concerns? We can't reference ourselves. Shimeru 08:45, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
There does appear to be a paucity of 3rd party sources, but I recreated the article with different content because the subject is notable. See Talk:T2_SDE. Obankston (talk) 20:14, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/436th Transportation Battalion (United States)

You deleted 436th Transportation Battalion (United States) even though there was no clear consensus to delete in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/436th Transportation Battalion (United States). You apparently ignored the Keep argument, and you gave no reasons for why you deleted the article. AfD's are not a vote, and unless there is a clear consensus (not a majority) for deletion the article must not be deleted. If the closing admin unilaterally deletes the article after a discussion, ignoring arguments to keep the article, then why do we even bother having discussions? I request that you restore 436th Transportation Battalion (United States) because there was no clear consensus to delete the article. Inniverse (talk) 04:01, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm curious as to why you feel I ignored the keep argument, rather than considering it. I've looked over the debate again, and I consider that a pretty clear consensus, not in terms of numbers but in terms of arguments. Shimeru 04:31, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Not delighted that you froze the loaded version of the lead for two weeks, especially as most non-partisan editors in the RfC had supported removing heavy detail that's already filling the body, but I suppose that's how it goes. Can you please take a look at Epeefleche's edit-warring summary of "vandal" [1]. I tried asking him to apologize/self-revert but my requests on his Talk page were deleted, I preserved them here: [2].

Cheers, RomaC TALK 18:40, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Pages are always protected at m:The Wrong Version, it's traditional. I'm definitely not about to choose the version I like best and protect that; that'd be an abuse of sysop powers.
People are entitled to blank sections of their own talk pages. It's understood that doing so implies having read the blanked material. I can see from Epeefleche's comments to the IP's talk page that he understands the vandalism policies: "Please note: vandalism is not indicated, as you suggest, in people not giving proper or any explanation for their reversions, without more. Though, of course, that can be an element of vandalism. Best.--Epeefleche (talk) 04:28, 15 August 2010 (UTC)" Therefore, his attention has already been called to the matter and he's acknowledged it. If he chooses not to apologize for it, that's his call; either way, if he continues that behavior, he can expect repercussions. No need to warn him a second time for the same incident, and I'm not going to start issuing edit-warring blocks for this one -- that'd be way too many for my tastes. Two weeks of protection will hopefully be enough. I'm thinking about asking some of the biography-related WikiProjects for their input on the RfC. Shimeru 19:24, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

UntouchableFilm Deletion

Hello Shimeru,

I was speaking with Uncle Milty regarding a page that was deleted: User:UntouchableFilm. He had asked that I contact you regarding it. I understand why the article was deleted, but I have not been able to see it for myself. Would you be so kind to place the page on my Sandbox? I created a Sandbox page just for it: User:Spops/Sandbox1. I would like to work on the article and get it up to Wikipedia standards. As far as Untouchable Productions goes... It was started by my brother, who is a film school graduate. His work has appeared in several film festivals, and is even featured in IMDB (IMDB - All My Fault). Unfortunately, he has no idea how to use a wiki correctly. So, I guess that is where I come in...

Thank you very much for your time. Spops (talk) 21:24, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks from the GOCE

Thank you very much for signing up for the Guild of Copy Editors' September Backlog Elimination Drive! The copyedit backlog stretches back two years, to the summer of 2008! We're going to need all the help we can muster to reduce the backlog to a manageable size. We've set a goal of clearing all of 2008 from the backlog, and getting the total under 5000. To do that, we're going to need more participants. Please invite anyone you can to join the drive! Once again, thanks for your support! If you have any questions, contact one of our coordinators—ɳorɑfʈ Talk!, The Raptor You rang?, or SMasters (Talk).

== Glass Tower

I noticed that it lost it's right to be a stand alone article. Some of the material was moved, but most of it was lost, for instance: the layout, the place where the fire started, the coords to the outdoor scenes were filmed etc. Apparently you supported the logic was that it was er, not notable enough. Der..the whole film was about the tower burning down...how is that not notable??? Using this way of thinking, maybe the article on the "Death Star" for example should be merged into Star Wars because after it's just place where the protagonists go?

Besides it really annoys me that once again the arbitrary way WP Rules lawyers operate wins again. On the deletion page, someone wrote that the Glass Tower's notability was defined by only one cinematic appearance, (and this point was not challenged by the deletionist agenda). Thus ignoring the fact that X millions of people around the world have watched the The Towering Inferno and seen the tower burn down! But don't want to find out more about the structure. Yet the using the same logic, why then is the Death Star article so untouchable? Simply because Star Wars has too many fans.... The decision to kill the Glass Tower article is both duplicitous and without merit (WP:IDL). Plus it gives the finger to the notion of good faith.

At the end of the day, it also demonstrates in a microcosm the manner in which Wikipedia now operates. It has nothing to do with its guidelines, verifiability or reliable sources. Article survival is just like global religions...

One person support's a view → they are a nutter; if lots of people take the view →then that's wikiality. In this case, a well meaning article that explained the size, structure and design of a titular building in a 1970's disaster film is chopped down and merged because a few people didn't like it.

*sigh* do you wonder why so many gifted people no longer bother with this site? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.172.7.57 (talk) 01:19, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Restore of deleted page

Hello,

I am leaving a message regarding the deletion of the following page

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Build-To-Order_(HDB),_Punggol

The reason for deletion was "Speedy deleted per CSD G11, was blatant advertising, used only to promote someone or something. using TW",

I personally do not feel so, as this page is a compilation of the past HDB Build-to-Order tender projects for Punggol (a district in Singapore), similar to the page for the "list of BTO Projects". Perhaps, as Punggol has too many releases in these recent years, it has been separated to its own wiki page (i have been following the BTO page for quite long). I do not know if you are from Singapore, but a little introduction - Punggol is a district here that is growing and our Government is trying to develop this district with more upcoming constructions of flats for citizens.

