{{helpme}} Could someone help me sort out the image in the infobox of the above article? Not sure hat I'm doing wrong but it's driving me bonkers. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 11:14, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

For a pic in an infobox, you don't need all the code. Just;
| image = DANROWING2.jpg
|caption=Dan Byles in the Atlantic 1997
Fixed, cheers,  Chzz  ►  11:22, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
You're welcome. And, I should have said - for help with a template like that...put TEMPLATE:name of template into the Wikipedia search box. If you are lucky, it'll have a decent documentation page, with examples - like template:infobox person.
If you ever need quick help, or just to say 'hello', maybe try this or this. Best,  Chzz  ►  11:46, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Is it my browser, your edit has again messed up the citation? I can see a big gap at the end of the date. Off2riorob (talk) 20:51, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

Not sure what's happened, seems to be ok on mine, but apologies anyway. It could be your browser as I did use the correct parameters. I also changed the date to UK format. TheRetroGuy (talk) 20:55, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for tidying the article up by the way, I can get a bot over enthusiastic when adding detail. TheRetroGuy (talk) 20:57, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

cropped images

Hi Retro, I much prefer when an image is cropped to the subject, do you mind if I repace the cropped pic and correct the caption.. Imo and mos this is much more correct as the pic gives undue weight to the other person in the picture, I also removee and crop a fair few of these similar situations. Off2riorob (talk) 11:53, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

No problems. Go for it. TheRetroGuy (talk) 11:56, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

Andrew Peach - AGAIN

Could you please request protection for Andrew Peach, as the edit war is about to begin once agian. As we've discussed before, Peach is only freelance, and hasn't been heard on Radio 2 for quite sometime. Once again, the IP address appears to be that of the BBC, which means there is only one person changing the information!

Request made though it is up to an admin to protect the page, and as I have said previously, I'm not an admin. Regardless of whether or not this page is protected, stop edit warring on this article over such a trivial matter. TheRetroGuy (talk) 09:33, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

This has been an issue before, as you know. The page needs to be protected as it is goving false information. I have re-worded it a little by referring to him as a "relief" newsreader. This is fair, I think? FreeSpirit10 (talk) 11:15, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

I've posted a request at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. For future reference they're the people to ask rather than me, although I wouldn'd advise anyone involved in the edit dispute to post a request there. TheRetroGuy (talk) 11:19, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

RNC related articles

Hi RetroGuy. Thanks for your work on the articles related to RNC, and for finding the image of Rowton Castle. I must admit it hadn't occurred to me to search for a Rowton Castle picture but it adds a little more interest and detail to the page. I think you're right about Hereford Teacher Training College and Hereford College of Education being one and the same. I imagine it probably would have been known under both names. At school I had a teacher who studied there, probably one of the last to do so I think, and he always referred to it as the teacher training college at Hereford. Paul Largo (talk) 18:51, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome. I should have known this because I had an aunt who studied her teaching qualification there in the late 60s. She probably told me the name of the college when I was a lad, but I've forgotten it now, and I haven't seen her for years. TheRetroGuy (talk) 12:28, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 20:29, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

UK Shadow Cabinets

{{helpme}}

Hi. I've recently added a new article, Shadow Cabinet of Nick Clegg to the {{UK Shadow Cabinets}} template, but I can't seem to find the correct colour code so it's appearing blue instead of yellow. Could someone help me sort it out please? I'll be logging off shortly because I've got to nip out for a few hours so won't be able to respond until this evening. If you can help in the meantime, however, that would be great. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 13:07, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Done here, using this (and a developers' calculator!) for the RGB colour code. TFOWR 13:13, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
Cheers. Thanks for getting back so quickly. Looks pretty complicated. :) Thanks for helping. TheRetroGuy (talk) 13:15, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
You could more easily access it through the template Template:Liberal Democrats/meta/color. Claritas § 14:52, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for that. Seems like an easier way to find it. I notice someone's taken the Clegg entry out again because it was out of sequence. I think there should be a place for Lib Dem Shadow Cabinets as there have been a few now. I'm planning to create articles on the others, so might end up either creating a separate Lib Dem Shadow Cabinets template or suggesting a separate section for the existing one. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 20:37, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Shadow Cabinet of Vince Cable

It looks like new Vince Cable list is identical to Campbell's except for Cable and Campbell themselves (I admit I got bored 40% of the way through). If it is, wouldn't it best to just redirect to the Campbell page and add a note (probably in the lead) that when Campbell resigned, Cable retained his shadow cabinet? -Rrius (talk) 21:29, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

