Wanted – competent editor

I was on my mobile app when adding the SD. Didn't see I was on the redirect page. But once I saw the misplaced SD i couldn't get back RD page to make the correction. Thanks for fixing it! – S. Rich (talk) 01:26, 15 August 2023 (UTC) – S. Rich (talk) 01:26, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

@Srich32977: No problem - as a frequent mobile editor I understand the struggle! Tollens (talk) 02:33, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

Question from FlygirlIMJ (01:14, 26 August 2023)

Thank you for your work mentoring people who are new to editing Wikipedia articles. I made an edit to the Susie King Taylor article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susie_King_Taylor), Legacy section. At your leisure, please provide feedback on how the edit that I made may be improved/corrected. Thank you again. --FlygirlIMJ (talk) 01:14, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi FlygirlIMJ! Welcome to the Wikipedia community, and thank you for your contribution! Your edit looks great, there's no need for any sort of correction! Using proper citations can often be tricky for newcomers, so good work! The one thing I would note (and this isn't a huge deal, and not really part of the edit) is that you don't appear to have provided an edit summary. Edit summaries aren't typically seen by readers of the article, but are visible in the page history and in the log of your contributions. By providing an edit summary, you can help other editors by explaining what was changed, so that, for example, they don't have to view the entire edit if they're trying to find out where a particular change was made, or if they are reviewing edits to check for mistakes. Edit summaries don't have to be very long most of the time - your first edit summary could have been something along the lines of "added information about town square renamed after Taylor", and your second could have been "fixed typos", for example. You can also see even just in that article's history how differences in the quality of the edit summary can make it much easier to determine what changes were made; there are certainly a couple there that, although an edit summary was provided, it isn't helpful to others (and I'm certain you will be able to tell which). It isn't really a huge deal overall (you can also see in that article that many others don't provide edit summaries), but it's certainly something that helps others. Thank you again for your contribution! Tollens (talk) 04:55, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

Question from Amoriti (14:10, 26 August 2023)

I want to edit my bio --Amoriti (talk) 14:10, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi Amoriti! Creating or editing Wikipedia articles about yourself is strongly discouraged, and considered acceptable only to remove vandalism or violations of the policy on biographies of living people. It is typically extremely difficult to write an autobiography that is neutral and is well-sourced, and even if an article about you is created and published, other users may contribute material you might not want in the biography. I know this might be disappointing, but if you meet Wikipedia's inclusion criteria, other editors will likely create an article about you eventually. If you have any further questions or want further clarification, please feel free to ask! Tollens (talk) 15:24, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Question from Klio-bigoda on Mariano Rumor (03:04, 24 September 2023)

Hi, I am editing an article on Mariano Rumor. The article states: 'His father...owned a typography and was promoter...'. A word is obviously missing i.e. A typography studio? A typography company? --Klio-bigoda (talk) 03:04, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

@Klio-bigoda: A machine translation of the source provided suggests "tipografia" is better translated as "printing studio" rather than directly as "typography", which makes sense to me given that he was the promoter of a magazine. Tollens (talk) 08:14, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from Oty Calvoh Sankara (19:24, 29 September 2023)

Hello,I was asking if it's possible to right an article about Myself, and if so what are the topics I should focus on? --Oty Calvoh Sankara (talk) 19:24, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

@Oty Calvoh Sankara: Hello! While you can write an article about yourself, doing so is strongly discouraged, and there's no guarantee that the article will not be deleted. Wikipedia has fairly strict standards of notability (that aren't very similar to the typical use of the word), requiring that multiple reliable sources have already published articles that talk about you; if you do not meet those criteria the article may not be published. Additionally, there are several reasons you might not actually want an article about you published, especially that anyone will be able to edit it and include things you may not want published about you. If you really think you meet the criteria for an article to be written, what you write must be from a neutral point of view, without promoting you or your work. For examples of biographies, you could have a look at Category:Living people, a list of all the biographies on Wikipedia that are about living people. To create a draft (though, again, this is discouraged), you can use the article wizard. If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Tollens (talk) 20:16, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from BRaaj (16:05, 7 October 2023)

