Assistance please[edit]

Hello Skier Dude,

I have uploaded Jordan Filipidis.jpg from a news website for use in my article Top Shelf Coffee Inc., I have listed my reference and posted a description. I hope I am not breaching any copyright for I can't find image of comparable quality on a public domains etc. I've contacted Top Shelf Coffee and they will send me an image from their database so most likely I will change the image taken from the third party website, even though they didn't posted any kind of copyright notice. Hi SkierDude,

Can I use screenshots as photos? (E.g. If I take a Screenshot of a website or photo. Can I use it?) I ask b/c I see some articles on wiki that does this and isn't marked as speed deletion or copyright violations. (Virusunknown (talk) 21:45, 20 February 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Hope you could help me put this right[edit]

Hello Skierdude. You and Amorymeltzer once helped me sort out the images that I had some trouble with getting the appropriate license and copyright, and I thank you for that. I haven't been able to really check on these articles - Jeffrey Hyland and Charles Lockwood (author) for the past few weeks. Today I just saw that three of the photos on Hyland's page were deleted by Okki. Jhbh9 sent him a message on his talkpage, hoping to justify the tags that he put on them -- and here's his reply. I'm not sure if Okki's reasoning's acceptable here - talking about "assumption of good faith", or is it Jhbh9's call. What's the best thing to do? Thank you. Jxc5 (talk) 02:40, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Given that the iamges are on commons, IMHO, it appears that going through the WP:OTRS system would be the best bet to once and for all clarify the copyright status of the said images. Skier Dude (talk) 04:25, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding MusicfestNW entry[edit]

Hi Skier Dude,

I'm new to the Wikipedia world and have a question about the pictures you deleted. If the festival hired the photographer, we own the images. What licensing do I use so the image doesn't get deleted?

Thanks.

Image question[edit]

Hi,

I received an automated message from you (right?) about and image I uploaded not being associated with any pages. It is, however associated with a draft page in my user page. Is that not sufficient until I finish the page? Or will the image be removed until I am done and actually publish the page? I guess that's fine, but seems a little silly.

Thanks, Glenoir (talk) 14:53, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A copyright question[edit]

I have been reviewing the images in Ireland for a possible GA nomination and while I have found two sources for File:Carson signing Solemn League and Covenant.jpg the copyright remains unclear. I suspect that such an event would have been photographed officially, so crown copyright might apply but I also have not found any author listed, so maybe the 70-year rule for UK copyright applies. Page 3 of the copyright and permission pdf linked to from the bottom of this page would support my 70 year reasoning. You thoughts would be appreciated. I am watching this page so there is no need to drop me a {{talkback}}. ww2censor (talk) 14:34, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at those references as well, and since neither of them give the specific author, your suspicion that the 70-year rule would be more appropriate. My only concern is [1] which mentions the crown copyright (bottom of page - don't know if it's just for their original content or all of the contents) and gives something "(PRONI INF/7A/2/47)" that might indicate that it was an official pic taken for governmental uses... but still doesn't state outright that it would be a crown copyrighted image. Given that lack of clarity, I think the 70-UK would be appropriate, unless someone can point to something more specific! Skier Dude (talk) 01:14, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:EnidBandPic.jpg listed for deletion[edit]

