Gianna Gessen problems

Hi, Smalljim, the latest edit to the article is Newman's, reverting me. As you no doubt know, I commented on the Talk page as to why I reverted the IP's edit. I have now read the subsequent comments, mostly by Newman and you (one by the IP). I lost good faith in Newman a long time ago and have no desire to discuss anything with him. I don't intend to revert Newman as edit-warring is not the answer. I'll continue to watch the Talk page to see if there's anything useful I can contribute. Depending on what happens, I'll consider any WP:DR options that might be appropriate to resolve content and/or user conduct problems.

Thanks for the supportive comments. I do try to give more leeway to new editors who show promise - WP needs them! Despite the dispute, I still think User:Newmanoconnor has the potential to be a net asset to WP, maybe fighting vandalism, combating socking etc., if he would put in a little more thought before clicking the button. He seems to be doing good work at MMA, and it's interesting that his postings there are far more coherent than at Talk:Gianna Jessen. Perhaps he enjoys an argument a bit too much. Anyway, this isn't the right place to be discussing his actions - my fault - so out of courtesy I'll let him know of this posting. But, for the record, I don't propose to continue discussing his actions now.

I'm still planning to post the results of my research on Jessen's birth, and what I think policy tells us that the article should include; I'd appreciate your comments on that in due course. —SMALL JIM 12:00, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Of course you "strongly believe" the company should have a page here, it would be most surprising if you didn't. I'll tell you for the third time that you really must read our conflict of interest guideline; you've given no hint that you have done so yet. Wikipedia is not a means of promotion, as explained here. The conditions for a company to be included in Wikipedia are set out in our Notability (organizations and companies) guideline, and as I said above there's scant evidence that Newsmaker Group satisfies the notability requirements - so its absence is no great loss to the encyclopedia. If you are interested in helping Wikipedia be a useful resource, then the best thing you can do is to contribute to some different articles - maybe you have some outside interests that you could add something useful to? —SMALL JIM 16:50, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Looking yesterday, I couldn't find any RS that listed them all so I restricted myself to what seemed obvious. You might ban an anonymous user? Doesn't it feel weird to be part of the dwindling Wikipedia cult? Doesn't it feel weird to be protecting the sanctity of the shocker page on Wikipedia? Doesn't it feel weird to have an emotional response to vandalism of the page of a highly marginal Australian Rules footballer?

Yes, it's immature to muck around. But wikipedia is an awful resource. I was trying in earnest to find information about Clarence Anglin and was re-reminded, when directed to Anglin's page, of just how low the quality of Wiki's content is. Wikipedia has really fallen apart at the seams. Though, obviously, it was never a strong product to begin with.

In case you ever come back here, I'll say that your remark has some validity and I've removed that paragraph from the article, though mainly because it doesn't appear to be based on reliable sources rather than the standard of writing - even 4th graders are welcome to contribute if they do so in good faith. The important thing, of course, is that you could - should - have done something helpful instead of splattering "The above is incomprehensible. Who wrote this tripe? They call this a free "encyclopedia"?" on the article. And yes, I am aware of the irony that your vandalism has still indirectly helped improve the encyclopedia. Cornish flag

WP harbours a number of conflicted editors whose main purpose is not to improve the encyclopedia. Some of them are Cornish nationalists, and whilst they should certainly be allowed their say, their statements must be verifiable and the space allocated to them must be proportionate. I loooove boats and pageants, particularly pageants with boats!

