New Page Review newsletter December 2019

A graph showing the number of articles in the page curation feed from 12/21/18 - 12/20/19

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

Parliament diagram link appears to be broken

Hi, I noticed yesterday that the link to the diagram maker isn't working. Do you know what's going on with the tool? Jay Coop · Talk · Contributions 23:06, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi Jay, the webservice has stopped and needs to be restarted. I am at work, so I can only do that in about 5 hours, but I've posted a request on the mailing list, so maybe someone will do it before then. I've also asked for help to understand why it's been going down, because this is now the third time since December! --Slashme (talk) 12:34, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
Alright, thank you for letting me know. Jay Coop · Talk · Contributions 21:18, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Actually when I was making a diagram it just suddenly broke down. Seafoxlrt616 (talk) 14:01, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi Seafoxlrt616, I've made some changes to the code to check for valid integers, so hopefully that will help with random crashes. If this happens again, you can message me here or mail me using the "email this user" link on the left. I'll be keeping an eye on the error log for the site from now on. --Slashme (talk) 18:23, 24 January 2020 (UTC)
  • I was just trying to show the tool to some people and then it was down. Nothing is urgent but I did come here to check in with you. Also I have some notes from our talk at
I never shared this with you. My intent is to use these notes to produce a news article in The Signpost probably in the context of United States election coverage. I have a colleague here at the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia who was looking at Parlitools and asking how Wikidata could host some of this data and if Wikidata can generally ingest all sort of election data, and consequently generate data visualizations. I know this all is steps removed from the diagram tool but I wanted to share with you that I present your tool to others. Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 15:31, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
@Bluerasberry: Crap, this is becoming a recurring problem. Thank you for letting me know! I've restarted the service, so it's running again. There's nothing in the error log, so I've asked again on the mailing list.
Thanks for your writeup! I might have a small correction or two, if you're interested. The two programmers who helped me with the interface improvements and WikiData integration, User:Ranjithsiji and User:Ambadyanands might be interested in Parlitools, because especially Ranjith was very keen to find tools which can hold politicians to account based on data and data visualisations! --Slashme (talk) 22:06, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
Trying to look into the problem. Update soon --Ranjithsiji (talk) 05:03, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello Slashme,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Math notation

Please look at this edit.

right: n/d + 1
wrong: n/d+1.

Digits should not be italicized in this context (nor punctuation, nor things like sin, cos, det, max, sup, log, etc.). And proper spacing surrounds the "plus" sign. See WP:MOSMATH. Michael Hardy (talk) 21:59, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

Suggestion for Diagram Tool

Hi, I would like to suggest the addition of some sort of tool for moving parties up and down a list as I like using the tool for multiple elections and of course occasionally parties gain more seats then other parties and in the case of that it is annoying having to type in all the information for each party again just to move it up a list. Just a mild inconvenience but this feature would be very useful Thanks, --SammySnail1 (talk) 21:11, 27 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi SammySnail1, that's a good suggestion. I won't have time to code it any time soon, but can you please add it to the project's to-do list? Then I (or someone else) can add the feature later. --Slashme (talk) 12:53, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

not mentioned? It's in the title HRO Today ...

The last entry needs to be corrected. Doesn't the title "HRO Today Launches First Annual Most Admired Employer Brand Awards for North America..." merit better than "No (Doesn't mention HRO Today)" To repeat from my Author Comment: Thanks; your source review chart shows effort and care. Pi314m (talk) 17:58, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi Pi314m, it's actually mislabeled: the real title of the article also doesn't mention HRO today, so I think someone messed up there. --Slashme (talk) 18:36, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

Error in Diagram Tool?

Today I tried the Westminster-style diagram in the parliament diagram tool and when setting the Spot shape options I noticed that the corner radius only accepts whole numbers. Hope I could help you.  C21H22N2O2 (V • T • E) 20:52, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Greetings my toxic friend! I just checked, and you can type any value into that box. Maybe the problem is that the spinner arrows increment by 1? I can change that in the interface, I guess. --Slashme (talk) 07:33, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
Exactly that. And when I enter a non-whole number, like 0.2, the box becomes red, so I didn't think it would accept that value. Probably better to change that. Thanks for the fast response! – C21H22N2O2 (V • T • E) 11:42, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
User:C21H22N2O2 what browser are you using? I haven't yet seen the box turn red! --Slashme (talk) 13:09, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
Firefox. I've been doing a little Javascript in my free time and if an input box doesn't get the required input, it will get a red border. – C21H22N2O2 (V • T • E) 13:42, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
User:C21H22N2O2 That's strange, it's just a standard numeric input: input class="right" type="number" name="radius" value = 0.0. I'm really crap at front-end / user-interface programming, so if you can suggest any improvements, feel free to send me pull requests on GitHub! --Slashme (talk) 14:48, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
There are specific attributes for input boxes: <input type="number" min="0" max="1" step="0.1">. These are really helpful when dealing with numbers as its possible to limit the input range to anything necessary. Hope I could help you. – C21H22N2O2 (V • T • E) 16:08, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
User:C21H22N2O2 I'm aware of that, but surely an input without these limits shouldn't get any red borders. Can you reproduce the situation where you got the red border and inspect the element in your browser, and let me know whether you can find any error? --Slashme (talk) 07:18, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Please see note on your DYK review. Yoninah (talk) 21:09, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

DYK for Francis Augustus Silva

On 21 May 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Francis Augustus Silva, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Francis Augustus Silva was promoted to captain in the American Civil War and later dishonorably discharged by mistake? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Francis Augustus Silva. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Francis Augustus Silva), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

