DYK for Seymour Goes to Hollywood

Dizzy and the fearsome blob of lard

Hello! Thank you for your rating and comments over at Magicland Dizzy. I've been meaning to drop you a message for a while now as it was your excellent work on Seymour Goes To Hollywood that prompted me to check out the state of the Dizzy articles on Wikipedia (both great memories from my days owning a ZX Spectrum). I was just wondering whether you might have anything to add to the Magicland Dizzy article that would help move it towards GA? I can't find sources that really discuss the development (besides the Oliver Twins own website) so that is definitely an area for improvement. Are there any other particular tweaks you had in mind as I would like to give it that final push up to GA? I'll probably take a look at Fantasy World Dizzy next though all of the Dizzy game articles are in a fairly dire state! Cheers. Nick Ottery (talk) 08:50, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi Nick, I'm a little pressed for time ATM but I would like to have a good dig around for sources and discuss the article when that changes. The GamesTM source I used for Seymour's development section may be of some use, since the developer Big Red Software was responsible for Magicland Dizzy and that experience resulted in them creating what was supposed to be a new Dizzy game. I have another article covering all the Dizzy games around here somewhere (in an issue of Retro Gamer IIRC) which may or may not be helpful. There are some places where magazine scans are stored which you may not be aware of as well. When I've had a chance to look through these things I'll drop you a note, though I'm not sure when that will be. Thanks for getting in touch. Someoneanother 15:44, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
The issue of RG might help a bit.
  • Crookes, David (2007). "Company Profile: Big Red Software". Retro Gamer (42). Imagine Publishing: 76–81.
I remembered the article once I saw Seymour Goes to Hollywood at GAN and found it in my mags. It only has snippets on a handful of Dizzy games. Not a lot, but still useful I'm sure. (Guyinblack25 talk 16:02, 22 June 2010 (UTC))
Thanks for that GiB, and for your excellent improvements on the Seymour article. I think there is a more modern piece around somewhere (it might even be in the retro section of a GamesTM magazine, I've got a subscription to both mags). In the meantime there is at least one magazine article which can be of use, I'll let Nick know. Someoneanother 17:16, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for all the feedback guys! I've just started to go through the points raised. I thought it would be good to place all the feedback on the article talk page to centralise relevant discussion. I hope you don't mind me copying over your excellent comments across from my talk page Someoneanother. They are now on the article's talk page in a summary form. Geneforge and others lead

Hey! I tweaked the lead for the GF2 article you are currently expanding. For a second opinion, do you think this lead is suitable:

Geneforge 2 is the second video game in the Geneforge series of role-playing games created by Spiderweb Software. It was released as demoware for the Macintosh and Windows platforms in 2003.

I think it addresses all the major point "video game", "Geneforge series", "RPG", "demo/shareware", "Mac/PC", "year". May be also link 2003? I would suggest finalizing it and then placing for every Geneforge/Avernum/Exile game or at least where applicable in one form or another) for a perfect consistency. What do you reckon? —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 11:54, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Heya :) excellent idea, would you like to do the honours or leave it to me? I'm happy either way. Someoneanother 12:07, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Oh, lols, there are no separate articles for Avernum/Exile. Anyway, I updated the GF ones. Now I wonder if I am bored enough to play Avernum again and write proper articles, although they didn't get as much coverage as Geneforge did before Vogel merged the GF engine to last Avernums.—  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 12:30, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Well there's certainly enough sources for Avernum 5, likely the same for 6, but I wouldn't fancy trying to dig up sources for the early games either. At least we're at a point where Vogel's future games are all but guaranteed to receive enough coverage. Someoneanother 14:28, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Hehe, are you now playing Geneforge 2? —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 20:38, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm about 90% through the game as a Shaper, which will enable me to get the skinny on the Barzites and the Takers directly from Barzahl. I've just restarted the game as a Guardian, a great deal of the stuff which needs individual cites comes from the early game, I'll also be able to get info from the Awakened (who I've alienated and butchered in my Shaper play-through) and get Zakary to 'fess up from this new game. Ugh, it's really time consuming, I'm writing all these quotes down by hand, and that's after I've found the relevant text to copy. Someoneanother 21:07, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, tell me about it! I've tried this with full-screen, where I needed to printscreen and then manually write down quotes. I thought about doing this for earlier Avernums but the storylines are sometimes so twisted, I get lost in quote and alternative scenario nightmares. By the way, Plot doesn't need to be sourced. I only got Avernum copy on me now, but knowing Vogel, Geneforge directories are the same, so all texts live in Scripts folder. Personally, I've always liked Avernum games better, particularly the first titles. In any case, good luck! —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 21:31, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll bear that in mind, and thanks for your help. Someoneanother 23:05, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Eric Schwarz

