Edit warring on Montana[edit]

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Users who edit disruptively or refuse to collaborate with others may be blocked if they continue.

In particular the three-revert rule states that:

  1. Making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24-hour period is almost always grounds for an immediate block.
  2. Editors violating the rule will usually be blocked for 24 hours for a first incident.
  3. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes. Work towards wording, and content that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If edit warring continues, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Viriditas (talk) 21:32, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bozeman[edit]

The reason the Big Bang Theory reference keeps coming up for Bozeman is because it's how the overhwelming majority of people will have heard of it. I certainly don't see why you feel the need to remove it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lucius Winslow (talkcontribs) 22:26, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's not really for me to edit it back; I'm not a Bozemanite, I'm not even from Montana, but I'm an inclusionist by nature, and who is to say what makes a page silly? I mean if we took a puritan view on it pages like Sea Land wouldn't even exist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lucius Winslow (talkcontribs) 00:39, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Eastern Montana has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Completely arbitrary regional designation unsupported by any sources

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Mike Cline (talk) 22:08, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A Big Bully[edit]

SGTMY--Not the most civil of approaches to establishing collaborative working relationships. We all have our own styles. User:Montanabw works hard to to improve WP. If you have an issue with the way BW communicates, please work directly on the talk page. Raising personal issues on an article talk page is not the way to go. --Mike Cline (talk) 01:57, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent edits[edit]

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button or located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when they said it. Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 01:16, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your HelpDesk query / ANI report[edit]

Hi Soglad, just to let you know, filing a complaint at the admin incidents noticeboard is a pretty severe step. I read over your question at the Help desk and frankly I think you are over-reacting. I'm willing to discuss with you what you are having a problem with right here, and I'm sure others will we happy to work it out as well. Going to AN/I at this point, while you certainly can do that - I've looked into this a bit and I'm pretty sure you will lose big-time. Can we all discuss this without a huge audience? Franamax (talk) 06:12, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your question at the Help desk and spent about an hour today looking through your own edits, various page histories, and talk page discussions. Then I got distracted before posting here a while ago, for which I apologize. I'm really confused here as to what your complaint is, do you feel that you yourself have been treated badly or do you have a grievance with the way Montanabw edits? If it's the former (something against yourself), then can you supply a specific diff that shows someone being rude to you? Note that having your own article edits reverted, or having your own view not adopted as a result of talk page discussion is not rude at all, that is the normal way we develop articles. I couldn't find any spots where other editors were going out of their way to mis-treat you, so please do provide examples. If you are concerned about, for instance, the way Montanabw and Rjensen interacted, that was actually prerty standard disagreement over article content. If you see other editors getting nasty with each other, you do have the option of filing a wikiquette report, but it can be handled better on user talk pages. If you have a grievance of your own, please explain it here. Your own edits claiming others are "stalking" your edits are more of a problem, as you seem to be a fairly new editor not familiar with watchlists and other editors showing up for whatever reason. I'd recommend you read around a bit more and get a better feel for how discussions work here before filing AN/I notices - but if you have something specific, I'm listening. Franamax (talk) 06:59, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm equally confused. I am concerned that this editor is operating out of a deep misunderstanding of some sort. I revert, I explain, this editor attacks my edit, I explain again, and then I'm accused of being some sort of evil bully or something. Quite a disproportionate overreaction, IMHO, but if there is some genuine woundedness or misunderstanding, I'd be glad to clear things up. Montanabw(talk) 18:27, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Soglad; you don't know me from Adam (or Eve), but I first encountered Montanabw about a year ago, when I was having real trouble understanding why my edits weren't OK. Montanabw and a couple of others took the time to explain really thoroughly, and we chatted at vast length (I do that. Often.) And Montanabw and some of those others became my team of hand-picked mentors while I was learning the ropes; there are loads of people here who will be only too glad to help a well-meaning, enthusiastic, but inexperienced editor to find their way around, to teach them how we do things here, to coach them through things they really didn't think they'd ever be able to do, and to bring out the best in them. Montanabw is one of those people, and from what I know, I can absolutely guarantee you that no hurt or harm was intended. Do work with Montanabw and our other experienced editors; you'll find aspects of yourself, and abilities, that you never knew existed. Misunderstandings are very common, especially when we're new, and especially when we don't "know" the people with whom we're dealing, but misunderstandings can always be talked out. It's not a case of winning or losing an argument - it's a case of making sure that articles are produced and developed in the right way, and helping to teach people what is "the right way" for this particular environment. If you want to learn how things go here, then Montanabw will be one of your most valuable allies. Pesky (talkstalk!) 20:57, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Moved from my talk page as I prefer to keep discussions in one place and I'm watching here. Franamax (talk) 22:57, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I understand what a commodity time is and thank you for yours. My main concern is not attacks against me by Montanabw‎ or the banter on talk pages however this person can have a very sharp tongue there it is mostly the uncalled for rude comments when reverting edits by others. I don’t see the need and I don’t see other editors doing it. People have feelings. I don’t have a lot of time to spend here but when I do I would like to see people dealing with these things in a civil manner. I am not looking for any big smack down here. I went to a help page with this and then was referred to WP:ANI .

Thank you for your time

Soglad Tomeetyou (talk) 11:13, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well first of all, you can't force people to be nice, and everyone has a different standard for what "nice" is anyway. Personally, if I have to choose between you being nice to me and being honest with me, I'll pick honesty every time, that way I know where I stand. Ideally you will be nice and honest, but I'll never demand it of you. There are many reasons why people get rude here: article editors get pretty intense about their work and when others come along who know much less about the topic and the way the site works, they can run out of patience pretty quickly, the longer you've been editing here, the harder it is to remember you were once a clueless newbie asking dumb questions and making bad edits too; sometimes people are rude here because they know they're wrong but are never going to admit it; sometimes they just have a habit of bullying people and trying to drive them away - those are problem editors in my opinion. I don't see Montanabw as one of the problem editors in that way, and they seem to have dealt with you pretty fairly. Again, if there's something I'm missing, I think WP:DIFF explains exactly how to post what you had a concern with, or you can just post the page name and the date and time of the edit. I did see Montanabw being rude to another editor recently but 1) they went back and struck out the bad parts of what they said; and 2) you have to also look at the context, which if I understand it was an editor wanting to not use hands as the primary unit for height of a horse - which anyone familiar with horses in Britain or North America would totally choke on. They did leave behind a pretty rude edit summary, which is unfortunate because there's no way to go back and change those, but it's done and I think they understand they were crossing the line.
My advice to you (and anyone else really) is to just concentrate on making sure your own words and actions are above reproach. Stay calm and cool, preview your edits, and if you find you're getting sharp in your language, close the edit window and go do something else for a while, whether that's on Wikipedia or on the rest of our planet. At least that works for me anyway, and when I log back in I see the whole site didn't fall apart without me. :) And do edit more articles and read more project pages, it will help you get a feel for things. If your larger edits get reverted, try smaller ones, discuss on article talk pages for article issues and on user talk pages if it deals with one editor. And you can ask questions all over the place, like you did at WP:HELP, or at many editor talk pages, mine is always open if you have questions in future. For this specific issue, please follow up here and I/we can try to help you. Franamax (talk) 22:57, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
