How to discuss my Tamarack page, and what is expected for references

Hi, Theonesean. I was disappointed to see that the page I assembled on Tamarack (Band) has been rejected. I've pulled together numerous web sources, and am unaware of any print resources other than the CDs themselves, of which I have only one.

Is this the best forum to discuss these issues, or is there a better one? The page itself does not seem to have a [talk] tab (it seems that the draft is the talk tab).

What would you suggest to bring the references up to expectations? I felt they were quite sufficient, and I've included both citations and external links to public sources about Tamarack.

I can do that. I've found out how to multi-refer to a source now, so can make use of that. It's actually a bit tricky as I have not found a single source with the full discography (James Gordon omits those from after he left the group, and the current Tamarack one leaves out the early albums).

Thanks/further clarification needed

Dear Theonesean, Thank you for taking the time to review my article. I really do appreciate it.

To do my best to remain objective and stick to the facts, I have basically re-written what others have said, and referenced it all: these are not my personal opinions. In fact, Seabrook Wilkinson's article is titled "Disciplined Craftsmanship: Lee Letts, the Sculptor, Painter, and Designer" --so 'disciplined' is not my word but it IS at the core of this artist's method, and product.

If a child is so captivated by the birds in the woods by his home that he sets traps to catch them for observation, I believe 'captivated' to be an appropriate word. If I were to remove 'profound effect' I would have to say 'strong influence' which then becomes overused and not as elegant wording.

May I appeal your decision?

Marion, thanks for contacting me. I'm always willing to help someone who is interested. I'll address your message point by point. "disciplined": Per WP:PEACOCK, you cannot contend something directly. Feel free to say something like "Seabrook Wilkinson went so far as to title his article "Disciplined Craftsmanship" as a recognization of his dedication. For your second point, yes, I agree. However, captivated could be construed as puffery. Find a published source of someone calling him captivated or something of that ilk, and quote it. Opinion can only be expressed as such. Thirdly, don't try to be lyric. Yes, I agree, it sounds elegant. If I had a choice, I would leave it. But it's not "just the facts." Thanks, and feel free to reply. clarification on a rejection, please

Hello Theonesian, I just read your reasons for declining my submission (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Sue_draheim) and I'm puzzled. You give 4 reasons: (1) "does not appear to be in the formal tone . . ." Pursuing the link to that comment I see that I've followed WP guidelines, i.e. I used a style used by reliable sources (more on this later), I did not employ "unintelligible argot, slang, colloquialisms, doublespeak, legalese, or jargon" ; I did not use the first or second person, and I used the language in what I consider to be a " businesslike manner" (2) "Entries should be written from a neutral point of view" Pursuing the link to that comment , I see that I've followed the WP guidelines, i.e. I represented "fairly, proportionately, and as far as possible without bias, all significant views that have been published by reliable sources" (more on the reliable sources in a moment) (3) "...should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources". Outside of one reference to her home page and another to the home page of a group she was in, all the other are from "independent, reliable, published sources" --- 8 of them from books in print by authors not associated with her, and of those eight, six are from what I'd consider to be reliable academic presses ( 2 of them from Oxford University Press, and that's pretty reliable). Six other references are internet references that are not associated with her; that they're on the internet would be considered "published", but I admit the issue of reliability is a little trickier with web pages than it is with books. Outside of the nearly 40 other references which are merely helpful links to full album data from web sources most of which are reliable enough to be mentioned by WP, I'm counting a total of 14 sources which (in my opinion anyway) fulfill the wikipedia criteria --- they are published (and links to google books vouch for their existence), they are independent, and they are reliable. I'd appreciate it if you'd point out which sources do not meet the criteria of independence, reliability, and proof of publication. (4) "Please make sure to avoid peacock terms". I was a little stumped at first by your reference to "peacock terms", but then I found that I had called Sue "well known" in the first paragraph, and I'd referred to her "important contributions" in the last paragraph, and I'd also included a comment about her being among the "crème de la crème of the English folk-rock scene", but this was just a quote from an in-print book by Austrian music journalist Richard Schuberth (who is "notable" enough to have warranted at least a German WP page: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Schuberth). I see also from your link on "peacock terms" that it in fact does appear be in accordance with WP guidelines to quote such a comment.