The sources you added are all primary or interviews, which are not enough to carry a bio. Also, lots of people get all sorts of buzzwords when they're talked about, so phrases like "an industry legend in the hotseat" are just puffery and nothing more. I still fail to see the notability for Schwarz; no one's covered him significantly, just interviewed him. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 20:34, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

He was interviewed in relation to his work on the Amiga this year, where he is referred to as "Mr. Animation", 13 years after the interview in CU Amiga which states "Eric Schwartz made his name in the late 80s as one of the Amiga's most innovative animators." That isn't just puffery, it's a niche but nonetheless recognized specialism which has caused these video game magazines to seek him out. Per WP:ANYBIO #2 "The person has made a widely recognized contribution that is part of the enduring historical record in his or her specific field." Interviews might not be the ideal sources to base articles on, but sources are not cut to fit WP's purposes, and I believe they suffice for what is a an individual in a niche area. You still haven't added an AFD banner to his article, please rectify that. Someoneanother 20:50, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

First of all, I wanna thank you thousand times for spending your precious time / moments to read my contributing Dream Chronicles pages, which are contributed by my very very humble humble writing skills. :) I'm clearly not a native English speaker and yes, Dream Chronicles is my very first and headline projects on Wikipedia. List of Fictional Cats

Sorry to offend. I have not been contacting the people who made edits to this list given the massive number of editors and the large amount of cruft (not on your part specifically, I have just stopped bothering to even look for them). The edits were made for several reasons. The first is notability. Every item on the list is a work of fiction containing cats, but that does not make the cat itself notable. I was attempting to remove references where the cat in question was not the focus of the game. Admittedly, I have not played all of them, but I attempted to give each entry due diligence. The list is a little different then the List of dragon video games. The standard for inclusion in that article is that the entry is a notable game that prominently feature dragons, whereas for the cat list, I believe that the intention is that the individual cat is notable, independently of its origin.

The second reason for the change was formating. I would prefer if the section conformed to the format in the rest of the list, though I admit this is pure preference on my part.

Of the changes that you have re-instated, I would further remove Shadow Hearts, Wizball, RuneScape, Mouse Trap, Mappy, Breath of fire, Darkstalkers, EverQuest series, and the Final Fantasy games from the table, as well as most of the ones listed below the table. I don't deny that in most cases these are games where cats are an important element, but I just don't think that that is the goal of the list.