Question from QuinnZ23 (22:22, 10 October 2023)

Hello, I made an account specifically for this purpose though I may expand on this, I think the words used in "Accusations of Genocide in Donbas" are totally unfair. Obviously, Russian State Media is not a veritably trustworthy source. Still, there is fair evidence of persecution and murder of ethnic Russians in the Donbas and to say those claims are entirely " false " is pretty unfair. --QuinnZ23 (talk) 22:22, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

I would be interested in seeing what you consider "fair evidence of persecution and murder of ethnic Russians". CMacMillan (talk) 22:26, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
It's a 9 year ongoing war @CMacMillan involving many different complex political groups, I don't get how you don't see that as a very clear likelihood with the huge diversity of political organizations, and points to be made in Donbas. QuinnZ23 (talk) 22:39, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
Hello QuinnZ23! This is better suited for the talk page of the article, where other editors will be able to see and participate in the discussion. Please keep in mind that Wikipedia reports what reliable sources have already said – this means that if the sources characterize the claims as false, that's what goes on the page, regardless of whether or not you or I agree with it. If reliable sources do state that Russia's claims are not false, please bring them up on the talk page of the article, and you can have a discussion with other editors about how best to include such content. Question from Malakoff Corporate Communications (04:30, 17 October 2023)

Hi, I am Shila from Malakoff Corp Comm department. On behalf of Malakoff, I would like to update Malakoff new logo into the Wiki page. I have tried, but it was failed due. May you assist on this please?

We need to upload the new logo as we just rebranded in May 2023, and previously, it displayed old Malakoff logo. --Malakoff Corporate Communications (talk) 04:30, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

@Malakoff Corporate Communications: Hello Shila! As you are involved with the company, you will need to follow the policies on paid editing. Before making any further edits, you must disclose your employer on your user page using the {{paid}} template: create that page with the text {{paid|employer=EMPLOYER}}, replacing EMPLOYER with the name of your employer. Making this disclosure is required under Wikipedia's Terms of Use. Additionally, usernames on Wikipedia must additionally represent a specific and unique person, which yours currently does not (though "Shila with Malakoff Corporate Communications" would, for example). You can request a username change at WP:RENAME. Once you have completed the above, please request an edit to the page rather than editing it directly – you can use the edit request wizard to help you do so. Tollens (talk) 04:47, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

I want your edit reverted. It is POV and not appropriate for Wikipedia. 1400 people were murdered and you "tone that down", while removing an important statement about the Iranian media for no reason. More info on the talk page of said article. 87.70.74.69 (talk) 08:56, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

Re: Carole Handler

Julius Schoenbach-Lee's revision on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carole_E._Handler was not made erroneously. The Carole Handler described in the article passed away last night. I'm not too familiar with wiki etiquette but thought it appropriate to alert you before I revert it back. Thank you for keeping an eye on vandalism. AlternateSnail (talk) 04:32, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi AlternateSnail! The reason for my reversion was that when searching the internet for a matching obituary, I was only able to find this, which, while the name and date of death are the same, does not match the person described in the article (different middle initial, different profession, etc). Biographies of living and recently deceased persons have quite a strict standard for the inclusion of any potentially contentious information, where such content must be attributed to a reliable source before it can be added. Are you able to provide a source such as an obituary, news article, etc. that supports the fact that she has died? If so please do add it to the article, or if you'd prefer you can mention it here and I'd be happy to add it for you. Tollens (talk) 04:47, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

darkTheme Pop-Up Backgrounds Appear Transparent

Regarding your custom CSS dark theme, there seems to be an "issue" where the backgrounds of link pop-up cards (I hope this accurately describes the pop-up that, in Wiki mainspace, appears when you hover over a link to other mainspace content on the site) appear fully transparent, such that the text contained within the pop-up card is difficult to read against the text of the page that the user is currently on. This behaviour appears to be consistent across the Vector 2010, Monobook, and MinervaNeue site skins, and still occurred when removing and "reapplying"/reimporting the skin. I'm uncertain whether this behaviour could be caused by browser interaction issues on the user end, but, of course, the page for the darkTheme indicated to mention any issues on your talk page here.