The Head and the Heart discography

Hi, I have made a discography page for The Head and the Heart, but my edit was reverted. May I know why that is such? And to clarify, was it because the band didn't make enough albums/singles to qualify as such? Daerl (talk) 08:56, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Daerl, The main page for The Head and the Heart isn't so long that it's necessary to split out the discography as a separate page, and I don't think their discography is so independently notable that it needs its own article. --Slashme (talk) 09:00, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
I would disagree, seeing, for instance, that Michael Kiwanuka has a discography page and his main page is quite short too, but to each their own, I guess. Daerl (talk) 09:08, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
@Daerl, the fact that other similar articles exist isn't that relevant. The question is always, what serves the reader best. In this case, I think it's best to have all the information in one place. --Slashme (talk) 11:02, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
Fair enough. Daerl (talk) 11:34, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Best wishes from the typist from hell

Hi Slashme,

A little thank you for going over the Brandon Lee page. I think it is my best work on Wikipedia, and you made it better.

So thank you. If you ever need citations just ask.Filmman3000 (talk) 01:47, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

@Filmman3000 what a pleasant message to get at the end of a strenuous day! I landed on the article after reading about the Legend of the Bat and clicking through some links, and greatly appreciated it. --Slashme (talk) 22:26, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Supreme Court Layout

49.195.154.134 (talk) 04:19, 14 June 2020 (UTC) Just wondering if I can make perfectly horizontal charts that are commonly used in things like Supreme Courts, just that. 49.195.154.134 (talk) 04:19, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Horizontal seat layout
How about a diagram like this? It's made with the Westminster tool and cropped in Inkscape. --Slashme (talk) 09:20, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello

The speaker spot is white here

How Can i set border color for westminister parliament chart?

Hi EhsanAhmed, I haven't implemented border colours for the Westminster charts yet! I think that's a good idea. Can you raise it as a request at https://github.com/slashme/parliamentdiagram/issues/new/choose so that I don't forget? --Slashme (talk) 09:37, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
And to answer your question, until I implement it, you can make a border in two ways. Either edit the file in Inkscape, or edit the SVG directly in a text editor and change <g style="fill:#FF9933" id="Party1"> to <g style="fill:#FF9933; stroke:#000000" id="Party1">. If the line is too thick or too thin, you can add "stroke-width", like this: <g style="fill:#FF9933; stroke:#000000; stroke-width:2" id="Party1"> I hope that helps!

Also how could i make the chart background transparent?

It is transparent! If your browser is showing it as black, that's just the browser's fault. Many of these diagrams have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, and you can see that the background is transparent. If you open the example diagram in Inkscape you'll also see that the background is transparent.

and why the #ffffff color dont show? Like i used this on speaker spot but it didnt filled.please help and answer all the question.Thank You! EhsanAhmed (talk) 21:53, 13 June 2020 (UTC)

If you make the spot colour white (#FFFFFF), and the background is transparent, and you show the image on a white background, the spot will be invisible. It's still there, though! If you open this example diagram in Wikimedia Commons, you'll be able to see a light grey checkerboard pattern background to show that it's transparent, and you'll see that the speaker spot is white, with no pattern. --Slashme (talk) 09:35, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply i really appreciate it. EhsanAhmed (talk) 10:33, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello Slashme,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

Animated SVG

Hello. We've had some good interactions before: I animated your excellent Blender model, and you informed me of WP:MEDRS when I was still very new and overzealous in helping a Redditor add a site that seemed like a good resource because it was written by medical doctors, and thought it was better if I added it for free than if they violated our policies. You handled that case with a lot of professionalism, and I've admired you since then, especially as I've become more established as an editor and seen how some treat those who could be in violation of WP:PAID: shoot first, ask questions last.

Before I go on, I should say, please read my user page, the name on the emails before was a pseudonym, and I edit under my real name now. I previously used a pseudonym as I'm (in Wikipedia's eyes) notable, and lived in Philippines, so I was worried about possible action against me for writing articles like Republic of Philippines v. Pimentel.

I've recently been struggling with Wikipedia and animations. You seem like a good person to ask. What can be done about the requirement that we use the GIF format? Why can't animated PNG be used - don't most browsers support it now? If not, why don't animated SVG automatically thumbnail to animated PNG/GIF?

In particular, I want to make an animation for Bézier curve § Offsets (a.k.a. stroking) of Bézier curves. But, the requirement it be a GIF has frustrated me, and I wonder why we can't take the opportunity to improve Wikipedia technically at the same time.

