Idiot and Stupid

[edit]

The terms "idiot" and "stupid" are two offensive adjectives used to describe someone mentally challenged or unintelligent. Both terms are commonly used by people daily in the United States, usually to offend someone with mental issues.

According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, both words have common definitions that are very similar to each other. The definition of the term "idiot" is:

1. an adjective that is used to describe someone with metal issues or is unintelligent

The word "stupid" has a very similar definition to the term "idiot", with a slight difference in point and position. The definition of "stupid" can appear in two ways:

1. to act unintelligently or with careless manner

2. a lack of point or interest

Either way, both terms are used mainly in an offensive position.

In present day, the terms mainly are used in public schools to insult someone. Bullies and popular children or teenagers usually use the adjectives to put somebody down or to insult them. If "idiot" and "stupid" are both used in an inappropriate way, the subject may become bullying.

Guardians, parents, and adults also use "idiot" and "stupid".

Parents and/or guardians may use the words in the home. Some parents may also use the terms toward a child, teenager, or toddler. Another commonly used way of "idiot" and "stupid" is to describe a lousy driver or person.

The terms are not considered, by most people, profanity, but are considered inappropriate language.