I've no objections if you want to merge them. I wasn't really sure whether or not to create it, but thought I'd go for it. If the Vince Cable cabinet can be covered with a brief note in the Campbell article then that would be work, I think. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 21:36, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
Have now suggested the merge and opened a discussion on the Campbell Shadow Cabinet talk page. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 13:08, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:Capri Sun Apple 1.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Capri Sun Apple 1.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. {{helpme}}

Could somebody help me sort out the fair use rationale for the file File:Capri Sun Apple 1.jpg? I'm guessing the branding is owned by the company itself, but I took the picture of the carton on my mobile phone about 18 months ago? I've always been a bit unsure of the use of images (it's a bit of a minefield) so don't tend to upload them these days unless I'm pretty sure about what I'm doing. Have just logged on to check messages, etc, and am offline for a while now, but will be back in a couple of hours or so. It would be great if someone could help anyway. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 09:25, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

The problem is, currently, the image is not used on any articles. We can only use Non-free content when it is used on at least one live article. Any "fair-use rationale" must refer to a specific article. If you do intend to use the image on an article, please could you explain and use a further {{helpme}} here, thanks. Chzz  ►  09:38, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

{{helpme}}

Thanks for responding. I uploaded the image some time back and added it to the Capri Sun article. Everything appears to have been ok since then until recently. The bot message seems to have been generated because someone deleted much of the article on 14 June. I have now reverted to a previous version. I would be grateful though if someone could just give the file the once over to check that I did upload it correctly. Thanks. TheRetroGuy (talk) 11:17, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

OK, thanks. The information was there, but not really in the right order, so I have tidied things up. It now has an appropriate rationale, etc. As to whether that material is appropriate for the article...I have doubts; it is unreferenced, the list of "Flavours" probably fails WP:NOTDIR, and adding the second image means the text is 'squashed' between two images (which is against style guidelines) - but that is a separate issue.
The fair-use rationale now in place is appropriate and sufficient, as long as the picture remains in use on the live article. Best,  Chzz  ►  11:33, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Cheers again and thanks for sorting it out. I might take a look at reorganising the article a little when I get the chance. Perhaps the file can become part of a gallery at the bottom of the article. TheRetroGuy (talk) 11:36, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Have used information to update File: Capri-Sun 1.jpg which I'd also got muddled up a bit. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 11:44, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Wikibreak

Hi RetroGuy. I'm wondering if you might be able to do me a favour. Because of personal circumstances I'm finding I don't have a lot of time to edit Wikipedia so I'm taking an indefinite Wikibreak. I know you've done some significant editing to the article Royal National College for the Blind and wanted to ask if you would mind submitting it for FAC for me. I had planned to do this myself, but wouldn't have the time to give it my full attention. Also could you finish my overhaul of the Cheryl Cole article. I thought of you because I sort of know you vaguely in the real world and I'm sure you will appreciate my situation. Let me know if you can help. Thanks Paul Largo (talk) 11:29, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Richard Miniter entry

I notice that you keep putting up a link to Miniter's alleged mistreatment of a female companion. Yes, you have a link. But it is an allegation (a claim) not a finding by a court. Indeed, from the link, it seems the trial is ongoing. Isn't it premature to post something that is potentially libelous, slanderous or damaging until the court has ruled? Innocent till proven guilty, right? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.48.112.57 (talk) 13:28, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

RE: 1977 in TV

I mainly have the view that references should only be allowed in extreme cases, I recommend such refs in the disambiguation list are put in their respective articles. I am only clearing out a backlog of articles with missing references lists.Yousou (talk) 19:11, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

It's no longer in the backlog I was clearing out so everything is alright by my terms. I just looked at the references and I did not really believe TV-ARK is a good reference. (I know the site is good but still not a good reference) and I thought the Inside TV ref was a minor internet article. Still, I do not really care, as long as its not in the Missing reference list backlog, everything is fine. Yousou (talk) 19:21, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm completely lost now. :) TheRetroGuy (talk) 19:25, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Recreate page

Discussion copied from Talk:Milk snatcher and archived here.

