Question from HoosierNatRat (18:24, 29 October 2023)

Are you a bot or a human? Either is fine just curious. --HoosierNatRat (talk) 18:24, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi HoosierNatRat – I'm a real person who edits Wikipedia! While there are a couple bots on Wikipedia, their usernames always identify them as bots (usually they end with 'Bot'), and they will never talk with other users. Tollens (talk) 19:48, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

  • An arbitration case named Industrial agriculture has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case close 8 November.

Question from Kayden Hurts 24 (18:37, 8 November 2023)

how do i write an article --Kayden Hurts 24 (talk) 18:37, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello Kayden Hurts 24! There's an information page available at Help:Your first article that should be of assistance; if you've read that and need clarification please do let me know. I cannot stress enough how important it is to find reliable sources which you will base your article on before you start writing – one of the most common mistakes new editors make is to write the article first and look for references to support what they've written afterwards rather than writing the article based only on sources they found first. The information page I linked above has a button which will assist you in creating a draft page where you can work on your article, when you're ready. Tollens (talk) 21:36, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from LucioSantosParedes (18:16, 9 November 2023)

Hello, I was wondering, how come I can’t edit the FNAF movie page? There is some stuff missing on the plot summary and I want to add it --LucioSantosParedes (talk) 18:16, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi LucioSantosParedes! You should be able to edit that article now. The article is semi-protected, meaning that editors who have made less than ten edits or had an account for less than four days are prevented from editing the article – the protection log indicates that in this case protection was applied due to repeated additions of unsourced content by new editors. You have made more than ten edits now, so the page protection should no longer prevent you from editing the article. Tollens (talk) 19:27, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

Redirects vs search terms

Re. this, redirects are not search terms – Wikipedia does not list strings of search terms as redirects. See WP:R for an explanation of the purpose of redirects. Cheers, — kashmīrī TALK 16:17, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

@Kashmiri: I am well aware of the purpose of redirects – the page you linked even includes They aid searches on certain terms as a reason not to delete them. See WP:R#K3. I agree that Wikipedia should not include most search terms, but there is no reason to delete those which are synonymous with their target and could be at all useful – redirects are cheap. Tollens (talk) 16:44, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, but it gives much closer examples - search terms that themselves are encyclopaedic terms, and it's just that the relevant article is located elsewhere. Otherwise, we'll end up with countless redirects like Planet closest to Sun (Mercury), Buddha's place of birth (Lumbini), Act of winning a war (Victory), and so on. I hope you agree that this path would lead to a mess. — kashmīrī TALK 16:55, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
@Kashmiri: I agree it would not be helpful to mass-create redirects from similar titles. However, the fact that someone has gone out of their way to create it inherently suggests that they do find it useful. The edit summary of the creation of the redirect in question, for instance, suggests that they found the page difficult to locate and would have been aided by the existence of that redirect. If someone was to single out any one of the redirects you list for creation, I would not object. Again, it isn't as if it's hurting anyone, not least when the title in question is quite an obscure word. Tollens (talk) 17:12, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
Oh no, that particular editor, a large chunk of their editing has been the creation of various redirects, mostly of similar a type and usability (i.e., likely never used) — kashmīrī TALK 21:08, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
I notice that out of the 9 redirects you nominated for speedy deletion by that editor, 7 were declined by others – I'd suggest that your view is likely not the consensus opinion. If you really want them deleted, feel free to go to RFD. Tollens (talk) 23:48, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from ArnoldDeeToo2000 (02:57, 12 November 2023)

Are sources in a different language that had never been translated to English allowed as sources on Wikipedia? --ArnoldDeeToo2000 (talk) 02:57, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi ArnoldDeeToo2000! As an English-language project, English-language sources are generally preferred on Wikipedia, but if the foreign-language source is of better quality it is absolutely fine to use it. If you'd like to specifically quote a section of the source (though this isn't typically done unless the exact wording is important), you should also provide a translation of that quote into English (ideally done without the use of machine translation). Here's a link to the policy section on non-English sources, if you're interested. Tollens (talk) 05:12, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from LorentBerbatovci (01:03, 15 November 2023)