All the best, Psiĥedelisto (talkcontribs) please always ping! 07:06, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi Psiĥedelisto! I've also made a few animated SVGs, for example File:DragonCurveAnimated13.svg and File:RootsBlower3LobeAnimation.svg, and would love to see them play on load or play on click, but as far as I know there's no immediate plan to make that happen. User:Cmglee has done a lot of work on animated SVGs and might know more. The problem as far as I can tell is that SVG support can be tricky, and maybe a big SVG or a buggy one can break some browsers? This is quite a technical question, and a look at Phabricator didn't get me much further, so I don't really have an answer. Maybe you can raise it at WP:VPT? That kind of thing gets discussed there quite a bit, but I couldn't find a direct match with this search. --Slashme (talk) 19:48, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Visualisation of the coin rotation paradox (animation)
Hi Slashme and @Psiĥedelisto: Quite a coincidence that I just made this animation last night! Embedding SVG animation has been an issue since 2016, and I don't expect it to be solved any time soon.
I've found a satisfactory compromise using a link={{filepath:FILENAME}} thumbnail parameter. Clicking the thumbnail of my image directly loads the SVG. In case readers are unaware of this feature, I added an (animation) link. The file description page can still be accessed with the icon to the right of the caption. It may be a good thing that the thumbnail itself is not animated: some people find motion in peripheral vision distracting. It's best to ensure that the thumbnail still looks good – counter-example: File:Toy_train_SMIL.svg.
By the way, File:DragonCurveAnimated13.svg is impressive. How did you make it, Slashme? Cheers, cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 11:56, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, the link={{filepath:FILENAME}} suggestion is very good! The source code to generate the dragon curve is here: https://github.com/slashme/Sieve/blob/master/dragon.py --Slashme (talk) 12:17, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks all, great idea in re: filepath! I assume it wouldn't be a problem to use the parameter on a GIF, either? So, upload two versions to Commons: a GIF for thumbnailing, and the SVG for link. Psiĥedelisto (talkcontribs) please always ping! 01:19, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
@Psiĥedelisto and Cmglee: I don't see why that shouldn't work. One problem with this idea: then you don't have a link to the Commons file page. Maybe include it in the description? --Slashme (talk) 09:24, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
Test whether you can use filepath to link a gif with an svg

By "Commons file page", do you mean the file description page? That can still be accessed with the Enlarge icon to the right of the caption:

"Enlarge" icon →

Other drawbacks are that a file linked this way does not appear under File usage on other wikis, and filepath always uses https (can't link to http version – older browsers may not understand TLS). Cheers, cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 16:05, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

P.S. An alternative that adds a prominent i symbol is to use an imagemap that has just one region covering the whole image (for some reason, filepath doesn't work and one has to add the full URL – note that "b/b9" in this example changes if the file is renamed):

<imagemap>
File:SVG_animation_using_SMIL.svg|200px
default [//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b9/SVG_animation_using_SMIL.svg]
</imagemap>

American Art

Hi Slashme / @Slashme:, I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this. I'm writing to thank you for the review of the Gehenna Press page! But I'd also like to ask you a couple of questions.

(1) My sandbox redirects to an earlier article too, and I'm not sure how/if to blank this out. In fact, I've had terrible trouble with anything sandbox-related despite a lot of research and questions. (2) I also just moved another small press draft into an article, but I made a hash of the title. Thus it's currently published as "It is. A Magazine for American Art Draft. Obviously "draft" needs to be deleted, but on the basis of parallel examples (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Art_(journal)) I realize the title should be (without terminal punctuation after Art): It is. A Magazine for Abstract Art [in italics] and in parenthesis it should probably say either (journal) or (magazine) —— I think, or should it? Can you help, fix or advise?

Brian Armstrong redirect

Hi. A question, so as to help me better understand process, if you would please indulge me... I looked at Brian Armstrong (CEO) for review. It had been converted from a redirect and some promo text added. I removed the promo text and still thought I'd revert it to a redirect. But first I checked to see if he was independently notable. I found a number of what I consider to be independent reliable sources, which to me reading gave the impression he is independently notable. I added the sources but left the article (in this state)) unreviewed as I wasn't 100% sure, and thought it better to have a second opinion. You reverted it to a redirect, so I'm interested to learn why you thought that should happen, given that to me he looks independently notable and the stub had enough sources. Hopefully I can learn something. Thanks. -Lopifalko (talk) 10:19, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi Lopifalko, all of those sources talk about him as the CEO of Coinbase. As far as I can tell, he's not famous for anything else, and the version of the article that you linked doesn't make a claim for any notability beyond Coinbase. That's the basis for my decision to make it a redirect again, but I don't feel terribly strongly about it. If you can find clear evidence of independent notability, go ahead. --Slashme (talk) 07:32, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Foodporn

@Slashme: Hi David. I hope you don't mind me pinging you here. I am contacting you about Talk:Foodporn#Redirect_or_article. You said you don't see evidence of vandalism, however if you look at contribs, you can see that he/she created their account 2 days ago, and all they have done is blanket deleted content made by me and others on food porn and foodporn, and removed the redirects. They have done no other edits to any other wiki pages or been active on wiki at any other time. Seems a little suspicious to me. I tried to have a conversation with them on my talk page, they responded once and I thought we were in agreement, and despite this they deleted further content. What constitutes vandalism if this doesn't? I edit lots of other food related pages and the only times I have never experienced this is when a competitor's employees jump into wiki and try to vandal their competitor's wiki entries (uber eats employees often do it to doordash, for example. Thanks in advance. H — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hazelsletterings (talkcontribs) 07:19, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi Hazel, you don't have to ping me when you put a message on my talk page - I automatically get notified. It's a great idea to ping me when editing other talk pages, though. And please do not hesitate to contact me or any other Wikipedian: we need more discussion, if only because it helps us to see each other as humans and build relationships!
I strongly urge you to read WP:AGF carefully. In the case of User:Hogohit, there isn't clear evidence of vandalism. For example, the Food Porn article contained the claim that the term comes from the foodporn website, which is certainly incorrect, and was cited to a Forbes article which says nothing of the kind. Removing that isn't vandalism, but rather the opposite. The first edit by that account was in fact removal of frank vandalism from a sports article.
On the other side, I am convinced that you also are working hard to improve Wikipedia, so we're all on the same team. Let's try and find consensus. --Slashme (talk) 07:17, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Undid your redirect, my apologies. We were both working simultaneously, and I had just begun to nominate Scotland Probables, and was adding this article to the AfD. Onel5969 TT me 14:29, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

Richard Cheese / Mark Jonathan Davis

Hello David. You deleted most of the content from the "Mark Jonathan Davis" Wikipedia page, stating it was "Not independently notable. All the references are about the Richard Cheese character."