Look forward to hearing from you --Djohns21 (talk) 16:34, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry for the delay in response Djohns, I've been busy with work and have managed to pull my back, necessitating some overdue rest and relaxation. What I've been doing with the video game part of the list doesn't resemble the rest of it, and doesn't look like much ATM, so I can see why it looks like more noise to be blocked out. However, what I was trying to do was actually include all the relevant entries in the new table, delete the rest, then spin it out altogether into List of cat video games. Doing so would make it resemble the other video game lists I've been working on (zombies, vampires etc.). It would remove the need for it to 'fit in' with the general cats-in-fiction list since it would not be a part of it any longer.
A lot of the sub-lists could be split off, given their own rationales and exist as separate entities. Until someone is willing to put the time in then I totally agree with trimming the list down as you are doing. A lot of the entries I've moved over to the new table don't look very promising now, but I intend to work on the descriptions as well so that it becomes clear why they're there. Would that be OK? I need the entire feature if possible, as I'm hoping to bolster the development section of the article, as well as other sections like the reception as I have no information on sales. I don't go in for off-wiki email and all that, what I can do is examine the information currently in the article and type-out info that currently isn't there (in my own words) so you can incorporate it at your leisure, along with all the details of the magazine for the citation. It'll take some time (which I'm short of) but I'll get started this evening. Someoneanother 18:00, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the information. It is invaluable and I believe the article is now very close to GAN. I had one question, if you are able to answer it. There is a discrepancy regarding the North American release date. However, the game was featured in the January 1990 issue of Nintendo Power, which, like most magazines, is released the month prior to the issue's date (in this case, December 1989). Some websites like IGN have the game as being released in 1989. You said that the Retro Gamer article states that the game "met the Christmas deadline". So, does that mean that it was released before (or on) December 25, 1989, or that it was ready to be released before or on that date? Is there an infobox in the article anywhere that gives a release date? Thanks again. ~ Hibana (talk) 12:45, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
I'll take a look, I don't know the details but there was a discussion on the project's talk page regarding the reliability of release dates from websites, so it's good to be sure. You're welcome - I'm glad to have been of any help. Someoneanother 16:38, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

I've had a quick clean-up and converted a few sources into cite-web format, ideally all sources of a type (IE web-based, book-based, etc.) should share the same formatting, so would you mind converting those other sources into the same format? I will keep looking for sources and try to help with the article, but I'm going to wait till the game is closer to release - there's much less chance of sources appearing till that point. I think your past contributions are worth discussing. But it's your call. Consider it a standing offer if you become more active. We do four newsletter issues a year. Happy new year. (Guyinblack25 talk 16:06, 3 January 2012 (UTC))

DRV

A notification that the Templates for Discussion discussion (oy, repetition) has been taken to a deletion review discussion. The Article Rescue Squadron was notified, and as notifications to previous involved parties isn't normal practise, I and a few ARS members agreed that, in the interests of transparency and fairness, we should let everyone know...hence this talkpage message ;).

If anyone has an issue with me sending these out, do drop me a note on my talkpage. Regards, Ironholds (talk) 10:27, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

Armored Fist 3

Every game gets "reviewed by IGN, GameSpot and Allgame, [and] several other sources". They aren't all notable. If you think this article shouldn't be deleted, maybe expand it beyond 1 sentence? This whole "fight tooth-and-nail to prevent deletion of any game-related article, regardless of content" is actually extremely harmful to the coverage of game-related topics on wikipedia. 108.67.153.215 (talk) 05:19, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

No, most full-priced retail-released PC and console games released in English get reviewed by them, which is a fraction of the total games released in these days of mobile, browser and indie games. Coverage in multiple non-trivial and reliable sources is all that the notability guideline asks for, so all games with such coverage are notable. Lifting a proposed deletion from a stub with a good source is not fighting tooth and nail for anything, nor is the state of one article harmful to thousands of others. WP is not finished. As far as expanding it, if you've got a problem with the article then do it yourself. Someoneanother 05:39, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

