Notice

The article Martin Fitzpatrick has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Delete per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Margaret J. Schneider/WP:USCJN

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Mike Sfraga

You created this as a redirect. His nomination is in consideration. At what point do you believe an article should be created for Wikipedia? I would imagine his academic work and US Senate confirmed appointment to the US Arctic Research Commission would meet GNG, but I assume there is a reason you opted for a redirect when creating. I'm generally inclined not to create articles when someone is GNG ambiguous. Mpen320 (talk) 23:21, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi there! I saw the press in February about his nomination and was about to start an article, but I didn't uncover significant coverage beyond the initial nomination. Upon further review, there is some 2021 coverage [1] in addition to the more recent articles [2]. If you find significant coverage from anything besides his nomination, that would likely demonstrate he meets GNG. On a related note, I started a Wikidata item ID: Q120135404. In the revision notes, you wrote, "H-index of 27." What's an H-index? My first inclination is to move this article forward to AfD, but not if there's something viable here. Just Another Cringy Username (talk) 17:13, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Hello! That was a reference to citation metrics. H-index is a measure of how highly cited and potentially impactful a researcher's work is. It is one way an academic could meet WP:PROF. In my experience, biology is a highly cited field, so an H-index of 27 is somewhat average, but it's possible that some of his research was done before widespread use of internet and may not be captured by the Scopus database that I used to see Barlough's H-index. I would not object to an AfD. I just thought there was just enough substance, that a wider discussion (AfD) might be warranted. Respectfully, TJMSmith (talk) 17:56, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Rabbi Fass article for consideration

Hi TJMSmith, I work for Nefesh B'Nefesh, the organization founded by Rabbi Yehoshua Fass. I noticed that you were involved in this discussion in 2021 when an attempt was made to create an article for him. I recently reworked a draft for an article for Rabbi Fass, demonstrating his notability independent of the organization. I would appreciate you taking a look and moving this version to mainspace if appropriate. Thank you! LA for NBN (talk) 13:01, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

Women in Red 8th Anniversary
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Wiknic location

Hi TJMSmith! Looking forward to hopefully seeing you at Sunday's wiknic. At Wikipedia_talk:Meetup/DC/Wiknic_2023#Different_location_for_the_wiknic? I raised a question about location — I'll copy it here for convenience but if you could answer at that talk page that'd be really helpful. Thank you!

Apologies for the late suggestion: How would folks feel about doing the wiknic at Dupont Circle instead of at Rock Creek Park? Dupont would be easier to get to for folks on the train. I originally chose Rock Creek Park because I was worried about the crowd getting too big (last time I hosted a CentralNotice'd event hundreds wanted to come!), but it looks like there have only been a small handful of signups, which makes Dupont plausible! I'll notify everyone who's expressed interest — please let me know if you have a preference one way or the other. Looking forward to seeing you all!

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello TJMSmith,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.