"Whataya Want from Me" is a non-standard spelling, and -- in lieu of discussing your view -- you abuse your deletion tool to enforce a non-standard spelling? Seriously? UnitAnode 05:28, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to carefully read Wikipedia:Naming conventions (capitalization), Wikipedia:Naming conventions (music) & especially Wikipedia:Naming conventions before making unfounded accusations. For article titles we follow these conventions - regardless of what the "common" capitalization may be; variations such as irregular capitalizations are put in the article itself. The word from here is a coordinating conjunction and therefore the article title is f/lower cap. Skier Dude (talk) 05:47, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
P.s. - "move war" (your edit summary)?? 2 editors, Aspects & I, have followed the clear conventions to move this to the correct title - so, where's the war? Skier Dude (talk) 05:55, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So, we don't do reliable sources anymore? UnitAnode 06:02, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For an example of how MOS doesn't trump RS, see anyone lived in a pretty how town. UnitAnode 06:03, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For article titles, no; for the contents of the article, yes. The article titles reflect standard/proper English, while the article contents give the variations... Your example is one that needs to be corrected... I can trump that and give hundreds: User:Skier Dude/My Sandbox/bad albums. Also, you may note that WP:RS discusses article content and the theme/issue of titles isn't mentioned. Skier Dude (talk) 06:13, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You'd better go change the titles of all cummings' poems then. As for RS, I am talking about what the sources label the song as, and that overrides MOS concerns in totality. The sources clearly capitalize the "f", just as the sources don't capitalize the title of cummings' poems. Sorry, but MOS and your opinion don't override what the sources say. UnitAnode 06:16, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • For the record, a spree by you, of changing the cummings poems to capitalized will make both the project (and you) look idiotic. Our style conventions don't override reality. UnitAnode 06:18, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • You'd better hurry and change k.d. lang as well. Wouldn't want what people's names actually are to get in the way of MOS concerns, for sure. UnitAnode 06:21, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Moving discussion to relevant venue Talk:Whataya Want From Me as it's just going to wheel war here on contradictory policies (and, yes, I am aware that there are several 'variations on a theme' in capitalization Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people), Wikipedia:Naming conventions (books) • Broadcasting • Comics • Films • Manuscripts • Music • Operas • Television • Video games..., and follow theirs (i.e. k d lang) when it goes against standard conventions) Skier Dude (talk) 06:42, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Image uploading?[edit]

Hello, Mike Allen reffered me to you. I am a new user to wikipedia and in the past few days i've uploaded a few images that have been deleted. Could you please, if you have the time, explain to me everything about uploading a non-free image?

You deleted the article 09/14 2007 for the reason:
5:08, 22 August 2009 Skier Dude (talk | contribs) deleted "09/14 2007" ‎ (A9: Non-notable music by artist with no Wikipedia article)
But it's one of 3 EPs by the artist Danger_(musician), who in fact has a Wikipedia article. I believe both conditions for your deletion are false.

Replaceable fair use File:The_Death_of_Achilles.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:The_Death_of_Achilles.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 13:48, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding deleted photos from Columba Marmion page[edit]

I belatedly caught up with your File copyright problem notices for two images I uploaded to the Columba Marmion page, which you created on 31 October 2009.

Due to the delay, the images were deleted.

I have re-uploaded the two deleted images ("MarmionIncognito (1914).jpg" and "Marmion-Ordination (1881).jpg") with more complete licensing information.

I note that both images are in the public domain in the United States due to their having been published prior to 1923.

AfD nomination of Delta Pi[edit]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Delta Pi. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Delta Pi. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:08, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:The_Ten_Commandments_(1956_film)_screenshot.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:The_Ten_Commandments_(1956_film)_screenshot.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Fair use rationale for File:Logo fyeg.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Logo fyeg.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Logo used in Sandbox deleted 30 Aug 2K9[edit]

You deleted the logo for a company that I am creating a Wiki-article on, citing "‎F5: Unused non-free media".

The article is AND, since its inception, always has been under development within the Sandbox, as described in Wikipedia's criteria for article creation. According to the description for "F5. Unused unfree images", while images "not used in any article" can be deleted when such activity is noted "for more than seven days", the description also states that "[R]easonable exceptions may be made for images uploaded for an upcoming article". As the article exists in the Sandbox, it should have been considered an upcoming article, thus the image should not have been deleted (without, at least, mention of the Sandbox status).

I intend to re-up the image for the purpose of the article. If you intend to challenge this, I would prefer better reasoning for doing so, up front. THX

The image is not replacebale so I think an adequate rationale can be given. I had no idea it was tagged for deletion. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 22:07, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Transparent Screenshots[edit]

How do you take transparent screenshots in Vista and XP?