But that isn't accurate. The original page clearly documented numerous examples of Davis as an established American actor performing under his own name. You can see his numerous credits as Mark Jonathan Davis on IMDB.com [ https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0205104/ ] as a voice-over actor in many Warner Brothers Cartoons, and he appeared on many TV shows as himself, including The Late Show with David Letterman, NBC's Friday Night, and Newsradio. Davis created numerous popular parody songs that aired on The Dr. Demento Show including "The Star Wars Cantina" and "Jeannie's Diner". Davis is also a published author.

Thank you. 2605:E000:60C5:4800:8537:85EA:7A9D:FFAE (talk) 08:07, 22 August 2020 (UTC)Carrie

I suppose this is the logged-out User:Richardcheese2 who is under a topic ban for this article, so I've alerted some other interested users on the talk page. --Slashme (talk) 08:30, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

I am not a Wikipedia expert, so I'm not sure what you mean. It is not my intention to intrude or bother anyone. I am just a fan of Richard Cheese. I don't understand your rationale; you said "All the references are about the Richard Cheese character" but if you read what was on the page, it was not all about Richard Cheese. As I explained, Mark Jonathan Davis is an actor and has an entire career separate from Richard Cheese; how is that not "notable"? The Mark Jonathan Davis page has been on Wikipedia for years. Why remove it now? Again, I am not a Wikipedia expert; I'd appreciate it if you could explain this more clearly. Thank you. --Carrie — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:E000:60C5:4800:D092:6F03:764E:6072 (talk) 20:27, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Here's the code I mentioned in our chat earlier today: User:Vexations/list sources. (remember: I'm not a qualified programmer) Vexations (talk) 17:48, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi Vexations, thanks for sharing! I'm also not a qualified programmer, so no worries on that score. I got it working without any problems. You also said something about keeping your own database of sources that you'd checked. Do you have code that checks the parsed URLs against that list? How do you add items? --Slashme (talk) 20:25, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
Slashme, I've used something I made up in JSON so I can do something like list_sources.py Article_name | xargs -n1 unreliable_sources .py. The database looks something like this:
"id": {
"name": "Example Times",
"domains": [
"example.com"
],
"type": "newspaper",
"description": "Examplian daily newspaper",
"discussions":["Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard/Archive 123",
"Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard/Archive 234"],
"reliable": true,
"independent": true,
"PA": "Centrist",
"country": "Exemplia",
"num_src": 5000,
"article": "[[Example Times]]",
"RS/N": "generally reliable",
"consensus": "generally reliable"
}
unreliable.py then reads unreliable.JSON Then I match the URL against the the domain. It's all very messy, but it works for me (most of the time). I'm afraid I can't share the database because it is full of notes about editors who I suspect of sockpuppetry and UPE.
Resources that might work for you (and that I'm inspired by) are User:Headbomb/unreliable.js and Rosguill's Wikipedia:New page patrol source guide. Of course we should always read the sources and not just look at a list, but as a quick guide, it's a useful tool. Vexations (talk) 20:57, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi evrik, I just did a bit of Google searching, and I can't find that term used in any published books. The first page or so of Google searches all seem to lead back to Wikimedia projects, so I think this is a term that originated here and hasn't really achieved general currency. I think the topic as such is notable, but I'm not sure about the right title for the page. --Slashme (talk) 07:12, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

DYK for Election apportionment diagram

On 7 November 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Election apportionment diagram, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that an election apportionment diagram (example pictured) is used to explain data in easy-to-understand terms? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Election apportionment diagram. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Election apportionment diagram), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Accuracy

Hi! I've recently been editing the File for the House of Representatives of Cyprus. I found the Parliament Diagram Tool extremely useful but I was wondering if it is possible to change certain aspects of the automatically generated diagram. Specifically, the number of MPs in a column in Cyprus is 3, but the automatic diagram sets it to four because the Parliament has 56 seats. I was wondering if this can be changed in any way. KnolGua (talk) 00:18, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi KnolGua, I'm glad you find the tool useful! I frequently get requests about whether one can make the diagrams more accurately represent a specific seating plan, but that's not something I plan to implement: the layout algorithm is simply aimed at producing a reasonable half-circle, as well filled as I can manage. It might make sense to actually create a reasonably accurate seating layout if that information is readily available. I can help here, because I'm a heavy user of Inkscape :-) --Slashme (talk) 09:19, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello, thank you for offering your help, I myself have near zero knowledge on graphic design (the most I have ever done is make charts on Numbers). The House of Representatives of Cyprus has 56 seats and ten parties. I've watched sessions of the House (from its Youtube channel) to try to understand how its seating arrangement works. First of all, there is an issue straight away for anyone trying to graph the seats: the House changed from its old building to a larger one due to the pandemic. The seats in the new chamber are arranged differently. While this probably wouldn't be an issue, since a graph could just show the house in its old layout, some MPs have changed their parties, and hence seats, since the temporary change. Nevertheless, I have guesses for where they would sit if the House convened in its old building, but more on that later.

