Welcome to Wikipedia!

[edit]

Hello Streamless, welcome to Wikipedia!

Here are some tips:

If you feel a change is needed, feel free to make it yourself! Wikipedia is a wiki, so anyone (yourself included) can edit any article by following the Edit this page link. Wikipedia convention is to be bold and not be afraid of making mistakes. If you're not sure how editing works, have a look at How to edit a page, or try out the Sandbox to test your editing skills.

If, for some reason, you are unable to fix a problem yourself, feel free to ask someone else to do it. Wikipedia has a vibrant community of contributors who have a wide range of skills and specialties, and many of them would be glad to help. As well as the wiki community pages there are IRC Channels, where you are more than welcome to ask for assistance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. Thanks and happy editing, Alphax τεχ 14:02, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Golden Gate Bridge (your vandal reversion)

[edit]

Greetings, and thanks for correcting the vandal, however you inadvertently left in an external link (structurae) which had been rerouted to giantpenis.com. The best way to treat vandalism is to go to the preceding legitimate edit and use that to overlay the current.

What was really strange to me was that the vandalism "stuck" from your edit of 2 Feb through several vandal reversions until corrected 7 Feb by an IP anon edit. (I was checking that edit). There is an easy way to revert quickly, by the way.

How to revert a page:

First, check the history. You can view complete pages by clicking on the date. (Note that the page and the talk page have separate histories). To view a complete page at a point in time click on the date. To detect what was changed, select the left side radiobuttons and then use the button Compare selected versions.

Case 1: Revert a vandalized page. Select valid version's date. When the page comes up, select edit this page at the top. You will see a warning that you are editing an out-of-date version. Use the Save page button at the bottom. OK through any additional out of date warnings to save this original version.

Case 2: Revert to an earlier version which was edited legitimately after the vandalism. Apply Case 1, then compare the immediately preceding version with the one you just restored. This will show the paragraphs to be restored. Open both the new and the preceding versions for edit and copy and paste the changed paragraphs.

Beware: Someone with intent to delete paragraphs with intent to obscure facts of the article may bury a deletion within a series of legitimate edits - I saw this in Oil refinery, with six or seven edits covering the anon deletion of an entire paragraph (environmental concerns) that was not favorable to the industry - probably some marketing VP at an oil company.

You may want to put on your watchlist articles that you are familiar with. Also, checking the edit "diff" for the last edit is not enough as it may appear OK, with vandalism preceding. Always use the history. Also note that a vandal can register and vandalize with other than an IP address, so it is a good idea to check.

I stopped chasing vandals in real time and am reducing my watchlist. Now, I just cycle through specific articles and checking between my previous edit and the current state. Mark the article with some trivial edit for your next time through. So I might not review an article for a long while but keep up with changes.

Best wishes, Leonard. - Leonard G. 01:35, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My poll

[edit]

...is completely pointless, really. Except that I suspect that there's a greater number of computer geeks (and, by association, a greater number of Wikipedians) who enjoy Rush than the average social group. So I'm testing my theory, in a completely unscientific way.  ;) · Katefan0(scribble)/poll 02:13, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of songs in triple meter (1990-1999)

[edit]
  • It keeps getting removed because there is a faction of wiipedians who hate lists on principle, and they hate them even more when it's about a topic that they don't know much about or don't care about. So there you have it. If you are fond of any other lists, keep an eye on them because they are nominated for afd all the time. I have an old version of the page if you would like it. --Hraefen 18:45, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • That's one interpretation. Another is that there was a clear consensus to delete it (and the related triple metre lists) for reasons including, but not limited to, the fact that many of the entries are unverifiable (not published as sheet music) or wrong (12/8 is not triple metre, it's compound duple). Speaking as the original contributor of triple metre I think you'd have a hard time justifying your assertion that I don't care about the subject. If you have an old version of the page you may be violating GFDL. Just zis Guy you know? 10:57, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Right, thanks for reminding me. Another, probably the main, reason that the page has been deleted is that Just zis Guy you know? is spiteful and confrontational (as his posting here bears out) and he somehow became an admin. If you try enought times to get "a clear consensus to delete it" then one of those times you will. As far as you being the original contributor of triple metre: the content there only goes to show how outdated your knowledge of triple meter is. If someone was reading that page, (especially since the modern lists of examples are now no more) they would assume that triple meter died with The Beatles. But hey, at least you are familiar with all the examples there. So, I can honestly say that you don't care about the topic (triple meter in the 1990s and 2000s). Well, gotta go now... the CIA, NSA, FBI, ATF and the Secret Service are here to take my old version of the page that may be violating GFDL. --Hraefen 18:38, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of American Footballers Playing Abroad

[edit]

Sorry for getting back to you so late on this! I gotta say, though, I think of myself more as a maintainer than a creator. I'm happy to keep pages up to date, but actually starting something from scratch seems... I dunno, daunting to me. But if you or someone else made the list, I'd be more than happy to keep it updated. Sorry I'm so lazy. :) It's a good idea though. --Loudsox 21:01, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If and when you do create such a list (good luck at the AfD that would arrive!) you might find these categories helpful: {{cat:American football players by nationality}} & {{cat:Category:NFL Europa players}} Mathmo Talk 16:40, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

interested in the Portuguese-speaking world

[edit]

Hi. I'm Beth, known on Wikipedia as Learnportuguese. I am very interested in the Portuguese language and the Portuguese-speaking world. The whole concept of saudade is fascinating. If you want, chek out my user page and talk page and put a watch on both. I have very interesting discussions there. You are very welcome to contribute. :-) learnportuguese (talk) 16:22, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Michel Abreu

[edit]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Michel Abreu, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Michel Abreu seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Michel Abreu, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself.