Thank you in advance for any clarification or correction (and, of course, thank you for the darkTheme itself!) Ngc1381. "Other people matter, and I want solid things, not hollow things." (talk) 11:43, 27 October 2023 (UTC)

@Ngc1381: Thanks for the catch! I have those disabled so I didn't notice – they should be fixed now. It might take a few hours for your browser to decide to load the new version, but if it still doesn't work in 24 hours please let me know! Tollens (talk) 18:50, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
@Tollens: Thanks for the reply! The issue still appears to be present, after a browser cache refresh and a few tries of removing and reimporting the theme (I tried also just applying every line from your darkTheme.css file, in case there was any... funkiness with importing on my end, but that expectedly didn't change anything). Based on my limited knowledge of CSS I'd certainly expect the changes you made to affect the navpopup's background opacity but beyond the above, I'm not sure how else to troubleshoot it. Again, thanks. Ngc1381. "Other people matter, and I want solid things, not hollow things." (talk) 20:05, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Hmm, that's strange – it's still working on my computer. Does the same issue still happen if you use a different web browser or a different computer? If it does, can you let me know which skin you're using? Also, to make sure we're talking about the same thing, you are referring to the popups that would be disabled if you uncheck the box next to "Navigation popups: article previews and editing functions pop up when hovering over links" in your preferences, correct? Tollens (talk) 20:15, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Hah, that fixed it, thank you for the clarification. That section is new to me and I assumed that these popups were just default site behaviour, but now that I've checked that box using your darkTheme, the popups look as expected, with an opaque background and the text is readable! Thank you. It's the little things :). Ngc1381. "Other people matter, and I want solid things, not hollow things." (talk) 20:58, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
@Ngc1381: Oh! I fixed the wrong thing! There was an old version of the hover cards (which I fixed), but then a new version was made that became the default – I totally forgot about that version! I've fixed that one too, now – if you go back to the default version it should work. Tollens (talk) 22:43, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
I see, the background is now readably opaque on the default Page Previews popup. In reading about the gadgets feature you mentioned earlier, Navigation Popups, I learned those are different than what I initially thought they were, which is the new Page Previews popup feature, which, yeah, seems to be the default and what I was first talking about (but didn't know it :) ). Thanks! This was neat to work through and learn about. Ngc1381. "Other people matter, and I want solid things, not hollow things." (talk) 23:08, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from Burgerqueenss! (13:24, 28 October 2023)

Hello, how to make a page?I watched tutorials but it is still very confusing. --Burgerqueenss! (talk) 13:24, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi Burgerqueenss! Before you even start writing at all, it's a very good idea to find the references you will use ahead of time. These references should be reliable, independent of the subject (so not their website, for example), and discuss the subject in detail. The reasons for doing this first are that everything on Wikipedia should be verifiable by a reader (meaning they can check for themselves whether it comes from a reliable source), and that there are some fairly stringent requirements about what kinds of topics can have an article (this is called notability on Wikipedia, though it is not similar to the day-to-day use of the word). Draft articles need at least reliable sources like I described above before they are likely to be accepted – if these sources don't exist the article unfortunately can't be published. One of the most common mistakes that people make is to write the article first and look for references later – often they realize the sources don't exist, and so they've wasted their time writing an article that is unlikely to be accepted. Once again, I cannot stress enough how important it is to find your references before you even start writing at all. Once you have found your sources you can create a draft article using the article wizard – it will set up a couple of things that should be on the page. You can write your article on that page, based on the references that you already found. You can click the "Publish page" button before you're ready to actually submit the article for review, it essentially just saves your work. When you are ready to have the page reviewed, you can click "Submit the draft for review!" in the box that will be at the top of the draft. As a side note, and though this does not necessarily apply to you at all, it's strongly recommended that you not write articles about yourself or topics you are connected to (your company, your friends, etc.) – if this doesn't apply to your case go right ahead! If you have any further questions or need clarification, please do feel free to ask – I'm happy to assist. Tollens (talk) 20:33, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