The article Ex parte or in camera has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

see talk page

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Nilotpal42 (talk) 12:07, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What is Literature?[edit]

Hi there. While working on the Sartre bibliography, I noticed the moves you made a long time ago to What Is Literature?, and I'm wondering whether it's me or you that's wrong about the capitalization. I don't think that the word 'is' should be capitalized, but I don't know what the wiki rule is on this (I couldn't find it in the WP: Naming conventions page you left in your summary) and I'm honestly not educated enough in things like this to know the rule in English. 'WiL?' seems right to me, but I don't want to take any action without being sure. I'd be really grateful to learn WHY I'm wrong in this if I am. ^_^ SSBDelphiki (talk) 12:29, 10 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Atlanta_Home_uniforms.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Atlanta_Home_uniforms.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Melesse (talk) 11:44, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have tagged File:Atlanta_alternate.png as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Some examples can be found at Wikipedia:Use rationale examples. Draksen[edit]

Dear Skier Dude, I am writing to know what copyright infringement did the article about "Draksen" (Mexican rock band) commit. As far as I'm concerned, "Draksen" is a made up word, in existence since 1989. True, the band was careless enough NOT to copyright the name, but I'd like to know what brand did this band "blatantly" ripped off with its name. There are several articles about the band roaming in the internet. The wikipeadia page was meant to direct interested parties to those web pages, since Wikipedia is a widely consulted source of information. If the band's name indeed coincides with another well established name/brand it is a mere coincidence. I repeat: the band's name has been around for over 21 years and it was a made up word. I thank you in advance for your kind reply.

My topics was deleted previously[edit]

Skier Dude - about 2 years ago (Feb 2008) I tried to add a person's information to Wiki. I was reject time after time for a variety of reasons, rejected again and again to the point of frustration.

My Question:

I can only assume if I try to add a reference to Wikipedia that it will be deleted/rejected per some arcane rules.

Would you be able to assist/guide me before I spend several hours getting my work deleted again? —Preceding unsigned comment added by AlexOtey (talkcontribs) 19:24, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Skier Dude has not been around since January of this year so I doubt he will help you any time soon, so I will try to give you some guidance. Looking through your history you were given advise about what is necessary to establish notability for any article and what is copyright material that we cannot use. If you can comply with that you will have no problem, but if you just go at it the same way you did back in 2008, you will probably become frustrated again. Remember, if you copy text or images from other websites, it will likely be copyright to some one else and cannot be used here without specific permission under a free licence. I suggest you start a draft page for your first article in your userspace sandbox, by starting at User:AlexOtey/Sandbox (just click on the redlink and start editing). When you think it is ready you can ask any other editor to review it and see if it complies with notability, referencing and copyright. Stay cool and work slowly. You can also/instead add a {{helpme}} template, with your question, to you user talk page to get some attention. Good luck. ww2censor (talk) 22:22, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the FfD tag you put on File:Liverpool colours.png, because it appears you hadn't nominated it for deletion, and didn't explain why you think it should be deleted. If you still want it to be delete, feel free to re-tag the image and make the nomination. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 10:54, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
I have seen a heck of a lot of persistent vandals without a useful contribution to their name never get blocked.
Sure, this K-- fellow was guilty of a lot of dubious image uploads, but mixed in with that are a large number of new pages.
Is it time to give the guy another chance?

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. — ξxplicit 00:32, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:When You're Gone Cover.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

Explanation: Your original image upload didn't comply with fair use requirements as specified in WP:Albums#Cover. The image was re-uploaded as JPG format because PNG isn't required for photographic content. Thanks – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 06:53, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Ronald McDonald.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Ronald McDonald.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone.

Thank you. Powers T 16:01, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion[edit]

Hi I recently was trying to make a page on Wikipedia (Storage Network Advantage). It's been deleted three times now and they gave me a warning about editing. I'm not trying to promote the business at all I was trying to do a bio. I find it interesting that it got deleted because I used to same format for this page as they did for PIMCO and a few other businesses. They said to contact an admin. There were no intentions to promote. I tried changing the information over and over to fit wikipedias criteria, but clearly I was still violating the terms and "advertising/promoting," although that was honestly not on purpose. Is there anyway you can edit/tell me what can and cannot be in the information that I put on there? I would really like to put background and bio about Storage Network Advantage and I would really appreciate your help so it's done correctly.

thank you.

Orphaned non-free image File:Eyebrow baby.png[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Eyebrow baby.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 09:59, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Image replaced[edit]

Hi, ages ago you uploaded an image of a German-language DVD for use on Madonna of the Seven Moons. Just thought I'd let you know out of courtesy that I've replaced it with an original UK film poster, which seems more appropriate on English WP (and it's a much nicer image too :-) Draggleduck (talk) 13:03, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