I would like to recreate this page as a redirect to Margaret Thatcher (more specifically, Margaret Thatcher#Education Secretary (1970–1974)) where this is mentioned). It was recently deleted as an attack page, although the title is a well known nickname for the former British Prime Minister and stems from an incident which happened when she was Education Secretary during the early 1970s (see this article for example which is what brought me to search for the term). Keeping the page protected would keep the vandals away. I'll leave this message here for a few days, and if there's no objections then I'll recreate it. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 13:26, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

See also List of Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom by nickname where the term is mentioned and referenced. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 13:29, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
I deleted the redirect because it was a redirect to her article under a derogatory name, which had previously been deleted (twice). I had heard the name, but I thought it came about during her time at 10 Downing Street. When I didn't see a discussion of the name in that portion of her article, I deleted it. Since it *does* appear in the article (and is referenced), I no longer am opposed, but it should be redirected to the specific section of her article where the term is discussed: #REDIRECT Margaret Thatcher#Education Secretary (1970–1974). I am posting this reply on both the article talk page and my user talk page to make sure you see my response. Horologium (talk) 14:56, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
No worries, thanks for responding. I think it does tend to be used as a derogatory nickname for her sometimes. She's one of those people who is revered and loathed in equal proportions, depending on one's political views. I may as well create the redirect now while I think about it. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 16:26, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Harvard referencing

{{helpme}} Hello. Please could someone help me sort out the references on the Royal National College for the Blind article? I've been adding Harvard referencing to cite different pages from a document in different parts of the article but it doesn't appear to be coming out right. The refs for Ref 62 should be appearing separately as different entries instead of being grouped together, as they refer to different pages. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 12:12, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

OK, I think I've sorted it out.
  • Firstly, the refs with different page numbers had the same ref name, and that causes them to override one another. You only actually need to name a reference if you are using that specific one - that is, that specific page number - more than once. And the second time you use it, you can use the same short-form.
Example (using plain, non-harvard)
Chzz was born in 1837, <ref name="MyBook">
"The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009.
</ref> in Footown.<ref name="MyBook"/>

See User:chzz/demo/namedref.

Fixed with this edit.
  • Second, the ref= was not matching up with the auto-generated by the harvnb templates - that is, the same-page link that highlights the long-form reference when you click the short-form. Fixed here.  Chzz  ►  14:46, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

DYK topicons

I've just been adding some DYK links to the top of my user page and notice they are appearing without the icon, although the links seem to be working. Can someone tell me how I make them appear? Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 19:10, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

I don't know why what you have isn't working, but you can use {{DYK user topicon}} instead. Please let me know if there are any more questions. Thanks! --Mysdaao talk 19:36, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for responding and directing me to that template. I've just spent the last hour or so changing them all over, and they seem to work ok now. I'm wondering if it was some sort of problem with my system that meant they weren't appearing. Did you also have difficulty viewing them? TheRetroGuy (talk) 21:46, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
One other thing which has just occurred to me, is there a topicon for current event/in the news articles? I've been looking but can't seem to find one. TheRetroGuy (talk) 22:09, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
I also couldn't view the top icons the way you had them before, and I can't figure out why they won't display properly.
There doesn't seem to be a top icon for In the News/Current Events. It shouldn't be too hard to create a template for it, or you could use the generic {{top icon}} and the image File:Gnome globe current event.svg. --Mysdaao talk 02:27, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Not sure what was wrong in that case as everything else seemed to be all right. Thanks for the advice on how to create topicons. I might have a go later on to see what I can do. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 11:33, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
You're welcome! Please let me know if I can help out in any way in the future! --Mysdaao talk 12:18, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi Retro, I know you meant good intentions with this image, but we can't use it because of its non-free rationale - meaning that it can only be used in one article. Good looking out though! Best, --Discographer (talk) 23:37, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

No worries. Hopefully we can find another one to add instead. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 00:50, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
I removed the Beach Boys one as well. Would be nice if we could get images for some of these books as I do think the blank template doesn't look particularly good. TheRetroGuy (talk) 00:55, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Excellent suggestion, says a bit more about her, so thanks for that. Comments

When PaulLargo asked me if I would help him to get this page up to Featured Article status back in June, I saw it as an interesting challenge because I hadn't nominated anything for FAC before, and as a great opportunity to discover more about this fascinating college. Working on the article has helped to broaden my knowedge on subjects relating to visual impairment, from the sort of hardware and software that is available to help those with sight loss to the range of sports that are played by blind people. I'm very pleased that the article made it to FA status, even more so that I've helped to mark an important milestone in Wikipedia's history. I feel much of the credit for this article's success, however, should go to PaulLargo as he did a lot of the background research over several months, sometimes tracking down hard to find information. Really in many instances all I've had to do is collate information and re-word some of the prose. I know Paul is away from Wikipedia at the moment and would like to express my hope that he will be able to return here soon. Also, may this article help to raise the profile of a college which I feel does some sterling work. TheRetroGuy (talk) 16:30, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