One of the highest points in my life was the Parade of Sail on Sydney Harbour, 26 Jan 1988 to celebrate the Bicentenary. Oh, it was glorious! The sun shone! I had an ideal position at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy which had been set up some days earlier at Mrs Macquarie's Chair, on the point adjacent to the Opera House point. The craft had all sailed up from Hobart. (They run a Sydney to Hobart yacht race every year, but that year it ran Hobart to Sydney). They had all docked at Darling Harbour, the other side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, with the Juan Sebastian del Elcano (almost the tallest masts in the world) having to wait till low tide. Anyway, on the great day, everything that could sail took to the harbour in a huge procession, which made the Thames affair pale by comparison. There would have been a dozen huge tall ships, including two with four masts, and the afore-mentioned with the largest sails in the world. Then there were perhaps 80 moderately-sized schooners and barques, every yacht from Sydney, Newcastle and the 'Gong, every fishing boat from 100 miles north and south of the harbour, twenty or more ferries, four steam boats (one of which had chugged all the way from Bali under its own steam). Then there was every motor launch from Sydney Harbour and Broken Bay, hundreds and hundreds of them. And in between them, in this total muddle, were people in row-boats, canoes and kayaks. I can't imagine why the Guinness Book of records listed the Bremerhaven event as the biggest flotilla pageant. It wasn't, not by a very long way! ...sigh! [2], I love this pic with the steam launch Lady Hopetoun right at the front to the left. The four -master is Nippon Maru, [3], What a lovely day it was! [4], Here's the Polish ship Dar Mlodjedziezy going under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, [5] and here are some of the largest, including Juan Sebastian, in Darling Harbour [6]. There is a classic picture of some absolute ning nong trying to get his little yacht run down by the rather large "Gloria" but I can't make it stick! Amandajm (talk) 10:50, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

You are indeed keen. I'd guess that you stayed up late to watch our small and damp Thames pageant. It was on TV in the room while I was doing other things - I can confirm that the BBC coverage was indeed dire, as many have reported. —SMALL JIM 19:45, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

I did watch the "small" damp pageant, every second of it. I stayed up till 4.00 am in a freezing room (no double-glazing here) unable to go to bed until that old lady got herself in out of the cold.

I cannot imagine why someone didn't take charge of the pair of them and insist that they went down for hot tea and toilet at some point in the 4 hours. I do wish that Queen Bea of the Netherlands had been there. She is probably the only person in the world who can deal with HM on an equal footing. She would have simply wrapped her up in a fur coat and a tartan rug and that would have been that! No-one would dare say No to Queen Beatrix.

I watched part of the BBC coverage, but at the point at which the Horrible Histories man started to do his loud and horrible thing, while "Jerusalem" was playing on the other half of the screen, I dropped out. The only good commentator on the BBC was the one who knew about ships, protocol and the workings of the Tower Bridge. I had another screen, which had no commentary at all, but unfortunately, if I wanted to know the details of the craft I had to keep returning to that appalling trivia.

Talking about trivia, I have been having an edit war at Elizabeth II where the whole article is heavily weighted in favour of the trivial. It took about four goes, over a year to convince the quorum that incidents like 1. visit to Ireland 2. visit to Pope 3. Addressing US Congress were significant.

Even a few days ago, one of the quorum deleted reference to war in Iraq and Afghanistan from the Intro, as being not relevant to someone who is only a figurehead, not political leader.

I cannot get them to accept that the most important facts of her reign (and life) must be treated as FACTS, i.e. The Queen acceded the throne on date. Rather then On her accession, she........ Her coronation was the first televised now has a date in it, but they have reverted my statement The Queen was crowned on.... at least six times.

Another thing repeatedly deleted (almost beyond belief) is the statement that Word came that "her father" was dead, which I reworded as Word came that "the King" was dead. They appear to have no understanding that "the King" was Elizabeth's KING as well as her father, and that, in the terms of an encyclopaedic article, "the King" being dead had greater impact on her life than "her father" being dead, regardless of the personal sadness.

I am so sick of the lack of real understanding of the monarchy these people bring to the article, while at the same time, being able to trot out correct spelling and modes of address. The justification for a total reversion was that "Townsend" was spelt wrongly in a footnote, and the reverter didn't like the phrasing of a sentence.

I am feeling so frustrated that I eventual reported the 3rd Revert within about an hour, having had the same thing happen last week.

Could do with some backup.

Looking at the history of Elizabeth II, the lead is now considerably better than it was before you started discussing it on the Talk page, and I'm sure that a lot of the improvements are due to your work. It's a pity that you didn't take part in the FAC discussion - once an article has been featured it's assumed to have been approved by a number of experienced editors, so getting significant changes to stick is always going to be an uphill struggle. Perhaps it's time to look back at what you've achieved rather than worry unduly over what still needs doing. Are you still having fun?

Thanks for the encouragement! The Thames Pageant thing was great fun! It just seems odd that a major contributor to the article is sitting here on the other side of the world, having watched it on tele, rather than at the riverside. My family were there, and ended up watching from a pub, where my 4 yr old granddaughter stood on the back of a seat, and had an excellent view, but the rest of them only caught glimpses.

