Welcome![edit]

Hello, Smokayparkin, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you edited was Lift-Off Film Festival Network, which appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or another editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

One rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! 331dot (talk) 13:47, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Re your page[edit]

I assume you had previously registered the username User:Lift-Off-Film; if so, thank you for changing it. Please note, though, that changing your name does not remove any conflict of interest issues that you might have if you are associated with this event. If you are, please review some of the links above to learn how to edit when having a COI. 331dot (talk) 13:48, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I would lastly add that if you are being paid to edit here, you are required to clearly state that on your user page(or on this page); please review this page for more information. 331dot (talk) 13:49, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Los Angeles Lift-Off Film Festival requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organized event (tour, function, meeting, party, etc.), but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. A tag has been placed on Lift-Off Film Festival Network, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Smokayparkin. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your circle, your organization, its competitors, projects or products;
  • instead propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. BoxOfChickens (talk · contribs · CSD/ProD log) 23:57, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Citing the IMDb[edit]

Hello. I have noticed that in a couple of articles you have cited the IMDb as a source. Please note that Wikipedia will recognize it as a reliable source for only certain types of information. This is because much of the IMDb's content is user-generated and that content would constitute an unreliable self-published source. Please refer to Wikipedia:Citing IMDb for a fuller explanation.

Also, please heed the above notices regarding conflict of interest. If you are employed by or otherwise paid to represent the subjects you are writing about, disclosure of this fact is mandatory per the Wikimedia Foundations's terms of use. Even if you are not being paid but are doing so in a volunteer capacity, disclosing your connection is a demonstration that you are here to edit in good faith. Thank you. --Drm310 (talk) 07:08, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am finding it really difficult here to not cite a press source, or IMDB, or any other film related press. The problem here is that only the Press, IMDB, the venue websites, the actual festival website and the filmmakers own personnel sites have this information. I am certainly not being paid by anyone to write this. I was hoping to just document something which exists from a purely volunteer level. I really need some assistance here with what you are all stating as I don't see it as promotional whatsoever, there are no ticket prices, not information on future events, not description of companies mission, targets, or ethos. All of this is neutral - it's an awards platform identical to the private company known as The Academy of Motion Picture and Sciences, their Wikipedia page has tons of press links and links back to the Academy's actual website. I'm worried that wikipedia actually has bias towards the bigger awards platforms, as i doubt there much "hardline" like this to whomever wrote that page, and the contributors since. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smokayparkin (talkcontribs)

There are instances where direct sources are permissible, but they do not establish notability; only independent reliable sources can do that. It is true that it is much easier to write about a large event like the Academy Awards or the Super Bowl, but there is no prohibition against writing about smaller events if they have independent reliable sources to support them. There are many articles on small events here.
It is important to understand that it is possible to promote something without advertising it or selling something. Wanting to "just document something" because "the festival has a poor website" is promotional when the page lacks independent sources. Wikipedia is not just for documenting something, as otherwise we would accept articles on your neighborhood gas station, your neighbor, and you and I. Article subjects must be independently shown to be notable(in this case, per the event notability guidelines). 331dot (talk) 11:08, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

January 2016[edit]

Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you. 331dot (talk) 11:08, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