GA nomination

Hi! Can you please review Lure of the Temptress for GA? All the Best, -Khanassassin 21:04, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi there, rather than review it I would strongly urge you to withdraw the nomination and take another look at the article. There is virtually no reception information beyond some review scores, which would be better in a score box to the right of the reception section. I would expect a healthy 2-paragraph review section in most video game articles at GA class.
The other major issue is that the plot section consists of an intro rather than an outline of the game's plot, it ends where the game starts. Both of these sections require expansion and some re-writing to accomodate the new information. I would say the article as it stands is closer to C-class than B, due to the gaps, the GA-process would not be a good place for major work like this to be taking place. I appreciate the work you've put into LotT as well as the Broken Sword articles, and I hope you'll continue with this. If I can be of further assistance please let me know. Someoneanother 21:56, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the respond! Yeah, I thought that article might fail because of those two issues. Thank You for Your compliment on my work! Well, since you offered "assistance", I wondered if you might know someone who has any of these issues of the Amiga/other magazines with the reviews... And, another thing: Do you know anyone who played the game, knows how to write plots really good (You, maybe? :D) All the Best, --Khanassassin 13:14, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
I'm not an adventure gamer, I had a brief fling with Monkey Island and its first sequel and knew someone (years ago) who enjoyed day of the tentacle, but my only real adventuring experience comes from text adventures, which I wasn't any good at anyway :) If you need Amiga magazines for any project then your first port of call should be The Amiga Magazine Rack, the LotT scans are here - just click on a page number that's in yellow (right hand side) to see the scan. Remember to cite the magazine as opposed to the rack itself to prevent copyright issues. Here's a site with some Atari magazines, there's more at Atari Mania. PC mags I'm not sure about, they're more difficult to find, but it might be worth having a google for some. Hope that helps. Someoneanother 13:58, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! You're awesome, Mr. Another! :) --Khanassassin 14:33, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi again, Someone! Thanks again for all the help you provided. I have managed to write the plot section (since the game is only 1 hour and a half long), but...in bad English - So, I thought you'd give it a quick copy-edit? - It is very short, and I'd really appreciate it! I've also added a review score box, and I'll start working on that section too! - I think it'll soon be ready for GA! All the Best, --Khanassassin 16:32, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
It's a great improvement, I've tweaked it a little. I would suggest rewriting the plot section slightly to stick to the main happenings and move away from minor characters and "he said" + "Diermot picks up and maniuplates x y z". The review table is much better, but please add a couple of paragraphs of reception information as well. Please let me know when you'd like me to take another look (not that I'm a particularly good article writer, just that more eyes helps iron the kinks out). Nice work! Someoneanother 00:51, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the tweaks! And, yes, of course I won't leave the Reception section empty. After I'm done with the Plot and Reception sections, I'll give you another "call." Regards, -Khanassassin 13:25, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
I think I'm done with the plot, and I'm getting to the Reception section right now! :) Regards, -Khanassassin 17:22, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
That's looking good, I'll give it a go-over tomorrow, need to lay down before I fall down. Someoneanother 00:18, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
OK, I'm done with the Reception section, and I think it's ready for GA! Just give it a couple of tweaks, and we're good to go! :) Thanks for all your help! Regards, --Khanassassin 10:28, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
It's my pleasure, I've proof-read the article and made some tweaks to the best of my abilities (which isn't saying much, mind). It's a great improvement and expansion, well done. Someoneanother 23:49, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
It's already nominated, so, I thought you could review it, but your contribs are a bit too big (I think). Thanks again for the help! -Khanassassin 13:08, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm probably too involved at this point so it'd best be left to someone else. It's my pleasure. Someoneanother 14:41, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Zombie articles

Hi - You recently participated in a move proposal discussion regarding articles about zombies and zombie pop culture archived at Talk:Zombie. That proposal was not approved, and a new discussion is taking place at Talk:Zombie (fictional) that is narrower in scope, and concerns only whether the older Voodoo and newer Romero zombie pop culture should be included in the same article or whether it should be separated. These are articles that receive a lot of hits, and should probably get more input than just the two editors having the current discussion. I'm flagging all old move discussion participants regarding the new discussion, and your input would be appreciated. LaTeeDa (talk) 21:53, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

GA

Hi! I know You can't review Lure of the Temptress, but could You please review Steve Ince... :) All the very Best, --Khanassassin 12:09, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Khanassassin, sorry but I don't have any experience with biography articles and therefore wouldn't be a good reviewer, plus I've got a handful of things needing attention ASAP as it is. Someoneanother 15:29, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Oh, well... Guess my reviewer search continues... --Khanassassin 18:50, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
