Question from MrFancyMustache (14:10, 4 October 2023)[edit]

How does one properly cite? What websites do you use to find reliable sources? --MrFancyMustache (talk) 14:10, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @MrFancyMustache; welcome to Wikipedia! You can see our guideline on citing sources here. There isn't any single website where reliable sources are listed. Following our guideline, sources should be "reliable, independent, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy". For example, reputable news organisations, peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, and books by credible authors are all generally appropriate sources to cite. Please let me know if you have any further questions! Tol (talk | contribs) @ 03:33, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

NPP backlog drive issue[edit]

Hey Tol, thanks again for your help with the bot for the NPP backlog drive. I wanted to make you aware of an issue that we came across with the leaderboard yesterday. I reported some accounts at SPI (relevant thread here which resulted in 13 accounts being blocked. Their activity was primarily related to creating redirects and many of those redirects have been G5 deleted, resulting in some peculiar changes to the the backlog drive's leaderboard.

I believe this was the last version before the mass deletion of the puppets' redirect creations. This is the version before I started doing some patrols today (with no patrols between these two entries). My stats change in the following ways:

  • Total points: 1153.75 -> 1699
  • Patrols: 486 -> 1213
  • Redirect patrol: 631.75 -> 450

What's interesting is that the database report for top new article reviewers does not update in the same way as the bot. We were aware of the issue that redirects at RfD were treated as article reviews, and we planned on manually addressing this at the end of the drive (the database report also has this issue), but we're concerned now that the numbers will be quite a ways off. I've noticed that Xtools can differentiate between a page that was a redirect and one that was an article, and I'd point to this link which is meant to only list the sock's redirect creations as an example of that. Additionally, I've noticed, from a few redirects I had created that were nominated, they would be listed under the "article creations" while an RfD tag is on the page, but once deleted, they would be moved to the "deleted contributions" under the redirect portion of the xtools filter.

I know this is a bit of an information dump, but I've been thinking about this for the past day since discovering it. Just trying to provide any info that might be useful in helping to figure it out. Pinging a few relevant users in case they may have more to add to the discussion: @Illusion Flame, @DreamRimmer, @MPGuy2824, @Novem Linguae. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:11, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Hey man im josh: Thanks for letting me know. Neither I nor my bot have access to deleted pages, so it's hard to detect whether they were redirects or not. Thus, it treats all pages that have been deleted after the review log as articles rather than redirects (your stats change is consistent with 727 redirects being deleted and hence classified as redirects). I'm not sure how to best remedy this (and I don't know how XTools does it). The first idea I have is to search the deletion logs, and classify it as a redirect if the most recent deletion log entry has certain text (e.g. CSD redirect criteria or an RfD discussion link). Do you have any other ideas? Tol (talk | contribs) @ 17:03, 20 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For the next backlog drive, phab:T349048 should help and we can just check the page curation logs. Not sure what the fix is for right now though. MusikAnimal is the maintainer of xtools if you want to ping him and ask him how xtools does it. Or feel free to peek at the xtools code: https://github.com/x-tools/xtoolsNovem Linguae (talk) 16:51, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for letting me know about that task; hopefully that feature can be implemented before the next drive. I'll poke around in XTools and see if I can figure out how they do it; otherwise, I'll ask MusikAnimal. Thanks again for the information. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 14:25, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hey man im josh, @Novem Linguae: XTools handles this with the "New redirect" (mw-new-redirect) tag. I'll work on getting this functionality added to the bot. Apologies for the delay; I've been a bit busy — I should have this handled tomorrow. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 04:12, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am testing a fix for this currently, but am encountering some issues. Still trying to get it to work. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 13:15, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This fix is proving to be problematic, mainly because it leads to significant issues with moves or article creations from redirects. I don't think there is any good way to determine if an article was a redirect at the time it was reviewed. I'm working on implementing a basic system using only the most recent creation log, if available; this will likely still have issues, but hopefully it will be better. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 20:57, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hey @Tol. Sorry for not communicating, but I've been away for a week. Thank you for looking into this for us, we really do appreciate the work you're putting in. Hey man im josh (talk) 21:56, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, Josh (I hope you don't mind if I call you that?). I've implemented a fix (see diff) and am pushing this to Toolforge now. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 03:45, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Tol: Thank you so much! That seems to have worked wonders and makes many of the the numbers in the table make so much more sense. I can't tell you how much we appreciate your work. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:10, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome, and thank you so much! Hopefully this will be mostly accurate (it's still erring on the side of assuming deleted pages are articles when it can't find a deletion log). Tol (talk | contribs) @ 13:16, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from LionsInBoots (16:30, 30 October 2023)[edit]

Hey, I‘m new to Wikipedia and I‘d just like to see how you make an article? I‘m not sure how to go about creating one for a specific surname. --LionsInBoots (talk) 16:30, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind I figured it out. Appreciate that you still read this though. --LionsInBoots (talk) 17:09, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, @LionsInBoots. Feel free to let me know if you have any further questions. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 20:58, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

November Articles for creation backlog drive[edit]

Hello Tol:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2500 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:25, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