So you can see why I'm puzzled. Please help me out here and let me know where my language lapses into informality, where I have expressed anything other than plain statements of fact, where my references are unreliable, unpublished, or non-independent, and where (besides the "well known" and "important contributions") I've committed peacockery.

The template on that submission is a little misleading. I rejected it because of WP:NPOV. First of all, there is a lot of unsourced material. I try to keep it to at least one citation per paragraph. Also, language like "explored and became accomplished", "a favorite of Sue's", "while she preferred the 'fiddle'" do not lend themselves to formality or neutrality. Overall, the article is good. Hello Theonesean, Sorry I misspelled your name first time around --- I think I had in mind at first that your name was some kind neologistic pseudo-Greek type name like Theodosius or Theophilus --- I realized only later that it was The-one-sean. Yes, I agree that the template is a little misleading. Because of that I appreciate you addressing the problems in the article in a non-template form. As for the unsourced material you mentioned, I've found 6 sentences which are unsourced, to wit:

(1) "Growing up on North Oakland's Fairview Street (two blocks from the Berkeley border), she attended Peralta Elementary School (where she began the violin in third grade), Claremont Jr. High, and Oakland Technical High School."

  • "Oakland" and "1949" are referenced for birth year and place; I agree that I'll have to document month and day. As for "growing up on Fairview St", and the schools she attended, I admit there are no references --- they may be hard to document. As for starting violin in the 3rd grade, Sue's short bio in the referenced album notes to Berkeley Farms indicates she started when she was eight years old, which is a pretty normal third grade age, but I can live with "eight years old" instead of "third grade" . . . I happen to be her brother (and thought be fairly reliable by many ;-)) and will swear to those facts on a stack of any holy book of your choosing, but I realize that probably doesn't meet WP standards for referencing . . .

(2) "Sue explored and became accomplished in many other genres, including North Indian (which she studied at the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music), Norwegian (using the 8 string Hardanger fiddle." *What other genres Sue "explored" may actually be partially documentable. A week ago I wrote to the Ali Akbar Khan College of music and received a reply from them indicating they did indeed have old records and would find out the exact dates of her attendance and posssibly even a list of her classes. Still waiting for a reply. If I get one, is it permissible to quote from an email as a reference? (Probably not, even though these days folks get criminal charges brought against them on the basis of email evidence). As for the Hardanger fiddle exploration, I can offer only brotherly knowledge, as she never (as far as I know) used a Hardanger for any of her recordings; so that will definitely have to go. Sue's having become "accomplished" at least in Cajun, Zydeco, British folk-rock, bluegrass, old time country, etc, I would think are evidenced in her highly referenced discography. Having become "accomplished" in North Indian style or Hardanger fiddle is definitely unsupportable and that part, I agree, will have to go.

(3) "From late 1970 to early 1977 Sue lived in England..." * I cannot prove that she lived in England from 1970, but the referenced fact of her 1972 BBC recording, together with the evidence gleaned from her referenced discography that she was recording in England from 1972 through 1977 would lead one to surmise a stay in England for those 5 years. Unless one were to assume a series of transatlantic commutes, would that not be enough to vouch for a stay from 1972 to 1977? (and maybe I could add something like "She is also rumored to have actually been in England for two years before that" ??). Also ---- I just thought of this --- in the short bio she wrote in 1970 to accompany the (referenced) BERKELEY FARMS album liner notes, she mentions "I'm leaving for Ireland and points West, in June. I have a one-way ticket, but will most likely return to Berkeley after a while." Shaky, I know, and doesn't specifically prove that she stayed in the British Isles from 1970 to 1972, but wouldn't that be a strong enough indication, coupled with the referenced recording information?

(4) "In late 1977 Sue returned to Oakland." *Agreed - outside of somehow tracking down public access immigration or passport information, I cannot support a 1977 return to the US. Again, I've only got (referenced) discography information that shows her recording in the US from 1978 to 2011. I guess I have to just find someone other than me who is not associated with her who said so either in print or on the internet . . .