If you are willing to make a graph on Inkscape (in which case I would be extremely thankful), then I can describe what it should look like. First of all, the 10 parties, in order of size, are: DISY (centre-right politically, 18 seats, blue), AKEL (left-wing, 16 seats, red), DIKO (centre/centre-right, 7 seats, orange), EDEK (centre-left, 3 seats, dark green), the Coalition of Democratic Forces (3 seats, centre-left, 4 colours but I think the main one is light blue) the Solidarity Movement (right-wing, 2 seats, dark blue), the Movement of Ecologists-Citizens' Cooperation (2 seats, centre-left, green), ELAM (far-right, 2 seats, black), the Citizens' Alliance (1 seat, centre-left, olive green), and The Independents (leftish, 1 seat, Purple) and one vacancy. Originally, there were 8 parties, and the Citizens' Alliance had 3 seats (of which one left and joined The Independents and 1 left and joined DIKO), DIKO had 9 seats (while one new member joined 3 original members left and formed the Coalition of Democratic Forces) and the Solidarity Movement has one vacancy from its original three seats for complicated reasons. The exact colours are in the file I linked to

The seats are divided into three arches. The innermost arch has 18 seats. The one in the middle has 21 seats. The outermost arch has 23 seats. This means there are physically 64 seats, 8 more than 56. This is because there are 3 seats for observer MPs representing ethnic minorities and 4 unused ones which I have no idea the purpose of. Each arch is divided into four directions, some seats are on the left half of the house, and do not curve, some are on the left half and continue in a curving direction outwards, some are on the right half and continue in a curving direction inwards, and some are on the right and do not curve. The innermost arch has 6 seats on the left and 6 on the right, and 3 curving seats on the left and 3 curving seats on the right. The middle arch has 6 seats on the left and 6 on the right, and 5 curving seats on the left and 5 curving seats on the right. The outermost arch has 6 seats on the left and 6 on the right, and 6 curving seats on the left and 6 curving seats on the right. By the way, I doubt there is a need to show the observers.

Now, regarding the actual seating arrangement of the parties: first of all, there are 18 straight seats on the left and on the right. Those on the right are all occupied by DISY. Those on the left are occupied by AKEL, with the last one in the innermost arch occupied by The Independents’ MP and the last one in the outermost arch unoccupied. However, the President of the house (basically the speaker) belongs to AKEL and sits in the middle of the house, at the bottom. There are also two secretaries but I think most parliament graphs don’t show them. The original seat of the President on the arch, which would be blank if he is depicted in the president’s seat, is the third seat in the middle arch.

The other 7 parties are in the curling seats (the "centre"). In the left-side curving seats there are 4 parties and the one vacancy. The innermost arch’s 3 curling seats in the left are the 3 seats of EDEK. The 5 seats on the left are, from bottom to top, (or left to right) the Citizens’ Alliance, unoccupied, vacant, the Solidarity Movement, and 2 Solidarity Movement seats. The outermost arch’s 6 left-side curving seats are all unoccupied, except for the two bottom/first/leftmost ones, which are the seats of the ecologists. In the right-side curving seats there are 3 parties. This is the part I am unsure about. DIKO and ELAM were here before the house changed. I assume the Coalition of Democratic Forces would also be here, even though it was formed after the temporary relocation. My assumption for how they are would be: the 3 leftmost seats here would be those of the Coalition of Democratic Forces. Then, in the 3 seats of the innermost arch, besides the one in the top left being the Coalition’s, the two remaining would be of DIKO. In the middle arch, the one on the top left would be the Coalition’s while the 4 remaining are of DIKO. In the outermost arch, the one on the top left would be of the Coalition, the one immediately next to it would be of DIKO, the two in the middle are unoccupied, and the two in the bottom right are those of ELAM.

If you have trouble understanding this based on the verbal description offered, I can send a rough sketch via email.KnolGua (talk) 15:46, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello Slashme, on October 24th you tagged the article Trend Receiver with the COI and the Notability tag. Thanks a lot for your attentiveness! Like you can see I have strongly edited the article since then to deliver a more precise message, also highlighting how the topic is positioned within academia and prectice. In this course I also revised the relevant literature. In my opinion, the issues are solved and the tags can be removed. I am always open for comments and suggestions! Regarding page at Foodporn which you flagged for deletion

Hi there Slashme. Nice to virtually meet you! :) My name is Jessica and I work at foodporn. I was trying to work out why our company wasn't appearing on wikipedia and then I came across your 'proposed for deletion' request at Talk:Foodporn. I have been looking into it further and see that there has been quite a bit of edit warring and vandalism going on at this page in the past. As you probably are aware, the space is super competitive and we get haters filtering through all of our social media. Anyway, our company has just been featured for a second time in Forbes so I was wondering what we could do to get the page put back up again? I understand there is currently a redirect going to Food_porn which would need to be removed for this to happen. I have reviewed wikipedia's rules and understand that as I work for the company I can't put the article back up myself as I have a conflict of interest, but I assume you can do it if you consider the subject is notable enough to appear on wikipedia? I have pasted the Forbes article below and a number of other articles (which are based off the Forbes article). Can you please tell me what you think? PS: I only joined wikipedia yesterday so apologies if I haven't completely worked out how to approach this and how to contact you. Appreciate your help :)

