Unable to edit

Can you tell me why I cant edit now after 4 days and 10 edits? I cant edit semi-protect pages, are you or an admin can help out? Is it cause of filter log? Vazgen4 (talk) 20:16, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

I am dreadfully sorry old chap, but it really is not necessary for one to talk like some 17th century yokel in order for one to become a pirate. Captain Kidd, for instance, was very well bred. Pirates today most likely speak with a Somali accent in any case. I suggest the following tasks for International Talk Like A Pirate Day;

1. Check that the water is not over your gunnels
2. Check that your spanker is held aft of your mizzen with appropriate sheets
3. Keel haul the mop who is slowest at these tasks
4. Take a well earned break

I don't personally agree with their deletion myself. They're not harming the project. Well, maybe overloading hte servers a bit actually. I believe that active, highly constructive users, such as User:Midnight Comet, whose page is up for AfD, should be given greater leeway with what's in their userspace. Users who do nothing but userspace edits should not be given this priviledge, I think. Everybody thinks policy is in their favour (although it is shifted slightly towards deletionism), but even Jimbo has subpages that aren't to do with building an encyclopedia. I just don't get involved anymore. But, and I really mean this in the most respectful, unoffensive way possible, you can't use WP:IGNORE for everything, it is supposed to be taken reasonably, it doesn't apply to everything. It says if it "prevents you from improving Wikipedia" ignore it, which really means if it prevents you from what the community considers improvements. I agree with your reasons though, but the majority people who get involved in these discussions are generally against it. And you can't keep saying it's within policy, because everybody will just overwhelm you with the WP:UP. This somewhat contradicts other policys. Or does it. Oh, I don't care. Basically, I would give up. Nobody can tell you not to participate in an AfD (unless you're vandalising) like on your userpage, tho. Well, they could ask you to if you say the same reason which is continually proved wrong. That whole paragraph I wrote probably was a bit rambling, maybe didn't make sense. Sorry. WP:RFD? Redirects for discussion. Anyway, you really shouldn't hold too much of a grudge, a lot of editors share his opinion too. Don't take this the wrong way, but in an RfA (if that's what you mean), you can't just say "I don't like this guy" or "he AfDs hidden pages", because the majority have agreed with him if it has been deleted. In a RfA you take into account all of the users contributions, and ecide whether he could responsibly use the admin tools, not just cite some deletions you didn't agree with. It probably won't affect the community's decision. It's not like I support him in his deletions, it just...you know. I'm beginning to sound like some sort of self-righteous beurocratic idiot lately, aren't I, disagreeing with you. Sorry. I feel really bad, honestly I do. Don't hate me. New Section

Well on a relavant note I got a question. I want to make a ton of edits to something that needs them so is there anything that any of you can think of that needs some fixing up that you also belive I will be willing to work on?--Coldplay Expert 18:22, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

I ask myself that every day. I am always stuck on what to edit. Well, do you prefer to do article writing, or cleaning-upping or vandalism fighting.

Article writing. Hmmmm. I'm not that experienced there, believe it or not. I very rarely create new articles, but if I see a stub with potential, I'll expand it if possible.

WP:Cleanup has some cateogries with articles needing work.

And if you want to fight vandalism, the old-fashioned way is to take a look at Recent changes and look for suspicious looking edits. Might want to click the "hide logged-in users" option. If you get rollback rights, you'll find this much easier.

There are numerous AfDs to participate in. But I understand that's not your thing...

Could do some random page patrolling.

A last resort would be to search for "passed away" and, wherever you find it, change it to "died", per WP:EUPHEMISM. You'll often find a few bad articles in need of fixing in the process. The only problem with fighting vandals is that it takes forever for me to do it because I dont use TW or HG and I dont have rollback either. The [rollback VANDAL] is actually what comes with Twinkle, what it does is revert the edit and warn the vandal. Nearly any "old" user can use Twinkle. Rollback on the other hand just gives you [rollback], which reverts the vandal (faster than twinkle) but does not warn. Not exactly, I think you're thinking of Huggle, which is a download (but requires rollback). Twinkle is just a fast, one click way to tag for issues or warn vandals, it doesn't avtually find the vandalism. By the way, you don't need to apply for Twinkle. You just go to "gadgets" in my preferences and check the box. You do need to have a specific browser, like Firefox, Google Chrome, or Opera, I think. Well, the only way right now is to check out the recent changes (ask me if you don't know where that is. In fact here's a link Recent Changes) and look for suspicious looking edits. Then undo them. May want to click "hide edits by logged in users", as most unconstructive edits are by IPs. Just keep clicking the "special" tab at the top to refresh the page. There are sometimes tags with "repeating characters" or "page blanking". These help, but normally somebody else beats you to them. It all becomes easier with Rollback, but you've really got to prove that you can handle the tools responsibly. Anyway, I was looking over recent changes, and an IP edit by 72.224.167.166 (talk · contribs) who insists that Michelle Philips' birth date is in fact 1937, whilst the two references seem to think otherwise. Hm. I reverted the edit, but I was reverted by the IP within minutes. Not wanting to get blocked for the 3RR, and having alomost no experience in this area, I came to ask you. P.S - There also seems to be an ongoing edit war about this very trivial issue (check the article's history). Well thanks and no-thanks (even if this expression could only conventionally apply when the addressed party has been unable to provide the help requested). The relevant policy here is WP:BLP which says: "Material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, or just questionable—should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion". This policy trumps 3RR, and just about anything else, so keep on reverting it unless a source is found. In the case of birth dates or ages being reverted you also need to consider the possibility that it is the subject themself doing the reverting - actresses often don't like people knowing their real ages. For someone relatively obscure we might just delete the birthdate altogether as a courtesy, but otherwise use the "official" (ie sourced) date. I don't think that it is Michelle in this case as the edits are making her older, not younger. I have given the IP a 3RR warning and will block it if it carries on. By the way, you linked to the wrong article on my page, Michelle Philips is not the same person as Michelle Phillips, had me confused for a while. SpinningSpark 17:41, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

In my experience, people editing their own articles usually say who they are. I would have came to the same conclusion, but I was reading WP:Edit war, which has a very slightly different thing ("Libelous, biased, unsourced, or poorly sourced controversial material which violates the policy on biographies of living persons (BLP)"), that I misinterprited (never took notice of the "which violates BLP").