I doubt this wiki page was meant for blatant advertising, nor promotion of someone or something. However, i guess the person who created the page described it as "Upcoming waterfront paradise by Group8asia situated along Punggol Waterway, it will offer waterfront living and boasts eco-friendly features such as large courtyards and openings to promote natural ventilation and airflow to flats and common areas" made it seem like some advertisement. Will it be possible to change the description to something else and restore this page?

I work in the construction industry and find this page very useful, as to when i need to find information of a certain tender project in Punggol, i will refer to this page, especially when there are many upcoming releases. I personally use these pages as reference to my work and i am sure it is beneficial to others as well. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Renestarz (talkcontribs) 08:24, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Drinks Americas

Please explain why you deleted the page after I put a hangon tag, less than 20 minutes after a speedy deletion tag was put on? Markvs88 (talk) 16:07, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Because no reason for the hangon tag had been given on the article's talk page, and the article was fairly unambiguously promotional. If you'd like to volunteer to rewrite it, I can undelete it for you. Shimeru 16:14, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Well thank you very much, but if there is no reason for a hangon tag, there is no reason to bother editing Wikipedia. How the heck can you possibly say that, and how can you think it is acceptable to delete an article while someone is typing a justification for a hangon? Seriously, that's not speedy deletion, that's instant deletion. I had already done a revision of it about a month earlier (when I found the thing, I've rated the majority of the aricles for the WikiProject Connecticut). Naturally, this article isn't a high priority, but it did have verifiable references. Yes, it does need a lot more work. Yes, please undelete it and feel free to put it up with a regular deletion box if you want. I'll rewrite the thing. Best, Markvs88 (talk) 16:27, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
You'd be surprised how often people add {{hangon}} without ever providing any reason. I've restored the article. I'm not going to AfD it at this time, but there's no guarantee someone else won't. Shimeru 16:33, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough, I should be able to give it another "purging" today. Thanks, Markvs88 (talk) 14:01, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Restoration of deleted page

Hello there

I refer to the deleted link also mentioned by Renezstar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Build-To-Order_(HDB),_Punggol

If I may clarify, the (HDB) is the Housing Development Board of Singapore (Singapore being a small country in South-east Asia). A Build-to-Order (BTO) project is basically government subsidized housing (reference: http://www.hdb.gov.sg/fi10/fi10321p.nsf/w/BuyingNewFlatModeBTO?OpenDocument). Punggol is a small developing town in North-east Singapore, that has many BTO projects going on. You can see a similar site here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Build-To-Order_(HDB). This site lists most of the other BTOs going on in Singapore.

I personally am a future resident in Punggol. The deleted wiki site has all along been a useful tool for Singaporeans to track the developments, including the dates which the sales were launched, and the prices at which they were launched at etc. The site also lists the type of housings that have been launched in Punggol, the development completion timeframe etc.

The name of construction companies also assist residents in tracking who had actually constructed their homes. These are not advertisments for such companies. Residents may require such information when there are problems in their homes.

The above information are merely for easy record/reference, rather than advertisment of any purpose. I do understand that the information stated in the site can be easily misconstrued as an advertisment, and I hope that upon this clarification, you could assist to reinstate the helpful site, please! Thank you!!

GOCE newsletter

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Participation report — We have 71 participants in the September drive. 95 people signed up for the July drive, and in May we had 36.

Progress report — We have been making solid progress in eliminating the 2008 articles from the backlog so far. If we continue to focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Overall volumes are lower than expected though, with nearly a thousand articles yet to be done if we are to meet our overall target. If you have not yet participated in the drive, we recommend you do so. If each person who signed up edits one article per day from now till the end of the month we can eliminate another 1,065 articles from the backlog. All contributions are appreciated.

Announcement: credit for 10k+ articles — Participants editing a 10k word article may claim credit for two 5k+ articles on the leaderboard. Those that edit a 15k word article may claim credit for three. Regardless, the article is still counted as a single article in the tallies.

Reminder — Articles from the Requests page can be included in your tally, even if they do not have a copy edit tag. This is a great place to go if you are interested in finding a higher quality article to work on.

September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated! Several of our top editors were called away to real life concerns during the month (be careful out there, people!). This meant that once again, we did not meet all our lofty targets, but we did come close.

Stats

  • Out of 76 registered editors, 45 actively participated.
  • We nearly wiped out the 2008 articles from the backlog—there were only 13 remaining when the drive closed.
  • We reduced the backlog by 725 articles (11.5%), so it was another successful drive.
  • A total of 59 barnstars will be awarded to 40 editors—well done, and congratulations to all.

Barnstars
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the July 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, you may have earned rollover words, which counted towards this month's barnstars (except for the leaderboard awards). Any unused word credits will be held over for the next drive, as long as you participated in the September drive. Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars. Click here to see a list of barnstar winners.

  • We will be holding our next drive in November. You can sign up here.

A huge "thank you" to all editors who helped clear the backlog and to others who helped out behind-the-scenes. See you at the next drive, and until then, please continue to help us work through the backlog. Happy editing!

All GOCE members in good standing, as well as past participants of any of the Guild's Backlog elimination drives, are eligible to vote. There are six candidates vying for four positions. The candidate with the highest number of votes will become the Lead Coordinator, therefore, your vote really matters! Cast your vote today.