It's so blinking freezing and wet, I wish I was in London! Do you like poetry?

Poetry? Well one thing I know about it is that it's vital to listen for its meanings, whether they're up-front or subtly expressed. The same applies to all communication, of course: I've looked at some of the comments that have been made recently on your actions and I can see some not-so-subtle concerns being expressed. Afghan Hound Academy Page.

This is an informative website which is in concept and development stage coupled with a discussion group concerning afghan hound dogs and has recently been cited in Dog News USA as one of the most informative and respected Facebook discussion groups available. We are developing the website further. Academy is an on line educational resource using the Facebook API. The reason for the wiki page is to add this to the encylopedia due to its status as a very relevant touchpoint for people involved in afghan hound dogs from the American Kennel Club to over 1400 people globally who enter into debate on the breed. This was not entered for promotional reasons and is not simply a blog forum. The Academy is quickly becoming a very important touchpoint for these niche global community in the past months since its inception hence why I write this and say that this article should NOT be deleted and be reinstated. This was deleted by Smalljim within 10 minutes of being published. Thank you

Corruption of image file

If you browse through the corrections that I've made so far to some 350 of the articles you've edited, then the benefits to WP of 'following you around' should become apparent. They're mostly related to compliance with our house style - if a detailed explanation would help you, then I'd be happy to give one, though not all the corrections will have been to your edits, of course. Working alphabetically (and sporadically), I've reached Purleigh and there are about 600 articles still to check. I submitted the above article on 30 Aug and it has been reviewed and declined twice (latest by yourself on Sept 1st). I have since edited and improved it in line with your recommendations but now when i click 'Save Page', it no longer gets reviewed nor indeed appears as an article submitted for review.

Have I done something wrong or is there another reason why it can no longer be reviewed?

Having read the 'Conflict of Interest' page, I cannot see any reason to reject an article on that basis. I understand that it means that I must exercise extreme caution in the manner in which I edit the page so that it remains a neutral article and I believe that I have done that.

OH to HO

I was trying to change the numenclature on wikipedia pages from the old-fashioned OH, once used is molecules such as OH2, O2H2 or even OH3+, to the more modern HO. Apparently, you misenterpretated this as vandalism and put it all back the way it was. I'm afraid that the fact that no-one else has noticed this apparent "error" suggests that it is your interpretation that's faulty. You could perhaps have avoided the warnings by writing an edit summary explaining what you were doing - the edit page does prompt you to "Briefly describe the changes you have made". Without such a pointer to your intentions, two of us independently decided that what you were doing wasn't beneficial. I understand the decline process (perhaps I should have AFDed them from the beginning) but don't understand how you deemed these edit summaries appropriate? The first one seems perilously close to WP:ILIKEIT. And the second seems like WP:OTHERCRAPEXISTS. They reek of arbitrary judgement, am I mistaken here? Maybe I didn't word those as carefully as usual, but there's bound to be an element of personal opinion in coming to a decision in cases like these. Remember that we're dealing with places in India where the existence of reliable sources is not always immediately apparent. I took a cautious attitude - with our need to counteract systemic bias in mind too.

Further, the Empress City Mall, Nagpur claims to be the biggest mall in Central India, which is a credible claim of significance (A7). I accept that the case for Poonam Mall, Nagpur is weaker, but neither of them was irretrievably unencyclopedic (G11). Let's see what your AfDs turn up. —SMALL JIM 20:35, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

Let me clarify straightaway that I am not a pusher of anti-Indian POV, mind you that. Nonetheless, as a reviewer (probably still a novice patroller) I think I need to look at articles on a case by case basis. Your reason on this page may be an argument that these articles are not bad enough to be speedily deleted; but that does not mean it should be kept permanently, or does it? I don't question the legitimacy of your decision on the Empress mall article and you were right the Empress mall does claim its significance. But you should have picked your words carefully while justifying your action. Agreed that a plethora of non-notable articles exist that probably should not. Equally, a lot of articles do not exist that probably should. I have thus with good-intention AfDed them. Please do not look at it as a matter of personal ego or POV-pushing.