(5) "In her later years Sue settled in Berea, Kentucky with her partner Wayde Blair." *Actually, I think this can be supportable. Just yesterday her obituary appeared (in print and on the net) and mentions "In 2011, she moved to Kentucky with her life-partner, Wayde Blair..." Would that be enough? (6) "... performed there many times over the years from the beginnings of her career..." (in reference to Freight & Salvage) *As for frequency of appearances at the Freight, I agree: her reunion concert with Any Old Time is already referenced, her liner notes bio (for BERKELEY FARMS) mentions playing there, but I do need to find someone in print or on the net who can back up my representation of "many times over the years" . . .

No problem there. I rather like pseudo-Greek names, but I'm not that witty. Just something I came up with years ago, and it stuck. But on to the main part of your exhaustive (that's a good thing) list.
  1. Yeah, even though you are her brother, no original research is allowed. But the age thing is fine - you could point an internal link to the average age of schoolchildren in specific grades, if one exists.
  2. I think an email may qualify. Check that out. If not, see if they could give you a web page or something more public.
  3. It's a little shaky, but I think you should be able to get away with it. Don't sweat that too much.
  4. Try public databases for immigration, or, if you have her passport/immigration papers, those are legitimate sources too,
  5. Yes.
  6. Perhaps just rephrase that and be more specific as to which years. That should do it.

That template is a little misleading. It's not that your sources are unreliable, it's that large parts of your article (Personal Life for one) are unsourced. See WP:MINREF for guides for that. Thanks, TheOneSean | Talk to me 00:56, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

When you said "neologism," I did a double take. I wanted to decline it for inadequate citations. Large swaths of the article are unsourced, and more than half of the refs are for names, not the actual content of the article. Either I wasn't paying attention, or the AFCH script screwed up. You could cite it as an interview. Research MLA or APA (whichever you prefer) format for citing interviews. It's probably a weak source, and may be challenged under Wikipedia:No original research, but it should work for your purposes. Be prepared to back it up, even tangentially, with other sources. Woodpecker Wooliams

Hello; you've recently declined an article submission for not having reliable sources- the key sources (and references) are from the BBC, The Guardian newspaper and The Independent newspaper, with major festival websites and blogs as back-up resources. I'm not sure how to improve upon those as I'd thought they were independent and relevant? Any further advice on what more you might like to see would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, DC.

That template was perhaps a little misleading. The sources you have are reliable, it's just large swaths of your article are unsourced, such as "Woodpecker Wooliams is the musical project of Brighton-based Gemma Williams (23 October 1983).", and the sections, "Current Live Band," "Previous Live Contributers," and the discography. Thank you that you look after the page of Sep Ruf and for your good advice. You might see that english ist not my native language so I hope I did it well. This is my first article I wrote for myself. Before I was writing on a lot of articles that were already created by somebody else. I thought it would be better to unse this way, because my english was not good enough to understand all the things that I should have cared for by writing an article directly.

Sep Ruf has two further pages in German and in Italiano so you can see how they are created. The english article is not connected with this pages until yet.