Hey FormalDude or Tollens, Ive written 2 articles, one got deleted already the other is about to. I would like to know where is the Draft so I can edit it again and can you help me with editing my article so it doesnt get rejected again? Thank you --LorentBerbatovci (talk) 01:03, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi LorentBerbatovci! It doesn't look like any of your work has been completely deleted, actually, though two articles have been changed to drafts – these are located at Draft:Fjolla Beka and Draft:Brows By Fjolla. It looks like it might not have been made clear by the editor who moved your articles to draftspace that there are some fairly strict guidelines about criteria that need to be met before an article can be published on Wikipedia – these criteria focus on sources provided in the article and are referred to as notability (though that wording is misleading, and doesn't have the typical meaning "worthy of note"). The criteria, put simply, are that an article must demonstrate that reliable sources which are unrelated to the topic (so not the company's website in an article about a CEO, for instance) have talked about the subject in detail. Usually when evaluating whether a draft is ready to be published reviewers are looking for at least three such sources. This is especially important in articles about living people – this is to protect them and help make sure wrong information does not get published by accident. The first thing you should try to do is find the sources you'll use to write the article – one of the most common mistakes is to write the article first and find sources later. Once you have found at three reliable sources that talk about the subject in detail (not just passing mentions), you can write the article by essentially summarizing what those sources have already said, making sure to avoid promotional language such as describing someone as "talented" or "visionary" (though stating that, for example, some specific person has described them that way would be OK). When you're ready, you can submit the article for review by another editor, who will either publish the article or provide feedback you can use to improve it before submitting it again. If you need any additional help or clarification on anything I've described above please don't hesitate to ask! Tollens (talk) 05:29, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Arthistoryxxx (03:17, 15 November 2023)

Hello Tollens, I am an art history student creating a wikipedia page for a working artist whose work I admire and follow. Can you help me check if my draft is acceptable for submission? Link is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Susan_Chen Thank you very much. --Arthistoryxxx (talk) 03:17, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Arthistoryxxx! It looks like you've already submitted your draft for review through Articles for Creation – the reviewer will provide feedback if it is not accepted. While I am not a draft reviewer myself, your submission looks good to me – if the reviewer raises any concerns that you're unable to fix you're perfectly welcome to ask me for help! The review process shouldn't take too long (almost certainly under a week). Tollens (talk) 06:09, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Shishilan (01:10, 16 November 2023)

what if my edit was considered wrong in an article? --Shishilan (talk) 01:10, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Shishilan! Don't worry too much about making a 'wrong' edit – be bold in updating articles! If others feel your edit was 'wrong' in some way, they are free to edit what you've written, so that the article can be made as good as possible. Sometimes, if someone really disagrees with what you've written, they might completely undo your change (which is OK and doesn't necessarily mean you did something wrong – don't take it personally, it happens to everyone now and then!), but even then it still remains in the page history, so it isn't gone forever. If your edit is undone but you disagree with the reason they provide for undoing your edit, it's considered best not to simply put it back, but rather discuss it with them on the talk page of that article to try to come to an agreement. If you plan on making a change you think might be especially controversial, it is often a good idea to jump straight to discussion on the talk page without even making the edit at first; you can write what you plan to change, and others can comment on your idea and provide feedback. To reiterate, though, really don't worry – everyone makes mistakes now and then, and everyone has been new at this! Tollens (talk) 05:44, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Wp.innerpeace (06:00, 20 November 2023)

In the "suggested edit" menu I got three options "easy", "medium" and "hard"; which one should I choose as I'm a new editor here. --Wp.innerpeace (talk) 06:00, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Wp.innerpeace! What you should choose really just depends on what you're interested in doing (and you don't have to use that feature at all if you don't want to!). There are loads of ways to contribute to Wikipedia – some of them are listed at the Task Center along with more detailed descriptions, if you're looking for specific examples. If you need assistance with any particular edits along the way, I'm happy to help! Tollens (talk) 07:53, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Additionally, are you able to provide a source to demonstrate that this is the case?