Foodporn2020 (talk) 06:11, 26 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi Jessica,
First off, welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you'll stay around here, and not just for marketing purposes. It's really one of the greatest projects of humanity, and every little helps.
I don't know whether you've had a chance to read the General Notability Guideline, but it basically says that an topic is considered notable if it's been discussed in depth in multiple reliable sources that are independent of each other and of the subject.
The new reference that you've linked here in its many syndicated locations doesn't help the notability of the article. Forbes is a big name, but this was a Forbes contributor / blogger, not part of the main magazine, and therefore not under the same level of editorial oversight, and not a reliable source as such. It also only mentions the company in passing, so it doesn't count as an in-depth discussion.
I have no strong feelings about Foodporn either way, and if you can show me that the company meets Wikipedia's notability criteria, I'd be willing to reinstate it. I would, however, be very concerned about anybody with a strong connection to the company editing the article, because it's so far been a magnet for non-neutral and unverifiable language.
Now one last point: your username. I personally think it would be great if users who are closely connected to certain companies were allowed to make this clear in their usernames, and in fact that's required in the German Wikipedia, but in the English Wikipedia, there is a policy against such usernames, and you are recommended to request a username change if you would like to edit Wikipedia.
I would be very willing to have an in-person chat with you to help you to understand Wikipedia. I'm in the German time zone - I assume you're in Australia, so your afternoon is my morning. I'm open to most VOIP and Video chat platforms. --Slashme (talk) 12:15, 26 November 2020 (UTC)

Thanks so much for your long and detailed reply. I will take a look at this in more depth after the Thanksgiving weekend and come back to you. Happy thanksgiving! Foodporn2020 (talk) 06:26, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

PS: I got my username changed at your suggestion ;) JessBless2020 (talk) 04:49, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

Parliament diagram tool bug

Greeting sir, I have been using the popular parliament diagram tool, but I've saw a message quote below when I am trying to make the diagram:

Oops, your diagram wasn't successfully generated! Maybe you have more than 31061 seats. If not, please raise a bug report.

I've checked the seats and didn't exceed the limit, so there could be a bug. It would be very appreciatied if it can be fixed. Thank you at first and looking forward to your reply! Cypp0847 (talk) 10:17, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

Oh I figure out that the bug came from the commas in the name column, e.g. "SA/CA/ICA" is okay but "SA, CA, ICA" is not. Cypp0847 (talk) 11:15, 29 November 2020 (UTC)
Hi Cypp0847! Well done on figuring it out. That's a bug that I'm aware of. I plan to fix it "real soon now"™! --Slashme (talk) 13:18, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi Cypp0847, I don't maintain a list of countries: it gets taken straight out of WikiData, using this query. Maybe you can check what the status of political parties in Hong Kong is on Wikidata, and if necessary make some updates! --Slashme (talk) 08:19, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello Slashme,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Maybe a U Shaped Diagram

Hello sir, I was wondering maybe you can add a U Shaped Diagram to the parliment diargam creator. Some countries uses that layout and it's quite common. Fab1442006 (talk) 14:05, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi Fab1442006, can you give me an example of the kind of diagram you're talking about? Are you referring to something like the Australian layout on this page? --Slashme (talk) 08:02, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
Sure Slashme. Absolutely, it's like the Australian layout. Here's another example but with the Malaysia Dewan Rakyat . I hope the picture from the news article helps in the visualisation better. --Fab1442006 (talk) 12:57, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
Fab1442006, in principle it would be possible to design that, but it would not be a great solution. The purpose of the semicircular diagram is not to directly represent the layout of a legislature, but rather to represent its makeup, independent of how the seats are actually laid out. Any program which tries to approximate the actual layout of a legislature will not be able to automatically assign the actual seats that are occupied by each particular party.
However, if you want to make a diagram which shows government on one side, opposition on the other, a "cross-bench" with non-aligned parties and one or more office holders like the Speaker in the front, you can try out the Westminster layout page. It might not be as attractive as a plain arch, but it makes the political alignment a bit clearer.
Another option that you might consider, is to simply make an arch diagram first, then edit it in Inkscape to get a U-shaped diagram by copying the bottom row downwards. If you're not confident in your ability to do this and you have less than 10 of these, I can do them for you if you make a rough sketch on paper. Or I can show you how, using desktop sharing and video conference. --Slashme (talk) 15:08, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

Filtration

Hi David, I though of you when looking at Filtration, which is a huge level 4 vital topic with very little of its scope covered. If you feel inclined, take a look and maybe add a bit of structure, some links, or examples, maybe even some content relevant to chemical engineering. I think the article will grow faster if there is more structure suggesting what can usefully be added. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 09:01, 13 May 2021 (UTC)

parliament diagrams

How can I put the Speaker or the Presiding Officer in the Arch-style diagram at the Parliament diagram tool? Greetings --Dragonlord73 (talk) 10:31, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi Dragonlord73, that feature has been requested, but not yet implemented. At the moment, the best way to do this would be to edit the diagram with Inkscape after making it with the diagram layout tool. --Slashme (talk) 03:43, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

Parliament Diagrams

In the Arch-style diagram at the Parliament diagram tool, please:

(a) try to also give an option to segregate the government seats on one side and the opposition seats on the other side (by this, I meant half of the seats on one side and the other half on the other side), just like this:

(b) add a deputy presiding officer above the dot for the presiding officer

Thank you very much!

09:10, 04 June 2021 (UTC)

I wonder whether the Westminster style diagram isn't a better solution for what you're trying to do. That diagram can separate government from opposition, even when they're different sizes, and it allows as many "presiding officer" / "speaker" spots as you want. --Slashme (talk) 06:21, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Requested Changes to Arch-style diagrams

Please can you try to add a feature to make symmetrical all arch style parliament diagrams, just like and ?
Also, if possible please do make provision of a horse-shoe type diagram, along with the presiding officer.