AfC of Vashishtha Narayan Singh

Hi Theonesean... I noticed that you recently declined AfC of Vashishtha Narayan Singh. While the decision is fine with me, the rationale you gave is not correct acc to me. The cited newspaper (The Times of India) is used regularly for various Indian articles. Plus the other references are to the California Univ website and Math Genealogy project and those are the primary sources for 1 or two facts in the article.--Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 06:22, 17 May 2013 (UTC) plus I hope you did not look at the older version. My issue is not with the reliability of the sources, but with the large patches of unsourced material, some that is potentially libelous, for example, "his wife left him due to schizophrenia in 1976." If sources are added for that material, the article is sourced adequately. If that material is removed, the article is sourced adequately. If not, than no. That is also taken from news report only. What I did not do was inline citation, I thought to avoid overdoing inline citation. Check now, I have cited everything inline. I know that article was in very bad shape originally with lot of big claims and unsourced text. I just stumbled across while checking AfC backlog (thinking if I could review some of the articles). On another note, I was under the impression that in AfC the reviewing editor check all the citations and verify all the information presented in the article. I was doing NewPagePatrol and Stiki stuff since a couple of months and was now thinking to pitch in AfC.--Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 00:57, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Doesn't actually have to be re-reviewed. I left it in mainspace because he's notable. If someone finds that the rest is copyvio, they will delete the entire article. But it certainly could use further work and referencing, so please do go there and help. Just please remember that a key step in reviewing is to check for copyvio. when it looks like a press release, it is generally simply copied from one. If a likely source is given , as is usual, check it; if one is not given, then it almost certainly is copyvio, and it's worth checking first Google, and then the organization's web site, including likely sub-pages. Hi Theonesean, I am seeking some information in order to get my article accepted. In your refusal to approve my page you listed "This submission's references do not adequately evidence the subject's notability." I searched "the guidelines on the notability of music-related topics" and found that Dan Haerle meets several of the Criteria for Musicians and Ensembles, such as: 1. Has been the subject of multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable 4. Has received non-trivial coverage in independent reliable sources of an international concert tour, or a national concert tour in at least one sovereign country 5. Has released two or more albums on a major record label or on one of the more important indie labels 7. Has become one of the most prominent representatives of a notable style or the most prominent of the local scene of a city; 8. Has won or been nominated for a major music award 10. Has performed music for a work of media that is notable, e.g., a theme for a network television show, performance in a television show or notable film, inclusion on a notable compilation album, etc

Criteria For Composers and Lyricists 3. Has had a work used as the basis for a later composition by a songwriter, composer or lyricist 5. Has been listed as a major influence or teacher of a composer, songwriter or lyricist 6. Appears at reasonable length in standard reference books on his or her genre of music.

Others 1. Is cited in reliable sources as being influential in style, technique, repertory or teaching in a particular music genre. 2. In addition, I have listed references throughout my article which I feel are reliable sources of information.

My questions: 1. Is any part of my article acceptable? 2. What can I do to change the article so that it will be accepted?

Mike, thanks for your comment. When I used that template, I wasn't saying that he wasn't notable. I was just saying your sources didn't support a large amount of your article. You only have four sources, only one of which is an independent publication. He definitely is notable. Just find more sources. AfC: Catholic Scholars etc.

I am writing about my submission regarding the 'Catholic Scholars' Declaration on Authority in the Church'. It is an important event world wide since 204 prominent Catholic academics are publicly making proposals that would make a real difference to how the Catholic Church would function in its daily operations.

It is the largest academic statement on church authority to date.

1. I really do not understand your assessment that it cannot be independently verified. I have given references from magazine and newspaper reports as well as from well-known international newsblogs.

Anyone can check them out!

So what else would I need to do? I am really somewhat exasperated!

There are thousands of assertions on Wikipedia which are less substantially verified than the Catholic Scholars' Declaration.

2. Moreover, the internet is a new reality in our world. Publications on the internet are replacing to a great extent the traditional publishing in print.

Wikipedia itself is an example of this. It is replacing the Encyclopedia Britannica and other printed sources of the past.

So why being so hostile to websites that are inherently reliable? The Declaration on www.churchauthority.org has been endorsed by 204 scholars from all over the world. That is more than any endorsement received by a Wikipedia article.

Elsa, this article has a rash of problems. I simply chose one of them to address. I'm not disputing the notability. Probably, it is notable. However, that is not established in the article, or more importantly, in the opening section. Also, the first section header being partially capitalized grates on my eyes every time I see it. Also, your ideological statements on the internet etc. are not in dispute. However, print sources or newspapers are preferable to blogs. Most of your sources are primary, which is not bad in and of itself, but it leads to some notability issues. And finally, the entire first two paragraphs of the "Academic Signatories" section have ONE CITATION. The list of signatories has NO CITATIONS. Your article is undercited, and what citations you do have are weak. Also, the writing style is highly promotional. Phrases like "bring about a revolution in church practice" and "an imbalance in the exercise of authority" do not lend themselves to neutrality. Please improve this article. I just edited out all the info with less than reliable sources from the Paul Harris page. I think all the remaining info is cited with reliable sources, but if I'm mistaken, I'd love a little more insight into what type of sources I need to get this approved. Looking at similar articles for other notable DJs and Producers, it seems I'm using all the sames sources (Discogs.com, AllMusic.com and Grammy.com).