Thanks! —— User:Anish M. Nagpal 14:01, 05 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi User:Anish M. Nagpal, I'm not sure I understand the request. Can you give me an example of an asymmetrical diagram? --Slashme (talk) 10:58, 6 June 2021 (UTC)

Good morning!
By symmetrical, I meant that when one draws a vertical line such that the image gets split into two haves (i.e., left half and right half), the number of seats are same on both halves. For example, as seen in the first diagram, 24 seats can be halfed into 12 and 12 exactly. Similarly, if the second diagram is equally split, 19 seats lie on one side and nineteen on the other.
The sole reason why I was asking for symmetrical diagrams is because it is more convinient to notice the halfway mark that should be crossed to obtain a majority. An example of this problem: Once in the Indian state of Karnataka, its legislative upper house (of 75 members) had reached a situation, where the majority and minority caucuses had equal seats (37-37), due to which the chairman (also a member) had to, for two whole years, go on breaking ties. In such a situation, it is difficult to make out that both have same number of seats (if chart is not in symmetry). Hence, I requested symmetry.
Please also add a spot for the speaker.
Please can you have these put in the Arch style?
Here are some asymmetrical diagrams and .
Thank you very much! —— User:Anish M. Nagpal 11:21, 07 June 2021 (UTC)

@User:Anish M. Nagpal: OK, now I understand! The option to put a speaker spot in the diagram has already been requested, so you can follow the progress there. By a symmetrical diagram, I see you mean one where each row has an even number of spots. This is possible for diagrams with an even number of representatives, and for odd numbers, there would be two possible ways to make it work. I've created a task on GitHub to remind myself to do it. I've just moved to a new city and started a new job, so I won't have time to work on this project in the next few weeks, though. --Slashme (talk) 18:27, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

Good morning and thank you very much! I understand that you are a bit busy, so please take your own time!
I think option 2 and the outermost row would be better for the extra spot: https://github.com/slashme/parliamentdiagram/issues/102 (because in most legislatures, a party gets a seat in the innermost row depending on how many seats it has in the middle and outermost rows).
Thanks once again! — User:Anish M. Nagpal 10:29, 09 June 2021 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello Slashme,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

New license

Hi David, because there are 2000 or more appointment diagrams, I made for them the license {{PD-wpdc}} which is a version of {{PD-shape}}, showing its ineligibility. At the moment it's ready for English and German, in other languages it is just PD-shape until I (or somebody else) expands the language versions. May be you want to point at this license in your descriptions? The SVG-script makes everything automatically. sarang사랑 12:31, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

I had been thinking that you will avoid the W3C-errors about numeric starting IDs, as e.g.
<g style="fill:#E4003B; stroke-width:0.00; stroke:#000000" id="0_Labour-Party">; with e.g. an id="_0_Labour-Party" (almost every other not-numeric letter will do it as well) it will be error-free. sarang사랑 13:07, 3 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi sarang, thank you for the suggestions! I'll implement them both this weekend. --Slashme (talk) 07:06, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
You know: W3C-invalidity is nothing bad – but may be your fine work looks a bit nicer without that tagging? sarang사랑 09:44, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

I hope not to "get on your nerves" when I suggest some more possible changes.

  • With a width=360 and text-anchor=middle an x=180 gives a better centered number than the x=175 you are using;
  • a text-align=center is obsolete because the text-anchor does it.
  • An r="10" will do the same as an r="10.00". sarang사랑 07:44, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
Hi sarang, you're not at all getting on my nerves: those are excellent suggestions! I didn't get around to any useful activities this weekend, but as soon as I can, I'll implement them. --Slashme (talk) 13:33, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

Overtime

Instead of deleting the Overtime Sports Network, which is a major US company, can you please restore and provide feedback as to where it is promotional? It does not make sense that Overtime and Overtime Elite, do not appear on wiki. Bankrupt305 (talk) 14:27, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Bankrupt305, I am not an administrator, and therefore can't restore the article or see what it was like before it was deleted. At any rate, there is no reason to have separate articles about Zack Weiner, Overtime and Overtime Elite. Weiner is notable only in reference to those companies, so my suggestion is to have the Overtime Elite and Zack Weiner articles be redirects to the Overtime article, and to recreate it in a neutral way.
Might I ask what your connection to Overtime is? If you have a particularly close connection to a specific topic, it can be difficult to write from a neutral point of view. Also, if you're used to reading articles in the trade press, you might have habits of writing in a style that comes across as non-neutral and promotional in the context of Wikipedia. --Slashme (talk) 15:39, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. I work for Overtime - however I didn't write the Overtime wikipedia page as it long predated my arrival and have no idea who did. I disagree on the points about Zack and Overtime being two separate pages. Being the co-founder of both a major sports brand and a sports league should provide enough notability to have their own page, no? Bankrupt305 (talk) 16:13, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Bankrupt305, Please check out the policy about inherited notability. If Zack is primarily or wholly notable for Overtime (the brand and the league), he should be discussed on the page about Overtime.
Thank you for being open about your affiliation to Overtime! This means that you should take a close look at the conflict of interest policy. For example, I work for Mondelez International, so I don't edit articles about the company or its brands. There are narrow exceptions to this policy, but you certainly shouldn't be creating or editing articles about the president of your company, with very limited exceptions, for example to fix straightforward errors which aren't a matter of opinion, and which have clear references to support them. --Slashme (talk) 16:49, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

W3C invalidity

Hi David, just I made a test with your Wpdc tool. I used dummy party names "1_first", "2_second" which your tool tool converted to id="0_1-first">, id="1_2-second">.
Such id names are W3C-invalid ! Id's must not start with a numeric value.
But names starting with e.g. an understroke, as "_1..." are W3C-valid; as long as they don't contain spaces. Greetings sarang사랑 11:18, 15 January 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello Slashme,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 811 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 861 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello Slashme,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 15314 articles, as of 12:00, 30 April 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.

Hi Slashme,

Invitation

For those who may have missed it in our last newsletter, here's a quick reminder to see the letter we have drafted, and if you support it, do please go ahead and sign it. NPP Award for 2020

The New Page Patroller's Barnstar

For over 100 article reviews during 2020. Thank you for patrolling new pages and helping us out with the backlog! -MPGuy2824 (talk) 03:11, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

Here is a barnstar to show appreciation for the NPP reviews you did back in 2020. We realize this is late, but NPP fell behind in some coordination activities. We are just getting caught up. If you don't want to receive "old" barnstars, please just ignore this and reply (with a ping) to let us know not to send you any more. Also, we notice you haven't been very active here recently, and hope you will consider increasing your participation. The backlog is relatively high and we could really use your help. Regardless, thanks again for your past effort. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 03:11, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

Thank you! This motivates me to get back to work on the backlog! --Slashme (talk) 07:02, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

Brandon Lee's page

Hi Slash Me,

I have requested a page protection for Brandon Lee's page for which you have shown concern a while back. That person who comes around to spam this page is clearly mentally unstable as well as insensitive. While most spam are about his partner many are creepy and brutally impolite.

Mogadishu

Hi Slashme, I want to notify you that your post done on "Mogadishu under Italian rule" has been reverted again. Can you kindly fix it? It seems there are wikipedians who like to damage our wonderful encyclopedia because of personal hate...... 73.125.116.150 (talk) 14:17, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Actually, I don't think that article is worth keeping. I worked to keep it up so that it could be improved, but nobody is putting in the effort, and it doesn't add anything that isn't well enough explained at Mogadishu. It also contains some problematic neo-colonialist wording, so I'm happy to allow the redirect to stay in place, as preferred by User:Vituzzu and User:JalenFolf. I don't think it's fair to describe their efforts as "damaging Wikipedia because of personal hate". --Slashme (talk) 18:38, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
I've just globally blocked 73.125.116.150 as a lock evasion of brunodam's. Indeed he can't be trusted with writing a single comma. As soon as I'll have a couple hours to waste I'll clean-up his gibberish again. --Vituzzu (talk) 20:10, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi Slashme, those two (Vituzzu & JalenFolf) have erased 2306 posts I have created in wikipedia and destroyed 46 of my articles. How do you call all this? I call it: "personal hate" (because I have denounced their abuses & mistakes). I write on "Academia" and other websites, I have published books, but they never allow me to defend myself....like in the "Mogadishu under Italian rule", that in en.wiki originally it was like it is now in my blog ...BD — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.139.225.232 (talk) 17:40, 27 October 2022 (UTC)

Just stop. You've been blocked from Wikipedia for good reason. --Slashme (talk) 19:48, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
Ok...no problem (but the "reason" is a shameful mistake done to me when a relative visited me 15 years ago in my Florida home (and used my own computer) and an "histerical" italian administrator forever blocked me because in his wrong opinion I and the "relative" were the same person writing posts while using my florida computer in the same italian article: since then I have been blocked indefinitely without possibility of explain what happened....and my "rage" for this block has made me to write on thousands of articles and pushed me to create hundred of voices in many wikis -even if blocked- with sockpuppets). So, I respect you and a have a forever farewell. BD — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.139.225.232 (talk) 14:11, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

Parliament Diagram Maker

Good evening,

I am not sure if it is a problem with my computer or the software on the Parliament diagram maker, but it does not appear to be working when I try to create a diagram. Wikieditor019 (talk) 21:25, 24 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Wikieditor019, I just tried it, and it worked for me. Can you check again? --Slashme (talk) 08:06, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi, yes I have. It is when I click "Make my Diagram" the link doesn't appear for me. Wikieditor019 (talk) 15:06, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
Have you previously used the tool? I've just tested again, and the link is generated normally. --Slashme (talk) 19:47, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
No, I haven't. Wikieditor019 (talk) 20:50, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

Die Afrikaanse wiki

Hi David, I came across some of your earlier contributions at af.wiki and I am sorry to see you have retreated to anglophonia. As you may know I am Dutch and a solid state chemist and I have returned to af.wiki to find how much Chemistry and other stuff like geology etc. is missing. Even pages of elements like kopper or kalium had no references at all but loads of red links. And very few compounds had any info. Kopper got 14 hits a day, which is a lot for Afrikaans. Looking at the variation over time much of that comes from schoolkids. I'm now trying to brush it up a bit. But it is bit lonely. I could use another chemist, especially because my Afrikaans is sometimes a bit -how to say- northerly? As in: north of the equator.

Could I entice you to come back and write some more? Jcwf (talk) 22:17, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

P.S. Your favorite reisiger has not been sighted for a few years now. I don't particularly miss him. Jcwf (talk) 22:17, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello Slashme,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello Slashme:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2400 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
